Methinks I sight a new musical sport: Morris Fencing! You dress up in funny costumes with little porkpie hats and streamers and slash at each other with smallswords, bastard swords, falchions, scimitars, halberds, double-bit axes, dirks, claymores, bayonets, tomahawks, and other edged things, all to the music of an accordion and bodhran playing traditional Morris Fencing music (like "Fightin' In The Streets" and "A Boy Named Sue").

No no...Morris fencing is as old as Adam's shit. It was with a Morris Fence that God kept Adam out of Eden after he serve eviction papers on him and his ilk. The Bible says he had an angel with a flaming sword stand at the entrance, but that was all a part of the Morris Fence Company's ad campaign, being as how the logo stamp on every one of Morris' fence caps was that of an angel with a flaming sword.

Kk

Morris is fencing, Less is fencing, tearing off the pig in the pie hat and wearing a kilt made of grass.
They all tend to get together to make fun and merry, get drunk and fall on their ass..tro..turf.
Da turf is up...put on your happy slippers and fall in the waters..
of the giant pool that lies somewhere behind the dancers, that like to show off their legs as they fence with the midnight marauders.

Hello all! Good to be back. My computer was struck down by a destructive force of electric current that caused explosive, crushing, electric-magnetic effects. It will never be the same again, I, on the other hand, have changed little.

Good to see your bright shining faces, KK and RR! And the Tavern is open also, if you don't get enough nonsense over here. :)

I'd leave the swords for the rapper and Highland dancers to attack each other with.

Morris dancers are quite enough with sticks and other blunt instuments( north west morris), beer, or very blunt instruments (ballistic accordians). besides, they spend a fair amount of time attacking the ground, which would not be at all good for your fancy swords.

Or for the ultimatly dangerous weapon you have to go to the BroadWomen sword dance. Instead of 4 swords laid to form a cross to dance round, broardswords, we use 4 of our ladies are laid to make a cross.... um four of our ladies are crossed

I give up. The ladies are not crossed. We wouldn't dare do that. They're certainly not laid on stage. We don't do that kind of dancing. This is broadswords, and now replace the women with men, and the swords with women. You get the idea...

Hah! A sword? It is to laugh, yuck yuck yuck! I have a smallsword, a cavalry saber, three epees (two french and one italian), and a fencing saber. I also have a poinard, a main gauche, a rifleman's knife, and a whole bunch of other pointy, sharp, things. I do not, at this point, have a bayonet.

And I too wondered about the name of that pub.

BUT!! a far more pressing issue has arisen:

Should I go to a conference in Nashville in early March?

It will be March 4 - 8 at the Gaylord Grand Opry thigamajig. Is there good musis (e.g., folk, jazz, blues, etc.) in Nashville? I'm not really into Country & Western (although bluegrass and real western are fine).

Now you're being silly. What would you do with a supercollider?

I wanted to make an high energy Lamp . Nothing over the top, just an electron gun capable of getting them up to a high enough speed to produce cerkanhof radiation. I did the numbers, and it would require a rather large vacuum chamber, and have to run at several hundered thousand volts, which I though excessive for a lamp....

Actually, what I really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, want is something I learned about over Thanksgiving from a friend who works at Argonne National Labs.

What I want is an FEL.

A Free Electron Laser [FEL] generates tunable, coherent, high power radiation, currently spanning wavelengths from millimeter to visible and potentially ultraviolet to x-ray. It can have the optical properties characteristic of conventional lasers such as high spatial coherence and a near diffraction limited radiation beam. It differs from conventional lasers in using a relativistic electron beam as its lasing medium, as opposed to bound atomic or molecular states, hence the term free-electron.

It's the fact that it works in the mid- to high- infrared that makes it attractive to me. You see, it'll literally evaporate things (including certain people) out to about 12 kilometers!

ZAP! POOF!
ZAP! POOF!

YEE-HA! This would be the most fun since Sam Colt invented the revolver!!!

I actually have a serious purpose on mudcat for once. I'm trying to learn sets of words to various tunes. Mainly ealy 19 c broadsides, I think.

It is very, very distarcting trying to dance 'Blue bonnets' when you can only remember half the words.

"Pas-de-bas right, two high cuts with extentions, mirror left and break ...beacon is blazing, Come with the buckler, the lance, and the bow."

as a thought process doesn't help dancing!

I posted but it didn't stick. It bears repeating--if you take that laser thingie to the tavern, Rap, you'll have to play with it out on the porch. You could cook a duck or a cat, or you'd put someone's eye out with that thing indoors.

If it's tunable to the near IR, you could go hunting and barbequeing at the same time. Just think of the new dishes:

'Elk smoked in whatever wild mushrooms were within 10' of it'

Oh yeah. The possiblities are endless. I could even have folks over for a barbecue and cook their food for them while they're on the way.

But for hunting and things, consider that you can reload shotgun shells. So you could actually shoot a moose, fire a special incendiary round (or use the so-called "Dragon's Breath" shell) to cook it, another special round containing barbecue sauce for flavoring, and use a grappling hook to bring it to you. That way you don't have to get up and actually DO anything at all.

But I want an FEL for Very Special Purposes. And I have a little list.

Given the size of the damn thing you'd need a HUMV to tow it into the woods and would make too much noise for any self-respecting moose to bear.

Bear in mind, too, that your Xmas present will be constrained by the phase-matching condition for strong interactions between the electrons and laser field - i.e. for a given periodic magnet structure, the wavelength is determined only by the energy of the electron beam.

You could, I suppose, set one up in your back yard to snipe at UFO's. They reach 10KW, which is probably enough to scorch any Venusian rocket jockey right out of his console chair.

As Rapaire wisely predicted, my head was swimming with after-tones from hearing Barky play principal trumpet in "American in Paris" and "Appalachian Spring" in on evening, and then getting up at four and driving all the way back to San Diego from San Jose in one fairly fell swoop.

However, I was stirred to interject BS when I saw entirely too many posts here being dedicated to weapons of obsessive destruction.

Do you think choosing tile, granite counter, wood cabinets, fixtures, toilet and sink for a small bathroom qualifies as cruel and unusual punishment?

I do...

Rapaire is just trying to distract MOM and Amos from noticing that he was running with sharp stuff. Cute link, though. Looks like something Moonglow would turn up with. (She's better now, BTW, after four days of high fever and headaches--now her mother can rest up from a rather trying week, which started with a phone call at 4:30am on Tuesday--Moonglow felt so cold and achy that she didn't want to walk next door to my room to tell me, so she called me from her cell phone. . . resourceful, and funny in hindsight, but alarming to get that call and hear your child say "Mom, I don't feel good." My mind flashes around to where she might have gotten to. "Where are you?" I ask. "In my room," she replies. Sheesh.)

In too few years it will be "I'm in an all night coffee bar with friends". Then "I'm in a bar with friends...". Then "...I'm at a friend's I met in a bar...". I hate it when kids go the way of all humanity after you expect them for so long to be different!! :)

The cell phone is an excellent investment in parental survival, as long as he subscribes to the "if it rings, answer it" school of behavior. Sooner or later she will learn that answering her cell phone is optional.

Turns out the lower temperature when she went out the door with Dad last night was just a fluke. She's back up with the high fever again overnight. 104 is not fun. Doctor is keeping track of this, says it's something that is going around. Maybe Gluon could go sleep on her feet over there, since all of her cats and dogs are over here with me. It seems that purring on your chest when you're sick is written into the cat job description, and it does provide some comfort.

Gluon has agreed; he will be quantizing the Moonglow futures-sheaf probability matrix and doing his best to resolve the Eigenstates according to the preferences you have expressed. To do this, he rapid-assesses the relationship of quanta-bonds in the sheaf of possibilities and withdraws Gluonness from those that lead the "wrong" way. This has proven very useful--for example, when the Air Force thought I should go to Vietnam, but I never did. Most peculiar, that dog, but a good friend.

A long time ago I had a fever of 104. I hallucinated and ended up in the hospital -- the only way to break the fever was an IV drip. I remember waking up feeling pretty good; they took the needle out and after the nurses, etc. left I decided to get out of bed and get my clothes. They were on a chair about three feet away. I didn't make it, I barely had strength to crawl back up into bed from floor I collapsed on.

Good luck to the kid from someone who's been there.

I spent several months in or near a similar condition -- I had ignored a bad case of pneumonia until it was almost too late and it took two quart bags of fluids and one of antibiotics to snap me out of it. Even so I was as weak as a kitten in a surfzone for months.

But I did get to take some interesting peeks over the Mortailty horizon. I concluded that the body's memetic field is VERY distorted and that this must be one of the reasons losing a body is so disorienting -- it's like a media-addict, thinking the world is as shown on TV, and then unexpectedly having his set die and having to deal with reality directly, instead.

NPR had an interview today with a man in W. Vga whose house is surrounded by 12 satellite dishes and who is planning on a 13th. He has access to over 5000 channels. Asked how many TVs he had, he replied, "only 3!".

Another report stated that the AVERAGE American citizen spends over 4 hours, channel surfing. PER DAY!!

I do less than that in a year, but I spend time web surfing and reading.

My problem was also pneumonia. I had chloromycetin in the IV drip -- tablets didn't work. Chloromycetin isn't used for that anymore.

When I started High School the gym wasn't ready, so we kinda wandered around outside for gym class. Same thing the second semester. Labor Day weekend of my sophomore year I had pneumonia, so I didn't take gym that year either. Junior year I had a foot operation and missed gym there, too. First semester of my senior year I just skipped it; in the second semester the gym teacher (who also taught civics and history) asked me, "Aren't you supposed to be in gym class?" and after I allowed that yes, I was, he said, "Well, you haven't made it in three and half years, so don't start now."

A week after I graduated I started Basic Training -- the old teacher laughed when I came home on leave.

What would happen if the United States, seized with moral rejuvenation, led an international campaign to provide low-cost energy not just to its own citizens but to every village, city and outpost of human life on the planet?

I believe it could be done for about as much, or less, than the wars in Afghanistan, Iraq, and maybe Granada, have cost us.

Cheap stoves, cheap energy, and an effective management of water would change the face of civilization for the better, rather than continuing to scar it with disfiguring Stupidity- Transmitted-Diseases. Beating swords into ploughshares for the 21st century has a certain charm to it, don't you think?

A surprising amount of energy can be captured from the sun. Problem is that for years all of the patents have been bought up and sat upon by the oil companies.

Well, I think a lot could be developed just using ordinary lensing technology and Stirling engines. I also think when we get to the point of nanofabrication we'll be surprised what a roof tiled with nano-scale wind-, sound-, light- and transient vibration converters will do. A good chunk of dough and determination is needed to cut through the evil grip of vice on new thinking. There's a huge amount of energy involved in just lifting water up and dropping it down which could be used intelligently. There's also a gigantic tidal pump somewhere near here that raises and drops unimaginable masses of water twice a day. So my sense of the situation is that it requires more than anything else a clear focus. Hell, there's no reason you couldn't have a little nuclear plant the size of a VW behind your barn if they engineered it well enough. I am more than a little fed up with the dissipation of attention in the area and the failure to find a way to focus efforts in a viable path.
