Just tell everyone you weren't working in base 10 because you had been thinking, deeply, of mathematics in other bases. Base .93826049, for example. People will be impressed by your mathematical acumen. They'll think you're nuts, but they'll be impressed.

Hey, Amos, that is a gently clever movie, but it wasn't a surprise. I've been reading and watching too many mysteries over the years, I guess. If I can keep up with Morse and Jane Tennyson I can easily see through the producer of this one. But I enjoyed the ride, so to speak, wondering when and how they would reveal all to the general audience. Lucky for those who didn't get it (my son being one, since he fell asleep half-way through) that the detective thinks it through the way he does. My man Hercule Poirot wouldn't quibble at the order in which the clues make an appearance, and they were ample to satisfy the avid mystery reader.

This seems to fit a mode of film that are coming out lately that are quite trim in their dialog, a cinematography visual feast, and that satisfy a particular audience--one that pays attention to the dialog, because things are generally only said once--and who pay attention to detail. These are counter to the big in your face Hollywood blockbusters, and I far prefer them (too bad they seem to go to DVD so quickly, then vanish). Merchant and Ivory on a diet, but with more skin. Have you seen the steamy, subtle, wonderful little flick Firelight? For some reason, it reached the screens of obtuse reviewers who had never read any 19th century British literature and who had no concept of what was really going on in the movie. It's a thinking woman's chick flick. Alas, the only version around in the US these days is one out of Hong Kong that was formatted for TV so it loses nearly half of the gorgeous cinematic effect. I finally got a European copy in wide screen and have computer software that lets me view it. I'm thinking I should write a viewers guide, for those who don't understand the few choices of genteel women in that society, the role of primogeniture, and for those who haven't read Bronte, Dickens, Hardy, and others, to explain how these kinds of stories work. One critic in Utah complained that this romance had sex in it. (!) I guess he hadn't read Jude the Obscure or Tess of the Durbervilles. The French Lieutenant's Woman meets Jane Eyre, mediated by Georgette Heyer.

Okay, back to the numbers racket you guys were running. MOM is just biding her time, she doesn't understand a word of it but knows you'll get it out of your systems soon enough.

Was it a numbers racket? Or just making a racket about numbers?

Glad you enjoyed the flick. I wil try and find Firelight.

You got it--a racket about numbers.

MOM just rolls her eyes and keeps on folding the laundry as you guys run around the kitchen with all of your math ideas.

Rapaire:

The conquest of the Western world -- admittedly not a high-precision operation -- and the mastery of the briny oceans was accomplished with magnetic compasses whose accuracy was on the order of anywhere between 50% and 90%. Granted, a lot of ships got lost through the centuries, while we figured out means of correction for deviancy in the process. But I am sure Lord Nelson would have given his right eye for a precision of 1%.

You may think I meant "deviation", the variability of magnetic fields due to local disturbance. But deviancy -- the variability of human thought and behaviour due to local disturbance -- has been just as big a problem historically.

not necessarily for the deviants, either, though usually.

You mention Horatio Nelson and deviancy in the same breath?

Well, so did his contemporaries.

Which, in the best Rapaire fashion, neatly dodges the point I was making about Horatio's desire for precision at 1%.

Hey, you gotta be quick witted and nimble brained to keep up with MY tangents, sines, cosines, cotans, etc. As for Nelson's deviance, it was due to the degrees of difference between true North and Magnetic North. If Horatio (as we called him) had known that Magnetic North wasn't True North he wouldn't have discovered Van Dieman's Land, much less Trafalgar and Boothia. AND his crew wouldn't have had to ship him home pickled in brandy, either.

Horatio Nelson (known to Lady Hamilton as "Iddy Wicky Woogums") discovered VDL in 1473, claiming it "for England, the King, and my Bitsy-Witsy-Woo [i.e., Lady Hamilton]."

Because he never understood the difference between Magnetic and True North, had flunked astronomical navigation at Sandhurst (he answered the question "What is the name of that big light that comes out at night?" as "George III"), and used a sextant backwards, he would sometimes move not only around in Space but back and forth in Time. His crew, in documents still kept under wraps by the Official Secrets Act, wrote that they also sailed on the canals of Barsoom, saw flying things drop exploding eggs in the Sandwich Islands, were silent upon a peak in Darien, saw slimy things crawl with legs upon a slimy sea, and nearly sank in tumult in a lifeless ocean. They also "crossed the T" of the Flying Dutchman and saw three kids sailing around in a wooden shoe. (Though these documents are very, very secret, librarians know How To Find Things Out.)

and it goes to show you just how clever Horatio was, to discover VDL in 1473 since he wasn't born until 1758.

On the other hand, he discovered STD in 1775; something that didn't please him or his Bitsy-witsy-woo at all.

When librarians go forth upon the Great and Troubled Sea of All Knowledge, to Find Things Out, they run great risks. A single symbol, turned wrong-way to, can undo their bearings and leave them without orientation. One biased and undependable Source can wreak havoc with the entire voyage and leave them adrift in uncharted waters, with no means of communicating with the Lande, and wholly unconnected with Realitye.

Thus, the Goode Rapaire, who on our behalfe has sailed into those Oceanes, and Faced those Dangers, and taken those mighty Riskes, and to them has been Loste.

Let us Praye.

I dunno if the sense of humour grows sharper in Arkansas than in seaboard communities, but this leads me to believe it is one possibility. The other, of course, is people striving to be dumber than a box of chocolate rocks.

That is . . . um . . . er . . . good god, did she really think that? There wasn't any hint there that she had her tongue in her cheek.

On another note, it may be "lopsided," but each side is of equal weight, so it will spin.

totally a different subject ---
it really gets my goat when the "best/most rational/least damaging" response to falsehoods is silence; since that allows the falsehoods to remain unchalleged and thus liable to be taken as "truth".

I think that I'll ask in the Help forum for a thread in the main forum asking for a thread in the help forum to undelete a thread somewhere else entirely. Following which I'll complain that just because the deleted thread was at Tweed's place there is no excuse for my being censored on Mudcat.
