Never been to Orillia, but I have been to Skaneateles a number of times. When I lived in New York City I used to head upstate on my days off a few times a summer to visit an old friend who was a neighbor when we were growing up in the boonies of Washington State. Lovely little town, way expensive. She was married into the Fonda family. The Fonda family, cousins of the big name Fondas. (Since divorced, and then remarried and widowed, but I think she still uses that name, because it's her son's name).

Those Fondas!! Did you know Henry left someone with a bun in the oven, after a hard night drinking green liqueurs? The girl could do nothing to get him to take responsibility fo his paternity. She named the boy Hargrove, and raised him to be a decent lad. But when he was 11, he finally braced her with the question of where he had come from.

She looked at him sadly and replied,

"Absinthe made thee, Hargrove Fonda."

They seem so inexpensive, but its like Gillette and ISPs -- where they really get you is in the bits.

I'm in DC, but I've been in Ontario (Canada, that is). It's okay. Not at all like Fonda, New York, though.

The garage sale is over for now. First it was muggy as hell, at least 129% humidity, then when it finally dried a little it got super hot. Oy. We couldn't stand it by about 11am so called it quits. The neighbor and I are going to try again in early October, and I'll get it in the printed newspaper this time, not just the online version. We all observed today that few of the people who came by probably use the computer. Many don't read English, but they figure out "Garage Sale" and the address.

We did a little better than break even. So it wasn't a complete failure, and the yard looks great since I made a huge push to mow the entire thing the day before the sale.

It's not so much that Coxsackie appeals to me, Amos, as that just reading its road signs on the highway can just about cause a crack up.

And it's not too terribly far from Darling or Intercourse, PA, either.

Distances are much smaller back east than out her on the west coast.

But we do have a "Coalinga" in California.

I begged off doing a yard sale with a friend of mine this year, whether at her house or mine. Last 2 times I've done it, I ended up spending the better part of 3 days and netting less than $40 per day, not counting the bigger ticket items like guitars.   I can do almost that well by just donating the small stuff to charity and taking the tax deduction and using CraigsList for the higher-value items. Yard sales are not the best ways to get a good price on something like a guitar or stereo stuff or computer or any but the cheapest jewelry.

They also have a Coxsackie for older folks, Rapaire, as Genie points out. The Town Council recently voted to adopt a Town Song:

Oh, keep yer hands off it,
Keep your hands off it,
Keep your hands off it,
It don't belong to you.

Cocksackie, Cocksackie
You can go whacky
Here in Cocksackie
It's the place for you!
And you girlfriend, too!

Oh, keep yer foots off it,
Keep your foots off it,
Keep your foots off it,
It don't belong to you.

Cocksackie, Cocksackie
You can go whacky
Here in Cocksackie
It's the place for you!
And you girlfriend, too!

Oh, keep yer mouth off it,
Keep your mouth off it,
Keep your mouth off it,
It don't belong to you.

Cocksackie, Cocksackie
You can go whacky
Here in Cocksackie
It's the place for you!
And you girlfriend, too!

A murmuring of impeachment is rippling through the sleepy little village as I write.

So is Coxsackie, New York, named for a (foot and mouth) viral disease, Amos, or was it the other way around?   Inquiring minds need to know.

I do better on eBay than I did at the garage sale, but the garage sale is the opportunity to meet your neighbors and get rid of the bulky stuff. I'll probably toss a lot and I have a couple of things to fix before the next one.

I fixed my computer today, with or without a garage sale--I have an extra hard drive in an external HD enclosure that died (the enclosure died, not the drive. Actually, the power cord to it is what died, and I couldn't replace the cord.) I'll hunt around eBay for one later, but for now I found a new enclosure for probably as much as the cord would cost. All swapped out and there's now another blue light on my desktop. With all of the LED ready lights around here, who needs ceiling fixtures?

In a little while it will be midnight. September 9. 99. Spoons.

I have a question: My birthday is on Sept. 6. 96. Am I snakebit? Is 96 considered the unsexiest number around, compared to, say, 69?

Wodda hot date!!   Stilly, 96 is the same as 69 rolled over, isn't it? But if it leaves you snake bit, I would say you are either too nearsighted to make dates, or you are taking the Old Testament entirely too seriously.

Military and government forms here always would have the date then the month also, so it isn't just European. 6 September is how it would appear on forms.

Looks like it's gonna rain again. I was going to mow the next door neighbor's lawn, but I'd trapped my mower behind a wall of unsold garage sale stuff. I cleared a path, pulled a muscle in the process, went to retrieve my son at a friend's house, and now that I have time and the motrin has kicked in, it's trying to rain.

Maybe in the morning.

We had a lovely wee jam under our favorite spreading oak tree in the Park, light breezes and temps around 80 -- perfect jamming weather!

Glad to hear your heat wave has died down in SD, Amos.    It got so hot recently that my 90+-year-old parents finally broke down and let my sis get them an air conditioner.   Folks their age don't do so well when the mercury soars.

Which Portland, Genie?

Ragweed is in full force here right now, so no matter what the weather, some of us manage to be miserable anyway. It's Allegra for the time being.

Nice day today, though. Thanks for the suggestion to kick back. I still have some laundry to do, but I kind of enjoy that. (All I have to do is remember the bad old days when I had to haul laundry to a public establishment and feed greedy machines lots of quarters and then sit around for ages and wait for it to finish.)

Hey, Mike, it'll feel good to get home. You will still be struggling with all of the annoying bank card stuff, but at least you'll be at your own house to do it. You'll be able to rattle your sabre at anyone to hear over the phone (whereas you probably couldn't take it with you to do the same thing while you were in D.C.)

Oregon, Stilly.

And it's tolerable here today, but 'sposed to get hotter thru the coming week. I'm having more problems with fleas (cat-borne, but they bite people too) than with the ragweed.

I did find some nice homeopathics to use for hay fever most of the time. Work pretty well.

As for my laundry, I usually take it to Seattle with me, as long as my machine is on the fritz.   (The place I stay has a high-end, water-efficient, energy-efficient machine and I can do some laundry while working on other things.)   But I occasionally have to go back to beating the clothes against the rocks in the Willamette. OK, not quite that bad, but my bathtub does get used for washing clothes from time to time.   I avoid the quarter-sucking machines as much as I can.

I remember reading about a little washer agitator thingy that could be set across the tub and do the work of washing clothes in the tub.

Of course, the idea isn't exactly original, just electrified.

Monday morning again. Got the not-so-little-one off to school and now I'm beginning my work day. MOM knows about telecommuting also, she always works from home. Think I'll mosey into the kitchen for another cuppa tea from the pot under the tea cosy next to the kettle. Gluon passed by earlier and just by sniffing the kettle the water was boiling in an instant. Sure saves on the power bill!

Post - Top - Home - Printer Friendly - Translate

Subject: RE: BS: The Mother of all BS threads

Actually, Dumphuque is a subset of Bumphuque's population. That is to say, many found there are Dumphuques, but it is not necessarily the case that if in Bumphuque means one IS Dumphuque. And it is also true that there are no subsets within a Dumphuque which equal Bumphuque, the latter being a superset of any qualifying Dumphuque .

Hope this helps.
