Since the medium is the massage (as McLuhan REALLY entitled his book), Mom has always been on television. Also radio, heliograph, telegraph, printed media, manuscripts, cuneiform, graffiti, smoke signals, chiseled into stone, painted on walls, in the spoken word....

I suggest we use good, solid, native words, words that are here legally and have a better pedigree than English.

Words like wowawah, daabida, and phve't.

Depends on which use of the word you are looking at. It varies with context, much as any overworked, underpaid word does.

THe ones you REALLY want to watch out for are the words that are in the country illegally, having snuck in from other countries, like "rights", "justice"...things like that. Damn Europeans.

Stilly quoted Kinky as saying " I'm an old school, independent Democrat." and also "I'm for efficient government, government that works for the people"

Aren't these two statements mutually exclusive?

As far as I can tell most of my life "democrat" has equaled "more government; more spending, less decisions in the hands of the people"

Oh, Mom! What AM I going to do with you? Down at the bottom again, and covered with random traces of marmite!

I like Kinky. At least he speaks plainly.

MOM wants to know if you read Kinky's latest essay?

I'm 65 years old, though I read at the 67-year-old level. I'm an old school, independent Democrat. Hell, I can't afford to be a Republican. I'm not for big government or small government; I'm for efficient government, government that works for the people. George Washington, who eschewed the notion of political parties, once said that all we needed was "common sense and common honesty." Unfortunately, these two commodities are almost impossible to find in the town named after our first president.

Indeed, the Democrats and the Republicans have become the bullies of the playground. They amply fulfill my definition of politics: poly means more than one, and ticks are blood-sucking parasites.

No, that's the neighbor's house that has the permanent red light in front.

...or Pocatello, where the one traffic light is right outside Rapaire's place and is gone haywire--it never changes from red.

Well, I was starting to believe that San Diego had become one of those one-traffic light towns like LA or Mendon.

Sorry for being unclear to you, sir--I thought you had graduated English 101.

To re-phrase at your proper reading level:

"The sky is blue. The breezes are gentle. The birds are deliriously very busy. The traffic is light, because there are not many cars on the road at one time. The roads are good. How nice the day is! See the blue sky! See the light traffic. See the busy birds. Don't you wish for days like this where YOU live?".

Hope this helps.

It's CALLED a "traffic light", Amos. It's that red-yellow-green thing at intersections. You should specify which traffic light you mean.

We had a sprinkle this morning, too--but it was liquid and clear, and not very hard; now the sun is out and the sky is blue, the breezes gentle, the birds deliriously busy, the traffic light and the roads good.

Without posing the question, born from elsewhere
It is to demand where they are,
The snows of the future.

Your point? I believe you live north of where I live, and it ain't unusual for us to have snow in may. Our frost free date is the END of May.

On the way up the trail to school, Will and I ate snow off of the sagebrush bushes. Then there was a VW bug whose snow had slipped down and it looked like the folds of a marble curtain hanging over the engine area. So we had a walk full of deliciousness and beauty!

Shame isn't gruesome, nor is he disgusting. He's actually both, as well as being a (fortunately dead-ended) pollution and corruption of the human gene pool.

You know, Shame is also bald. Completely bald, if you follow me, due to an accident he had while playing with a sledge hammer and a tree stump when he was young. What everyone thinks is hair is really dirt, corn and wheat smut, and various bodily excretions. He also sings (if you can call it that) a very high soprano.

Tom plays the trumpet because it's the loudest instrument available through the school. His singing voice is fine, but trumpets can blare out more decibels.

Two of my sons have organized a neighborhood band with the girls next door. They have band practice every afternoon. These are the instruments: a trumpet (Tom), a cello (Will), a keyboard and voice. They have a hard time finding sheet music for that particular set, but I think improvisation is actually better.

I have just discovered something: William McGonagle and Julia Moore were very likely the parents of rap!

E.g., read this pausing at the //:

Alas! // the people now do sigh and moan
For the loss of Wm. // Ewart Gladstone, //
Who was a very great politician // and a moral man, //
And to gainsay it // there's few people can.

And, from Ms. Julia (same reading deal):

Come, freeman, // now arise,
Put your shoulder to the wheel //
This Presidential elec // tion;
Vote for an independent man, //
One in favor of greenbacks,
In this great finan //cial question.

Also, ignore the authors' punctuation.

Then Mom staggered up from down below
And kicked Amos into the hold,
Saying "I'll tell you when you lubberly men
Can come up and play at bold.
Bonney Ann and Mary Reade and the immortal Granuaile
Have shown you're not Poseidon's favorite folks --
And don't forget Alvida fair, and the wonderful Ching Shi.

"Now git below, 'cause it's started to blow
Harder than you've ever seen,
Let those who know run 'er through the snow,
The wind, the sleet, the rain.
Now git below! To yer hammock git!
We women will pull 'er through
Like we've done with everything else when you men have said, 'We're
                               screwed.'"

We stubbed our toes and snubbed our hawse
And let the hook run free
In the Thirty-Five, Two-Eighty sands
Bound for Thirty Five and Three,
But the Man of Books dragged up our Hook
ANd a squall began to blow
And our Mom she staggered full of drink
Down to her bunk below.

Now the yards did squawk, and Little Hawk
Allowed he'd set us right.
And he grabbed the helm and hollered loud
And swung her toward the night.
Well she answered well, it grew black as hell,
And the Hawk he grew afeared.
He swore he wished he'd stood to home
And tried to grow a beard.

Then to the prow bold Eisely went, and grasped the striker's chain
And she peered into that endless dark, with all her might and main.
"I thinks I sees a light to port!"
She called into the fray.
So Stilly grabbed the bleeding helm,
And bravely steered away.

ANd there we were, and here we are,
As the night waves growl and roar
A-seeking for to find our way
To The Three-Two-Five safe shore.
And the other men are sick below
And on deck there is but three,
There is Eisely ahead, and Still on watch,
These ladies brave...and me!

MMario, that's some household, with a B-I-L with a broken hip and MOM staggering around trying not to trip over him. I hope the two don't collide in the hall one night. Be sure you have night lights in the halls and on the stairs. You might even want to put in a motion-activated light on the stairs. At least that way you'd be able to see who it was who fell down the stairs when you rush out into the hall in the middle of the night.
