I rest my case; the cloudiness and pretentiousness of his simple retort are sans pareil.

If you're too lazy to go out to Google Translate and just try the Mudcat translate link you're not likely to get something that can be flogged into meaning, at least not with that last batch. Or so it seems. I have been dumbing down some of the Google toolbar links, but perhaps I should put that icon back.

Well, that's a pretty good story, Amos.

My comment expressed general disbelief that any creature, however small (or large) that had been granted the wings of a turtle-dove would be capable, much less desirous, of flying up the nose of any librarian, however long (or short) said nose may be. Actually, capability takes a lesser place here to advisability.

So, rendered out of Dutch (as you all knew, of course) is my exclamation:
What do you know about a forest fire on the ocean? You haven't even been swimming in a lake!

Chere Eisley: I have indeed swum in lakes and have faced tornados, if not forest fires, on the ocean. The simple reason of course is that forests do not grow in the ocean, aside from kelp forests which do not go in for the forest-fire shtick. But if I merited your rejoinder I would find it stunning, and I have decided never again to contemplate flying up any librarian's nose.

You will all be greatly relieved, I am sure, to learn that quantum cryptography protocol doesn't require shared reference frames. I had been a bit worried for Gluon's sake.

We should all aspire to excellence in BS, and one of our many sources of information should include knowing all the gossip about every number we use.

This post will probably be 34561. 561, now, just for example, is square free AND a Carmichael number, a sort of pseudo-prime.

"The composite integer n is a Carmichael number if bn-1 = 1 (mod n) for every integer b which is relatively prime with n.

Carmichael numbers behave like prime numbers with respect to the most useful primality test, that is they pretend to be prime."

As for "34", it's a wild one: it is the smallest number with the property that it and its neighbors have the same number of divisors
# 34 is the magic constant of a 4 by 4 magic square
# 34 is the alphanumeric value of ONE.

Howja like THAT gossip?

Your translation from the Irish is still wrong, Amos, and time will not correct you it. That is something only you can do, for you must make amends for the errors you create in the Universe I have created. If you do not, your soul will become warped and twisted and mangled until it looks like a "Before" photo of Ebenezer Scrooge.

NuNu the Goldfish died peacefully at home of old age on March 8, 2010. S/He was 12 years old. First pet and companion of Sum Yung Sun, Nu-Nu entered our lives late one Sunday in May of 1997 when a tired looking but kindly Carney lady handed over an inch long feeder fish in a water-filled baggie to a 4 year old at his first carnival, telling him he had almost got the coin in one of plates, and his effort deserved a prize. S/He grew and prospered, graduating to larger bowls, then to progressively larger aquariums as the distance increased between his gills and tail. He fiercely opposed all efforts to provide him with goldfish companions over the years, but did not seem to much mind the cat who perched for hours daily on the aquarium lid, occasionally squeezing a paw through the gap between the filter/pump and lid. He survived algae blooms, power outages in the dead of winter, aquarium leaks, and over-feeding. NuNu was approximately 7 inches long at the time of his death.

His body will lie in state in the freezer until the soil warms in spring, when he will be interred beneath the planting hole of a German Johnson tomato. A memorial service will be held sometime in early July, by invitation only, depending on how many tomatoes are ripe at that time.

May S/He rest in peace.

Oh! hush thee, my baby, the night is behind us.
And black are the waters that sparkled so green.
The moon, o'er the combers, looks downward to find us
At rest in the hollows that rustle between.
Where billow meets billow, there soft be thy pillow;
Ah, weary wee flipperling, curl at thy ease!
The storm shall not wake thee, no shark overtake thee.
Asleep in the arms of the slow-swinging seas.

Rudyard Kipling

I think this applies to a different kind of burial, but the sentiments still apply.

Thank you. You no doubt noticed that we do pay a lot of attention to numbers here. In passing, anyway.

Janie, sorry about the fish. I had to euthanize a fish of my daughter's a few years ago. She was away at college, but the fish had remained at home. It had something that made its scales look kind of like a pine cone (can't remember what it was now, but research showed survival was impossible). I still have the clove oil around here somewhere, but the vodka was long since finished off. Even though it was just a little fish she'd had for a year or two, it was a sad occasion. Losing the cats was harder, but the fish didn't go unnoticed.

Better close the windows on the west side of the house, MOM, a thunderstorm is rolling over the top of us again. This is our "20%" chance of rain again today.

When I return to Pocatello on Monday next, I shall have the Idaho Legion fire a 21 gun salute, assuming they can find the blank ammunition. The City has told them in no uncertain terms that using live ammunition will no longer be tolerated and could result in a fine of no more than $25.00 according to city ordinances.

About priorities:
A while ago I was driving to an appointment and passed a For Sale sign taped to the bumper of an old car. The sign was offering a musical instrument for a cheap price! I was in a hurry and couldn't stop then, but I was encouraged that it would still be there when I came back, because for one thing, they had spelled the name of the instrument incorrectly and I figured that if they didn't even know how to spell it they might part with it pretty cheaply. Unfortunately, I forgot about it when I was returning, and by the time I drove by again several days later I knew they had probably sold it. Darn! I had built up in my mind how fun it would have been to have that particular instrument. I've never played a double reed before, but I am willing to dabble, especially for a good price.

Well, then yesterday I was driving by again, so I slowed down to see if I could see the sign again. Sure enough, there it was! But this time I was driving slowly so I had time to see that the sign really said: $200.00 Obo. I thought about it some more as I was driving and then it suddenly hit me that the thing for sale was the OLD CAR, and the oboe they were talking about was really "or best offer!" How crushing! The worst part is that I was so excited about finding a used oboe that the people obviously valued so little that they would stick a misspelled sign about it to the bumper of an old beat-up car.

Yes! Good on you for figuring that out. I have enjoyed and been inspired by everything Loren Eiseley wrote, but my favorite is probably All the Strange Hours. I have to be careful when I read some books, though, because he can tend toward the melancholy and take me there as well. But the eloquence makes up for a bit of dreariness.

He has a poem about dairy girls writing secret messages on eggs.

So if I get dis Latin stuff Janie is throwin around right, she wants us to understan' as how she is portrayin an old Roman guy named Cicero, who sounds to me like he was gay, and as him she is saying in turn , empty a full understanding of the world of force this is impossible to maintain truth our wish perceptions. Forward , each mind presentation these his origin upon sensation : when no contest knowledge will be hold , if not whole sensations are true , when system of Epicurus instructor when they are. Quae to refuse mighty of sensation and to make known when nowhere can to emerge feel having to shut out proof of wish , are unable or to set forth his argumentation. Over, upon , very to destroy knowledge and knowledge they to destroy whole possibility of rationally life and deed. So Straight Philosophy supplies valor when likeness to respect of violent death ; deliberation when to struggle against dread of religious ; peace of mind , for this to take away by force whole unacquainted with of mysteries of force ; I sovereignty , for this to unloose force of prayer and excellent its different dutiful ; and , when I to rain now , Canon or Criterion of Knowledge , and Epicurus also appointed , gives a system of discerning truth out of forgery.

Or sompn. Its gobbly geek tah me, but wot the hell do I know?

The Strawberry Boxes

In the summers the girl workers in the far towns where they packed strawberries
would occasionally
write their names on a box
my name
is Mary
my name is
my name is
write to me . . .
they were lonely
in that place.

I knew from the boxes in our little corner grocery that the girls lived mostly in Arkansas.
When I worked in the hatchery the eggs came in from all over
Sometimes
an egg
would be penciled
write
please write
my name is Helen
my name
my name is
write
I am young.

Working girls from all over America were scribbling names
secretively on boxes
and hoping
somewhere
there was
the right boy
who would
answer.

I never wrote because I, too, was a worker, there wasn't time
where we turned the eggs
in the hundred-degree
temperatures
in incubators
the size of rooms,
even then mechanized.

Now, in age, I hope they made out somehow
with the local product
but I know
better.

No man is a hero in his home town. The girls always want someone
someone
who lives
over the
next hill
or in the far
city
one never sees.

Boys and girls I guess we were all lonely and didn't know
what to do,
so the girls
wrote it on eggs
or strawberry boxes:
you there
over the horizon
love me
I am lonely
write.

But then they married and kept on thinking of the strawberry boxes
and the letters
that
never came
and would never
and maybe
the man
left them?
or they
never found one?
luckless.

Maybe it is all solved now in the big cities where everyone
goes,
where no one says
lonely,
no one says
write me.

I think about it sometimes and wonder whether Mary made out
or was it Helen?
they would be
grey now,
their kids
would be
grown up,
but do the girls,
I want to know,
do the children
still write
on the boxes
in the factories:
I am lonely
my name is
my name is.
Live being
as life is
maybe they do.
If I had
strawberry boxes
to pack
I would write
remember me
my name is
a thousand times,
and watch
the trains
haul them away
over the horizon,
but the boxes
are now
green plastic;
I must find
some other way.

       G'night!
       Eiseley

But spelled correctly, of course. Eisely.

(I had pegged that connection the first time you used it, but thought it might be rushing things a little to out you so soon!)

Aha! Another meaningless milestone! Let's all get out our kazoos and play the MOABS national anthem. ;-)

Far from home tonight but at least this trusty notebook can still access this thread!

Oh no! All day during the somewhat informative conference I'm attending I kept thinking about y'all. I'm afraid I'm hooked, lined, sinkered.

Eiseley with three e's.

In other words:

Far from home tonight
The new adopted daughter
Says hello to Mom.

Many miles separate.
Ether's ev'rywhere zero.
At once, home with Mom.
