$1129 (US), I think the four of them were. I'll buy more if these work out. They're the largest frames currently available; I like Pandigital's restrained, and interchangable, frames too.

I got MOM's check today via FedEx.

Mom is also left-handed. I can tell because of the appearance of her check. It looked like this .
                              .
                               .
                               .    .
                                 . .

Those have to be cheaper than the plasma screens we bought to use for digital signage a few years ago. Good idea!

Janie, hippo birdie to you, and all that!

Mama, je suis retourne.

Mama, je suis ici.

Mama, Amos dit que j'ai une tete de merde. Groundez-il! SVP, por favor.

And in the spirit of the holiday season, I bought a 48" pre-lit wreath to hang on the front of the house. Among other things.

I also went out and ordered four (4) 15" digital picture frams for the Library. I'm going to use them for signage -- create the sign in Photoshop Elements or something like that as a jpeg, save it to an SD or similar card, and voila!

Here's a nice check, and happiest of Birthdays to you: check Rapaire's meds, would you?

Mudlark fed us more turkey and delicious walnut stuffing and we sat and sang all evening. Damn that girl has a voice on her!! She is a wonderful wily and flexible musician, too -- she did torch songs on the mountain dulcimer, most beguiling.

Never mind about Rapaire, Mom. I stayed up and washed all the dishes my own self, because you worked so hard. It wasn't hard, and he coulda helped but he was knocked out on the couch, snoring, with a belly full of turkey and Four Roses.

The why he was on the couch is someone had done the most ingenious job of short-sheeting his bed, although I have no idea who, Mighta been Pat, I guess. When she gets back from D.C. you can ask her...

No Mom, I am not quilty of short-sheeting Rapaire's bed under his snug quilty. It were Stilly. However, she were provoked.

And anyway, it was Little Hawk who gave her the idea.

Remember, I am the good child.

I went out and saw a folk concert instead. Quite good. It was a Canadian duo who do a bunch of sort of medieval Celtic theme songs. A lovely evening indeed.

Dear Mom,

This will be the last time you hear from me.

Until tomorrow afternoon sometime, that is. When I'm back home in my own little beddy-bye, warm and snuggly under the quilt.

Please don't let Amos have any more turkey. He's already sprouting wattles and a big old feather fan for a tail. I think it comes from gobbling.

And Stilly should be made to wash all the dishes.

I've done my part, completely and fully.

I've added class to the joint just by existing.

So I remain,

Your most humble, yet most favored, progeny,
Rapaire.

Today is our feast day. Mom is the chef and I am the cook - in theory. I keep having to jab her with my elbow to get her out from in front of the sink:>) She is also forever convinced that no one who is left handed can safely wield a kitchen knife and I am bound to lose some fingertips. This in spite of the fact that we southpaws are especially blessed because of our purity. It a well known fact, after all, that everyone is born left-handed, and God doesn't make you right-handed until after you commit your first sin.

The last of the tribe should arrive in about an hour. Then there will be two turkeys downstairs watching football, and one in the oven.

If our full tummies leave room for the lungs to expand with air, Annie will bring out the guitar after the dishes are away, and we'll get in a little pickin' & grinnin'.

LIfe is good.

Tomorrow I will arise around 4 a.m. in order to leave by 5 a.m. to catch the bus to Midway airport so that I can be there early enough to catch a 9:30 flight back West. Pat will have to do it too, only she's going to DC and then back West.

A good night's sleep always helps after the colossal workout of cooking thanksgiving dinner. It's like a day of being pummeled by heavy equipment in the gym. You're forced into constant motion the entire day, from when you drag yourself out of bed to start processing the bird through all of the planning stages for the rest of the meal and in between all of the picking up and cleaning and digging out serving dishes and glasses and such.

Today is my day of thanksgiving, when I don't have to do anything, when the house still looks good after all of yesterday's cleaning, and when we can look forward to open face turkey sandwiches (lots of extra gravy this year after brining the bird).

Really? I was deeply interested in girls from about the time I could walk. But I wasn't interested in them that way, of course, until I reached puberty. It didn't stop me from falling in love with them, though...I just had little or no idea what to do about it, aside from worshipping them and attending to their every stated need. ;-)

You're dead right, Amos...but what you are saying is a dire threat to the entire commercial marketing system and all that it depends upon. You know that, don't you? ;-)

"When Ruthy says come see her
In her honky-tonk lagoon
Where I can watch her waltz for free
Neath her Panamanian moon
And I say, "Aw, c'mon now...
You know, you know about my debutante."
And she says, "Your debutante just knows what you need,
But I know what you want."    - Dylan

Desire. They're all looking for Ruthy and her honky-tonk lagoon, but you can't get off the wheel until you are free of all Earthly desires.

Hot air diminishes by the the inverse of the square of the distance from any group of one or more politicians. My own theory is that the global ambient temperature has increased in proportion to the increase in the number of politicians and politician wannabees.

Sorry about Valdy, LH. I'll give Huey (a red dachsy) an extra scritch for him.

It snowed here last night too. We have a few inches of the white stuff on the ground....a peaceful shroud for our oldest dog, Valdy. He walked out into the night 3 nights ago and never came back...and I know for sure why. He was just ready to go, that's all. He was the oldest dog I've ever seen, barely able to function any longer. In human terms he was about 119 years old!

I looked all over for him that night and the next morning in the forest around back of our place and the other areas where he might have gone. Not a trace. It was like he just vanished into thin air.

Good travels, Valdy! You are well remembered.

It's SNOWING here. Mary's house is being redone (the wallpaper is quite nice, as is the painting). I slept a lot on the plane out and I'm planning to go back to bed shortly. I am pooped.

Yesterday, after they picked me up, we went to the new Cabela's store around here. I bought a pair of shoes and a book and didn't even look at the hunting and fishing departments (I did walk through the camping stuff). I asked Pat if I could by a 14 foot john boat (they could strap it on the roof of the plane home) but she made some irrelevant remarks and so I didn't.

Happy Thanksgiving, Mom. If you want something more than that watery soup Stilly serves, drop around. We've got food for six and only three to eat it.

Don't be. The new one is beautiful and once I get the trim replaced and the house painted (just the top--most of the house and garage are stone and/or brick) it will look lovely. I'll post links to before and after photos. It is expensive, but not as bad as it could have been if I'd gone with the commercial roofers. The guy who did my roof put my garage roof on five years ago when I built it. He usually works for contractors (my contractor who is painting suggested we give him a call--they work together regularly.) This roof is of the durable material the insurance company offers a rate discount for. He'll be doing another roof in the neighborhood next week, a much larger job. We're both glad to be able to cut out the middle man in this process--I saved anywhere from $2000 to $4000, depending on which commercial roofer I got quotes from. I think the neighbor will save even more--he has a shake roof with shingles on top (was that way when he bought it), so they have to remove all of it, then put on decking and then the felt and the new roof. The quote he got from the big commercial roofer was about $5 more than they were expecting. It'll take more than the day and a half that mine did.

Moonglow is coming home soon, for Thanksgiving. She wants to be here for breakfast and is afraid if she drives down tomorrow she'll be too late for buttermilk pancakes. I know how to bribe these kids! (She slept late today, so isn't driving tired, but on the night before Thanksgiving I hope they're extra careful out there.)

I put up a new design of bird feeder this week. So far I haven't detected any activity, squirrel or sparrow, but with cold weather arriving I hope to see some motion outside my kitchen window soon. I also need to trim the silverado sage so we can see over the top (it's in the direct line with the feeder, and is a favorite perch for our little avian visitors).

When they do arrive, I will once again have a source of BS.

Bird variety, that is.

In other news of great import:

"The ground state of the triangular boron lattice is electronically degenerate. The degeneracy is lifted, and the energy thus lowered, when the sheet buckles slightly. Before Tang and Ismail-Beigi's work, the buckled triangular lattice was the 2D boron-sheet structure with the lowest known energy. Researchers figured that boron nanotubes would be made of rolled-up pieces of the buckled triangular lattice, with the buckles running either parallel to the length of the tube or in helices around it. Calculations showed such structures to be stable."

While still on the fence myself, I'm starting to teeter in Obama's direction.

Politics is truly the Mother of All BS, right?

Leaving for West by god Virginia at noon tomorrow. I can't wait to get to the assorted junctions of interstate highways to sit and burn gas but no miles. The otherwise small town of Wytheville, VA, where I-77 and I-81 come together briefly, is always particularly fun. If I am really lucky, there will be a number of bumper thumpers along the way so that most of what is normally a 5 1/2 hour trip on rural freeways through a number of my beloved Appalachian ranges will turn into 10 hours that feel like Los Angeles at 5:00 for the entire length. If I am truly, truly blessed, I will get to crawl through the tunnels at both Big Walker and East River mountains at 5 miles an hour, with lots of stop and go. I love breathing fumes in long tunnels.

The selection of books on tape or CD at Cracker Barrel ain't what it used to be (or there just aren't that many really good books out recently that both a 13 y.o. and a 55 y.o. enjoy listening to. If we have a good, long book to listen to, neither of us much care how long it takes to get somewhere.   Just south of Mt. Airy we run out of NPR stations with a budget to spend on interesting programming, and just north of Mt. Airy we run out of NPR stations with enough power to pick up at all except on the ridgetops.

BUT, just outside of Winston Salem, we'll catch our first glimpse of Pilot Mountain, with it's promise of what is to come. Another 35 miles and we are beyond Mt. Airy, crossing the Virginia line, and heading up that long, 7 mile grade through to Fancy Gap. It will be daylight, and we are having a late fall. Much more colorful that we had thought, given the lengthy and severe drought we are still experiencing. That first long mountain of the Blue Ridge hugs the left side of I-77. Looking out the passenger side, the Piedmont drops away as we climb. Mt. Airy and the rest of the Arafat Valley spread out below us in a scene made for a postcard.   We are literally and laterally climbing up the side of the first of the mountains. No other mountains obscure the the vista to the right of us for almost that entire 7 mile climb. Just below Fancy Gap the grade steepens just a bit, the road curves and heads into, not just up, the mountain. Right at Fancy Gap, we cross the bump of the ridge. From here on, the view in every direction will be of long ridges, high valleys, and steep, narrow hollows. We still have 200 miles to go, but this hillbilly heart of mine knows it is home.
