To be continent and continued....

Besides, it was iced tea and damned cooling, lemme tell ya!

Such a contortionist, who manages to be half extraterrestrial and half in continent.

LISTEN, LITTLE BLOB OF SPIT! I'LL CONTORTION MY BOOT UP YOU...ah, down Sarge. Down, boy!

You're simply jealous of me, Amos.

Oh, I'm sure your right, Rapp, I am jealous of your pure white winter wonderland, your intimacy with methods of exterminating my own species, your opportunities to go dogsledding right outside your own front door, and to hang out with sternly made folks who are much clearer about right versus wrong than anyone west of the Rockies... or maybe it is something else, I can't put my finger on it.

I am not too worried, though, because your boot is already firmly lodged between your dentures...

A. The only snow around is well up in the mountains.

B. Knowing how to do something is completely different from actually doing it. If potential were reality we'd all have been dead long ago -- or enjoying an earthly paradise, but I'm betting on the first option.

C. I'm wearing Topsiders, not boots.

D. I don't wear dentures.

Cool list, Amos.

Could you list the stuff you are envious of me for too?

I know it will probably be a very long list... ;-)

Well, Rapp, if you don't wear boots I don't see how your alter-ego can threaten me wiuth them!!

Little Hawk, I envy you your dramatis personae to some small degree. I am actually glad I don't have to deal with them, but they certainly are entertaining.

Yes. I would actually really enjoy knowing Chongo, and I would find it interesting to know Penelope Rutledge too, though I don't think I could put up with either Veronica R or Winston W-J for very long. As for Shane, I have known peripherally known or at least encountered people just like him. They are much more fun to write about than to put up with in real life!

I envy you your good weather and the apparently harmonious nature of your family connections. ;-)

You envy me because I can fly, because I know Joe Bach, and because I can talk with all the dead people up here.

Don't worry about anything he says. He's just envious of you because you have bodies and he doesn't. He can't fly very well, to tell the truth: he keeps crashing into the cymbals and making one hell of a clang. It's all relative.

Albert Einstein

I must say it troubles me to hear you say you would enjoy knowing Chongo, when there is no more intimate knowledge than that of AUthorship, I suppose; I know that characters often can take the bit between their teeth and do things you do not think of, but it is never more than the Author has within his own creative wells.

So it seems to me.

I know it has been mentioned before, but at the risk of repeating myself (or someone else who wastes too much time over here), have you ever thought about what you might actually have written in all of the time each of you (and I suppose I must include myself as well) spends cogitating on the contents of this thread? And a few others?

Might put Grisham or King or Tolstoy to shame. . .

Yes, but that would require self-discipline, an organized mind, and a solid work ethic!

Amos, I assure you that my characters do take the bit between their teeth and come up with stuff all their own. Although I did give them birth, so to speak, they are all endowed by their creator with free will, so they do exactly what they want to regardless of what I might have to say about it.

Dear Mom and sibs,
Hooray! Huzzah! One more semester down! One more to go!

I did not make, alas, any improvement on my grade point average.
It was not decreased, however. (Whew!)

Now I will read the posts I missed over the past few days to catch up (or ketchup, depending on whether the posts are complimentary or condimentary).

Oh, it is so good to be back!

Stilly, here's an even more interesting take on politically correct terms in the popular culture:

Different historical terms for Blacks

Study the chart carefully, and a fascinating thing becomes clear: Only 3 times in history did the most common term "Black" become less widely used in America than some other term....and it was during...

The Civil War - "Negro" became more widely used for a brief few years.

WWI - "Colored" became more widely used for about 3 years.

WWII - "Colored" again became more widely used during the war years and shortly after.

Other than those 3 short spikes during and just after those 3 major wars, "Black" has always been the dominant term in public use.

This clearly indicates that there was some kind of government policy affecting public perceptions and habit during the war years.

The term "Afro-American" which appeared briefly in the 60s doesn't even raise a visible blip on the chart, but the term "African American" experiences a brief surge in common usage from about the mid-80s until the present. What's that about???

The abusive term "nigger" begins to show on the chart around 1830 and holds more or less steady thereafter, but at a rather low level of usage (in literature).

I find it quite intriguing that the overall most popular term "Black" only got knocked off the top spot during the three largest wars ever fought by the USA....evidently because people (in the government, I assume?) decided for political reasons that they should use some more politically acceptable term...that is, "Negro" during the Civil War, and "Colored" during the two World Wars.

He grasped me firmly but gently just above my elbow and guided me into a room, his room. Then he quietly shut the door and we were alone.   He approached me soundlessly, from behind, and spoke in a low, reassuring voice close to my ear.   "Just relax."   Without warning, he reached down and I felt his strong, calloused hands start at my ankles, gently probing, and moving upward along my calves slowly but steadily. My breath caught in my throat. I knew I should be afraid, but somehow I didn't care. His touch was so experienced, so sure.   When his hands moved up onto my thighs, I gave a slight shudder, and partly closed my eyes. My pulse was pounding. I felt his knowing fingers caress my abdomen, my ribbcage. And then, as he cupped my firm, full breasts in his hands, I inhaled sharply. Probing, searching, knowing what he wanted, he brought his hands to my shoulders, slid them down my tingling spine and into my panties.   Although I knew nothing about this man, I felt oddly trusting and expectant. This is a man, I thought. A man used to taking charge. A man not used to taking `no' for an answer. A man who would tell me what he wanted. A man who would look into my soul and say ....

"Okay, ma'am," said a voice. "All done."   My eyes snapped open and he was standing in front of me, smiling, holding out my purse. "You can board your flight now."

Amos, you silly-ass human, you should be goin' after the outfit that does the chart if that is your complaint, not after LH. I know you been on a vendetta against me for a long time, and I can understand that, cos I can be an irritatin' guy to some people bein' as how I speak my mind and don't suffer human fools gladly...but LH is a nice person, he is softspoken, he don't mean no harm to no one...so why you pickin' on him all the time, bub? What is yer problem? You want I should come down to San Diego and teach you the facts of life? Is that what you are anglin' for? Cos I will if you keep carryin' on and makin' uncalled-for attacks on LH. He didn't do nothin' different in reportin' on that chart fer the words Black/Negro/etc than Stilly River Sage did with the Indian/Native American thing....and I don't see you goin' after her over that, do I? "Indian" could also mean people from India, couldn't it, and it could mean a brand of motorcycle too, but I don't see you buggin' Stilly River Sage about that. She gets a free ticket from you...but LH gets jumped on.

So whaddya got to say about that, buster? He made a point about how the word Negro spiked in use during the Civil War years, and "colored" spiked in used during and just after WWI and WWII. That's sigificant. That's his key point...and it remains a valid point regardless of the number of occurences of the word "Black" over the whole danged period.

If you was standin' under my tree, there'd be a large coconut bouncin' off yer thick skull right about now.

Fascinating! There seems, according to the chart, to have been an unprecedented rise in both idiocy and githood since the year 2000!!! Hmmm....why do I not find that particularly surprising? ;-) Bush was elected president in 2000, wasn't he? Yes, society HAS been getting stupider ever since the turn of the new century, and we see the steady decline with things like the Patriot Act, the War in Afghanistan, the War in Iraq, the subprime meltdown, the new security measures at airports, the draconian activities of Homeland Security, etc...
