I asked, and the page at the door as we left said she was okay. We saw several of the chorus members in the parking garage (recognizable by their scores) but didn't ask again--not knowing actually who she was, and seeing young women in the groups at the cars, I didn't want to end up asking a group if she was okay, to have it turn out to be she I was asking.

And the moral of THAT story is, if you're aiming for Dracula...DON'T MISS!

Our band was playing Ravel's "Bolero" once and got lost. Kept playing the "dadiddydadiddyumpdiddydeeupda" over and over and over. Even the Director was hypnotized with it. Finally the First Trumpet stood up and started, LOUDLY, at some place beyond the diddyumpda's. The Director picked it up and we went on, skipping several measures, but the audience never knew.

A friend of mine was acting in "Dracula" and his blocking required him to run across the stage diagonally, falling to his knees and sliding to Drac's feet. He missed Drac and ended up in the first row of the audience on opening night (fortunately the stage was only about 3 feet off the floor). He got a greenstick fracture of a toe out of it, but literally jumped back on stage and continued as if nothing had happened. He said later he was more afraid of the Director than the pain....

I feel for the Alto. She must have been quite embarassed, not to mention bruised. I hope she's okay.

My heart goes out to her (the alto). Is she okay?

Just a quick "Hello, MOM!" and I'm off to walk the dogs. My weekend was tied all to pieces (sorry about mixing the metaphors, MOM, but I'm in a hurry) with a conference and a last minute decision to take Moonglow to a symphony concert last night in a town northeast of Dallas. Very nice, and a little added drama of a young alto pitching head first off the risers, nearly hitting the French horn player on her way down. She was revived and led off stage, and no doubt cried her eyes out backstage, poor kid. I think the build up to the fourth through the rather sleepy third movement probably got to her. Standing in that front row hyperventilating, then out like a light. The chorus for Beethoven's ninth was a very talented group from the University of North Texas (where Moonglow attends). The French horn player dropped everything and scrambled to help the girl, and then in a calm and efficient manner the kettle drum player and the back row of the orchestra helped replace chairs and stands and then the fourth movement got underway.

If Moab takes on a magenta hint for the next few days, please do not be alarmed. I've been pickling Beetroot, so anything I come into conatct with for a few days will be slightly red or purple, unless you bleach it, in which case it goes yellow, I think. Or was it yellow tumeric stains go purple when bleached. One or the other....

"We have actually touched the Borderland where Matter and Force seem to merge into one another, the shadowy realm between the Known and Unknown ... I venture to think that the greatest scientific problems of the future will find their solution in this Borderland, and even beyond; here, it seems to me, lie Ultimate Realities, subtle, far-reaching, wonderful."

? Sir William Crookes, 1879

It was not known then, and is scarcely acknowledged now, that there is an intimate connection through these boundary regions between perception, reality and the thin layer between them that defines human nobility, the BS layer. Like a flimsy sandwich wildly oscillating in 7 dimensions simultaneously, this composite construct defines the region of the mind-matter-spirit paradox and reveals, as one always knew would someday occur, its rational architecture hidden beneath its phantasmagorical presentation to the casual inquirer.

For it is here, in this multi-dimensional layering, that the true nature of reality and the inexplicable attraction of BS can be explained.

It is toward the end of making this discovery more widely known and more greatly appreciated, especially by those leading members of our beguiled society, that they might remove, by their influence, the shadows of both wilful and innocent obscurity under which we all have hitherto fallen for most of our days, that this small work (which properly seeks to elevate the part understood to be played by BS in the Cosmic Scheme to which we all are heir) is commited.

This work seeks, in its nature, to serve all Mankind. But in its proper realm and time, it is only meet that it be dedicated to William of Orange.

A Poem for Mother After the Fashion Of the Great Librarian

To grunt and sweat under a weary life,
But that the dread of BS after death,
The undiscover'd country from whose bourn(e)
No traveller returns, puzzles the will
And makes us rather bear those threads we have
Than fly to others that we know not of?
Thus conscience does make cowards of us all;
And thus the native hue of resolution
Is sicklied o'er with the BS cast of thought,
And enterprises of great pitch and moment
With this regard their currents turn awry,
And lose the name of action.

One last thing, Mom. You know that party, the Conference reception, that had the theme of "The '70s"? Well, Mom, as you know, that's pretty vague, but I was going and, well, I may have gotten a bit confused and anyway, while everyone was wearing miniskirts and bellbottoms, I just caused comment.

Mom, I'm going back North this morning. Can't take no more of this big city high life. Nope, it's the open range and the deer and the antelope playing for me. Back to where men are men and women wear pants too. Back to the Lonesome Prairies, where the tumbling tumbleweeds tumble and the wind blows free and the buffalo poop in the yard. Where a your darlin' don't forsake you on this your wedding day and the man who shot Liberty Valance is still the bravest man of all. Where Mariah blows through your hair as you sit around Fred the Fire waiting for Arbuckle's the coffee to boil so you can git them little doogies along to Wyoming, their new home after you rope and cut and brand 'em from the back of Old Paint. Little Joe the Wrangler'll be waitin' for me at the Long Branch, his arm around Matt Dillon and Miss Kitty'll have a big glass of Redeye for me and Doc will be right there to fix me up after I drink it.

Yep, I'm aheading back to where a friend is a friend and the longhorn cattle feed on the lonely jimson weed, totin' my old .44. And I'll be signin' all the songs that the cowboys know, too. The Duke'll be there to welcome me, I'll betcha.

Anyway, in a bit I'm heading back north, pointing the ol' Honda up I-15....

Biscuit-Eatin' Barney was in town this afternoon. I wouldn't normally mention this -- heck, danged few people even care to think about him, much less mention him -- only he saw me as I was heading for the shuttle bus over in front of the Salt Palace convention center and much to my dismay he came over to talk to me.

Naturally, the folks I was with moved upwind quite a piece. Seems like Barney was in town because he was tracking "the biggest and god-damnedest critter" he ever found out about. He had picked up the tracks in Pocatello about a week ago and he'd followed 'em clear down to Salt Lake City.

Being a nice sort of chap, I gave him a fiver so he could get some beer, got on the shuttle bus and went back here for a quick pre-drinking bout nap.

I tell you all this because it was just on the news that Barney was in the hospital. Seems he was busy following the tracks when he was run over by the train.

I saw some elaves sleeping. They were in the middle of a pile of empty wine bottle -- and damned CHEAP wine, too! -- and smelled like a pile of unclean hogs. Even the lady elaves were en deshabillement, so to speak, and it looked for all the world like it had been one helluva an elave party.

I am sorry to see Mother sleeping
On such a pleasant day
The lamb-wool clouds are sweeping
Across the broad sky-way
The sun is gaily calling
RInging from every glen,
"Come out! The elaves are falling!
And won't be back again!"
But Mother must be tired
Perhaps he back is sore
From carrying ever forward
Ten thousands posts and more.
Perhaps her heart is weary
With woes she private keeps.
But, I wish she were more cheery,
I am sad to see her sleep.

Nah, ever since the Winter Olympics you can go into a restaurant or bar and just buy a drink. Heck, there are five or six brewpubs in downtown and the town is getting its very own 'boutique' distillery. They still have state liquor stores, but I can even buy a bottle or six of wine right here in the ol' hotel.

The mayor of SLC, Rocky Anderson, has appeared at rallies and spoken out again the Iraq fiasco and GWB. By 2020 the Census folks expect Mormons to be in the minority here....

Now the Conference enters its final day, and the attendees will each and severally tomorrow take their various ways home. For some this will be an international flight, a flight to Australia or the UK or Mexico or even (dare I mention it?) Canada. For others it will be a flight to the East, to Virginia or Massachew...Massych...Vermont, or to the Great Pacific Northwest, or to the deserts of Arizona.

But for me, hell, tomorrow is the President's Reception and I'm invited. Gonna drink myself silly with the other former organizational officers, gonna booze it with the old timers, gonna make whoopee (as much as one can) in Salt Lake City.

And drive home on Saturday.

I hear ya, MM -- and as for five-dimensional Yukawa coupling, I have never mastered it. I hear it is something you have to be born into, as it were, like a taste for Chinese fried grasshoppers. Amateurs and foreigners who have ventured to the Yukawa tribal lands to learn it are usually reported to have seriously injured themselves, if they report back at all. I understand it is the fifth dimensional rotation that really cooks it.

In other news, a well-known physics head Roni Harnik, who explores the dynamicsof parallel universes for fun, has ths abstract:

"The observed flavor structure of the standard model arises naturally in "split fermion" models which localize fermions at different places in an extra dimension. It has, until now, been assumed that the bulk masses for such fermions can be chosen to be flavor diagonal simultaneously at every point in the extra dimension, with all the flavor violation coming from the Yukawa couplings to the
Higgs.
We consider the more natural possibility in which the bulk masses cannot be simultaneously diagonalized, that is, that they are twisted in flavor space. We show that, in general, this does not
disturb the natural generation of hierarchies in the flavor parameters. Moreover, it is conceivable that all the flavor mixing and CP-violation in the standard model may come only from twisting,
with the five-dimensional Yukawa couplings taken to be universal."

I just think that is SO elegant.

Not at my place they don't! They're estimated into our overall budget -- seems like in Idaho moneys designated for libraries MUST be spent on libraries and cannot be spent otherwise. In fact, the city can't even tell us how to spend the money raised for the library as long as it's spent legally (and ethically and doesn't embarass the city). In effect I have a large bag of money under my desk to spend as I wish and the library fines and fees all go into it.

Very soon we'll be taking credit and debit cards. THAT money will go directly into our account at the city (the city does act as our fiscal agent), but again, it must be spent for library matters.

This is Idaho state law.

And just as a point of interest, all library money deposited with the city is put into accounts prefaced with the numbers --

007.

Yep. Shaken not stirred. The name is Bond, James Bond. We're the city's 007 accounts.

Library folks are very interesting people! Mom knows that! Why do you think she has all of us still visit our local library every couple of weeks, and gives a gentle scold if we accidently keep our books or movies too long? (I say gentle, because she used to think the fines we paid went to the library to support their work, but she has since learned that they go straight into the city general fund. For shame! For shame!)

Well, he worked for the San Joaquin Valley Library System before he moved for FL, following his girl friend (whom he has now married). He's one of the most knowledgeable of the Sysadmins who are at this conferenece, he likes good hoppy beer, collects knives and daggers, and he's a pretty good guy all the way around.

Now Marge, she's going around with a modified "First Time Attendee" ribbon, only she's changed "First" to "Last" because she's retiring at the end of the year.

And of course Gretchen was here and I had nice talk with her, and with Jim and Q and all sorts of folks. Why, one of them even said six or seven words to me before taking off to talk to someone he considers more important (let's just say that he has a very high opinion of himself and is working in his last job in this region -- I know of no one who considers him a) competent to be a library director and b) a decent human being).

My name badge has three ribbons on it. They read "Horizon" (the automation system we use), "Directors' Forum" and "Former Board Member" ('cause once, long ago, I was President of this mess). I could tie it around my waist and use it as a breechcloth....

Dear Mom,

I got my photo taken at the reception! Imagine my surprise when I arrived in stock, shirt, waistcoast, and tricorn (and trews and shoes, of course!), ready to boogey down to the minuet and the reel, only to find that the theme was the 1970s and not the 1770s! Nonetheless I had a decent time, ate some okay food, drank some good wine and beer, and now I have returned ready for an early beddy-by time.

And Mom -- Al has come out of retirement! He could only stand it for a couple of years and now he's back. He's still nuts, of course, but if you worked for 26 years in California you'd be nuts too -- and then there are those five or six years in Florida on top of it. But he's back and working in Florida again. I gave him my last Brand Cap.

Later, Mom.

Your favorite kid,
Rapaire

That's just L space, it's just moving via another set of dimensions, to appear to jump between two unconnected points instantly. All you need is a big enough heap of words to distort space enough, and MOAB reached that size some time ago....

We tried beheading the King at one point, and found the alternatives were worse. So we tried Royalty mark two, who knew their place. Simple measures, such as importing a prince from somewhere good to replace the king who's rocking the boat too much, work.

I have neither sword nor gun. Only my small pocketknife and my pen, which overcomes tyranny and makes monarchs tremble! Yea, it is written upon my pen "This Pen Beheads Kings" and on the flip side "Will Work For Money."

Librarians has long known about the imparting of information via teleportation. We know, dudes and dudettes, we know! And in your heart of hearts you know that we have always known, so you have known that you knew that we know, and that's no shit.

Post - Top - Home - Printer Friendly - Translate

Subject: RE: BS: The Mother of all BS threads

Although teleportation is associated with the science-fiction series Star Trek, no one is likely to be beamed anywhere soon.

But the achievement of Polzik's team, in collaboration with the theorist Ignacio Cirac of the Max Planck Institute for Quantum Optics in Garching, Germany, marks an advancement in the field of quantum information and computers, which could transmit and process information in a way that was impossible before.

"It is really about teleporting information from one site to another site. Quantum information is different from classical information in the sense that it cannot be measured. It has much higher information capacity and it cannot be eavesdropped on. The transmission of quantum information can be made unconditionally secure," said Polzik whose research is reported in the journal Nature.

Quantum computing requires manipulation of information contained in the quantum states, which include physical properties such as energy, motion and magnetic field, of the atoms.

"Creating entanglement is a very important step but there are two more steps at least to perform teleportation. We have succeeded in making all three steps -- that is entanglement, quantum measurement and quantum feedback," he added.

(CNN Science News)

I want to talk about entanglement. Here on the MOAB, as elsewhere on the 'Cat, we seem to have had a number of very significant successes at that part, but it has done nothing to improve the quality of the information involved. This may be because we are actually accessing a meta-level of informatics, tuning in through the rubric of BS to the actual multi-dimensional nature of qubit information. Or it may just be because we are a buncha dumb fucks.

What are your thoughts on this?
