You don't know what a dalek is! you poor, deprived soul! Daleks

From Wikpedia.

The Daleks (pronounced "DAH-lecks" or "DAH-licks"; IPA: 'dɑːlɛks) are a fictional extraterrestrial race of mutants from the British science fiction television series Doctor Who. The mutated descendants of the Kaled people (originally refered to as "Dals") of the planet Skaro, they travel around in tank-like mechanical casings, a ruthless race bent on universal conquest and domination, utterly without pity, compassion or remorse. They are also, collectively, the greatest alien adversaries of the Time Lord known as the Doctor. Their most infamous catchphrase is "EX-TER-MIN-ATE!", with each syllable individually screeched in a frantic electronic voice (download sample). Other common utterances include "I (or WE) OBEY!" to any command given by a superior.

The Daleks were created by writer Terry Nation and BBC designer Raymond Cusick and were first introduced in December 1963 in the second Doctor Who serial. They became an immediate hit with the viewing audience, featuring in many subsequent serials. They have become synonymous with Doctor Who and their behaviour and catchphrases are part of British popular culture.

The word "Dalek" has entered the Oxford English Dictionary and other major dictionaries (the Collins Dictionary defines it rather broadly as "any of a set of fictional robot-like creations that are aggressive, mobile, and produce rasping staccato speech"). It is also a trademark, having first been registered by the BBC in 1964 to protect its lucrative range of Dalek merchandise.

The term is sometimes used in a metaphorical sense to describe people, usually figures in authority, who act like robots unable to break their programming. John Birt, the controversial ex-Director-General of the BBC, was called a "croak-voiced Dalek" by playwright Dennis Potter in August 1993. The Daleks even appeared on a postage stamp celebrating British popular culture in 1999, photographed by Lord Snowdon.

What is a Dalek? Why a show of hands?

I know what dogs and kilts are, but I've never seen a dog wearing a kilt.

Althouigh she is also rather entheuiastic about alot of very random things indeed. I don't want to think what possible connection kilts, Daleks, any animals except dogs and Show of hands could have

Sorry -- I forgot that Scotland, Wales, and Cornwall share the same island as England. The Three obviously do not need to be any sexier than they are. If they were the world would be completely overrun with Celts.

I'll see what Crystal thinks of that!

Unless I'm very much mistaken you'll hear the laughing in Idaho, and Houston, and the rest of Texas, and wherever Gluon and the Freds current are...

Oh, wait! I think he went to CISCO Houston, not Whitney! It would certainly be more in keeping with Amos' character, such as it is. But then again, he has depths yet unplumbed, so maybe it's both. Amos, Cisco and Whitney -- what a group! They could tour as, let's see -- perhaps under the name "The Four Freshman!"

Yeah!

Well ma'am I AM in Houston, where I said I was gonna be. COme over for dinner! It's a lot closer than San Diego! I am in the fifteenth floor fo the Hilton looking out over the beautiful city. Tomorrow its events and presentations all day. But, it's a living, and it's not under the umbrella of our furless C in C so I ain't bo=itchin'! :)

The Freds better not mess with Gluon; limbs or no limbs he could relocate their Eigenstates so fast they wouldn't know whether they were being or unbeing!!

For someone who has gone away, Amos sure comes back a lot!

It has been difficult to load today, and there were difficult times over the last couple of days. Just keep trying.

BWL, I'm going to be replacing the hard drive in a computer of a friend this week. I hope that's all that is wrong with it (I think they got something virus or worm-wise in there so nasty that it ate up the registry and such, and the computer got moved a lot and the old hard drive was small and old. . . And $50-60 for a new small drive is still less expensive than buying a new computer.

freds, I let the dogs sleep in the house tonight (it got so cold out that the garage is not a comfortable venue), so don't try coming by here looking for anything with DNA that might offend you. These two girls will tear you ear from navel (I heard you don't have any limbs).

What is this Tavern? Should we go there? The one you call Rapaire has defective DNA and we had to terminate the offspring. Fortunately only three freds were destroyed doing so, and they had already castigated themselves. What is the creature you call Amos? And can't you control that Gluon thing better? Itshehe has urinated upon Clemmy's azaleas tomorrow. Thank you.

Hi, Mom!

Sorry I haven't been around much lately. I've been busy trying to get my new chrono-spatial anomaly generator working. My old one gave up the ghost last week and it was going to cost more to get it repaired than what I originally paid for the thing. Money's a bit too tight to buy a new one right now, so I bought a kit from Radio Shack. It has all the features of the most expensive prefab models for about half the price. Problem is, it's not working right.   It'll send stuff wherever and whenever for a few milliseconds, but then it cycles back to plain old here and now. It's very frustrating. I'm sure I put everything together correctly. Maybe they accidentally sold me the Canadian version (208V) instead of the U.S. version (240V). Do you know where Gluon is? Maybe he could figure it out.

Can't all the effort being put into putting more computers in to cars be redirected to makeing the mechanical engineering more reliable, and the computers un-necessary?

I just finished painting the hall. It was rather dark, it is now less so. I may have also painted my ear, jumper, shoes etc....

Be aware that next generation's automobiles will be more self aware than most people:

SELF-MONITORING CARS TO DETECT OWN FAULTS, December 05
Discovery News has reported a major leap forward in automobile technology: future cars will be able to diagnose and monitor their faults. According to the report, the new technology will determine which parts are damaged and state how long they can last. Scientists are aiming to make vehicles equipped with this facility available in the next few years.

I know lots of people who will call you, and if you don't answer, they'll call back two minutes later, again, and again, and again, and again, and again, and again, and again, and again, and again.

Anyone that did that to me would regret it. probably about the third call.

My wife gets wrong numbers on her cell phone. Then they press the redial button and are annoyed to get the same wrong number. Her response is to question their intelligence and that of their ancestors.

Amos is off to Houston -- Whitney Houston. Why this is I do not know -- perhaps something about Bobby Brown and his (Amos') infatuation with Whitney.

You bet he does! Raparie has had a fascination with edged objects ever since his biological mother refused to knives on the dinner (for YEARS!) after she found that he and his brothers had, one evening, filched theirs and were "sword fighting" with them in the bedroom. Something about the sound of clanging steel attracts parental types....

SRS, I'm in the process of buying disaster supplies at work and I'm going to get a couple or three LED lanterns. I'm also looking into getting LED lamps for staff desks, instead of using the fluorscent lights way up in the 15' ceilings in administration (for one thing, every time we need to change a bulb we have to call the electricans!).

Did Amos say he was going to Houston?? You don't think...he's going to...join...the MOB, do you?

Just this evening a friend sent me this link: http://www.superbrightleds.com/led_prods.htm. Considering how long they burn, he did the math on a hypothetical couple of bulbs, one incandescent, one LED, and came up with a huge savings (assuming if you keep buying a new incandescent bulb every time it burns out to keep burning beside the equivalent LED bulb.)

Well, I think a lot could be developed just using ordinary lensing technology and Stirling engines. I also think when we get to the point of nanofabrication we'll be surprised what a roof tiled with nano-scale wind-, sound-, light- and transient vibration converters will do. A good chunk of dough and determination is needed to cut through the evil grip of vice on new thinking. There's a huge amount of energy involved in just lifting water up and dropping it down which could be used intelligently. There's also a gigantic tidal pump somewhere near here that raises and drops unimaginable masses of water twice a day. So my sense of the situation is that it requires more than anything else a clear focus. Hell, there's no reason you couldn't have a little nuclear plant the size of a VW behind your barn if they engineered it well enough. I am more than a little fed up with the dissipation of attention in the area and the failure to find a way to focus efforts in a viable path.

But yes, I think that that would be a worthwhile thing to do. Which is probably why it won't ever be done. Unfortunately.

What would happen if the United States, seized with moral rejuvenation, led an international campaign to provide low-cost energy not just to its own citizens but to every village, city and outpost of human life on the planet?

I believe it could be done for about as much, or less, than the wars in Afghanistan, Iraq, and maybe Granada, have cost us.

Cheap stoves, cheap energy, and an effective management of water would change the face of civilization for the better, rather than continuing to scar it with disfiguring Stupidity- Transmitted-Diseases. Beating swords into ploughshares for the 21st century has a certain charm to it, don't you think?

My problem was also pneumonia. I had chloromycetin in the IV drip -- tablets didn't work. Chloromycetin isn't used for that anymore.

When I started High School the gym wasn't ready, so we kinda wandered around outside for gym class. Same thing the second semester. Labor Day weekend of my sophomore year I had pneumonia, so I didn't take gym that year either. Junior year I had a foot operation and missed gym there, too. First semester of my senior year I just skipped it; in the second semester the gym teacher (who also taught civics and history) asked me, "Aren't you supposed to be in gym class?" and after I allowed that yes, I was, he said, "Well, you haven't made it in three and half years, so don't start now."

A week after I graduated I started Basic Training -- the old teacher laughed when I came home on leave.

I spent several months in or near a similar condition -- I had ignored a bad case of pneumonia until it was almost too late and it took two quart bags of fluids and one of antibiotics to snap me out of it. Even so I was as weak as a kitten in a surfzone for months.

But I did get to take some interesting peeks over the Mortailty horizon. I concluded that the body's memetic field is VERY distorted and that this must be one of the reasons losing a body is so disorienting -- it's like a media-addict, thinking the world is as shown on TV, and then unexpectedly having his set die and having to deal with reality directly, instead.

NPR had an interview today with a man in W. Vga whose house is surrounded by 12 satellite dishes and who is planning on a 13th. He has access to over 5000 channels. Asked how many TVs he had, he replied, "only 3!".

Another report stated that the AVERAGE American citizen spends over 4 hours, channel surfing. PER DAY!!

I do less than that in a year, but I spend time web surfing and reading.

A long time ago I had a fever of 104. I hallucinated and ended up in the hospital -- the only way to break the fever was an IV drip. I remember waking up feeling pretty good; they took the needle out and after the nurses, etc. left I decided to get out of bed and get my clothes. They were on a chair about three feet away. I didn't make it, I barely had strength to crawl back up into bed from floor I collapsed on.

Good luck to the kid from someone who's been there.

Gluon has agreed; he will be quantizing the Moonglow futures-sheaf probability matrix and doing his best to resolve the Eigenstates according to the preferences you have expressed. To do this, he rapid-assesses the relationship of quanta-bonds in the sheaf of possibilities and withdraws Gluonness from those that lead the "wrong" way. This has proven very useful--for example, when the Air Force thought I should go to Vietnam, but I never did. Most peculiar, that dog, but a good friend.

Turns out the lower temperature when she went out the door with Dad last night was just a fluke. She's back up with the high fever again overnight. 104 is not fun. Doctor is keeping track of this, says it's something that is going around. Maybe Gluon could go sleep on her feet over there, since all of her cats and dogs are over here with me. It seems that purring on your chest when you're sick is written into the cat job description, and it does provide some comfort.

The cell phone is an excellent investment in parental survival, as long as he subscribes to the "if it rings, answer it" school of behavior. Sooner or later she will learn that answering her cell phone is optional.

Rapaire is just trying to distract MOM and Amos from noticing that he was running with sharp stuff. Cute link, though. Looks like something Moonglow would turn up with. (She's better now, BTW, after four days of high fever and headaches--now her mother can rest up from a rather trying week, which started with a phone call at 4:30am on Tuesday--Moonglow felt so cold and achy that she didn't want to walk next door to my room to tell me, so she called me from her cell phone. . . resourceful, and funny in hindsight, but alarming to get that call and hear your child say "Mom, I don't feel good." My mind flashes around to where she might have gotten to. "Where are you?" I ask. "In my room," she replies. Sheesh.)

However, I was stirred to interject BS when I saw entirely too many posts here being dedicated to weapons of obsessive destruction.
