It's just as the Bee Gee's prophicised, in their all time boy band cover song favourite, 'Words'

"You think that I don't even mean a single word I say.
It's only words, and words are all I have, to take your heart
away."

You have to worry about "C" "M" "L" and "D" as well.

If people should run low on "I's - lover case "l"'s might suffice.

It's already happening, you see -- Bunn didn't have enough numbers to add two thousand and five to his post.

I would suggest we revert to Roman numerals, since V's and X's have always been underutilized figments of the typographer's art. I agree that "I"'s have been greatly abused in the last century, but they may enjoy an opportunity to do less ambiguous work for a change.

Okay, I've done my bit. MY numbers are well stored in non-corrosive atomospheres inside inert barrels. My gusns are loaded and ready to defend my numbers from hoards of rampaging mathematicians, statisticians, and actuaries (I'd use guns instead of gusns except that I don't want to actually hurt anyone).

What you do with the information is up to you.

Tomorrow I inform the Legion of the impending shortage, so get your numbers before your number is up.

In that case, I'm claiming 12,345. We'll be there by christams at this rate....

I don't believe young children should paginate. They should wait until they are older.

...and five gallons of water per family member, candles, a bag of junk silver coins, at least a month's requirements in cash, a crank-powered radio, and plenty of Saran Wrap and duct tape.

WARNING!! WARNING!!! WARNING!!!!

ALERT! ALERT!! ALERT!!!

All MOABites! Take head!! Listen up!!! Be Prepared!!!!

I am letting you in on a secret so that you can Be Prepared when the time comes. You can either listen to me and come out of the Coming Crisis wealthy beyond your wildest fantasies, not to mention alive and healthy, or broken in health and spirit, destitute and scuttering in the gutter for a discarded cigar butt for dinner.

I am refering to the impending Number Crunch.

The world is running out of numbers. IP addresses are already scarcer than hen's teeth, ISBNs are getting that way, and Who Know What Will Be Next. Well, I do and I'm gonna let you in on it because Mother's children can and must survive the Number Crunch. And I'm doing this for free, because I'm a good-hearted sort of guy, but who wouldn't turn down a gift or a percentage of the take, either.

But what isn't widely known -- YET -- is that we are running out of ALL numbers. Think about it. Mathematicians have known for centuries that this day would come; why do you think that they call them "finite numbers?" And because of the current crowd in governments world-wide we are quickly running out of rational numbers, too! Integers, once the mainstay of arithmetic and accounting, are now replaced by...by...imaginary numbers!

These trends will culminate in your lifetime and mine (well, definitely mine, since I plan to live forever). Highly sophisticated regression analysis, applying the esoteric concepts embodied in Fermat's Second-To-Last Theorem and the crystalline arrays of Laplace Transformations, demonstrate beyond the shadow of a doubt that the world will run completely out of number no later than 2:37 p.m., April 14, 2007.

NOTE THE DATE! Americans will not be able to pay their income taxes!

But I offer to you, fellow MOABites, a chance to stockpile (i.e., hoard) numbers for the coming Number Crunch. There is a number mine here, and you can follow the links (or "veins", as numberologists call them) to more numbers. Most importantly, it doesn't matter if the numbers are pre-owned or even obsolete! Buff out the scratches and you can sell them as new! Accountants, tax attorneys, and even ordinary citizens will praise you while at the same time shelling out Big Buck$ for the numbers YOU had the foresight to stockpile. Your children and grandchildren will thank you, not to mention that they will be able to do their math homework and even paginate their term papers!

As I said earlier, this information is free. The seminars are what cost a bunch of money. And the inkjet cartridges.

I've discovered the source of the fire ants in my bathroom (coming in via a little hole under the trim quarter-round behind the commode). I also found an earring that moonglow lost a couple of weeks ago. Getting ready for the holidays means clearing up some of the pest problems before guests arrive and the jewelry recovery is a nice bonus.

I don't suppose Gluon would come chase away my fire ants but leave my dogs alone? They don't need any more encouragement to misbehave.

Hot Damn, les' talk music!

Ahem.

The Enlightenment/Age of Reason stresses balance and clarity - thus melody and phrase structure became clearly defined. Harmonic style simplifies as the numerous chord changes of the polyphonic baroque crystallize into a clear homophonic I - V - I structure. Overlapping phrases are replaced by periodic (antecedent-consequence) structures and clear cadential breaks. The meandering melodies of the baroque are replaced by short, distinct, classical motives. Counterpoint becomes the mechanism for reworking thematic material in developmental sections. Which of these practices can be traced to vocal traditions? Homophony? New forms or derivatives? Italian opera reaches its peak and the German opera tradition begins (Mozart and others).

The formal scheme is dominated by the multi-movement sonata per the trio, church, and chamber sonata, and the dance suite. Sonata means "to sound" and relates to instrumental music like canzona relates to vocal music.

We must not, however, forget that

...it is between the years 1480 and 1520 that the motet as an art-form progressed, favoured by the nascent devices of the modern school, with Josquin Després as leader. The outstanding feature of time motets of this period is the extraordinary skill displayed in weaving melodious counterpoint around a short phrase of plainchant or secular melody. Josquin (Canon of St-Quentin) stands head and shoulders over his fellows, and his motets were among the earliest printed by Petrucci, in 1502-05. In all, one hundred and fifty of his motets have been printed, the best known being the beautiful one, founded on the plain-chant theme of "Requiem æternam", on the death of his master Okeghem, and the settings of the genealogies in the Gospels of St. Matthew and St. Luke. His fellow-pupil, Pierre de la Rue, also composed some charming motets, of which twenty-five have been printed. One of the best known is founded on a theme from the Lamentations of Jeremias. Another famous motet-writer of this period was Eleazar Genet, better known as Carpentras (from the place of his birth), a priest and papal nuncio. His "Motetti della corona" were published by Petrucci, in 1514 but he is best known for his "Lamentations", which continued to be sung by the pontifical choir at Rome until 1587. A third motet-writer was Jean Mouton, canon of St-Quentin, whose "Quam pulchra es" has often been ascribed to Josquin. A fourth is Jacques Clément (Clemens non Papa), who issued seven books of motets, published by Phalèse (Louvain, 1559) Three typical specimens have been reprinted by Proske in his "Musica divina". Jacob Vaett composed a motet on this French composers death in 1558. John Dygon, Prior of St. Augustines, Canterbury, was a composer of motets, one of which was printed by Hawkins. Other English composers who cultivated this art-form in the sixteenth century were: Fayrfax, Tallis (who wrote one in forty parts), Whyto, Redford, Taverner, and Shepherd. Many of the Latin motets by these musicians were subsequently adapted to English words. Arcadelt, a pontifical singer, composed an eight-part Pater Noster; his better known Ave Maria is of doubtful authenticity. Willaert, maestro di cappella at St. Mark's, Venice, and "father of the madrigal", published three collections of motets for four, five, and six voices not a few of which are extremely inventive and melodious though intricate.

I can talk music!

Amos, is that there story sumpin' to do with music? We were talkin' about diminished fifths at the Legion Hovel just last night, an' Anne Dante said they was gettin' more diminished the longer we sat there. She's shackin' up with Al Legro right now, two Italians makin' some beautiful lasagna together. 'Course, Al's got quite a pasta to live down, but Anne's aware of it and forgives him as long as he's "con brio", which Stinky told us means "with cheese" in Italian. Anyway, Al got out of prison a year or so back, so he's really an ex-con brio, and I guess that they scrape the cheese off when they put ya in the slammer. So, I was wonderin' if that stuff had anything to do with music, because if it did it was pretty funny and if it didn't it was still pretty funny, but not as much as if it did, you know? Handsome Herb explained that some of it had to do with music, so that's why I'm askin', because Stinky and Herb have a bet about it.

A fifth e-state would only obtain in A key.

A, C, an E-flat, and a G go into a bar.

The bartender says: "Sorry, but we don't serve minors."

So, the E-flat leaves, and the C and the G have an open fifth between
them.
After a few drinks, the fifth is diminished: the G is out flat.

An F comes in and tries to augment the situation, but is not sharp
enough.

A D comes into the bar and heads straight for the bathroom saying,
"Excuse me. I'll just be a second."

An A comes into the bar, but the bartender is not convinced that this
relative of C is not a minor.

Then the bartender notices a B-flat hiding at the end of the bar and
exclaims, "Get out now! You're the seventh minor I've found in this bar
tonight."

The E-flat, not easily deflated, comes back to the bar the next night
in a 3-piece suit with nicely shined shoes. The bartender (who used to have a
nice corporate job until his company downsized) says: "You're looking
sharp tonight, come on in! This could be a major development."

This proves to be the case, as the E-flat takes off the suit, and
everything else, and stands there au naturel.

Eventually, the C sobers up, and realizes in horror that he's under a
rest.

The C is brought to trial, is found guilty of contributing to the
diminuation of a minor, and is sentenced to 10 years of DS without
Coda at an upscale correctional facility.

On appeal, however, the C is found innocent of any wrongdoing, even
accidentals, and that all accusations to the contrary are bassless.

The bartender decides, however, that since he's only had tenors for
patrons, the soprano out in the bathroom, and everything has become alto much
treble; he needs a rest -- and closes the bar.

Fish, believe it or not, can also change state. Like, from living to fresh to frozen to cooked. Kinda like proteans or auntymatter participles. This is the basis of fishing in the Yellowstone River inside Yellowstone Park -- if you catch a fish you can change its state from living to cooked simply dipping it into a nearby hot pot. If there is no state-changing hot pot handy, you can build a fire and do it the old fashioned way. I myself have undergone several state changes, having moved from Illinois to Ohio to Indiana to Kentucky to Idaho. I've also undergone some temporary state changes, in fact to every one excpet Oklahoma, Arkansas and Hawaii. I've also done several provincial changes up in Canada.

Aren't you glad you know about state changes now?

And getting back to those Californian preee-vert fishies:

"Ohio University scientists say they have determined that as female swordtail fish age, they change their mating habits.

Lead researcher Molly Morris, an associated professor of biological sciences at the Athens, Ohio, school, said as the females grow older and larger, they spend more time with asymmetrically striped males than with symmetrical males, when offered a choice.

The findings are the first to contradict previous studies indicating females tend to prefer males with symmetrical markings, which in this case are black bars on each side of the body. Scientists have suggested symmetrical markings are a sign of genetic fitness.

The study provides evidence that visual cues are not the only thing driving mate selection. The findings also suggest "females may not have the same mating preferences throughout their lives," Morris said.

Co-authors of the study were post-doctoral fellow Oscar Rios-Cardenas and undergraduate student Mary Scarlett Tudor.

Funded by the National Science Foundation and the Research Challenge Program at Ohio University, the paper has been published online in Biology Letters and will appear in next month's print edition. "

You swim, just like a woman
And you like stripes, just like a woman
And you bite, just like a woman;
But you age like a little molly.

Great wisdom indeed, Sir Rap.

Meanwhile in the 21st century, things are heating up a tad:

A small CSIRO-developed hydrogen device the size of a domestic microwave oven may be all you need to fuel your car in the future.

A team at CSIRO Manufacturing and Infrastructure Technology has developed a small device that can extract enough hydrogen per day from water to power a family car for up to150kms.

This work is an important part of CSIRO's Energy Transformed Flagship research program into positioning Australia for a future hydrogen economy.

Currently, the hydrogen unit runs on main's power, but researchers are investigating how to power the unit with renewable energy, such as solar and wind power.

While the idea of fuelling your car with hydrogen generated from a solar panel might sound like science fiction, project leader Dr Sukhvinder Badwal says concepts such as the hydrogen economy are real possibilities.

"Every time we stop at the petrol station to fill up the car we are reminded that fuel prices are not getting any lower," Dr Badwal says.

At this stage, hydrogen cannot compete with fossil fuels, but rising oil prices could create a different scenario, Dr Badwal says. "We just need to look towards future oil import costs."

He says that hydrogen is the cleanest fuel nature has given us and its portability and flexibility makes it ideal for a range of applications, including transport.

"While Australia has abundant renewable energy sources, such as solar and wind power, they cannot directly provide the portable fuel required by the transport sector. Hydrogen can fulfil that demand but, because it is not a naturally occurring fuel, has to be generated using conventional fuels or renewable sources."
