It's the vomiting along with the convulsions that have always bothered me. And the watery diarrhea, of course. But our friend Shame wouldn't be bothered by those things.

What? Oaks is raising LESBIANS now??? Why didn't anyone tell me? I could haveprovided all kinds of advice and personal guidance.

As for Shame I think his education came flooding back as soon as he swore off booze and grass. It clears the mind something wunnerful to go cold turkey--after the initial convulsions are done with.

You lot are too much. I am gonna go check with Oaks and see if his crop of newly planted lesbiens are weathering the frost.

You're darned right we are not sure that it's "Shame" (meaning Shane) who has been posting those recent messages which purport to be him!

That is exactly what I've been implying, my dear fellow. Who indeed is the puppetmaster, as Stilly put it? Who is the skulking man behind the curtain? Hmmm? Who has dreamed up this utter poppycock about Shane becoming a Christian, getting a job, etc. I know it wasn't me. Being me, you see, I'm in a good position to know that with complete and absolute certainty.

I don't take kindly to people hijacking my favorite fictional characters for their own nefarious purposes, and I know that a torture awaits them in the afterlife for having done so. Oh, yes...it will be dreadful! I'm picturing a lot of wailing, gnashing of teeth, that sort of thing.

Be warned, sir. Be warned. The fate of your soul could be hanging in the balance.

LH, I put little stock in instant conversions.

We also are not sure that it is Shame who's posting. There's more than one person named "Don" you know and more than one person in Blind River.

Shame probably thought "pending" was related to some sort of sexual activity.

It's all in the opaque curtain the puppetmaster employs, LH. We know that, and (mostly) suspend disbelief. :)

No, Rap, I have not read The Confessions of St Augustine. Nor was I referring to any of those other people you mentioned. I am simply mystified as to how Shane's alleged conversion experience has suddenly given him such a good command of the English language. He has progressed from a Grade 2 spelling and grammar level to University level in a stunningly short period of time. The very fact that he used the term "pending", a term which Shane has never in his life used before or for that matter understood, makes this indisputable.

Oh, good grief. Hanging around with people speculating and betting on who the next Pope will be, folkies, and Terry Pratchett!!!

Mom, have you no shame at all? Now pick up your pension money -- the Pope's already elected so the game is fixed and it wouldn't have been the Dali Lama anyway -- and march yourself back home and sleep it off.

You ever read The Confessions of St. Augustine?

As a youth, Francesco di Pietro di Bernardone "became a devotee of troubadours and was fascinated with all things French" and we all know what THAT means. Nevertheless, he became better known as Francis of Assisi.

I believe you're thinking of people like Maria Goretti or Margaret of Antioch or Mildred or Ursula or Thecla or John Berchmans or Expiditus.

The really amazing thing is that Shane seems to not only have converted to Christianity, stopped drinking, and taken up mature responsibilities and become a decent member of society....these things are astounding enough in themselves...but he also appears to have miraculously gained a proper understanding of English grammar and spelling!!!!!!!!!!

I provide as evidence of that, his purported last post in its entirety:

"Four weeks today! I've been promoted on the job, Don talks to me, I've been allowed back in the library pending good behaviour, and I talk with Jesus every night and He talks with me. Officer Dana smiles when she sees me working on the streets.

It's wonderful to be sober and to have found my Saviour."

He even spelled the word "Saviour" properly!!!!!!!!!! It's incredible. It boggles the mind. It may be literally a miracle. I think the Vatican should be informed at once. We may have a religious event of truly awesome proportions happening here on our very doorstep!

I predict that future generations will make pilgrimages to Blind River to celebrate the Redemption of Shane McBride, and that a shrine will be erected there to give hope to all the witless losers, worthless scum, and other such gutter-dwelling types who never thought they could rise above the vile depths of depravity into which they had sunk, due to the temptations of women, wine, song, smokes, homegrown weed, and cheap pizza.

"Gymnomorphic" means "belonging to the species Gymnomorpha" and as I'm sure you know the current synonym for that species is Systellommatophora. I apologize for using the term which was accepted back when I was in school; I should have said that Chonga is systellommatophoric.

High noon tomorrow on the main street of Dodge, outside the Alhambra, monkey-face.

Wells Fargo shotguns. 10 gauge. The recoil will knock your monkey ass ten yards backwards.

Come heeled or don't come at all.

If you don't come take your slime of cowardice like the little garden slug you are and eat some salt.

Boy, it is a sad thing to see the fantastical delusions that the mind of an underemployed Idahoan with WAY too much time on his hands slides into. Tragic, that's what it is. If it was worth my while, I'd administer a couple of sharp blows to the head of this idiot and see if that would clear his thoughts. But the fact is, it ain't worth my time. Besides, it probably wouldn't work anyway. Rap is a hopeless case.

What would a mouthy, pushy, naked, puny, tail-sucking, poop-flinging, mother pimpin' monkey know about modesty? You couldn't even find Lake Michigan if you walked east and fell into it. You think that the El is a letter following W and that the Wrigley building is made of old chewing gum. You go on about your favorite baseball team the "White Cubs" and your are afraid to go to football games because you think the Bears will catch you. The last time you walked by the Art Institute you screamed that the bronze lions out front were "gonna eat" you, and far worse, you eat your hot dogs with only ketchup on them.

I don't do shread, bei g more interested in harmonious and assonant compositions. But I celebrate her rapid embarkation. Someday she will discover Woody Guthrie and wonder "Why didn't anybody TELL me???!"

She plays very well, Rap, but I can't say I like the sound of that musical arrangement much. It grates on my ears.

It's best to start playing an instrument as early in life as possible. The amazing capacity (and time) children and adolescents have to learn something new is an opportunity that shouldn't be passed up. And the body is very flexible then too, which also helps.

Hmm. Well, the dream of my long-ago youth was someone very closely resembling either Joan Baez or Buffy Sainte-Marie, and with basically the same ideals and general approach to life as those 2 ladies, and hopefully who also sang and played music and wrote songs.

Never found her!

I did fall in love with a few other individuals along the way, and they were all quite different each one from the next, but hooking up with any of them on a permanent basis would not have worked out. This is for sure.

The only thing that I've found which has permanence for me is the particular problem and reward of life itself...until it's over.

And then? Well, we'll find out when we get there... ;-) I'm optimistic.

Never having met a rich and beautiful female nymphomaniac who owned a string of liquor stores and adored the ground I trod (the dream of my long-ago youth), I married Pat forty years ago this coming October. It wasn't a mistake at all.

While I believe that any instrument is better than none and that the trumpet is the apogee, the pinnacle, the ne plus ultra of musical instruments, I have to say that toilet paper over a comb beats a guitar all hollow.

I frankly never did find "the one", though I've known some pretty fine women along the way. I just wasn't meant to spend a lifetime in a relationship with any of them, that's all. I've met a few women I wished I was mature enough...or still young enough...to make me the right partner for them, but not this time around.

So maybe next time. (If I happen to live again.)

In the meantime, I'm putting my energies...what's left of them...on other objectives than the old desperate romantic search for "the one" dream lover who haunted my youth. That search isn't the real be-all and end-all anyway, as far as I'm concerned, though many take it to be (and that's perfectly okay for them, if that's what they want).

Sad part is, I might have been able to "not" but hindsight is usually the view of getting bitten in the arse, eh? I have heard ya gotta 20 outta 20 chance on that.

I've had the dogs sleep in the house in the colder weather, and I toss Cinnamon the pit bull's dog bed on the foot of my bed. I let them in a bit early yesterday because we had a thunderstorm and Poppy hates the lightning and thunder. Cinnamon was on her bed and for a few minutes I lay down beside her so we were nose to nose and I scratched her ears and let her give me kisses on the nose and there was a steady little "tap tap tap tap" of her tail wagging on the edge pillow of the dog bed.

You are so right, Amos. And humility ain't easy for us mortals! ;-) But anyone who at least takes it seriously enough to try to achieve a measure of it is already halfway there, I figure.

My first real guitar (aside from the aforementioned one my father bought) was a nylon string guitar that I bought about 4 years later...the make was Raven, and it was okay. Within about a year of that I graduated to my first real steel string guitar (a used Martin D-28), and since then I've had so many different ones that I'm not sure I could even remember them all now.

(I know at least one guy who's like that about women...and it ain't me!)

Thanks for the kind remartks. I also learned on an inexpensive nylon-string--my parents were so proud when I played "Beautiful, Beautiful Blue Eyes" using D, D7, G and A. That was a pretty primitive instrument and a pretty juvenile performance, back in Connecticut in 1955 or so. I have gone many miles since then but am constantly amazed at how many players there are out there who are worlds better nor me. But I don't much mind. I do my thing and the world takes it or leaves it as it cares to.

I was jamming late last night in a coffee house in Lemon Grove, and we had a fine old time. I had to get back home, though, because Maggie was missing me. She goes crazy when I get home--her body does figure-eights of excitement and her tail beats loud enough to bring down the furniture. Nice to be so adored. I could get used to it, biut I guess I better not. Humility is the heart of the happy life, no matter what Rapp says.

That was clever, allright, gnu. My Dad was such a workaholic that he wasn't around much to hear me play my guitar. He was busy trying to become the next Henry Ford or J.P. Morgan or Du Pont or something along that line...an objective he never managed to obtain, despite the most heroic efforts.

Meanwhile, I was intent on becoming an idealistic folksinger (a la Joan Baez, Buffy Sainte-Marie, Bob Dylan) and a radical socialist in support of revolutionary causes. We agreed on virtually nothing whatsoever...for the rest of our lives...and it was sheer bloody hell most of the way.
