What a difference a year makes, to be sure!

I'm dropping in before heading to bed, just doing my part to push MOM to greater heights.

I am in Quincy, Illinois, home of the Quincy Gems...wait, the Three-I League went out of business years ago. Home of...ah...David Baldwin, the balloonist! Yeah! Not even people here remember him.

One year ago today I made my first sally onto the field known as MOM. Much has happened since then, and I've found good friends and have collected some wonderful memories. Here's to much more of the same!

They do a similar "gig a frog" event in the Trinity River in Fort Worth at the Mayfest in Trinity Park in downtown. At least they used to. I'll have to check on that.

There's a smallish town called Coldwater near here. It is commonly said to be the home of someone named "Dick Shrivels, from Coldwater"...but I digress. At any rate, Coldwater has a festival once a year when they release thousands of little plastic yellow duckies into the river that flows through town. Hundreds (thousands?) of people congregate to watch the duckies float down the river and you can buy tickets or something, as all the duckies are numbered, and if your duckie crosses the finish line first, you win a prize. I don't know what the prize is. The chances of your duckie winning are almost infinitesimal, so this encourages people to buy many tickets. I think. I've never bought a ticket, but I did see the duckies released one time, and it was quite something to witness. They covered the river in a merrily bobbing carpet of yellow. I have heard that one of those plastic duckies somehow made it all the way to China, having eluded the people who gather them up, gone all the way down the river to the Great Lakes, thence out the Saint Lawrence to the Atlantic, around Cape Horn, across the Pacific, finally making landfall several years later in China. That's perservance!

What we owe to jellyfish (aside from ancestor-worship):

"In 1925 Evelyn Waugh burned his unpublished first novel, “The Temple at Thatch,” and attempted to drown himself in the sea after a friend gave it a bad review. (Stung by jellyfish, Waugh soon returned to shore.) "

Today's random excerpt from the memetic maelstrom of meandering maroons:

"At once frivolous and freighted with cultural symbolism, the plastic duck makes a perfect subject for a writer of Hohn’s ambition. “What misanthrope, what damp, drizzly November of a sourpuss, upon beholding a rubber duck afloat, does not feel a Crayola ray of sunshine brightening his gloomy heart?” he asks. But both the birth and the afterlife of the duck, Hohn soon learns, are toxic. Adrift on the ocean, the toys can become coated with “persistent organic pollutants” like polyvinyl chloride, bisphenol A and phthalates. Photodegraded into smaller pieces, they can be fatally ingested by sea creatures and will endure, in swirling gyres, for years. "

(From a NYT review of a new book, "Moby Duck", concerning a container of plastic bath-toy ducks lost overboard in the Pacific... Cui bonum??)

...the influence of these wormholes on ordinary quantum fields at low energies in the asymptotic region...

But he doesn't take into consideration the influence of wormholes on EXTRAordinary quantum fields or ordinary quantum fields at high energies. Or either in a symptotic region.

Not only is it bad science to ignore these things, you can reduce the self-esteem of quantum fields by calling them "ordinary" or "low energy." Quantum fields, wormholes, and closed universes have feelings too, you know. And to call an entire universe "asymptotic" is really insulting and degrading. I can't imagine why the peer jury even let this article be published.

Any reasonable theory of quantum gravity will allow closed universes to branch off from our nearly flat region of spacetime. I describe the possible quantum states of these closed universes. They correspond to wormholes which connect two asymptotically Euclidean regions, or two parts of the same asymptotically Euclidean region. I calculate the influence of these wormholes on ordinary quantum fields at low energies in the asymptotic region. This can be represented by adding effective interactions in flat spacetime which create or annihilate closed universes containing certain numbers of particles.

The effective interactions are small except for closed universes containing scalar particles in the spatially homogeneous mode. If these scalar interactions are not reduced by sypersymmetry, it may be that any scalar particles we observe would have to be bound states of particles of higher spin, such as the pion.

An observer in the asymptotically flat region would not be able to measure the quantum state of closed universes that branched off. He would therefore have to sum over all possibilities for the closed universes. This would mean that the final state would appear to be a mixed quantum state, rather than a pure quantum state.

We leave tomorrow, flying out of SLC at 2:05 for St. Louie, where we'll rent a car. We'll be gone for a week (Amos, the cops are watching the house while we're gone -- just a word to the wise). I'll be checking in periodically.

What I did not mention in the other thread is his ability to hash songs into extremely funny parodies. E.g.,

He drove his car to the racing ground
He was the only driver there.

does in "Tell Laura I Love Her". I wish I could remember all of them.

To Charles Williams

Your death blows a strange bugle call, friend, and all is hard
To see plainly or record truly. The new light imposes change,
Re-adjusts all a life-landscape as it thrusts down its probe from the sky,
To create shadows, to reveal waters, to erect hills and deepen glens.
The slant alters. I can't see the old contours. It's a larger world
Than I once thought it. I wince, caught in the bleak air that blows on
the ridge.
Is it the first sting of the great winter, the world-waning? Or the cold of
spring?

A hard question and worth talking a whole night on.
But with whom? Of whom now can I ask guidance? With what friend concerning your death
Is it worth while to exchange thoughts unless?oh unless it were you?

I spent all day yesterday and most of the day today putting the new book bins in place. They are beautiful! They are child-height and have room to face the picture books outward so the artwork on the cover will show. Whew! After rearranging the furniture and plotting the layout, I'm ready for a long nap.

I'm thinking about your brother, Rap. I can't remember if it is Ted or Tony who is the youngest. My best to you.

Get warm, bro, and start cracking wise;
We need you to do more than blink yer eyes.
Heal what's awry and step to the plate;
The world is patient, but love won't wait.
Bring yourself back into the scene, young brother,
Dancer and wiseacre, parent or lover.
The world will not stop its going 'round
And you must make her stable ground,
Safe for the growing out of harm.
Get warm, get warm.

I guess it was the follerin' mornin'
That old Rapp lost his mind
We'd one hundred twenty posts to make
And miles of ice behind.

It was hard to tell, in that hurtlin' wind
We was all of us snow-blinded
When we asked Raparre to take the lead
And no-one thought he minded.

He moved his rig ahead of us
All careful, fair and nice,
An' cracked his bull-whip over the dogs
And headed down the ice.

We heard him over the howlin' wind,
Yelling "Koo!! Calloo! Callay!!"
An' were hard put keeping sight of him
On the trail to the next of Kay.

inquiline (n. & adj.)

(1) A sojourner, a lodger, an indweller.
(2) An animal which lives in the nest or abode of another; a commensal or guest.

The thread was rife with the incursions of various inquilines who failed to grasp the weltanschauung of Mom and her children.

My brother awakens and there is great joy. Someone asks him, "Did you see heaven? How was it?" And he answers, "A lot colder than I thought it would be."

That really is the sort of thing he'd say.

I just returned from a 6-day trip to Yellowstone. It was colder there.

My little brother is in a medically induced hypothermic coma, but he did respond to a request to blink his eyes. They are slowly warming him up and at 96F they should be getting an idea of any brain damage. (My other brother asked me "How do you suppose they could tell if there was any?" and I replied, "That's why they're highly paid physicians." We can do that to each other.)

I wanna start 2011 over, okay?

My uncle dies, my wife has breast cancer, and now this. This is, truly, the year we must remember to forget. In fact, I'd like to reboot and start over.
