Walt Whitman In Democratic Vistas, an 1871 prose work, writes,

I say we had best look our times and lands searchingly in the face, like a physician diagnosing some deep disease. Never was there, perhaps, more hollowness at heart than at present, and here in the United States. Genuine belief seems to have left us. The underlying principles of the States are not honestly believed in (for all this glow, and these melodramatic screamings), nor is humanity itself believed in. What penetrating eye does not everywhere see through the mask? . . . . It is as if we were somehow being endowed with a vast and more and more thoroughly-appointed body, and then left with little or no soul.

Allen Ginsberg, asks, a century after the first publication of Leaves of Grass,

"America when will you be angelic?
When will you take off your clothes?
When will you look at yourself through the grave?"

The conversation is then taken up by the people who have brought you Levi's Blue Jeans since 1849, using Walt Whitman's voice from a cylindrical wax recording.

Me name's Rod Blagojevich, the ex-governor
I'm on trial though I did nothing wrong
I tried to get someone into the Senate
And now I am singing this song.

CH: With me ring-ring, and a clink-clink, and a dollar
With me ring-ring and a clink-clink and a tie-dee
Sum for a chair that is vacant
'Cause Obama had done moved away.

Our last guv was jailed for all but sheep stealin'
Me brother's a son of a bitch
Me wife's more profane than I am
And I just wanted bad to get rich.

CH.

So I put a Senate seat up for auction
And the FBI tapped all my phones
Suppose I'd appointed my own self --
You'd be deaf in Guam from the groans.

CH.

I'm not guilty of all that corruption
Nor guilty of anything else
A four hour work day just suits me
I've got mine, and yours, and who else?

CH.

So I flew home ever night to Chicago
At the Illinois voters' expense
It's not like I was stealing some money
But it made the unwashed very tense.

CH.

I'll be glad when this trouble is over
If I'm found guilty I'll be in a stew
'Cause they'll lock me up with George Ryan
In a neat little cell built for two.

CH.

... Neither a thinker nor a reader be
For thought oft loses both itself and friend
And reading dulls the edge of Fox TV.

And you talk about divisibility! Why 36663 is so danged divisible that my poor head is all a-whirl. And the square root approaches 191.47584704082132! And in base 36 it's SAF!!!

So many numbers with 666 in them, and more to come.

Dear, Dear MOM. Come inside, away from all these signs of the beast

Only old time stringband music can protect you now.

You ain't gonna find them Icelandic characters on your plain ol' vanilla qwerty keyboard, Amos! Sure, you can find a tilde or a splat or a bang, but umlauts and thorns and suchlike are a right scarce, lessen you go foolin' around. And if you go foolin' around I hope your wife catches you and and puts a cast-iron skillet where it might pound some sense into ya.

Funny how dumbed down the expression "I translate" has become. It used to imply an ability to understand two languages. Now it just means an ability to tap on a QWERTY keyboard.

CH: Bring back, bring back,
Bring back the paramedics to me, to me,
Bring back, bring back,
Bring back the paramedics to me.

This morn in a fit of composure
I translated a sentence to Cymraeg,
Into Latin and also Icelandic,
And completely threw Amos off stride!

CH.

And now as I think of poor Amos,
Limping along by the sea,
I burst into great peals of laughter,
And jump up and down in my glee!

CH (twice or more)

By the way, I've discovered that Eiseley did indeed Read The Whole Thing -- to her story hour children. Eighty-two percent were permanently traumatized, two percent enjoyed every minute of it and are now living in the so called "Giggle Room" at the local hospital, and the rest are still comatose from the shock.

For those of who have lived through every soupcon of conflation, every overtone of meandering Meaning, every iota of ionic transliteration, we may recite "I can't believe I put up with the Whole Thing". But we are dedicated souls who understand the Whole is greater than the concatenation of its posts.

(I can't believe Eiseley read the whole thing. What was the commercial? Pepto Bismol? Alka Selzer? Of I can't believe I ate the whole thing fame)

Ah, M. Paire, you seem to oscillate between defamation and projection at a terrible clip. 'Tis a wonder, it is, that you yourself do not explode at once with all that going to and fro. Never mind, I am merely a dedicated clarifier of things obscure. The only explosives I ever use are purely conceptual and semantic ones. Conceptite and Semantikex, both readily available by post from Thesaurus.com.

It is hardly news, Amos, that rotenone is a piscicide. So are certain extracts which can be made from saponins, which include the maple tree. One can also use dried and powdered walnut or hickory nut hulls or simply stir up the mud of the Ol' Fishin' Hole sufficiently to deprive the fish of the necessary oxygen.

As for explosives, you seem to be far more familiar with them than I am, which I suppose says something about your character.

Not all at the same time! Why, all the shady spots would be taken! No shade, no fish(ing). Let those who will speed around on the water in high-powered boats pretending to fish -- I'll save my money for beer and/or soft drinks and/or worms. And if the boaters try to see how close they can come to my line, well, my late friend Steve dealt with that by sitting there with an (unloaded) 12 gauge across his knees. No sirree! you just give me a shady bank, a straw hat, a cane pole, a can of worms, a sandwich and a jug and I'm happy all day, just like my grandma was. Don't really need the cane pole, neither -- a stick cut from the bank will do fine. In fact, I don't need much of anything except some string to go fishing (it's easier than makin' my own).

Rotenone, by the way, is a natural substance extracted from the root of certain plants, which constricts blood vessels in a fish's gills and causes suffocation. Also used as an insecticide. One of the plants it can be derived from is the ordinary Jicama.

Tovex (also known as Trenchrite, Seismogel, and Seismopac) is a water gel explosive composed of ammonium nitrate and methylammonium nitrate that has several advantages over traditional dynamite.

I know Rapaire likes to use these little known terms to create an air of mystery and superior knowledge, like a cloud of small insects, about his person. I think, myself, that a due respect for the clarity of thought in others' minds, compels the clarification of such terms and that making them known, and dispelling the authoritarian mystique around them, is a more liberating approach.

Dear Mom,

I've been buying fishing stuff. Like a PFD and a small waist pack to carry my lunch in. I also got a fishing chair for fishing from a beach, but not from where I've been going because there the beach is usually mud and weeds. And bugs. Many bugs. I think I'll next try shore fishing with bait at Medicare Beach on the far side of the AF Reservoir. I might also try it at Chesterfield. Sorry, Mom, but I'm out of rotenone and Tovex.

Your fave kid,
R

Prometheus, Sisyphus, and Icarus all tried. Camus points out that Sisyphus has won over the gods because he keeps on trying, no matter how pointless the battle is.   Prometheus brought fire to mankind, and although punished by the gods for his audacity he still can say, chained to his cliff face, "Screw you! I'm being punished for actually DOING something nice for mankind!" Icarus wasn't punished for flight, he fell because of his own stupidity and vanity -- his hubris, if you will -- and for not paying attention to his father's instructions.

Well yes; but for mortal man to aspire to the heights of Mater Nostra Taurus Caca the Magnificent is surely hubris of the first water. I remind you of the fate of poor Prometheus, of Icarus, of Sisyphus, and all who reach (as Rapaire has often done) beyond their stations.
Caca of man will never be cacciataurii.

...mystifying syntactical lacinae...

I looked, Amos. "Lacina" (Coming from Old French I suppose the plural would be the same as if it were Latin: Lacinae) is a name that today is spelled "Lacey" or some variant thereof which refers to a net-like fabric and is the adjectival form of the noun "lace". I would have used the word "lacunae", meaning gap or missing part, as in the statement "He is self-centered in opinion, with curious lacunae of astounding ignorance." "Lacunae" is the plural of the feminine Latin noun "Lacuna", meaning a hole or gap.

Mom!! Mom!! Guess WHAT???

Gramma sent us an Airport Express she wasn't using anymore, and after enough wrassling I managed to crack the password she forgot and reset and reconfigure it. So now, it has replaced the wee laptop in the living room that drives the stereo system. Now, the Airport Express, added to our local network, picks up my iTunes wirelessly and plays them through the stereo system, at the same time as it is playing them through my own computer speakers. The whole house is listening to Al Grierson. BBW can take over the Airport link and drive it from HER iTunes too. Not only that but because we have configured our iTunes to share each others' libraries I can drive the stereo from my computer to play songs from her library, and she can likewise play songs from my library through the stereo system OR through her computer speakers or both.

What a day!
