Look, people, you are failing to sustain my interest here.

You can do better than this. Way better.

I expect to open this thread tomorrow and see something absolutely fascinating, so get to it. ;-)

I rearranged the furniture in my bedroom this evening. If it were a place that you were familiar with, George, you might be in danger of stubbing your toes if you, er, got up to go in the dark. . . but since you're not familiar with it, dream on.

Interesting enough?

(Setting aside the fact that I am unfamiliar with this arrangement and am in danger of stubbing my own toes. But the last arrangement, set up about a week ago, was so confusing that one night I awoke and as I tried to get oriented scooted off the bed and ended up sitting on top of my cedar chest at the foot of the bed because I couldn't figure out what direction the door was. Rearranging furniture is not something to attempt lightly!)

LED Nightlights Are Your Friend, Mag!!

Little Hawk: why do you pretend to be arrogant, abrasive, rude, crude and insensitive, pushy, obnoxious, and completely below the salt? We know you're not really usually like that.

Is he usually worse or something?

Pat and I once pulled into my in-laws house around 2 a.m. after a long drive there from Ohio. Went straight to bed, me on the left side and her on the right, reversing our places at home. Around 3 had to go, so I got up and walked straight into the wall. Decided I didn't have to go all that badly, turned around and went back to bed.

"Little Hawk: why do you pretend to be arrogant, abrasive, rude, crude and insensitive, pushy, obnoxious, and completely below the salt?"

LOL!!!!

Because it's fun to do that among friends who already know me well...that's why, Amos.

I invented Chongo for the same reason. His brash and aggressive nature is so unlike my own that I find it refreshing in a way...

Stilly, I think this habit that women have of periodically rearranging all the furniture in a room is one of the most perplexing and disturbing foibles of the female gender. It's maddening! Still, they have so many other good points in their favor that I find it fairly easy to overlook that flaw.

You should know, though, that it is a great indoors workout, moving heavy pieces of furniture, and it is an exercise that has been demonstrated to produce lots of beneficial endorphins. And the room looks great. I do have to get one of those plastic vent thingies that redirects the air flow some--the positioning of the bed is unfortunately right under the vent and I hate having the heat or the AC flow directly onto me. I've had the bed on the other side of the room for several years for this very reason. But I've used those plastic (and magnet) thingies before and they do the job. I just have to find one.

"the positioning of the bed is unfortunately right under the vent and I hate having the heat or the AC flow directly onto me."

Me too! And you know why? The air from heating ducts/registers and AC units is chock full of positive ions, and they are extremely depressing to the human system. AC is the worst for that.

Negative ions can be found outdoors, specially on sunny days of high pressure weather, or right after a thunderstorm, or next to a fountain, or by a body of flowing water or by the surf on a large body of water. That's partly why it feels so great to be in those environments.

The indoor air in most buildings is very depleted of negative ions, but especially the air around heating vents and AC units. Shopping malls often have extremely bad air, partly because of all the chemical vapors that are venting off the various new plastics products in the stores.

"Air to die for!" should be their motto.

I worked in such a place (an electronis store in a mall) once for about 5 months, and I was sick from about the 2nd week on the job right through until I finally quit the job! An endless series of lung, throat, and breathing problems. I was beginning to think I had AIDS or something. Well, I quit the job and was perfectly well again within a week of leaving, and I didn't get another such cold or lung infection thereafter for about the next five years, and very seldom ever have since.

It is possible you just didn't much believe in selling electronics in a mall. You are, after all, a sensitive and creative soul, not well suited to the mills of commerce.

True, but it was primarily the air in the place, Amos. Simply no doubt about it. I had to get out of there to realize that. Now I notice immediatly how bad the air is when I enter that mall, and specially the stores that are full of plastics products. Another place that's seriously toxic is the aisle in your supermarket where all the household cleansers are. Go there sometime, stand there, and smell the air. If you can't detect what I'm talking about, then I guess you are either invulnerable or just don't have a working sense of smell.

I understand that exactly, LH. I don't walk down those aisles unless I have to. The ones with cleaners and the ones with plastics. And in the craft store, I can't walk down the aisle with artificial flowers and plants, but I don't know if that is from plastic or dust.

Oh. I'm not saying I don't sense the positive ion bias and the chemical smells. I doubt I'd be comfortable working there either.

In a recent NPR report there was a discussion of the thesis that here is a single gene which activates toxin removal and cleanup, and those who do not have said gene (I forget its number) are highly more disposed to come down with asthma, for example, than those who do, by a significant percent.

Rapaire,

Of course I'm sending a sprouted get-well potato to you in Idaho. What could possibly have more symbolic value to an Idahoan (Idahoian? Idahoite?) Besides, it was homesick. Kept me awake most of the night, sobbing into it's pillow.

It is in the mail.    Hope it doesn't freeze before it gets there.

Maybe I shouldn't have sent it air mail. I understand cargo holds get pretty frosty at high altitudes.

There are actually videos of young idiots allowing themselves to get shot with one of these things. Bet not many of them are stupid enough to do it again. It's pretty clear there are a lot of kids messing with these things that absolutely do not get how dangerous they are. (And probably some older idiots also.)

But there are Other Things, and now that I'm well into adulthood I can buy the parts without question. Stuff like LOX and kerosene, or RFNA, or liquid air and alcohol, or...well, let's just say that I'm awaye of the Potentialities.

Clever editing on the potato cannon, but I don't think hitting the monitor was the most impressive shot. There was a pumpkin in there that was nicely lit from the side that really was the best for a parting shot. In my opinion.

Dear Mom,

Next Saturday and Sunday (and possibly Monday) I won't be around much if at all. Pat and I are taking a mid-Winter holiday. We have reservations for a tour of the Firehole River and for a cabin...oh, I forgot to mention...we're going to Yellowstone again. Our cabin will be within a couple hundred yards of Old Faceful and everything. We'll go in from West Yellowstone by snowcoach, tour by snowcoach, and leave by snowcoach on Monday afternoon.

Yes, I promise to dress warmly and wear my long underwear.

R

All cells have evolved strategies to rapidly adapt to shifts in the environment. Cells detect these changes via stimulant molecules that bind to membrane receptors on their surface, which trigger a cascade of intercellular reactions.

However, because these interactions between external stimulants and receptors are so transient, they are extremely tricky to detect and monitor. Gilad Barnea et al. have engineered a highly sensitive assay for identifying these fleeting events. The authors linked three common receptor types?G protein-coupled receptors, receptor tyrosine kinases, and steroid hormone receptors?to a transcription factor via a tether with a cleavage site for a protease.

When these receptors are activated, a protease releases the transcription factor, which then activates a reporter gene in the nucleus. All the genes used in this system originate from outside the cell. These genes thus provide a unique biochemical pathway that is protected from interference from the cell's own signaling molecules. Barnea et al. exploited this assay to identify chemerin as a ligand for the orphan receptor, GPR1. ? B.T.

Noise in solid-state nanopores
R. M. M. Smeets*, U. F. Keyser*,, N. H. Dekker*, and C. Dekker*,

We study ionic current fluctuations in solid-state nanopores over a wide frequency range and present a complete description of the noise characteristics. At low frequencies (f 100 Hz) we observe 1/f-type of noise.

We analyze this low-frequency noise at different salt concentrations and find that the noise power remarkably scales linearly with the inverse number of charge carriers, in agreement with Hooge's relation. We find a Hooge parameter = (1.1 ± 0.1) x 10?4. In the high-frequency regime (f 1 kHz), we can model the increase in current power spectral density with frequency through a calculation of the Johnson noise.

Finally, we use these results to compute the signal-to-noise ratio for DNA translocation for different salt concentrations and nanopore diameters, yielding the parameters for optimal detection efficiency

I am afraid I find this hard to believe.

Why bother MOM with it then? Are you trying to one-up Rapaire? Don't worry about it--he'll freeze his butt off down there at Yellowstone. I thought you'd be coming up with alternative venues for him to consider. A hotel in Coronado or a visit to Mission Beach, perhaps? A dip at Scripps would be nice.

Of course Rapaire is welcome to come down to Scripps and sunbathe on the beach. It would do him a world of good. And I bet Pat would like it more than getting doused by Old Faithful...

Amos, nude bathing is permissible in Yellowstone in the winter -- in fact, you can do it all year 'round. Some of those hot pots will not only remove your clothing, but your skin, body fat, internal organs and all. If you drop your wallet or cell phone in it's best just to let it be.

(I'm not making this up, you know. Pop into some of the hot pots or fumurules and in three or four days you'll be a skim of grease.)
