As long as San Diego has better weather than Idaho in January, it can snow in autumn if it wants to.

Never fear, a side by side comparison is almost guaranteed to show Idaho up--depending on whoich way one holds the map.

I have communed with with my gramps and other forefathers as well as seeking the sage advice of some of my still living Native Peoples brothers (well, I saw Jim One Feather and his bro at the beer store yesterday) regarding the sudden onset of fall.

I had predicted the last four years of seasonal weather here almost to a tee and I also predicted, three months ago, an early, but long and dry fall this year with early snowfall but moderate snow until close to the winter equalknocks. Then, Mom Nature is gonna knock us good here in The Merrytimes with a rather nasty winter.

Or not. Depends eh?

As for the glow at dusk, it is dusk now and I only have a slight glow on. But, there is a beautiful reddish pink glow to the west as the sun illuminates the undeside of the cloud cover... or maybe that's a reflection off of A and/or Rap.

But see, his Brilliantness drank himself to death. How cool was that? Not very.

Dylan Thomas drank way too much, but there is speculation that it was some kind of mis-matched drug cocktail between what he was taking and what his doctors gave him that killed him. Here is a site called "Neurotic Poets" that offers one version.

I didn't realize John Berryman was with him.

I agree with Dylan Thomas about changing the color of the lampshades. It really makes me angry.

As DT wrote, "Rage, rage, against the dyeing of the light."

Reminds me of the old ditty used to sell a poets books:

No one says "lovin'"
Like someone from Llangollen
And Dylan Thomas
Says it best.

Ah, Rap, it is good to hear his virtues being extolled; but I fear me you may have misheard his words, or left your dictionary at home.

It was another distinguished poet who inspired him in that work, with

Little lamp, who made thee?
Little lamp, who made thee?

That's right, along with his other inspiring poem that begins:

Taper, taper, burning bright
In the hallways of the night . . .

Today's word, in association with the commanding Oxford English Dictionary, is

mifky-pifky (n.)

Sexual activity, flirting (esp. of an illicit nature).

Used in a sentence in 1985 by J. Margolis:

"There's all this mifky-pifky going on, but not for me, and I'm envious."

Earlier, Johnny Dunne gave the inspiration to Billy Blake:

No man is an candle, entire of itself; every man is a piece of the wick, a part of the wax. If a wick be burnt out by silly usage, the world is the darker, as well as if a searchlight were, as well as if a ligthouse of thy friend's or of thine own were. Any man's taper diminishes my light, because I am brighter than everybody else; and therefore must go about blowing out candles and tapers and dashing buckets of water upon fires so that my light will shine the brighter. Never send to know for whom the light went out; it was quenched for me.

Your sesquipedalian tirades, Amos, are evidence of a mind careening uncontrolled through a labyrinth of quasi-intellectual sludgewallow that resembles nothing more than the entrails of a goat scattered randomly upon a verdant sward.

Why would Mom want to hide these lights under a bushel?

And why does Rapaire insist on referring to people by their first names whom he has never met, and to whom he has not been introduced?? Talk about blathertwaddle!!

Ode to a Flashlight

LED torch, burning bright
In the forests of the night,
What immortal eye, or hand
Made the form, or named the brand?

In what distant fab or shop
Turned he out thy screw-on top?
From what ancient Mandarin
Did he import thy body thin?

And what shoulder and what art
made the chip within thy heart?
And, when thy heart was made by day,
What night-shift ran thy QA?

What the hammer? what the chain?
And thy blueprint, from what brain?
Whence the copper? From what sea
Silicon for thy main IC?

When the stars threw down their spears,
And watered heaven with their tears,
Did the Maker then foresee
Who would make an LED??

LED torch, burning bright
In the forests of the night,
What immortal eye, or hand
Made the form, or named the brand?

Last Sunday it would have been "Arrghance, Matey!" Last Sunday was Talk Like A Pirate Day. It's too late now, you'll have to wait for next year.

I went fishing today. At Medicare Beach, not Cardiac Arrest Beach as I did before. Lost TWO good sized trout; both snapped my good ol' line (one took my good ol' bait rig and the other my good ol' Rapalla sinking lure). I suppose that was to be expected after 23 years of use, though. Good thing I have more line, eh?

Finally I just gave up, listened to my audiobook, and watched the grebes, pelicans, gulls, and a red-headed duck as I sat in my fishing chair close to the water's edge.

The good ol' wind also carried off my good ol' straw hat -- fortunately the OLD one with the holes in it (Eiseley isn't THAT good of a shot). Last seen it was sailing towards American Falls dam.

I've been reading The Ionian Mission by Patrick O'Brian and discovered this erudite, apt, and even aurgurous passage:

"The Navy is the life for me," said Martin again, "Quite apart from the excellent company?and I may say that as far as I have seen, the ordinary sailormen are quite as obliging as the officers."

"I have certainly found it so, in many cases, Aft the more honor, forward the better man, as Lord Nelson put it," said Stephen. "Aft being the officers and young gentlemen, forward the hands?the container for the contents, you understand. Yet I think that by forward we are to take him to mean real sailors; for you are to observe that in a crew such as this a great many scrovies are necessarily swept in, froward dirty disreputable rough good-for-nothing disorderly ragabashes and raparees to begin with, and sometimes forever.

Oh, EIseley!! How CHERCE!! How POIFECT!! :D

Mom: Last night I stood on a stage with Christine Lavin and sang a bit part in the background chorus for hner performance of "Sensitive New Age Guys".    I mean, she was right there, and I coulda touched her and everything, and he glasses were slipping down her well-formed nose and she plays really good guitar, and I woulda gotten fresh but we're both too old for all that and besides her brother was standing right next to me.

It was a loverly evening. BBW smuggled her a note asking her to play "The Kind of Love You Never Recover From" and by gawd, she did. It is as far as I am concerned the best song she ever wrote, and one I have done for years. BBW says she likes my version better. A foine compliment, no mistake.

Things I did not know about Christine Lavin: She used to work at a lot of funny odd jobs. She is a WHIZ baton twirler. She once had (well her sister did) a guinea pig which bit Joe Namath on the finger.

And she is a great showperson. A loverly evening. Ya just gotta laugh and laugh.

Tom Paxton comes to San Diego later this year.

In her telling of it, the young sister hid under the bed in tears and terror almost all the day, fearing her guinea pig would be promptly taken off and put to a sorry death for having endangered one finger on Joe Namath's million-dollar hands.

In the actual event nothing happened. I suppose the finger healed shortly and he went on to play more football.

Another little-known fact: Joe Namath taught Christine Lavin how to throw a forward pass.
