Well, Fl. Ted's head will never explode.

Crude numerical interloper with a shallow sense of BS.

I feel compelled to complain. Flamenco ted has been darting around trying to capture the "00" posts at mudcat while contributing nothing materially to those threads. It's insulting to those of us who have done all of the heavy lifting to have this sneak sit on the sidelines and only visit when he can get some inane form of glory in a competition unrelated to the high quality BS that is performed here.

Sod off, FT, unless you have something to contribute.

IMHO.

You may as well go stand upon the beach,
And bid the main flood bate his usual height;
You may as well use question with the wolf,
Why he hath made the ewe bleat for the lamb;
You may as well forbid the mountain pines
To wag their high tops, and to make no noise
When they are fretted with the gusts of heaven;
You may as well do anything most hard,
As seek to soften that?than which what's harder??
His Flamenco head: therefore, I do beseech you,
Make no more quibbles, use no further means;
But with all brief and plain conveniency,
Let us have BS plentiful and deep.

Complain away you muppet!! You old Yank pensioners simply aren't fast enough to bag the milestone posts yourselves! See you at 5700, this thread takes way too long to load up for me to perservere with it!

And now...an announcement.

Whereas the coming weekend will, for me, be one of three days, honoring the late Martin Luther King on Monday, and,

Whereas my wife and I intend to journey on Saturday to Salt Lake City to look around and see what's there, and,

Whereas on Saturday THE CHIEFTAINS are playing in concert with the Salt Lake Philharmonic,

THEREFORE

You know where my wife and I will be at 8 p.m. Saturday night (even though the tickets are expen$ive).

Well, they played on the cheap for many years out of necessity before they became renowned; so it is only fair.

FT, you are a hollow-headed braggart, and coxcomb void of merit. I bite my thumb at you. You are confusing meretricious rapaciousness for agility; and they are more different than the sun and the moon.

Go to, you fox-fart.

Actually, the total came to $99.00. When my wife called and told me the tix were about $98.00 I thought she meant each. I still wouldn't have cared. It'll be worth every dime.

I am not often in the position of being able to pay for expensive tickets to anything, but received a birthday gift back in 1978 when I lived in New York City. Dad said not to use it to pay any bills or buy a lifetime supply of subway tokens. I was to do something I wouldn't otherwise be able to afford. So I bought a ticket to the gala performance of The Bartered Bride at the Metropolitan Opera. It was marvelous! $65 was a lot of money (for me, anyway!) to spend on a ticket. I sat in the Grand Tier (the first balcony above the stage).

While I'm at it, here's a bit more of the story: My roommate, Kris, decided to go with me, and she was able to get a ticket up next to god for about $15. Nearly got a nosebleed up there, she said. . . Anyway, we got as dressed up as two college kids with summer jobs could manage, and headed to the Met. We walked in, Kris in her cute little suit, I in a blouse and full-length kilt. Which I had to hike up a little when walking on stairs.

We started up toward our seats when the time was right, and as we moved up the first flight of stairs, I paused to adjust the kilt so I wouldn't step on it. Kris, not paying attention, walked into me, and I ran into the elderly man on the stairs in front of me. At that exact moment the entire lobby and mezzanine broke into applause. I turned and looked downstairs to see who they were applauding for, but everyone there was looking up. So I looked up the stairs and the balconies, only everyone was looking down. So I looked at the old man in front of me and turned as red as my kilt.

I was able to call home and tell my mother "Guess who I ran into at the opera the other day? Rudolph Bing!"

[blush]

In some quarters they say "I ran onto Rudolph last week!" Sounds a little closer to the situation in this case! :D Great story.

Title:
        Conformal (super)gravities with several gravitons
Authors:

Journal:
        eprint arXiv:hep-th/0201023
Publication Date:

Abstract
We construct consistent interacting gauge theories for M conformal massless spin-2 fields ("Weyl gravitons") with the following properties: (i) in the free limit, each field fulfills the equation ${\cal B}^{\mu \nu} = 0$, where ${\cal B}^{\mu \nu}$ is the linearized Bach tensor, (ii) the interactions contain no more than four derivatives, just as the free action and (iii) the internal metric for the Weyl gravitons is not positive definite. The interacting theories are obtained by gauging appropriate non-semi-simple extensions of the conformal algebra $so(4,2)$ with commutative, associative algebras of dimension M. By writing the action in terms of squares of supercurvatures, supersymmetrization is immediate and leads to consistent conformal supergravities with M interacting gravitons.

Rappaire, I'll take your word for it. :)

SRS, as a blind person, I've had the pleasure of running into some interesting folk. :) One was a favorite author at a science-fiction convention, who offered me a guide before I was in danger of doing just that.

Teresa, do you use the accessibility options on your computer to audibly read this thread? Has this entire thing been read outloud? (Have you been arrested because of it?) I'm sure some of the stuff we dish out here is probably illegal in several English-speaking nations around the world, but we read quietly so others don't know what we're up to. Little Hawk's lips move when he reads, so he can't log on in to visit Mudcat in Science Fiction venues where HAL might see what he's saying, but that's another thread. . .

(I watched that one recently with my kids)

I was going to make up a story about being in prison, but ... heck wid it.

The subject matter is heavy already. :)

Indeed, I use a screen-reader to convert text to speech, and also use a Braille display that shows 40 characters at a time.

Did you see that? She likes Star Trek. Little Hawk is gonna have the Shat-man over here in a flash testing Teresa's literary Star Trek credentials.

(Teresa, do you read Ursula LeGuin and Octavia Butler?)

Please do consider crafting the story of imprisonment based on trumped up Mudcat Charges. Please include Ashcroft as a major character. It could really rev up the imagination of all of these librarians and philosophers, trying to librate you. :)

After what Ashcroft did to Teresa I think the entire Mudcat ahould offer her shelter and succour.

Stavros the reason I don't explain the interacting gravitons thing is that I don't understand it well enough to do so. My question (Do you know what this means....) was literal, because I dodn't know.

I don't think Rapaire knows either, even though he answered "Yes". I think that was the most pretentious monosyllable ever uttered.

The octonions are the largest of the four normed division algebras. While somewhat neglected due to their nonassociativity, they stand at the crossroads of many interesting fields of mathematics. Here we describe them and their relation to Clifford algebras and spinors, Bott periodicity, projective and Lorentzian geometry, Jordan algebras, and the exceptional Lie groups. We also touch upon their applications in quantum logic, special relativity and supersymmetry.

Ok, oh well, so much for my illusion of being "on the outside".

Yes, thanks to the Internet, which Asscraft ... er, (sp?) has so far not succeeded in limiting (too much) I do read Ursula LeGuin. She's one of my favorites, as a matter of fact; I think I may have made a small reference to her in this or maybe the "Somebody has to be last" thread. I may have read a few of Octavia Butler's stories, but that's another idea for my reading list. :)

Oh, how I love to tease LH about Shatner and that scottish poet (not Rabbie; the other one). ;);)

I should be sending my book list to Asscraft before he bans them all. Oh, woe is me. Hurry up, Internet; increase your electronic offerings, before I perish from lack of brain-food.

Rapaire is guilty of multi-tiered treachery. You see, on the surface he is a staunch American, lover of books, guns, BS, long fuzzy words and long, sloppy kisses on a summer night. But if you look deeper, while a librarian would seek to help understanding with appropriate guidance and clarifications, you will notice that Rapaire has just answered one obfuscation of his with yet another, piled higher and deeper. When he says he is working on his PHD., this is the kind of PhD he means -- piled higher and deeper, reducing uynderstanding to a state of numbed and reeling misinformation.

But that is not all!! This treacherous inner layer of deceptions would not make any sense, unless one took the final piece of the puzzle into account and realized, since he is not who he SEEMS to be, who he must actually be working for.

I'll tekll you who he is working for -- he is working for the most degenerate, non-associative, counter-Bottian, non-Lorenzian alien, anti-democratic and anti-Christian numeric entities ever seen on planet earth.

Rapaire is working for the OCTONIONS!! Those eight-eyed, multi-skinned, acrid-smelling non-associative aliens!! The ones that assault little kids with their liver dinners and ruin perfectly good hamburgers. THOSE octonions.

This is ugly, deep and dark.

But, I have promises to park,

And miles to go before I snark.

Everyone is obsessed with this algebra nonsense! It is a highly overrated urban myth and should be discarded in favor of almatra. I am much more at ease figuring out problems using only yarn, marbles and pompoms. It is so simple!!

Fundamentals of Al'Mat

Al'Mat consists of sets of marbles and sets of pompoms. There are various rules called operations that govern Al'Mat. An operation is closed if the resulting sets are the same type of item the starting sets. An identity for an operation is that set which has no effect on the starting set under that operation.

The empty set, represented by an empty yarn circle, contains neither marbles nor pompoms. The empty set is neither marble nor pompom!!!

HAW!! You see?? Does anyone else see the perfect simplicity and zen-ness in this system?? "It is neither marble nor pompom!!"

Sets, sets, sets -- is that all you people can think of? I'm sick and tired of the glorification of sets in this so-called "culture"! Sets is a wonderful think that should be done by married people in private. There is too much pre-marital sets these days. Equations are created out of wedlock. Kids are out of control because of the sets-obsessed media. What ever happened to morals and values and the American Family?

It's quiet now that Rapaire has headed down to ancient Lake Bonneville and it's tiny remnant, the Great Salt Lake. I looked up the Chieftains--they're coming to Fort Worth also (on 1/24)--sounds like he got a good price on the tickets. The good tickets here go for $100 a pop. The cheap seats are around $40 each.

I'm glad I got to see the Chieftains in Berkeley when I lived there. I saw them fifteen years ago, and it was $40 even then.

Ah, I got an evening pass out of prison, and went to a science-fiction event. We watched the pilot for "Battlestar Galactica". The bus trip to the cafe was adventurous (took me an hour and a half). The cafe had satellite programming and we watched it on the "Sci-fi" channel.    'twasn't my cup of tea, but being with friends was nice. :) I'd been in the house too long. :D

Rise up, rise up, oh, Mother, dear
Rise up to the top of the list
For it is not meet that one so dear
Should fall off the bottom like this, like this
Should fall off the bottom like this.

Rise up, rise up, oh, Mother dear
Rise up to the top of the heap.
For we'll ne'er let it be said
While e'er we have breath
That mother on the floor did sleep, did sleep
That mother on the floor did sleep.

So she rose up, and she rose high
Straight to the list's first place
And all the world
Saw the MOAB anew

With the sun upon her face.
