It would depend. Actually, one should check with the College of Heralds, both in England and Scotland. I shall do so when I have time, perhaps later today.

Another meaning for Digitalis Itermediaris is: "One who causes another to have a heart attack."

Two down, one to go!

Eiseley

Brava, brava, Katherine Eiseley!
You are turning out preciseley
As your friends all knew you could
And your parents hoped you would!

He has no friends to help him now. Perhaps he'll die upon that train.

Well, it's kinda like this. I know where Eiseley lives, and she's well up the hill from the railroad. And the river, for that matter. Actually, her house is near the Legion Hovel. Not that she has much truck with THOSE sorts, her being a sober, prim, and upstanding lady of the community and all. Why, once a couple of the Legionaires were draped on her front fence, drinking some sort of rotgut and capping Shakespeare lines for the next drink. One of them couldn't identify the play, act and scene of a quote and was getting all hot and bothered about it. Eiseley opened her upstairs window and yelled, "It's two a.m., the quote is from Kemp's 'Nine Daies Wonder' and not Shakespeare, and you two be off or I'll sic the dog on you!"

Eiseley doesn't have a dog.

Why would she want a dachshund when she has three sons? They are named biblically: Genesis, Exodus, and Leviticus. Their nicknames are Sis, Dus, and Cus.

Eiseley, back to the grindstone, please! We want to to pass that Capstone test and come down here to GRADUATE.

I'm astonished at the 2,222nd wind that seems to be blowing around here with the Next Big Number.

If you have to ask why she would want a Dachshund, my dear fellow, there would be no use in telling you.

Well done, Sibs.

Waiting out the night in a cheap hotel in Asheville to attend an OCD workshop tomorrow.

It is a good experience, being reminded why I have not owned a television in 30 years. (I left my book on the kitchen counter this morning.)

If I wanted to spend an extra $10 dollars I could have my dachshund with me, if I had a dachsund.

Right on, Janie. I've never owned a television, though I've had to put up with them now and then, due to being in the company of people who did for various periods of time. And I detest the bloody things.

As for that woman in the video, she's got some kind of problem with her left eye. Watch the video for a bit, and you'll see what I mean. Really quite odd.

Matter of fact, her eyes seem a bit strange altogether, although she talks quite intelligently. Maybe she's one of those lizard people? ;-)

Well, dogs are essentially mainly carnivores...you can tell that by looking at their teeth. Human beings aren't. They absolutely aren't. You can tell that by looking at their teeth. Human beings have teeth that are clearly designed by Nature to chop and crush vegetation and fruits, not inflict puncture wounds and rip out the throat or abdomen of their prey.

(some) People in ancient times got into eating meat in a big way because they were clever enough to learn how to use handheld weapons, thus making themselves very capable carnivores, and it was a quick, handy, exciting way of securing a lot of food fast...whereas growing plants and picking berries, etc. is a slow and not very exciting business.

Those people were also very good at killing OTHER people, so it's not surprising that meat-eating humans began to make their influence very strongly felt in primitive times. Meat-eating is basically the lifestyle of killers, because it always involves killing...either directly or by proxy.

Some human societies began to associate the eating of a lot of meat with being rich and successful...thus it became the ideal of all the poor people to live a life where they got to eat meat every day, and the more meat the better! That led to the North American lifestyle, where people now eat so goddamn much more meat than they need or that their bodies can handle that they are dying at record rates from heart disease and other degenerative ailments caused by their meat, sugar, and starch-centered diet. Plus, there's an epidemic of obesity, mostly due to that cruddy diet...and lack of exercise.

If she's a Vegan, she's living more naturally and healthfully than most people in this culture do.

p.s. I'm not a Vegan. I still eat more meat than I probably should, because I'm basically lazy, I'm accustomed to doing so, and it's convenient to do so. I am a product of the culture I was born in...but I'm very aware of it too, and of various possible alternatives.

Except that humans, like chimps, bonobos, and pigs have pointed "canine" teeth. Also, like the pig, the human digestive tract has evolved to handle meat, fruit and vegetation -- instead of only vegetation like the ruminants, horses, deer, and so forth. Nature made humans (and pigs) omnivores.

'Tis thought by many (most?) who think on these things that humans were scavengers, eating what was available: berries, roots, dead animals, fruits, etc. This is called "evolutionary adaptation" because it increases the ability of an organism to survive since it is not dependent upon, say, grasses that die off in a prolonged cold spell.

That is not to say that humans shouldn't cut down on their carnivorous diet. But we're built to eat 'most anything that comes our way, and in the past (and the present and perhaps again in the future) we have.

You're corrent, Rapaire. Dogs are also omnivores, and they will eat almost anything that they come across, although not some of the fruits, like citrus. But my point was that humans have teeth which indicates that their main diet should consist of plants, while dogs have teeth that indicate that their main diet should consist of animals.

A dog's teeth are intended to pierce and tear flesh of its prey...but they can be used to eat other foods. A human's teeth are intended to chop and grind plants and fruits, etc....but they can be used to eat other foods.

The difference between a mainly carniverous omnivore's teeth and a human's teeth are dramatic and obvious. The dog's teeth come to sharp points, particularly noticeable in a puppy, a bit less sharp as the dog grows older. A human's teeth do not come to sharp points, although they do possess a single set of small, dull canine teeth. I think it's pretty clear what Nature intended those vestigial canine teeth for: they are there for a last ditch defense, assuming the human gets attacked by a true carnivore, a creature which will be armed with many sharp teeth, not just one set of small and not very formidable canines.

I'm not saying humans shouldn't eat any meat. I'm saying they they have fallen into cultural patterns where they're eating far more of it than is good for their health...or their digestive tract.

They do it because it's fun, it tastes good, they associate it with affluence and success, it's convenient, and they're used to doing it.

Oh, certainly. That's also why Americans eat (or ate) so much white bread. All I'm saying is that humans evolved to eat whatever they came across that didn't eat them first -- including each other.

By the way, the Arctic Peoples survived fat and healthy on a diet that was nearly ALL meat for some 10,000 years or thereabouts. Of course, they barely cooked their meat and thereby preserved the vitamins, etc. that were in it. The 19th Century Arctic explorers cooked the bejesus out of their meat and came down with roaring scurvy (among other things, of course). Coupled with ignorance, stupidity, pride, and lead-sealed food tins it killed off the Franklin Expedition. Those who will not learn from the natives....

Good point about the Arctic peoples. I've been studying Taoist and traditional Chinese medicine for many years, and they talk a lot about diet. They say that if you live in a very cold climate, then you DO need to eat a diet heavy in fatty meats in order to combat the cold effectively. That's because cold is strong Yin energy (water and anything that cools) and meats (specially red meat) are full of strong Yang energy (fire and things that cause warmth).

Naturally the Inuit and far northern people had to eat a diet heavy in meat, regardless of the fact that they are the descendants of beings that once probably developed in much warmer parts of the world, had the dentition to indicate that, and began by eating mostly fruits and vegetables that they scavenged, plus a little meat in all probability (rather as modern apes do in the wild). The fact that the Inuit were in a very cold climate went along perfectly with the food available....fish and game.

The food in a given climatic area is usually the perfect food FOR people in that climatic area. That's how nature functions, providing what suits the climate best. In the tropics, for example, fruit abounds, and it's well suited to meet people's dietary needs in that climate, but it would not be well suited to keep Inuit going in the depth of winter.

I would think that the more you are exposed to really cold outdoor weather, the more meat you need to stay strong and healthy.

It was a good and useful workshop, MOM, and worth the time, money, motel room and long drive to gain some useful knowledge and ideas to bring to the table in my work with people with OCD.

At the same time, I was struck, as I often am at these workshops with the "Big Names," by their ambition, narcissism, and singleness of focus that leads them to exclude from their own practice, because it would complicate their research and perhaps adversely effect (affect?) their positive outcome data. This particular fellow is the one of the biggest, and perhaps the biggest, guru in the treatment of anxiety disorders in North America, and has been for the past 25 years. He invited any of us with questions to approach him after the workshop, which I did, in reference to a client I have been working with for a number of years who has both a psychotic disorder and OCD. The diagnoses are distinct in this instance, but as is often the case for people who have both diagnoses, the cognitive distortions that lead to or perpetuate the OCD symptoms are readily incorporated into the psychotic frames of reference of that support the internal logic of delusions and auditory hallucinations. There is little, if any, debate these days that OCD and psychotic disorders are biologically, i.e. genetically based, and comorbidity is very common.   I run into these issues of comorbidity constantly, and have throughout the years of my practice.

This "guru," however, in response to my query, said he didn't know, and could not offer anything because he has never treated anyone who experiences both psychosis and obsessions and/or compulsions!

Don't know why I ended the previous sentence with an exclamation point. I've had enough experience that I ought not be surprised.

As Bob Dylan once said, Janie..."If you want somebody you can trust...trust yourself!"

However, at least the guy was honest enough to say "I don't know." He could have instead extemporized some brilliant-sounding stuff off the top of his head, couldn't he? ;-) And many would.

The world "guru" gets used a lot when referring to experts of some sort. I find it a bit odd. What the word "guru" actually means in Sanskrit is "a light that shines in the darkness". That light is simply the light of dawning awareness. Awareness brings in light where there was only darkness.

People think of the guru as a person who leads other people, because of the tradition in India of students gathering around a spiritual teacher and forming a community which that teacher serves to lead. It's a long tradition. What most people fail to realize is that the true guru is inside YOU, not outside you. It's your own latent ability to achieve an expanded awareness, and it's in you in every moment of your existence, waiting to be progressively awoken. It can be awoken by...

quieting the mind
observing the body very carefully
feeling and observing your emotions and other feelings
not judging them, simply quietly observing them
witnessing them
after awhile they move on, and something else arises

That's one way.

It can also be awoken by...

Not judging others.
Accepting the present moment instead of resisting it.
Acting when action is required, instead of remaing passive due to fear.
Applying yourself to things instead of procrastinating.
Showing self-discipline and pursuing good health.
Excercising the body and mind in useful ways.
Loving life instead of resisting it.

And so on....

At any rate, the true guru is NOT another person. It's the highest possibility of consciousness inside you. A really good spiritual teacher, like a good scholastic teacher, simply inspires you to reach inside yourself and find what you always had...and bring it forth.

You are the light that shines in your own darkness. You are the Guru.

Yup. If God is both infinite and omnipresent (and many traditions assert such a concept)...then everyone is God, whether they know it or not (they usually don't). And everything is God. Even the squirrel on the branch and the cloud in the sky are God. And inside you is God.

Therefore "Seek ye the Kingdom of Heaven which is within."

That is the essence of both esoteric Christianity and all the Eastern religions. The Kingdom of Heaven spoken of in that passage is clearly a state of consciousness, and it is that state of consciousness which is the Guru as well.

The mind likes to divide things up and put one thing apart from another. Thus people who insist on approaching the matter ONLY through their chattering mind will also insist on having an idea of a "God" separate from themselves. They want a God that's "over there" somewhere at a distance, so they can pray to Him (or Her)...complain to Him or Her...petition Him or Her...even blame Him or Her for the lousy time they're having! ;-) Or they can deny the existence of that separate being, because there's no "evidence" for it! Hilarious. How do you deny the existence of consciousness itself when you have barely gone beyond the most superficial levels of your own consciousness?

I'd call that the Kindergarten level of conceptualizing God...but it's far more common than the recognition that what you seek lies within...within yourself...and it is a heightened level of consciousness.

Allright, here I am. Two reasons. One, Stilly River Sage expressed concern as to whether I might or might not post here soon...and the first thing I learned as a cadet at Starfleet Academy was this: Always be attentive to women!

Second reason. I really must ask you people to stop bombarding me with pleadings emails, snail mail, facebook messages, hurled notes tied to bricks, and other such frantic missives. I am not going to promise that I will post the 40,000th post on this thread.

Why would I make such a promise? And if I did make it, how could I guarantee to keep it? It's quite apparent to me that there are a few individuals here...at least 2 or 3 of them...who are hellbent on posting the 40,000th post on this thread to prove to themselves...against all evidence to the contrary...that they have a life...and that their presence here is of considerable importance. They are already jockeying amongst themselves like men aiming to make off with the same lovely damsel, intent on snaring the 40,000th post and snatching it out from under the very noses of their comrades.

It's droll. I used to watch Klingons engage in such puerile competitions, only those usually ended in blood and severing of numerous body parts.

Why would I devote any of my own time to competing with these sorry little people? What would it gain me? Nothing.

So don't bet on me appearing here with the 40,000th post. Not too likely. Not unless you like betting against really long odds...and you feel lucky. ;-)
