Since there seems to be little hope of Mr Shatner gracing us with the 40,000th post, I am getting in touch with Angelina Jolie instead. Keep your fingers crossed.

Why not just have Winona Ryder appear instead?

Maybe she won't return his calls?

BTW if you ever get a chance to hear the BRUBECK BROTHERS Quartet, don't miss it. They are just amazing.

Funny, it didn't even occur to me to call up Winona. I guess it's because I really don't want to impose on her.

Not at all. I don't like to impose on anyone. I prefer the idea to be 100% mutual.

Using my Librarian Instincts and Abilities, I was able to ferret out this small excerpt from a forthcoming book by Someone Well Know To Mom:

"Dear, where's that stuff we put in the dishwasher to keep spots off the glasses? The dispenser is empty."

"It's in the back -- beyond the Cascade."

A book full of danger, thrills, love, laughter, philosophical mutterings, kraken, pirates, and all sort of exciting stuff.

So it's not a novel full of hand-wringing, it is full of dish towel-wringing?

Amos, please stay away from the beach today so you don't get swept away by the tsunami.

EIseley has volunteered as the Designated Reader, so the rest of you can continue drinking. But Eiseley, I am not in Oregon, and I don't think we'll see much impact. I may swing by the cove to see how high it has gotten this afternoon.

Walk right out to the edge of the beach, Amos, to get a really gooood look. ;-) That's what I always do when there are tsunami warnings issued.

A kayaker took advantage of one of the fast inflows of water generated by the Tsunami as he cruised into Quivira basin in Mission Bay as a lifeguard boat looked on.

Ben Schlabs, from San Dimas, watched for the Tsunami while laying on his back in the sand at Mission Beach.

San Diego City Lifeguard Lt. Andy Lerum video recorded the slow rise and fall of the water in the Mission Bay Channel from atop the lifeguard control tower in Mission Bay.

Dozens of people stood on the shoreline and milled about on the boardwalk in Mission Beach at 8:45am on Friday, hoping to see Tsunami waves.

The tsunami generated by an 8.9 earthquake off Japan on Friday briefly produced 1.1' waves at the Scripps Pier in La Jolla, says the Scripps Institution of Oceanography. The wave heights were recorded at 8:50 a.m. on a gauge at the end of the pier.

Earlier, scientists said the tsunami could produce waves up to 2.3' in La Jolla, 2.2' in northern Imperial Beach, and 1' at San Diego's Navy Pier, inside the bay.

Next door the computer is dead! Long live the computer! The Dell is kaput, and after I showed my neighbor where the hard drive is ("take it out of there, please") she put the case in the garage to go out to Goodwill or someplace. The new Lenovo (I prefer HP, but the Lenovo was a little cheaper and it was her money) is finally up, after we struggled through the blutooth settings on the mouse and keyboard, and I put her data back in after updating it and such. Several hours spent, but she now has a very nice all in one touchscreen and should have many hours of lovely browsing. It's so fast compared to the old one - that is what will hit her first.

She has a 1Tb computer and I put in 1 CD (700meg) of data that she accumulated from the last 9 years on the Dell. Talk about overkill!

MOM's form of browsing is perusing the books in the front room, but that's fine. There are days when I much prefer pages that don't involve popups.

Put little images on springs and place them amongst the books on the shelves -- better still, have someone else do it. The springs are compressed by the book, so when you take it out, voila! A pop-up (or -out)!

Come to think of it, this is a way libraries could supplement their budgets - by selling advertising space on pop-outs. The advertising could even be market oriented: restaurants and food stores in among the cookbooks (DDC 641.5), antique stores in the 700s, then there's the untapped market in 612.6....

That's a fabulous idea, though the ads with coupons would have to be quite durable. Some of our books don't leave the shelves for decades at a time. We're in the process of an inventory right now, that will be finished by the end of the fiscal year. So far they've found 3,000 books that didn't have barcodes. This is after an extensive effort about 10 years ago to barcode every book, and all new books are bar coded as they are received.

The inventory statistics are pretty interesting, and when you think about it, the prospect of having someone physically examine each of our 1.2 million books over the course of a year (and the collection folks act on everything we find) we're pacing ourselves and taking turns by department. This month is Admin's turn to do a bunch of books in the liberal arts area.

I, for one, shall avoid 40k as I wouldn't want anyone to think that a Johnny Come Lately would be so rude as to waltz in and steal it away from those more "deserving". Now, mind you, there are 'Catters out there who have never even posted herewithin that will be eying 40k as is their ilk so I expect youse guys to be on top of this for your own sakes.

Which is a shame. Don't know what I'll tell dear old Nancy when I see her again.

VIII:

I grabbed a line in the freezing wind
And held with all my might;
The loyal dogs dug in their paws
And pulled like loyal mates.
And when I could see once more, I saw
I was thirty-nine and eight.
And still the wind!
And still the ice!
And the weight of that frozen sleigh;
But I turned my hand to the helm once more
And mushed, for the next of Kay.

IX:

I guess it was the follerin' mornin'
That old Rapp lost his mind
We'd one hundred twenty posts to make
And miles of ice behind.

It was hard to tell, in that hurtlin' wind
We was all of us snow-blinded
When we asked Raparre to take the lead
And no-one thought he minded.

He moved his rig ahead of us
All careful, fair and nice,
An' cracked his bull-whip over the dogs
And headed down the ice.

We heard him over the howlin' wind,
Yelling "Koo!! Calloo! Callay!!"
An' were hard put keeping sight of him
On the trail to the next of Kay.

XI:

THree ninety-nine and twenty
Our back trail dark had stained
With only eighty more to go
Through wind, and ice, and pain.

The dogs were thin, and working slow
Their eyes rolled bloody white
And we'd lost all sight of Rapparee
Gone ahead in that frozen night.

Our hearts were failing in the cold
And the icy went bit deep
But a power moved us to mush on
For the vow we had to keep.

So we plunged along that pitch-black trail
Toward the frozen edge of day
And the thrumming thought in all our minds
Was "MUSH!!! For the next of Kay!"

We veered to the east from that frozen shore
And climbed an ice-black hill
ANd the bitter face of that frozen place
Climbed hard, and it climbs there still.
But the lead dog smelled a smell of hope
And the thought of a trace of the sun
And he found a gap in between the rocks
And over the lip, he run.

And the other dogs, all tied to the trace
They follered like night does day
And along come Rapp, and Still, an' me
And two-thirds of a broken sleigh.
So we follered that dog down a broken vale
Where shattered rocks did lay
And frozen things where the ice cold winds
Cry "Never another Kay!"

Fer what could we do but foller the hound
Who took the bot in his jaw
And he led us astray on an unmarked way
To the home of the willwaw
And over a crest where ther eis no East
And the frozen wind is born
Past the peak of the star, where the wild things are
The sky showed a thin streak of morn.

AT 39 nine ninety five
A thin blue line was seen
Where the edge of ice meets the top of the night
And the frozen world finds dreams.
And the dogs began to sniff and howl
And gallop on their way.
Though their paws were bleeding, on they ran
On the scent of the next of Kay.

And we joggled and rocked behind
There was no call to holler "Mush"
They had one thing on their mind!
And the racket of broken runners scream
And the wild crew's loud hooray
Gave a sign that soon, on that frozen dawn
We'd be there at the next of Kay.

ANd the broken sleighs gave up their ghost
And the frames and the traces died
And we lay in the snow full of shame and woe
While the 40th Kay went by
And we staggered home to a fire warm
And stood by its flames with a limp
For the glorious day of the 40th K
Had been stole by a fleabitten chimp.
