I've done a search for Uncle Harold, Mom's elder brother. He seems to have vanished! Well, I mean, his thread has. This is quite disturbing. However, I did predict that his would be only a brief moment of recognition...and it turns out I was right. Yes, once again my omnipotent powers of prediction have proven to be 100% correct. Uncle Harold had a very brief moment in the sun, as it were, and he has now faded back into obscurity, with a family that doesn't care, and only his dog loves him. It is almost as if he had never been (Unlike his younger sister, Mom, who insists on acting like only SHE matters! What a terrible case of an ego gone wild. If she was William Shatner, I could see it...but she isn't. And that's all there is to it.)

It's tragic. (sob) Let us all bow our heads and say a prayer for poor Uncle Harold, just another unappreciated member of Mom's very large extended family...none of whom get any respect around here, because she insists on hogging all the glory herself.

Why, it's almost like they were related to Nurse Ratched. They should get family counseling.

If you were only paying attention in real time, LH, you would notice that the posts were from two of you bastardly concoctions, which appear now to have been folded into Mom as a reminder of your fatuous and dastardly lack of constancy.

MOM reabsorbs her own, obviously.

Little Hawk, your case is even worse than I imagined earlier. I suggest you check around for a truckstop with the old table juke boxes and find one with that song in the play list. Sit yourself down with a cuppa coffee and a honeybun and play it real loud, see if you catch any woman's eye as you have the day's caffeine and carbs.

THe Hawkster, he fell on his face
When his Mom put him hard in his place.
He'd tried to undo her,
To utterly screw her!
He was surely one hard-bitten case.

I have returned to my place in the High Mountains, grasshoppers. Nay, mayflies (save for those with XX chromosomes), whose lives are measured in hours and whose entire Time is spent looking to reproduce. Oh ye Unknowing Ones! Do you not know that all BS is one, just as time and space and mass and energy are Unified? Cannot your minds accept this simple fact? You are all one with BS and BS is one with you. This you must accept if you are to reach The Higher Knowledge.

The notion of a Dewey-headed index-card shuffler and toter of tomes prescribing Higher Knowledge strikes me as faintly ludicrous. But just faintly, like the walking ghost of Red Skelton on a castle parapet at midnight in October by the Rhone, or something.

To be quite frank, Stilly, I have discovered over the past few decades that acquiring a new lady friend can be a hazardous undertaking that, although it surely has its inspiring and happy periods, it can eventually utterly overturn one's peaceful life, destroy one's peace of mind, and drive one finally to complete desperation. It is not the answer for enduring happiness, at least not for me. Perhaps it is for some. But if people think that someone or something outside of themselves is going to make them "happy ever after"....they're deluding themselves.

And, hey, no one believed that more fervently than me...back when I was younger! I went looking everywhere for that special "someone". I found myself a lot of heartache and trouble. I lost myself a few times in the process.

She ain't out there. She's inside me, quietly waiting for me to find her. She has always been inside me.

I realize most people won't believe that. They'll keep looking for the rest of their lives on the outside for what they can only find within themselves. That is the common condition of humanity. Jesus talked about this a lot. He said "look within". So did Buddha. So did all the great Masters. They were not whistling in the wind.

I'm not saying partnerships aren't good. They are. But you have to find happiness within yourself first...not look to find it in a partnership. If you ARE happy within yourself, then a partnership will probably work quite well, and its whole will be greater than the sum of its parts.

****

As for you, Amos, all you are doing is once again defending an ossified orthodoxy that you have long erected in your own mind...namely, the supposed sanctity of this gigantic, rambling, meaningless thread, characterized in your mind as an imagined "Mom"...the supposed Mother of all BS. And it's a complete fiction. And you know it. Yet you upbraid me for suggesting it ain't real??? Fie, sir! Fie! You are insincere in your protestations. You couldn't possibly be silly enough to believe them. You're too smart for that. Cease, therefore, your ridiculous quasi-religious posturing, go off and make some burnt offerings or something at the shrine of Mom to impress yourself and the other true believers here, and cease your efforts to get me arrested and crucified for daring to point out that your Holy Temple of MOAB has been erected on a foundation of sand, and put together with straw and rubber cement.

"check around for a truckstop with the old table juke boxes and find one with that song in the play list. Sit yourself down with a cuppa coffee and a honeybun and play it real loud, see if you catch any woman's eye as you have the day's caffeine and carbs."

You must be joking! ;-) I don't even like places like that. I avoid them most of the time. They're noisy, and the general level of company sucks! My kind of place is a quiet Asian restaurant where they serve me a big pot of Green tea and a rice dish of some kind or maybe Vietnamese Pho (soup) or Japanese sushi, and I sit there quietly for an hour or two, happily reading a book on Buddhism or Taoism or esoteric Christianity or international politics or philosophy...and nobody bothers me...and I bother no one.

Yeah, but they don't have table jukeboxes where you can attract a potential hook-up (I won't push you into a long term relationship) with the lure of a seductive (or raunchy) song that lays it all out for you. I suppose you could go into your swank-yet-smooth Asian restaurant with your iPod and play your song through your earbuds so loud that people around you would hear.

Hmm.

I suppose it's an option worth giving some consideration to. But I don't think the strategy you're suggesting is exactly the right one.

Perhaps Amos can come up with a better plan. He's brilliant. I'm sure he can work up something. I await his suggestions with bated breath.

YEah, I have a better plan. Take your savings and fly to Bangkok. Immerse yourself in the pleasant vibrations of a Buddhist culture in a modern city. Wander the shops and parlors of Phuket. Get yourself massaged and scrubbed and s****d and f****d until your knees give in and you become fluid in youe chi.

Let us know how it goes. At least it will get you off this dastardly obsession with disloyal disharmony.

My brother got fluid in his chi once but the doctor gave him some shots and cleared it right up. His chi was burning and hurting like crazy but the shots worked. Got it from a lady he'd met in a suave, sophisticated Asian restaurant outside of Bangkok. He'd been enjoying pho when she came over and sat down and...well, after that he stuck to Campbell's Chicken Noodle because he HAD a chicken noodle (so to speak).

In the murky backwaters of Mudcat history there was a famous incident of a kestrel being set alight. As I recall it was aboard the ALbert B. Hansell. Anyway the witch-woman was greatly embarassed at the sight of her kestrel going up in flames, and ended up marrying the Gambler in her confusion.

Kestrels, although protected by Federal Law, are great birds for falconry. They're smart and trainable and would make a good pet, except for some petty objections by my wife (see Federal Law, above).

Ebbie...who the hell is Pretty Kestrel?

And here's a question for you. Do you doubt that the peace of mind and sense of true love and completion you (and everyone else who's ever lived) have always instinctively sought can be found inside yourself? If so...if you doubt that it can be found inside yourself...then you'll probably look for it everywhere else, won't you? And not find it. That describes the plight of humanity in a nutshell. They're looking for love and completion outside of themselves and not finding it. This drives them to seek out romance, success, possessions, fame, addictions of all kinds, obsessions of all kinds.

But if you indeed found true love and completion inside yourself...then would you not be in a far better position to have any kind of positive relationship with another?

That is why I look for it inside myself. I no longer believe in the popular fairy tale that someone else's love coming from outside me is going to complete me. Not any longer.

That doesn't mean I won't necessarily opt for a relationship. It just means I don't think it's the real solution to a perceived lack of love and completion. The real solution is genuine inner change, not more outer acquisition. Most of us in this society are completely glutted by this time with outer acquisition, and it hasn't quenched our thirst or met our deeper emotional needs, has it?

LH, you've discovered what women, over a certain age (in my experience) have discovered through their lives. Many women live alone because they like their own company. They had a relationship, they have children, but now, they prefer to enjoy life at home in a solitary manner. Partners are available when desired, but aren't desirable for a permanent relationship.

I have a couple of friends who would like to explore a deeper relationship, but, I figure, I raised my children. A guy around the house is like having another teenager here. If they're your own children, you can tolerate a lot more than if they're not related to you. I realize this is horribly unfair to a lot of very funny, smart, civilized men out there. If I meet one of those, then we'll see.

And this is the "do it yourself" generation, if there ever was one. Nothing is left unattended to. So to speak.

Which is why we have about 3,500 square feet, 2.5 kitchens, 3.5 bathrooms, and separate offices and places to engage in our out own activities. And yet...we do things together, support each other, care for each other.

Got lucky, I guess. Or put a lot of hard work into it. Or something.

As I said to my wife last night, as we marveled at how well we understand each other's viewpoints, "We belong to a generation where when something is broken, you fix it instead of throwing it away." A line I borrowed from a cartoon. But it was well said.

LH, the one li'l piece missing from this philosophical glaze is that the complete soul deals with life by building, creating effects, engaging and exchanging. The perfection of the inner quest begins when the attention turns outward to act in the world to do good. To live with little is a virtue, but to give much is a greater. Whether your creations are of beauty, social justice, utilities for the many, brilliant inventions, are water for Uganda makes no difference, but the test of the perfected soul is found in the fruits of his exchange with the world. The source of morale in human living is in the things one delivers to others. Not the things one gets, you are quite right, but in what one gives toward the good.

Yup! ;-D Often as not, that's pretty much what it's like, allright. Most men go on being boys (to some extent) for the rest of their lives.

Now, for those of you like Rap and Amos who have found a longterm marriage that worked well...good for you! You were either lucky...or you had what it takes...or both. I can't say. I never figured I was cut out for a traditional marriage, not at any age. It just wasn't what I was looking for.

Some friends of mine live out in West Texas now, but one of the things about the places were they live is space. They have 20 acres they initially moved to and started building the various "out buildings," hoping one day to find a contractor they can afford who will go that far out in the boonies to build the big house. Meanwhile, for investment they bought another property out there that has "manufactured housing" on it and some out buildings. They have various hobbies and interests that require space (she has a very large quilting machine that would take up a good amount of my living room and he's always tinkering with the welder and trailers and the tractor, etc.)

I am glad I purchased a portable building from a friend that is a large PVC garden shed and greenhouse. I find having dedicated space for my garden work and equipment is very nice and keeps it separated from the garage and the house. I also have a couple of fridges and a large freezer. Not like under Rap's sundeck, and I'm sure no one would ever occupy any of these upright or chest units. :)

See, Don, your little "brother" Shame is actually not related to you in any way. He was left on the doorstep of the local vicarage with note that said, "Please take care of my baby, a child of Shame." The Vicar, a good and gentle bachelor, read the note to mean that he was to "take care of" the baby and that the kid was named "Shame." He was also a man of the world but didn't feel it quite right to "take care of" an infant -- yes, a concrete block would insure that the kid would never resurface but he still felt odd about it.

So he paid your mother, a good woman, to "take care of" the kid. SHE misunderstood the Vicar and raised him; his genetic makeup (which you do NOT share) has made him what he is today: a beer-stealing, loud-mouthed, foul-breathed, ignorant, two-faced slob.

UNLESS the BDIBR who posts about his calculus grades and such actually IS the same person and has undergone a complete transformation, I think you should finally complete the charge laid upon your sainted mother and "take care of him."

I thought of a way to prove to all of you, and especially Amos, that I created y'all.

It is obvious that I have never seen or done anything that I was not meant to see or do. From this it logically follows that I must have willed everything that I have ever seen or done, and that which I have not seen or done does not exist. Therefore, I am the Creator of All that exists.

There's too many good going and not enough good still around or coming on. 4. By the way, I haven't read the "Summa T" since the middle Sixties.
