What'd he just say? I don't know none of them polysyllabic words.

Gosh, LH, maybe you should try and read what I wrote, looking up the terms you don't know, so you could understand better, ya know whuddImean?

Calling it bafflegab is a confession, not an accusation!

Huh? And here I was thinking you'd be pleased and flattered by my comments. ;-D

The one word I didn't know in your post was dinglicheit. It's obviously a German word. I shall look it up now and enlighten myself.

Okay, I found it. You spelt it wrong! A shocking error. (I'll have to revoke your Gold Star, and downgrade it to a Silver Star.) It's spelt dinglichkeit. It means "materiality".

I now grok the meaning of your brilliant post, but my life has been improved not a whit by arriving at that understanding. What do you intend to do about it?

Odd--I found multiple instances of it being spelled my way, but the dictionary supports your trivial distinction, so go ahead and demote my rave review, you petty-minded turkey-fucker. May your dinglichkeit fall off from neglect.

"Trivial"? You call my distinction "trivial"? Fie, sir! Mind your manners, I say, or I shall be forced to enact stern retaliatory measures of the most stringent sort possible...or even imaginable!

LH doesn't like turkeys. Unless you mean the country of Turkey, which would put him in some record book.

Just thinking here. If my dinglichkeit did fall off from neglect, as Amos suggests, I would then be free to have it bronzed and put on public display in some important place somewhere, like maybe the Parliamentary rotunda in Ottawa...or in a display case at the Bobby Orr Museum.

I can't believe that Amos didn't post this link already.

One of the biggest debuts in the science world could happen in a matter of weeks: The Higgs boson may finally, really have been discovered.

Yeah, but that's in Canadian dollars...which is about at parity, last time I checked.

What'd they do...rustle cattle?

I knew Bos'n named Higgs. Hal Higgs. Spent forty years in the Navy. He wasn't hard to discover; you just followed the smell of rum.

Well Still, I did post it, but to Facebook. It;s pretty damned exciting in respect to the possible implications. Consider, as an analogy, the first discovery of electrons in 1897 by J.J. Thompson. It took decades to turn that into vacuum tubes and radio receivers. Today, building on scores of new solid-state components, we can make the little buggers do all kinds of things. Suppose we began discovering that there really was a particle behind the generation of mass in space, and suppose (although it is a stretch) that we could learn to manage the intercession with the Higgs field that this implies.

Next thing you know, structure and mass aree coupled selectively. Acceleration of masses becomes child's play. The gigantic forces of the Saturn rockets are relegated to the same status as ox-carts and Egyptian slaves as ways of doing things. The door opens to the nullification of gravity and possibly near light speed travel.

Lee DeForest created the "audion" tube in 1906, just 9 years after Thompson's discovery, which led to the development of the triode. The Marconi Company was using a diode in 1904. The existence of the electron was first postulated in 1838 and it may have been earlier. Hardly "decades," Amos.

Well, you certainly set me straight and split my hair just right there, Mister R. Now I see that I was deeply and profoundly wrong, thanks to your scrupulous eye for detail. Why the whole idea seems vaguely ridiculous!! Thanks to god I was disabused of my excitement and vision for the future by your quick and cutting eye for precision concerning the past. Whew!! That was a close one!! I am in your debt, sir. Somewhere.

IF not for Mom,
Man I wouldn't have no fun
Life would be so darn humdrum
No where left to beat my drum
With great aplomb,
If not for Mom.

If not for Mom,
I would never have much joy
Be a sober-sided boy
Wouldn't have a favorite toy
To call "the bomb",
If not for Mom.

When the ordinary world
Has grown too tedious and dry
I can browse the world of Mom,
To lift my spirits higgghhh, ohhhhh

If not for Mom
There wouldn't be no Little Hawk
Or Rapparree to carp and squawk
To make you wonder where he's really coming frooom
If not for Mom.
If not for Mom.
If no-o-o-ot for Mo-o-o-o-o-mmmmm.

Build me a Temple of Learning, said she,
Build me a Temple of stone ?
Build for all ages: assuredly,
   Build for a man's Reason a throne;
For Freedom and Truth shall prosper
Where Knowledge and Science are known!

...From pillar, rotunda, arcade,
   From lecture-room, statue, and fane,
And landscape, and scholarly shade,
   And comrades saluted again,
And professor, and classmate and friend,
And library, tome upon tome ?
The beams of old memories lend
New light as they welcome us home:
O, Mother! Fair Mother! refresh us,
In the scope of thy bounteous dome!

See? The ineffable SPirit of Mom has been with us down the ages....

Amos, it has to do with my upbringing. Being someone with a graduate degree and, well, lemme see, about 48 years experience in looking it up, it is psychologically impossible not to "set the record straight." This is not due to any grandstanding on my part, but simply my lone, lorn quest to eliminate ignorance and superstition and bring people into the light of Truth and Knowledge. Yes, it's a lonely and often dangerous job, but someone has to do it and Mom selected me for the task because she knew that I would do it without fear or favor, but with sympathy, empathy and élan.

Pish and tush! There isn't one of us here who can, in any final sense, set the record straight. We don't possess sufficient knowledge or wisdom to do so. We can offer our opinions, make interesting comments, tell entertaining stories, and engage in pleasant discourse, but we are not capable of setting the record straight, because we don't know enough to be empowered to. We can try, mind you, and do our best when we try, but that's about as far as it goes.

Rap, thy supposed omnipotence existeth only in thine own mind, a mere strutting and phantasmal assumption which passeth away like a cloudy mist evaporating quickly in the blinding rays of the Eternal Sun.

You want me to give you a piece of my mind? Whatever would you do with it? But, if it will make you happy and better adjusted...here goes:

The total enthalpy, H, of a system cannot be measured directly. Thus, change in enthalpy, ΔH, is a more useful quantity than its absolute value. The change ΔH is positive in endothermic reactions, and negative in heat-releasing exothermic processes. ΔH of a system is equal to the sum of non-mechanical work done on it and the heat supplied to it. So is this a reflection of Heisenberg's Uncertainty Principle in thermodynamics?

Well, that was exciting, wasn't it?

To give it away would be like a drunk givin' away his last half a bottle of cheap wine. LH is not the kinda guy who would ask someone to do that.

I don't think so, Rapp. It looks more like molecular theory stretched to include NEwtonian laws of motion, nothing more. Calling it enthalpy is a Great Furbelow but not substantively different.

SInce you are flinging terms about, I suppose you are differentiating between time as a universal condition and time as expressed by a period of continuity of something.

I think the former is a crashing great lie, myself.

Enthalpy is a measure of the total energy of a thermodynamic system. It includes the internal energy, which is the energy required to create a system, and the amount of energy required to make room for it by displacing its environment and establishing its volume and pressure.

Greek word enthalpos (ἔνθαλπος), which means to put heat into. It
(Wikipedia)

Duration is a theory of time and consciousness posited by the French philosopher Henri Bergson. Bergson sought to improve upon inadequacies he perceived in the philosophy of Herbert Spencer, due, he believed, to Spencer's lack of comprehension of mechanics, which led Bergson to the conclusion that time eluded mathematics and science.[1] Bergson became aware that the moment one attempted to measure a moment, it would be gone: one measures an immobile, complete line, whereas time is mobile and incomplete. For the individual, time may speed up or slow down, whereas, for science, it would remain the same. Hence Bergson decided to explore the inner life of man, which is a kind of duration, neither a unity nor a quantitative multiplicity.[1] Duration is ineffable and can only be shown indirectly through images that can never reveal a complete picture. It can only be grasped through a simple intuition of the imagination.[2] (Ibid)

Time, in the sense I am using it, is measured duration. Does, for instance, duration exist in the heart of a black hole? Does time? Does space? Other than when dealing with Shame McBride can we really understand duration or time? If there is no way to measure duration (no natural cycles, etc.) does time exist? And if time doesn't exist, does space?

Ah, then we had our definitions flipped. Duration is the ground, and measuring parts of it is considered time.

The question is whether there such a thing as duration, or whether the apparent condition we call duration is merely a byproduct of viewing with the core consideration that the particles are persisting. This is a very Newtonian sort of assumption, but wildly popular in the "reality is real" crowd.

Played all evening with friends at a very classy house in Cardiff, north of here, backed by pedal steel and all the amps you can eat. We bounced around, doing half-fragments and figuring out keys and chords, but we had some certain sweet moments when three voices came together to break open the universe. Music is endlessly amazing. Endlessly. It opens windows to jump through and suddenly, when it comes together, you are in an Alice-bubble of beauteous madcap harmonies, where the riffs are perfect trails into magic. When it happens, oxytocin flows and love conquers all. This makes it worth the scrabble needed to do it.

That is because I am always and absolutely certain about uncertainty. There is so much to be uncertain about that we should have an Uncertainty Day, much like Thanksgiving, where we could all gather around the table for a meal of mystery meat, vegetables of unknown provenance and dessert of unknown origin with people to whom we may or may not be related or even acquainted.

There has been much skepticism about the Legion Hovel here in Pocatello. Normally it is not allowed to be photographed, but by the especial and gracious permission of the Colonel-General, here are some photos. For security reasons the Hovel was all but empty when these were taken; there is a photo showing past members at a Gala Festival at the Hovel.

The lounge. The Grand Hall. Legionnaires of the past. The Grand Meeting Room. Beer being delivered.

It's kept nice because it isn't used much. There are a few of us who use it of an evening, perusing various tomes and world-wide newspapers as we sip fine brandy or cognac. "Copper" Johnny keeps out the riff-raff who do come attempt to enter in their search for a copy of "Hustler" or "Miss Birch-All's School For Naughty Boys" -- a tap with his blackjack and kick downstairs with his calked boots usually prevents their return.

But Shane simple reacts to things the way Shane would. He regards Amos and Rapparee the way most people would regard pestilential vermin of the most undesirable and intolerable sort. He is naturally hoping that the Galactic Overlord will follow through on his threat and "remove" them.

Rapparee has persisted in calling Shane "Shame"...and lately Amos has begun doing so as well. Can you see why this would irritate the boy from Blind River? It's as simple as 1, 2, 3. If Shane had a button he could push that would cause both Rapparee and Amos to vanish in a sudden puff of smoke and fire, he WOULD push it.

As it stands, he's hoping the Galactic Overlord will do it for him.
