The following sounds like it was invented by a Freds publicist who had gotten up on the worng sides of her/its beds, I suppose. But LO!! It comes from a web site owned and run by the Borg of all Hightech Companies, Lockheed Martin, whose very name is a mindmeld and against whom resistance is futile. Do a Google for "Gravity Probe B" if thou doubtest!

Enjoy:

"Gravity Probe B is the relativity gyroscope experiment being developed by NASA and Stanford University to test two extraordinary, unverified predictions of Albert Einstein's general theory of relativity.

The experiment will check, very precisely, tiny changes in the direction of spin of four gyroscopes contained in an Earth satellite orbiting at 400-mile altitude directly over the poles. So free are the gyroscopes from disturbance that they will provide an almost perfect space-time reference system. They will measure how space and time are warped by the presence of the Earth, and, more profoundly, how the Earth's rotation drags space-time around with it. These effects, though small for the Earth, have far-reaching implications for the nature of matter and the structure of the Universe. "

Well, there ya go..."far reaching implications" for the structure of the universe itself. If you're not hip to Dilbert-class jargon, it may escape you that this means "we will probably reorganize it soon!"

Just in case you thought all this science fiction eas fictional...

A

I was in the hospital, having had my left big toenail removed because of a chronic infection. The anesthesia had worn off and it bloody well hurt.

In walks an aide of some sort and cheerily chirped, "And how are WE feeling today?"

I was sixteen at the time and I told her. She didn't care for it; I guess I was supposed to chirp right back that I felt like dancing out of there.

Or at work (the totality of real conversations):

"Do you know what time it is?"
"Yes."

"Can you run this copier?"
"Sure."

"I'm looking for a good book." (I work in a public library.)
"Well, you'll probably find one here."

"I'm looking for a good book."
"Why? You read everything we've got or what?"

"Can you recommend a good book?"
"Yes, but it's checked out. ALL the good books are checked out. You don't read bad books, do you? Neither does anyone. So all the good ones are checked out."

Last evening I went to Office Depot to get some ink cartridges and I took a stroll through the software aisle, not really looking for anything in particular, just seeing what was there. A guy comes over to me and says, "What are we looking for?"

Hmm. I dunno. World peace? An end to hunger? A cure for cancer? Weapons of mass destruction? Pantyhose that stay up? Oh, no, wait, he wants to know if I'M looking for something here in the store. Sure, that must be it...

Another one of those, Kim C, is the ATM machine. I've pointed this out to a few people, and they didn't know what ATM stood for.

Now I'm off to get some money out of the local Automatic Teller Machine machine.

LOL! That's what I'll say next time, for sure. And I do expect to die before the end of this century too, so it would be quite an honest response.

Kim:

"Keeping" is a passive verb as well as an active verb. It means to endure in a condition, or close to it. To be "keeping" well means to be doing all right, healthy and I suppose relatively happy. This useage is not widely used as it once was but it is still recognized.

O'course you could answer it with "not well, I'm afraid. Decomposing slowly. Rot, you know -- expect to die before the end of the century."

Great example. "SIN number" is another one of those (but only in Canada, where we have a Social Insurance Number, instead of a Social Security Number).

Mine is 593 873 530 985 AH

And if you believe that, I've got a bridge to sell you too...

- LH

p.s. When they ask you if you're finding everything okay, Kim, look around at the store critically and say, "No. It's all wrong. The colors on the walls clash horribly with most of the displays, and the floor doesn't look right either. I'd get some decorators in and redo the whole place if I were you."

People are constantly saying things that don't actually make much sense, just to fill in the empty spaces. The empty spaces cause them to feel nervous. One thing that people say around here all the time that drives me NUTS is "How are you keeping?"

Keeping? Keeping what(?) is what I want to know. How am I keeping what? How does one keep something?

Well, what they actually mean when they say that is simply: "How are you?"

So they add one extra word which obfuscates the original meaning. It's inefficient and pointless and it bugs the hell out of me, but that's the way their parents said it, so that's the way they say it. I have no idea if it's a habit confined to Simcoe County, Ontario, Canada or if it has spread further.

Okay, then, here's another one. Who else thinks it's funny when you go to a shop, and the clerk says, "Are you finding everything okay?"

What the hell does that mean, exactly?

Am I finding what I'm looking for? Maybe yes, maybe no, if I'm obviously wandering aimlessly about, then I'm probably not finding it.

Do I find the conditions in the establishment to be suitable? Hmm. Half the time I go into a department at a department store and there ain't anyone there to help me. Once when I was trying to pay for a hat, I went to three registers, to find No One. I went to Fine Jewelry and they said they could only ring up Fine Jewelry, but anyone else could help me. But I can't find anyone else, I said.

I surely didn't find that okay. But I did eventually get to pay for my hat.

Listen, chaps. You don't know what you are in for if we Finalize you. But because of Bee-dubya-ell's emotional ties to one of ours, we'll provide a clue. One single little word, but this clue should scare the pantaloons off of you. One single word, and it applies equally to the "United States" and the "United Kingdom." One single word:

                         re-election

Amos, you sarcastic bastard, we have a trash disposal device all prepared for you when you get around to visiting Orillia. It dices, it slices, it squooshes... :-) You can buy them at a 1-800 number on the shopping channel.

Freds - "Finality", is it? Oooooo...I am terrified, just terrified! If you go to a site called "Zetatalk" you will find that a woman named Nancy Lieder has already forecast Finality for our civilization anyway. It was scheduled for May 15th past. When it didn't happen on schedule Nancy adroitly re-scheduled it for an unknown date sometime in the next few years, more or less...depending on what does or doesn't happen. BUT...be assured that Finality has already been guaranteed by Nancy Lieder, which kind of upstages your feeble threats, doesn't it? Hmmmm??? Now just "push off", as the British say. There's no use threatening to finalize what is already due for certain finalization regardless!

We have attempted to be your friends, but your silly insistence upon xenophobia seems to preclude any sort of intelligent and amicable interaction. To mock your betters is considered not only dangerous, but extremely bad manners by the rest of Civilization.

Before effecting Finality upon you, however, we have taken one step which might raise your level of gentility such that you can take your place in the Galactic Scheme (albeit at a very low level as a Self-Endangered Species). Should you fail in this, we will be forced, with great reluctance, to Finalize your pitiful little solar system.

Oh, yes. Bee-Dubya-Ell, Bubba Bubba is no longer looking for you. Herit has decided -- and tests have confirmed -- that such intelligent and lovely little hatchlings could never have shared any of your genetic materials and that they are the result of autoendoparthenogenesis after all. To whatever dim level your awareness is capable, however, you should know that ither's male-male progenitor is searching for you -- something about "breaking my little herit's hearts" and "trifling with ither's affections." He-he is carrying a weapon he-he obtained on this planet which is capable of projecting multiple small, round, leaden balls by means of the rapid oxidation of nitrocellulose initiated by a sharp blow to a small container of mecury fulminate. He-he is also carrying a large "straight razor" and a "baseball bat."

Should you care to know, the hatchlings will be stewed tomorrow.

I fail to see what you mean, Amos... :-)

In order to fail to exist, something must perforce exist, because if it didn't exist it could not experience failure! Failure is not experienced in a total vacuum, it implies a prior field of action, so to speak, upon which field one endeavours to succeed or fail at something.

Now, I can see that something could fail to continue existing on a given timeline, but how can it fail to exist, period?

Further to that, linear time as we know it is itself contained within the eternal NOW which is inclusive of all time...therefore although something may fail to exist at a given moment on the timeline it cannot fail to exist in the larger context of all Eternity.

Anything that is capable of failure HAS to exist!

Dontcha love this thread? :-)

And who is the scrawny old harpy that RR is referring to? If this insult is directed at my maiden aunt, I shall be vexed! If it is directed toward Orillia's most senior town librarian, then I must admit it's accurate.

I still do not believe that anyone can fail to believe something. They can believe it or not believe it. They can choose to believe or not believe. They can decide to believe or not to believe. But they cannot fail to believe! It's ridiculous. It would be like failing to exist (or not).

This implies failure on such a massive scale that I am surprised you dare to admit to it on a public forum... :-)

Little Hawk,

To address your confused state:

1) "Fail to believe" is synonymous with "I find difficult to believe". If "believe" carries too many religious connotations you may substitute "understand". It may be a southern colloquialism that is not used in Soviet Cannuckstan, or possibly not even north of Virginia. I don't know.

2) "They", in the context of the post to which you refer, means the members of The Fred Society. It has nothing to do with paranoid states. I'm not saying that I'm not paranoid, and, yes, sometimes "they" does refer to "them", but not in this case.

3)"My earlier post" refers to the post which I made to this thread at 8:15 PM on September 30, in which I mentioned having received junk mail from Fred's stores and to which you responded "Har!" at 2:38 PM on October 1.

I hope you are now un-confused, clear and lucid and only suffering under the delusions and illusions that are normal parts of your rather tilted waking consciousness.

Bee-dubya, I have tried and tried to understand what the hell it is you mean by saying:

"I also fail to believe that they didn't mention the Fred's stores to which I referred in my earlier post."

Ummm...what? It isn't a question of believing, it's just a question of looking it up. How does one "fail to believe" something? You either do believe it or you don't....or you don't know what to believe, in which case you reserve judgement, pending further investigation. Does this failure to believe have you pacing the floor at night? Who are the mysterious "they" who didn't mention the Fred's stores? Which earlier post?

Does your failure to believe imply a reluctance to rest your assurance upon assumptions from which one can infer a lack of complete certainty or is it rather the case that you are simply not yet experienced enough in the dialectics of belief systems and their corollary apposites to venture a firm opinion based on belief or unbelief?

Maybe I just missed it (and, contrary to popular belief, I do have a life to lead so I can't spent all day looking for it) but I didn't see any reference to the '60s British group Freddy and the Dreamers on the Fred Society page. Who can forget "Do the Freddy"? I certainly hope that they are, in fact, mentioned somewhere on the sight. Having a Fred Society site without that particular Fred is like having a Bill Society without Shatner.

I also fail to believe that they didn't mention the Fred's stores to which I referred in my earlier post. (No it wasn't a joke.) Fred's stores are all over south Alabama but the one that just opened here is Fred's first incursion into Florida. They began as chain of drug stores but the bankruptcy of a regional grocery chain left some larger-than-a-drugstore-would-ever-need size retail spaces for lease at below-market rates so Fred's has expanded into a WalMart wannabe.

Oh dear Lord! I opened my mailbox and whatta ya think was in it? Junk mail from freds! That's right folks! Freds have opened a store in my town of residence.   (Well, actually I don't reside there. I live 20 miles away, but it's the closest town big enough to have a post office.) I have received a 24 page color brochure that says:

"FRED'S Grand Opening! Wednesday, Oct. 1st!"

I did make note of the fact that "FRED'S" is capitalized and contains an apostrophe, but I'm sure that is just due to those tricky freds trying to confuse the issue. We know the truth! It's freds' attempt to hunt me down and force me to pay hatchling support to that slut Bubba Bubba! Well. it ain't gonna happen! You freds think you can just open a store and offer DVD players for $49.99 and Dawn dishwashing liquid for 4/$3.00 and that I'll rush in there like a typical dollar-store junkie and be ensnared in your trap. Hah! I wouldn't touch one of those DVD players with an eleven-foot pole! I'm sure that there's some kind of built-in tracking device in the remote control. No way baby! This guy wasn't born yesterday. You freds want me, come and get me! But you better come prepared for a fight!

On the other hand, the 39 oz. cans of Folgers coffee for $4.50 each are a pretty good deal, and my wife likes Folgers.   Maybe I'll send her in for a couple of cans.
