Yes, in the right places. Like the Österreichisches Staatsarchiv, for example. You might even find pictures of Wolfy and Billy, like this one.   Billy is in the center foreground with his back to us, as it often was to Wolfy, who is seated at the head of the table, fourth from the left.

The picture, by the way, is of a certain Biergarten in Vienna called, for some reason, "Der Gai Vacquero".

Tamper with my delusions at your peril, Madame! They are mine, and mine alone. None other is fit to judge them...nor to bear the imponderable weight of their impeccable solitude.

William Shatner WAS W.A. Mozart in a previous life. Furthermore, he was also William Shakespeare,

No no no! LH, you're confusing reincarnation with Star Trek. That was James Daly (father of Tyne), not James Kirk. You know, he created his companion the beautiful robot Louise? Kirk couldn't help meddling. . .

sheesh. You need to straighten out your delusions. . .

Ah, yes, "the right places"...

No doubt.

Well, yes and no. LH, archives show that Billy met Wolfy when Billy was tossed into Hohenasperg prison as Wolfy's cellmate. Wolfy being quite domineering, even bullying, you can imagine how the relationship developed. They were released in a general amnesty following the accession of Prinz Frederich Hermann to the Mayorality of Heidelberg; Wolfy insisted that they then move to Vienna. Billy wanted to go to Toronto, but Wolfy's arguments (and his shank) left little room for argument. They were picked up numerous times by the Sündegruppe of the Wiener Polizei, paid fines up to three gold trunckenlieder, and were finally banished to Italy, "wo solche Sachen angenommen werden" (they were seperated with a crowbar and put on different coaches, one going to Venice and the other, for some reason, to Toronto).

You can find these records easily enough if you will only look for them in the right places.

You have unwittingly hit on a great truth there, Rapaire. My studies into the Akashic Records have convinced me beyond any shadow of a doubt that William Shatner WAS W.A. Mozart in a previous life. Furthermore, he was also William Shakespeare, and that's why he's so good at Shakespearian style acting. The Man simply cannot avoid greatness, no matter where or when he chooses to walk among us. What he will accomplish in his next life, I can only wonder. With luck, I will be there to see it.

"Wolfy" and "Billy" were a well-known couple of rakes on the streets of Vienna. They'd walk around drinking beer, eating madelines and sachertorte, molesting the barmaids, drinking beer, eating schnitzel, molesting small animals, binking dreer....

In fact, it was Shatner they consistently gave Wolfgang the motivation to strive for something better.

Well, of course Steve Martin never played the youthful Mozart! Or were you talking about W. Shatner? Shatner never played the youthful Mozart because when Shatner was youthful so was W. A. Mozart -- in fact, they were good friends.

Yes, you're right. He should have done it back in the late 60s or early 70s. (sigh) A great opportunity has passed us all by.

He never portrayed the youthful Mozart either! What a tragedy.

I haven't seen "All of Me", no. I'm sure he's very good in that one.

Are you aware that William Shatner has never played Cyrano de Bergerac? My gosh, what the world has missed! I wonder if it's too late to get him to take on that role?

Well, aren't you just the widdle puwrist!!?

I submit that Tutu's stand against the encroachments of China on the Dalai Lama's land trumps every production of Cyrano de Bergerac ever written. As does Steve Martin, for that matter.

Did you ever see him (Martin, not Tutu) in "All of Me?" He out-Chaplins Chaplin in demonstrating the movements of a woman soul running a borrowed male body in a situation where she is forced to pretend to be a man. It is side-splittingly funny and he does it flawlessly.

Sorry, Amos, I do not feel that Desmond Tutu's rendition of Cyrano was anything but mediocre! I am surprised you would even bring it up, frankly. Tutu should stick to what he can do well and leave the acting of the classics to professional actors, in my opinion.

As for Steve Martin in "Roxanne", that movie was great, but I only wish to focus on films that tell the original story in the original time frame...not modernized adaptations.

A serious question: Which would you say is the finest film adaptation ever done of the story "Cyrano De Bergerac"?

I know Jose Ferrer's acting of the part in 1950 is thought very well of, but other than that the movie seems quite dated. Then there's the one from 1990 with Gerard Depardieu...seems to be very good.

Opinions?

I think it's a marvelous story.

SHORT LIGHT. The world*s shortest single photon has been produced
by physicists at Oxford University. Light can be thought of as a
series of waves or, in the dualistic view of reality prescribed by
quantum science, as a collection of quanta, particle-like parcels of
light energy referred to as photons. At any place along a light
beam there may be many photons present or in special cases just
one. Creating single photons is not easy to do. It is possible to
make photons in pairs by sending laser light through special
crystals. Even a pure-color laser beam will consist of many
photons; but occasionally one of these photons will be *down
converted,* that is, will turn into two photons each with half the
energy of the original photon.

When a pair has been created, the
detection of one of these half-energy photons heralds the presence
of its twin. Furthermore, these photons are entangled, meaning that
the properties of one photon are inextricably linked to those of its
partner and detecting one can ruin the quantum state of the other.
By minimizing these quantum correlations, the researchers obtained
heralded photons with exceptionally high quality and short
duration.

In the Oxford experiment the pairs of photons made had a central
wavelength of about 830 nm, at the border between visible and
near-infrared light. Each of these photons was (in units of time)
about 65 femtoseconds (65 x 10^-15 sec) long. In units of space,
they were about 20 microns long.

The shortest previously produced
single photon was about 1picosecond (10^-12 sec) long. Even shorter
pulses of light-stretching only hundreds of attoseconds-have been
made, but these pulses consist of many photons. One of the Oxford
researchers, Peter Mosley (p.mosely1@physics.ox.ac.uk,
44-01865-282640), says that this new experiment represents the first
time that textbook photons-identical, localized wavepackets
containing a single quantum of energy-have been produced in a lab.

Oh, Rapaire. You don't know your dingus from a pole in the ground. THIS is what you are talking about:

"Since 966 A.D., Dyngus Day has been associated with the baptism of Prince Mieszko I. Tradition states that Prince Mieszko I along with his court were baptized on Easter Monday. Thus, Dyngus Day and its rites of sprinkling with water have become a folk celebration in thanksgiving for the fact that the first king of Poland was baptized into Christianity, bringing Catholicism to Poland. In more modern times, the tradition continued when farm boys in Poland wanted to attract notice from the girls of their choice. It was custom to throw water and hit the girls on their legs with twigs or pussywillows. Cologne was used instead of water by the more gallant lads. The ladies would reciprocate by throwing dishes & crockery and Tuesday was their day of revenge, imitating the same tactics.

WHAT DOES THE WORD DYNGUS MEAN?

According to the Encyclopedia Staropolska written in the 19th century by A. Gloger, the word can be traced back to a medieval form of the word "Dingnus," which means "worthy, proper, or suitable." Gloger cites a used of the word, namely "ranson during a war to protect against pillage," as well as a German usage of "Dingen," which means "to come to an agreement, evaluate or buy back." "

So-- let's see -- hit the girls with pussy willows and get hit with flying platters and cups. What fun. THose 10th century POles really knew how to party down!

:D
