Your version is much more reasonable and factual, Rapaire; probably more useful, too.

I still like mine better, though.

You'd best tell him that there's a considerable difference between TV/movie/theatrical fencing and historical/classical/sport fencing.

Historical fencing is an attempt to recreate, from surviving documents and books, how swordfighting was done when it was necessary for survival. This ranges from the Celtic to about the 18th Century and if you include sword duels, right up to today in some places.

Classical fencing is the way fencing was done until about twenty years ago. You learned parry, riposte, lunge, fleche, and the techniques that were developed by historical fencers and the idea was the protect yourself while scoring a point on your opponent. Classical fencing is still big in Europe and among a lot of the US fencers.

Sport fencing, as far as I can tell, is extending your weapon and fleching -- running at your opponent. The idea of protecting yourself because the weapon could, if real, hurt you has pretty much gone by the wayside.

Theatrical fencing is what's used on stage. It is usually done under the supervision of a Master Of Arms and is very carefully blocked and choreographed since the weapons are usually not bated.

Here's a link to the DC Fencing Club.

As a rule, fencing with clubs went out sometime soon after the Ice Age ended.

Modern fencing is done with epees and yippees and hooplas, although some sub-cults prefer more ancient traditions of combat such as mental beams, smile-gleams, and rapid blinking.

My 11 yr old son loves to play fence. He actually spends 2 hours a day at it while playing Star Wars music.

Are there certain fencing clubs one should avoid/seek.

Michael O'Donohogue, who is named on the PZ comic cover, went on to write for the "National Lampoon" and later, I think, for "Saturday Night Live." Frank Springer is/was also fairly well known in the comics world, but I can't put my finger on it right now. Wally Wood, a truly great comics illustrator, drew the "Disneyland Orgy" for "The Realist" in 1967.

Third time is the charm.

Ever since someone mentioned that Shatner/Spears get together, I can't get that kind of misalignment of humans out of my mind. How does one come up with similarly disturbing suggestions? Can we figure out a virtual dart-board, a way to pull together similarly mismatched (but visually rich, if rather nauseating) couples? And it doesn't need to be just airheads.

I was going to try for an example, but instead I just embarrassed myself--I thought "I can put in the name 'Sophia' and of course Ms. Loren will turn up." Alas, in this day and age, it's mostly porn, and that screen is what was up in my Google image search when my 15-year-old son walked into the room. And the damned browser window wouldn't go away, it had to query if I wanted to close all tabs. YES!! Just Close! Geezzz, Louise, too late. Oy.

Idiotic stuff. I tell you, if Shane McBride had the talent to write and illustrate comics, he would have been perfect for doing "Phoebe Zeitgeist" episodes. You just have to be forever stuck at the mental age of a 14-year-old boy with a somewhat dirty mind and have a bit of graphic art talent at the same time.

Nothing is ever original, is it?

King Kong, recycled.

Shit usually lands fairly softly, but it depends, of course, on how far it has to fall first!

I too remember Phoebe Zeitgeist, having come across one of those books once. It was a ludicrous adult comic book sci-fi-fantasy story in which the heroine, the aforesaid Phoebe, kept falling, to her evident surprise, into one disastrous and bizarre situation after another, most of which involved her getting the bejeezus beaten out of her by someone (without any evident physical damage whatsoever...no bruises, no black eyes, not a scratch) while losing the last few remaining shreds of her clothing which in any case would not have covered a large postage stamp. Phoebe had the usual heroic dimensions of such heroines, which is to say that her breasts were probably larger individually than her head, and her thighs and buttocks of similar proportion.

Phoebe was really nothing more than an excuse for morons to indulge in sadistic fantasies of naked girls being pummeled as far as I could see.

It was gross and ridiculous. The violence, however, was of a sort which really couldn't be taken seriously, as it was too humorously stylized to seem anything like real violence. I have no idea why anyone would create such a character or such stories.

You "fell like shit"--now that's an image to ponder, also. I hope you didn't hurt yourself, wherever you landed.

The crud has been going through the kids and their friends. I drove Moonglow home last night and met one of her housemates who left his room long enough to inform us that he is back in the land of the living.

The adventures of Phoebe Zeitgeist appeared in "The Realist" back in the '60s. As I remember her clothing was usually scarce to non-existent.

Ah, indeed. Even the usually anarchic miscreants of the youth in Britain are likely , if you ask them what literature they think of as important, to mention the revered name of Buggerol.

But Buggerol never appreciated the nuances of pure BS and its important in the zeitgeist of Western history, especially in post-deconstructionist cultural relativity evolving since the advent of the Common Market. As such, I fear his relevance will begin to wane, where McStyles will ride the wave of the next generation of post-neo-meta-angst existentialist thinkers,if such there are, and remain in the putative hearts of English-speaking audiences everywhere. Of this I am completely certain.

McStyles' poetry never fails to move the reader! It is comparable, indeed, to the finest verse of some of his best known contemporaries, such as Mortimer Pennysworth McSwain or even the renowned Malcolm Buggerol...though Buggerol's work tends more toward an unabashedly sensualist approach which seems to suggest heaving bosoms and palpitating limbs bursting up from amongst the tangled masses of Nature's tempestuous fields of passion like young Greek gods and goddesses wrestling naked on the towering slopes of Olympus.

As such, Buggerol has done even better with his readings in the southern countries where he has been supported by a fanatical fan base in France, Spain, Italy, and Portugal, yet he retains a smaller ring of devotees to this day in the British Isles.

In fifty posts, if we go on this way,
We will have written half another K
And in the writing, I confess,
Created beauty spun of true BS.
Let us then our glasses raise,
And our Mother roundly praise,
And avow with deep aplomb
We will pledge our hearts to Mom.

According to a poll the magazine conducted, the funniest actor on television is (drum roll)...

William Shatner.

I thought y'all would like to know.

I think in addition to rest and time-waste the concept of 3D participatory museums could really go somewhere. Oh, like PR, the Hall of Pettifoggery, amateur film scenarios, block building and sandbox hall, and so on.

Brittney Spears, like Bill Shatner, has the initials BS...therefore relevant in some strange way to this thread. It's inspiring in Bill's case, a bit disturbing in Brittney's.

Hmmmm--I don't think Brittany Spears is a theoretical particle, somehow...let me just say that if you know anything personally about her, not regurgitated pap from some volkenscheiss member of the paparazzi, then I welcome it. You see, I think we all sense intuitively that self-determined creation is really the defining characteristic of pure BS, the kind that goes straight to Mom's head and keeps her at the top of the class for weeks. Therefore nothing I have to say or not say should outweigh your own clear-sighted sense of personally evaluated Right Action, your own truth. Sing only that song and your Mom will love you forever.

And he didn't mention the entire idiotic Spears family, either. They're all a bunch of ditzes.

I've been out shopping with Moonglow. It's great to see her once and a while, what with being in school and all. Her glasses were fixed, we got some clothes and some groceries--all of those things that MOM would do with is if we were ever to slow down enough to let her help out a little now and then. (Difference here is, Moonglow hasn't slowed down, she's just a broke college student, so is happy to bop around with mom as long as mom is paying for things!)

Both Amos and LH are far too old and out of shape to be on the piste. It takes someone young or young at heart, with excellent hand-eye coordination and an agile, lightning-fast mind to fence any of the three weapons. Someone with the good looks and daring-do that Errol Flynn projected in the movies, someone who is not deterred by by the bloviation and humbuggery of their opponents, but who will skewer in and score!
