Um. In Rapparee's defense,
whoever told him to help out with the bottle transfer
was probably
She Who Must Be Obeyed --
I mean, he WAS following orders, no??

He'd better mark the bottle with his name on it so no one accidentally gets his germs. It's what my kids would insist upon.

I dismantled my old computer setup; keyboard, mouse, and monitor are in the storage closet and the hard drive is in a box of old drives that need to be discarded one of these days via a secure system. And the computer is in the car waiting to be dropped off at Goodwill. A lot of Mudcat posts went through that faithful old device.

I don't know about all of this fancy sucking on bottles of maple syrup; that sounds unsanitary.

Well, I just blew my blood sugar sky-high. Seems like we were transferring pure Vermont maple syrup from one container to another, smaller, one. It overfilled and some was spilled, but I was told to "suck off the top of that so I can close it." I did, and WOW! was it good. I will probably become a heated gas molecule for the rest of the evening.

(Having worked for 12 years in a maple sugaring community I am familiar with the syrup. This was good stuff.)

I remember SRS posting about the sewer line.
Those mushrooms must be celebrating.

I procured the peppers (bell, or sweet, peppers in green, red, yellow, and orange) from an organic foods co-op. Three in each color. After washing them thoroughly, I remove the seeds and membranes, chop them, and put them in a single layer on waxed paper sprayed with Pam on a cookie sheet. The pepper chunks are also lightly sprayed with Pam to prevent drying; after freezing they are bagged and kept frozen until I'm ready to use them. I also freeze onions (sweet ones, I have Walla Walla and Vidalia in the freezer at the moment) and celery. Since all of these will be used in cooking there is no need to keep them crisp. When I nee some I reach into the bag and plop in a handful or whatever is called for -- usually a handful.

He's afraid of showing himself in case he gets seen by one of Chongo's "people" and "dealt with".

Rap's peppers better not have come from my garden! He shouldn't come pick a peck of peppers and not knock on the door to say hello!

Southern California will get a taste of rain similar to N Carolina.
So much for the song about rain and southern California.

My front yard was filled with little fairy-like gray mushrooms last weekend and I should have taken the camera out because they probably aren't there now. After disturbing the soil deeply last November to replace a sewer line an incredible array of new plants have appeared along that path.

All fungi are saprophytic and feed upon dead and decaying organic matter. That is why most people do not pick mushrooms in a cemetery, and why you can get athelete's foot and toenail fungus and a host of other things, few of them pleasant. If you wish to explore the Wild And Wonderful World Of The Ultimate In Flesh Eating Fungi, visit here. (No, it's not very gross at all.)

There is a single-file line of mushrooms, tall pale ones with broad caps,
in place on a steep grassy slope.
By themselves, seemingly. I drove past them the other day
and saw them out the car window -- one does a double take.
Fellow Mudcatter Senoufou who would know more than I know
suggests that a tree root well below view
is probably going down that steep hill
and has attracted the mushrooms.

The thing I love about William MacGonagal is that when he has a moral point to prove....and he usually does...he is willing to go ON and ON and ON about it in the most repetitive and stupefying manner, heedless of meter or grammar, impassioned to a point that would make cold stone idols weep, making sure to hammer home his righteous concerns in terms so utterly incapable of being misconstrued that only a monster, a witless idiot or a person of irredeemable evil would DARE to stand forth and question his irrefutable conclusions!!!!!!!!!!!

Heroic stuff, to be sure. I only wish I had seen him performing live with my own eyes back when he was in his prime. The world has lost....well....it has lost something, that's for sure.

MacGonagal wrote better doggerel than that, Amos. Not much better, I'll grant, but still...here is his impassioned defense of the Suffragettes:

Women’s Suffrage

Fellow men! why should the lords try to despise
And prohibit women from having the benefit of the parliamentary Franchise ?
When they pay the same taxes as you and me,
I consider they ought to have the same liberty.

And I consider if they are not allowed the same liberty,
From taxation every one of them should be set free;
And if they are not, it is really very unfair,
And an act of injustice I most solemnly declare.

Women, farmers, have no protection as the law now stands;
And many of them have lost their property and lands,
And have been turned out of their beautiful farms
By the unjust laws of the land and the sheriffs’ alarms.

And in my opinion, such treatment is very cruel;
And fair play, ’tis said, is a precious jewel;
But such treatment causes women to fret and to dote,
Because they are deprived of the parliamentary Franchise vote.

In my opinion, what a man pays for he certainly should get;
And if he does not, he will certainly fret;
And why wouldn’t women do the very same?
Therefore, to demand the parliamentary Franchise they are not to blame.

Therefore let them gather, and demand the parliamentary Franchise;
And I’m sure no reasonable man will their actions despise,
For trying to obtain the privileges most unjustly withheld from them;
Which Mr. Gladstone will certainly encourage and never condemn.

And as for the working women, many are driven to the point of starvation,
All through the tendency of the legislation;
Besides, upon members of parliament they have no claim
As a deputation, which is a very great shame.

Yes, the Home Secretary of the present day,
Against working women’s deputations, has always said- nay;
Because they haven’t got the parliamentary Franchise-,
That is the reason why he does them despise.

And that, in my opinion, is really very unjust;
But the time is not far distant, I most earnestly trust,
When women will have a parliamentary vote,
And many of them, I hope, will wear a better petticoat.

And I hope that God will aid them in this enterprise,
And enable them to obtain the parliamentary Franchise;
And rally together, and make a bold stand,
And demand the parliamentary Franchise throughout Scotland.

And do not rest day nor night-
Because your demands are only right
In the eyes of reasonable men, and God’s eyesight;
And Heaven, I’m sure, will defend the right.

Therefore go on brave women! and never fear,
Although your case may seem dark and drear,
And put your trust in God, for He is strong;
And ye will gain the parliamentary Franchise before very long.

I didn't have to go far, they are on some backyard hardwood trees felled this summer. The most bizarre thing to me about them are on the ring of orange color - when the fungus dries out a cryptic tiny alphabet appears that looks readable but is not. I have kept compelling examples of these from years past. When dry they are hard beige and tan.
The cryptic printing is dark brown. If pressed I would judge the letters to look like small case Greek.

Amos, repairing your instruments with a bandsaw should only be done by professionals. I know you're handy, but why not let an experienced luthier repair the inlaid D-45 that BB King gave you? You know what happened the last time, when you decided to use a belt sander on the bottom of the sound box.

Be careful picking your fungi. All sorts of bad things can happen to the unknowing. I once picked a morel-like mushroom with what looked like tar on it while waiting for my mother to pick me up from work. It was stinkhorn (Phallus impudicus and P. Hadriani are commonest) and we drove home with the fungus being held outside the window. I put it in a tightly-lidded jar and brought it to my botany teacher the next day. He didn't open the jar, but did say, "Stinks like a dead horse, doesn't it?" I gave it to him.

These are edible, if you really want to eat them.

Its only a mist outside and a good time to troop through the woods and see what is growing. Morels are not likely without fires around here but chicken of the woods should be available in 100 lbs lots. Care is taken since angel of death shrooms show up here.

Way up on blind river it began to rain
where no one could see.
Down in the lowlands the roads of water
rose to an inland sea.
Shane didn't mind the rain until utterly drunk
he fell in a gutter
He floated half drowned for miles and
slammed into the dam with a shudder.
She was about to break when Shane called
the tavern in town
"if ya could dump some bottles in the gutter
she'll make a damn good
trip all the way down to the damn dam"
They put 2 & 2 together
and that's how Shane saved the town

We need a similar song for Shane McBride to help raise him out of a deadly hangover after another lost weekend of feckless partying and debauchery. It happens pretty regularly. There isn't a lot to do in Blind River.

He went down one September in a pourin' drivin' rain
Mom she had been drinkin' and Amos felt no pain,
Too close to mighty Florence when he felt the awful blow
And poor old Amos Jessup settled low.

There were just his sibs about him when he finally was a-slosh,
We worked like hell to save him, and never mind the cost!
But the moan he gave as he fell down it caused us to proclaim
That the mighty Amos Jessup'd stand again!

CH.: Stand again! Stand again!
So his name it won't be sullied in the mem'ry of [wo]men
All those who cared a lot and saw him land on his end
Will help the mighty Amos Jessup rise again!
