You would be so welcome. But I must say, I fear your arrival would bring cold weather down from the wicked Northland. Mind over matter, I suppose. You would have to do a voluntary deep attitude adjustment at the border.

Great idea. I think it's time Amos had the full benefit of our friendship and company for a sustained period, and I could also stand to get out of this damned winter weather for a bit.

I have no fear of a bare Arctic floor, sir; my ass has been chapped so often these last eight years it is now firmly calloused and thermally insensitive, and impregnable too.

Take away his pants and make him sit on a bare Arctic floor.

That's a fascinating theory, Rapaire! I would love to be Shatner's illegitimate offspring. Better yet, his legitimate offspring, but alas, that is beyond reach. I feel that we are somehow connected by a soul link that goes far deeper than mere genetic inheritance...but genetic inheritance would nonetheless be the icing on the cake, wouldn't it?

Amos, your description of my spartan living space is generous and compassionate. You are truly a kind soul with the best of intentions. When next I hold one of my little soirees by candlelight, I shall be certain to invite you, and I'll even get an orange crate brought in specially for the occasion. A man of your merits should not be expected to sit on a bare attic floor, after all!

You'd have to find them to prove that one, Rapaire!! LOL

DNA "fingerprinting" should end all doubt, as well as determine his relationship to Billy Shatner (I think that LH is really William Shatner's unacknowledged illegitimate son, the product of a night of passion under the tropic palms of Northern Ontario).

Or blood-typing. I like the idea of sampling the blood.

And you'll know it's in his hand because you can take the prints off the fingers, correct?

"When next I have a party, Amos, I shall be quite sure not to invite you. "

So when he next has three people over to his one-bedroom walkup apartment to have a beer and sit around on the orange crates and the slightly scuffed garage sale sofa, chewing on old Fritos, why, I expect to find a sheet of yellow lined paper in the mail with an invitation inscribed thereon in Little Hawk's inimitable hand.

To a burial at sea?

Well, okay, the next time I hear of one.

Say, would a burial at river work? Ugly Ulysses croaked the other day and following his wishes he's going to sort of be buried in the Portneuf River. I say "sort of" because following his wishes he was bronzed and will be more erected than actually buried. The Legion is in charge of the ceremonies and the "feast" following and C-G Smyte-Withers herself will be there to ensure that a) the statue is erected with UU's head up so that he doesn't scare the fish and, b) blank ammunition is used by the firing part -- she doesn't want a repeat of the last time, about which the less said the better.

Let me know and I'll get you an invitation to the "feast" and a ticket to the ceremonies.

I really MUST share this wonderful story of Canadian familial loyalty:

Micheal and Jimmy had promised their uncle George, who had been a seafaring man all his life, to bury him at sea when he died. In due time, he did pass away and the boys planned to keep their promise.

They set off with Uncle George all stitched up in a burial bag and loaded into their rowboat. After a while Micheal says, 'Do yer tink dis is fer 'nuff out, Jimmy?'

Without a word Jimmy slips over the side only to find himself standing in water up to his knees. 'Dis'll never do, Micheal. Let's row out some more.'

After a bit more rowing Jimmy slips over the side again but the water is only upto his belly, so they row on. Again Micheal asks Jimmy, 'Do yer tink dis is fer 'nuff out Jimmy?'

Once again Jimmy slips over the side and almost immediately says, 'No dis'll never do.' The water was only up to his chest.

So on they row and row and row and finally Jimmy slips over the side and disappears. Quite a bit of time goes by and poor Micheal is really getting himself into a state when suddenly Jimmy breaks the surface gasping for breath.

'Well is it deep 'nuff yet, Jimmy?'

'Aye it 'tis bye, hand me da shovel.'

God is my witness, Little Hawk, you have me all wrong!! I am innocent!! I am no wet blanket, nor literal minded. I just feel, given our history here, that I am duty bound to come up with some quash, deflect, rejoin, poke, tickle, embarrass or counter to your seeping strokes of fantasy. It is my job in Mom's house; I am Mom's gadfly and puncturer, her dry-witted hat-pin, her epée de raison propre, if you will. Imagine, what would you think of me if I failed to rally and parry when you posted some silly piece of fantasmagoria? You'd think I had a fever or was off my feed, for certain!!

He insists on being dead literal and oh, so serious about everything too...and he never indulges in any fantasies...well, any except his own, that is.

Those mountains of laundry, did they grow while you were away? Have you checked to see if you have squatters living under the back sundeck, throwing their dirty laundry into your house when you're not looking?

I'm sorry, Tuchman's book is entitled "The MARCH of Folly."

Amos, the long silence had much more to do with a good night's sleep than anything else.

Besides, I'm on a public coomputer at a motel in Twin Falls -- just a little romantic get-away for Pat and me.

We'll be slowly wending our way back home very shortly, and facing a mountain of laundry when we get there.

And, of course, there's work tomorrow....

As for books, I am working through a slow, rich reconstruction of life in the 1880-1910 period in the east Florida coast Thousand Islands region. A beautiful and evocative job of reconstructing the historical, the linguistic and the personal threads of the time and space, it is called "Killing MIster Watson" by Peter Matthisen. The writing--the choosing of metaphor and tone and twang and rhythm--is very impressive.

I'm struggling to merge the old with the new technology-wise. I've found a new little mp3 that is low end as far as what Amos is toting around, but is much higher grade than the little ones we were trying to make-do with. Now I want it to arrange the chapters properly and not do a William Burroughs shuffle as I "read" a murder mystery.

But my shelves are lined with books that won't be reduced to audio versions, books that I take pleasure in reading myself. Perhaps I should record these for others. . .

DOn't be asinine, I beg you. You are tilting at straw windmills. This, in you, is both unkind and unfair. I said it was a new plateau, which is correct, but is NOT--as you would have it--a teleological statement, which would be impossible in the context.

I'm researching the influence of movable type upon the Renaissance and Reformation. William Manchester's book "A World Lit Only By Fire" got me started.

Excellent, well-reasoned book. I recommend it.

You might also enjoy Barbara Tuchman's "In Search Of Folly". It deals with the Reformation, but it also deals with those who feel that an iPhone is the be-all and end-all of technology.

Stilly, I just finished reading an adventure/thriller type of book by Stephen Hunter called "47th Samurai". It was lent to me by a friend who knows I like stuff about Japan. It's a well written adventure, but extremely bloody. Maybe a bit too bloody for my taste. However, I did find it pretty good reading and interesting.

Now I am re-reading Eckhart Tolle's book "A New Earth" which is excellent. That's much more typical of what I would usually read.

I cannot answer for mass culture, which has definitely gravitated in McLuan's way. But I can say that holding the power to exchange amongst those with whom one chooses to communicate--not those to whom one must communicate in order to dramatize McLuan's Complex, a phrase I just invented for an addiction to electronic signals--is a comfort and a strength. Like all things, the beauty f it is in the eye of the beholder.

I think of MOAB as a thing of a certain kind of beauty, even though the average viewer would be hard put to name it.

Are you familiar with the work of Shannon and Weaver in communications?

When does communication itself become noise? When does the gadget become the communication? (And don't give me "The medium is the message" because that is neither the title of McLuhan's work or what he was trying to convey.)

I do not have an iPhone, but I've played around a bit on my daughter's. She has an instrument tuner application that would be great if only she could figure out how to use it. She also has an application that turns the iPhone into a spirit level. That would be cool to have since I can never find my regular spirit level when we're at art fairs and I need to level my display shelves. And being able to get song lyrics on the fly is neat. When she visited at Christmas we wanted to do J.P.'s "Christmas in Prison" and she Googled the lyrics up. My 57 year-old eyes couldn't read the itty bitty font, but her 28 year-old eyes could, and she was doin' the singin' on that one anyway.

Unlike blogs, text messages, and "r u thr d00d" incomprehensibility. Well, I shan't make judgements but when I want to enjoy the silence of the mountains or listen to the sea rush to shore I turn my cell phone off and even, sometimes, forget to turn it back on.
