Last night was a bear. Just a goddamned bear. This morning is better. I am off to seek medical wisdom. I have had enough of this.

Cloisters, perhaps? I dunno.

I guess Amos knows what is up if he has a twin. Evil or otherwise. Get over the coughing soon, my friend!

I think "Evil Twin" probably meant "clysters" and not "clusters." But who knows? I've been involuntarily involved in more than a few clusters myself.

I gave it to him. A present. I cannot enjoy anything while he's enjoying anything. But my timing was off for he was to get sick in Ireland and be treated with emetics and clusters by an incompetent veterinarian in Ballynapucha. Damn!

I am getting on, still tweaking fucking pictures from glorious Irish vacation. Rather do it than review it, I can say that. I am still coughing like a half-breed pony in the rain, but I think I am getting better. This is the kind of experience for which the great poets of language and our forefather authors of wisdom immortalized the timeless phrase, "I hate this shit!".

gnu's in the lead with Acme running a descent second while Rapparee is a distant third. Ague Amos was scrubbed earlier as coming up lame. Chongo, or whatever the fuck he calls him/herself today, never showed, to the delight of the track goers so it's anybody's race really. There was talk of a late entry by one of the favourites, BWL, but it seems BWL's jockey may actually have a life. As we come into the final stretch, gnu pulls up short and simply canters over to the barley bar and his jockey orders a drink. gnu was heard to neigh (translated), "Run? In this heat? Fuck that shit. I'll have Gibson's Finest straight up with a Bud chaser."

"How's the aching ague, Amos?" he asked again.

Who needs alcohol? Is there such a thing as a sugar hangover? We had lots of extra desserts arrive for yesterday's small dinner with a few friends. There was a little booze mixed in, but it was mostly just food. MOM is snoring gently on the couch right now - taking a morning nap after getting up late.

Maybe some Gosling's Black Seal or almost overproof anything except Bacardi and Captain Morgan. Of course, good rum doesn't need to be overproof.

Yes, Lamb's Navy might work. London Dock is finer, IMO, but not much "black" as is customary. If I was a young man again, I would convene a panel with Alfred of Amber, Old Sam and The Captain. We'd sup and eat brown bread slathered with butter and molasses and convene again in a couple of days after we had recovered to decree... what the fuck were we on about again? Amos? Amos who? Has he been properly Screeched In?

I have my own trouble with regular aunts, so I don't need the fire type. Take my Aunt Thecla now -- she drank six quarts of freshly made lemonade every day, no sugar, and it made her into the sourest person you ever met but I must admit that she didn't have scurvy even once in her 107 year alive. She once looked at a cardinal that was singing his little heart out in her backyard and that look knocked him down dead. Took 20+ years to clear it with the Vatican and a whopping big donation to Peter's Pence...bankrupted the family for prit near two decades. Or Aunt Elly, who became a nun and ended up teaching other nuns how to discipline the pupils they were teaching; she learned it from her great-great grandfather who was torturer-in-chief to some Russian czar or somebody. Or Aunt Helen, who flew helicopters for me. No, keep your fire aunts. I've enough aunts.

Aha! A point made on the organic gardening program I listen to: fire ants (an invasive species) keep chiggers and ticks out of the area. So if you want to get rid of chiggers or ticks, I can send you some fire ants to start your own invasive colony.

You're welcome.

Approximately 10 kilograms of those two isotopes constitutes critical mass. In short, you would be equal to about 340 kilotons of TNT, or 34 Nagasaki-sized fission bombs, or about 48,400 terajoules. You are one powerful dude!

gnu, 174.8 kilograms is 385.37 pounds, or 27.5 stone, or an atomic mass unit of 1.052669487 x 1029. If you're 5 feet 8.5 inches tall (the average height of Canadian males), that gives you a Body Mass Index of 56.9 on the US National Institutes of Health scale, or WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY too morbidly obese. So you better whack off some of that body mass (i.e., weight). Remember, if your body was Pu239 or U235 you would have long ago achieved critical mass and pretty much all of New Brunswick and part of Maine would be radioactive and the US and Canada would have been/probably be involved in a nuclear war and it would be/have been YOUR fault. And don't tell me Canada doesn't have nukes -- I know who supplies the yellowcake and it ain't Betty Crocker.

There are many more photographs, but they were seized by the Garda as licentious, objectionable, obscene, and contributory to the immoralisation of both the young and the aged and those between. They are being very carefully studied and charges are pending.

Three -- 3! -- inches of snow! That's 7.62 centimeters. 0.164654226 Greek cubits! 5.093655387 x 10-13 AU! 0.000378788 furlongs! 4,320 twip! A Planck length of 4.715200644 x 1033! And that's at 7,984 feet!

Elk'll be coming down off the mountain now, bears'll be denning up, and soon a new cycle of life will begin again from the seeds of Autumn. Soon enough the mountain maple with mix its bright slash of crimson to the deep lemon yellow of the aspens and the mountainsides will again turn into become a riotous spectrum of colors, except in Canada where it will be a riotous spectrum of colours.

Ah, Autumn in the mountains! Where the last of the wannabe mountain climbers will find themselves trapped on a ledge at 10,000 feet and/or dead of hypothermia or falling off a cliff, their bodies to remain until what is left can be gathered in the Spring. Where flat-land hunters will pass out from anoxyia because they didn't all enough time to become accustomed to a lower oxygen level and by doing so contribute a few days' residency to our local hospital and find they must sell their hunting gear to pay for part of their stay.

And then Winter comes. No more bikini-clad bimbos finding the back country swarms with mosquitoes. No more 65 foot "Class A motorhomes" failing to make hairpin turns on gravel roads that make a mountain goat pale at the thought of negotiating them. Not until Spring will one again hear the whine, "But dear, I didn't KNOW that the Rocky Mountains were, you know, MOUNTAINS!"

Thanks for the correction; I would hate to do a typographical disservice to such a gent. Turns out as well he is an old friend of Mai's, who charmed us all at the Getaway last year with her blithe spirit.

Rapparree's point about WiFi is generally well taken--you can find it in pubs and hostels all over the country and at one point they had a Dublin-wide city WiFi which was bolloxed up in the installation and discontinued. But out on the water, no such luck. Barely able to get cell coverage.

I have to say that I am doomed, now, to return to Ireland again and again. Next year, Westport and the west coast, I think. If I were not such a lazy sod, basically, I'd be taking up Irish language studies. :D

Thanks again for the charming visit to our little boat! There are some pictures on my Facebook page -- only a fraqction of the hundreds--that you might enjoy.

A

Glad it went well! Again, my apologies for only managing a flying visit as you settled in to the boat.

I knew Sean's Bar very well - and the eponymous Seán himself, indeed. A pub of great character and history. If I remember correctly, a historian friend of mine located the documents that established its claim to the "oldest pub" tag under its old name of "The Three Blackamoors Heads".

Regards

P.S. That would have been Kevin ROWSOME you met in The Cobblestone - just to avoid confusion.

Friday we wandered through the highs and lows of Dublin City to a wee fine old pub called The Cobblestone, and who should file into the pub while we were sipping porter there but the very man himself, Kevin Rowan, heir and master of the legacy of five generations of Uillean piping. His wife and two granddaughters and he set up with flute, half-pipes, fiddle and concertina and proceeded to light up the place with the finest of jigs, reels and hornpipes. Kevin Rowan one the Oirechatas Festival first place award in 1991, the same which is great great-uncle had one a hundred years before. Talk about the stream down the generations. Then in came an old granny, no relation, with a fine bodhran and she chimed in in perfect time with a wicked tipple. Then another young man with a guitar gently chimed in to support the magic. What an afternoon! If we hadn't been due to catch the train to Sandycove we would have stayed the day out just for the toe-tapping music.

have spent the last week exploring the River Shannon, the great silver water that runs down through the center of Ireland. My means of exploration was a 30-foot barge-shaped cruising boat, purpose designed for rivers and canals, and the two of us were thrilled and delighted with every turn we took, from Athlone's Killinure Point north to Carrick, east to Lough Key and the strange castle that sits on an islet there, north to the beautiful village of Leitrim, and then south again through Rosskey, Tarmonbarry, Lanesborough and back across the wide Lough Ree to our home base at Quigley's Marina.

Then we spent two deliriously fine days traipsing across Dublin thanks to a dear friend who knows every turn of Irish history by heart. We took the light rail down to Sandycove, where--be still my heart!--we climbed the very steps of Joyce's Tower where stately plump Buck Mulligan once carried his shaving dish to intone the blessing of the sea over his morning ablutions.

In Athlone I had the rare treat of singing and playing for a grand gathering of spirited Irish folk in the oldest pub in Ireland, Sean's yclept, reputedly founded in 900 AD.

Here's to the Irish, God bless them high and low.
