My Dear Sirs,

Unless you are completely familiar with the dialect from which Idahoan derived, you are pissing in your hats. The Northernmost quadrant of the Western half of East South Eastern Midlands Middle English dialect bears almost no resemblance to the dialect of Chaucer. Indeed, it is so obscure that it rarely deviates into sense (as John Dryden so cunningly put it, although he was describing something else). Coupling that with the natural evolution of language, environmental factors necessitating changes, and the general demands of daily communication generate such contemporary sentiments as "YEEEEEEEEEEE-HAW! I'm a-bringin' them thpudth ta the KO-ral fer brandin'! Giddyup, Horthe!"

Please remember to empty your hats before returning them to your pates, and I remain,

Your humble and devoted thervant.

Right you are MM -- I was so incensed at the casual abuse of Ancient Lingo that I made two errors in my post. "Doeth" had been mis-connected with third person plural (they). It correctly associates with third person singular (He doth protest o'ermuch....).

Even in Olde Myddle Idohoan?

But isn't "we" first person plural, not second?

Rapire:

Speaketh is third person singular, not second plural, Mister Rapaire. "Doeth" is a singular verb, spelled "doth", and does not take the third person or the infinitive construction. The "-eth" ending does not accompany gerunds or transient verb forms such as "awaiting".

Methinks the bullshiter doth protest too much!! For you see, his eyes are open!

(Aye, but their SENSE is shut!!).

Out here in Idaho we speaketh Middle English all the time, but then, this ith a pretty conthervative thtate. Jutht yethterday I wath thipping my horn of mead when thix Viking Bertherkerth tharted thwinging thwordth and axeth around. Fortunately, the polithe came and shot them with tranquilither dartth before they could doeth much damage. They are now in the County Gaol awaitingth execution.

And if you thinketh that ith harsh and cruel, you should theeth want they do to folkth who jaywalk.

You see, when I post to mudcat I translate from Idahoan -- a variant of the Northernmost quadrant of the Wester half of East South Eastern Midlands Middle English dialect -- to contemporary English. The above (a true happening) is representative of actual Idaho speech.

Pronunciation: kw?th or kw?th

v. t.
1.
Said; spoke; uttered; - used only in the first and third persons in the past tenses, and always followed by its nominative, the word or words said being the object; as, quoth I, quoth he.

As BWL says, from an archaic Old English verb no longer in use.

Actually, "quoth" is the past tense of the Middle English verb "quethen". "Quoth" has remained in the language while "quethen" has dropped out.

totally OT (even for MOAB) - but I'm wondering if Corridus is perhaps related to the hamster that J. Kerry performed CPR on?

So, if "quoth" is strictly a past tense verb that has no present tense form, is it unique? Can anyone think of any other verbs that don't have a present tense?

By the way, congrats to SRS for posting #4200 which is, of course, "the answer X 100". Hmmm.... Perhaps the question has something to do with "quoth". Perhaps if we truly understand "quoth" we'll be able to fly and generate "Somebody Else's Problem" fields and.... Nah!

First panel, Skylar, the young bird, talks to the elder editor bird:

Sky: Wow! We're gonna see the Ravens! I can't believe it!!!

Old bird: Wait here, Sky. I'm supposed to go back stage and interview their lead singer, Nigel Wrath.

Panel two, Old bird:
Excuse me! Nigel? Can I speak with you a second?

"Quoth" is a past tense verb. It means pretty much the same thing as "said". "Said" is the past tense of "say". So what's "quoth" the past tense of? Don't say it's "quote" because the past tense of "quote" is "quoted".

Dear Mom,

I got my brains from you. I got my genes from you. I got everything I have been, am, and will be from you. If you feel that I have become abtruse, or obtuse, or obfuscate, or those kinds of things, remember that I got it from you.

M is for the many things she taught me
O is for something like "obscure"
A is for the Absolute Nonsense posted
B is for BS, it's always pure.

Put them all together they spell MOAB,
Which hardly rhymes with anything except "Boab,"
A tree not found around here much at all!

That song always brings tears to my eyes and those of my audience.

No, GUEST, I only post here when it's necessary to defend myself from slander. Like when someone says I quoth. Other than that I just let my loyal children take care of things and they seem to be doing a pretty good job of it. Rapaire is rapidly becoming as obtuse, abstruse and indecipherable as Amos. Khandu comes and goes as he sees fit. Tweed doesn't come around as often as he used to, but he's still an idiot and I still love him. My only problem child is Little Hawk and he's not really a bad boy. He just likes to hang around with that Shatner character who, most emphatically, is not one of my children and is a bad influence on poor Little Hawk. Hopefully he'll grow out of it.

1961? In September I started my third year of high school by having a minor operation on my left foot. This prevented me from having to take PE for the third year straight. The next year, my last, I just didn't go to PE class. Nobody said anything, since I had never gone to one anyway. Besides, I was in the Band and you didn't mess with the guys in the Band -- it was the only regularily scheduled co-ed activity in the all-boys high school I attended. The jocks let us along after a trombonist "accidentally" blew a sour note just as basketballer tossed a free throw -- caused him to miss, which got him in trouble with the coach.

Baller shouldn't have badmouthed the trombonist....

Okay, Mario. The movie in question is called "The Intruder" (1961) and starred Shatner as the character "Adam Cramer", a bigoted racist.

Here is the description and review:

Shatner delivers his best performance (actually winning a best actor award at an independent film festival) as a political agitator from "The Patrick Henry Society" (a la The John Birch Society) who incites mob violence in a Southern town to prevent integration. He's a racist, rabble-rousing, skirt-chasing bastard in this one, and Shatner plays it to the hilt. Roger Corman's only serious "message" movie and also the only movie that Corman admits lost money for him. Very good performances by the supporting cast.

Real townspeople were used as extras for crowd scenes, but when they discovered the film was pro integration, they nearly lynched Shatner and company, who had to make the rest of the movie in secret and often on the run. This eventually ended up being filmed in three or four small towns.

So. There you have it. In 1961 Bill was fighting the good fight for integration and risking his health by so doing. What were you doing in '61? I think you scoffers owe William Shatner an big apology, that's what I think. So there!

There's a complete list and description of EVERY movie that Shatner was ever in, with a review of his performance. You can find some pretty obscure (and bad) movies on that list, plus a few good ones. You can also find some rather good reviews of his performances, and some bad ones, depending. Interesting. He actually won the "best actor" award from some private film critiquing organization for a movie in the early 60's which the reviewer says is definitely his finest performance. How about that?
