So where is everyone this weekend? Say, did you hear on NPR about the glowing water, the fog? I think those ralfs are closer than you think.

You mean this one?, a little river in a pretty area of the Scottish Borders And the Whiteadder as well

They're a little way North of Coldstream, which has a famous guards regiment, and a river. The names are so original, ne pas?

Har! We're closing in on the 10,000th post. Har! That's when William Shatner will have the last word and put an end to this sorry thread. Har! I'm gonna be there to see it. Har! It will be great fun. Har! I love being Ralphs. Har! Shatner rules. Har!

Now we have got a namless Guest saying nice things! What is the world coming to?

If buttercups buzz'd after the bee,
If boats were on land, churches on sea,
If ponies rode men and if grass ate the cows,
And cats should be chased into holes by the mouse,
If the mamas sold their babies
To the gypsies for half a crown;
If summer were spring and the other way round,
Then all the world would be upside down.

Ah--I was in a hurry to copy it over. But that line would be
He offered his fin and she took it,
such a gentleman none can dispute,

(I think. It has been a long time since I sang this one).

And you mistake my interest. It isn't my goal to bag that number, it is my goal to discourage poaching by the likes of Flamingo Ted and daylia, of late, who only came by to bag a number.

So they took her aboard in a jiffy
And the shark stood at attention the while,
Then he raised on his flipper
And ate up the skipper
And went on his way with a smile.

And this shows that the prince of the ocean,
To ladies forbearing and mild,
Though his record be dark,
Is the man-eating shark
Who will eat neither woman nor child

Then he proffered his fin and she took it-
While the passengers cheered
As the vessel they neared
And a broadside was fired in salute.

And they soon stood alongside the vessel,
When a life-saving dinghy was lowered
With the pick of the crew,
And her relatives too,
And the mate and the skipper aboard.

. . .

She struggled and flounced in the water
And signaled in vain for her bark,
And she'd surely been drowned
If she hadn't been found
By a chivalrous man-eating shark.

He bowed in a manner most polished.
Thus soothing her impulses wild:
"Don't be frightened," he said,
I've been properly bred
And I eat neither woman nor child."

A doctor, a lawyer, a preacher,
He'll gobble one any fine day,
But the ladies, God bless 'em.
He'll only address 'em
Politely and go on his way.

l can readily cite you an instance
Where a lovely young lady of Breem,
Who was tender and sweet
And delicious to eat,
Fell into the bay with a scream.

I've had this song stuck in my head the last couple of days:

CHIVALROUS SHARK
(Wallace Irwin)

The most chivalrous fish of the ocean,
To ladies forbearing and mild,
Though his record be dark
Is the man-eating shark
Who will eat neither woman nor child.

He dines upon seamen and skippers,
And tourists his hunger assuage,
And a fresh cabin boy
Will inspire him with joy
If he's past the maturity age.

I didn't call him a ralph, because he didn't say "Har!", but he wasn't a particularly pleasant person. I quoted Dr. Seuss at him and I think that upset him ("And the big Kangaroo said 'me too!'") after a couple of people posted on the same topic. There was a guy who agreed with me, but his post was so odd that I wasn't sure who he was scolding, hence my quote. The first guy I think wasn't sure what to make of that part of it. :)

This may be an instance where you had to be there.

Mom, it's getting time for a little hand-holding. Darn, but it's late again.

I seem to have picked a fight with a member of my gardening discussion list. (!) I made a simple remark that 'although I didn't support the man or his politics, I was interested to know if the Bush family had organic or other environmental operations going at the ranch in Crawford.' Several of us discussed what we knew about the design and organics, then a guy came in, not to say anything about organics, but to highlight my position on Bush and say he hoped we weren't going to start down the road of making political remarks in this site blah blah blah. I told him politics is part of life and I had restrained myself admirably. He sent a private message telling me he spent good money to join the site for the organic information and didn't want to see the politics. I wrote back and told him he only complained because he supported Bush, otherwise he wouldn't care. I called him petty to interrupt a perfectly good conversation to say his piece. (I could have accused him of being MG or Beardedbruce or one of our other arguers, but then I'd have had to explain myself. . . well anyway, I see that I have another private message from him.

What are the odds that he's going to say "Actually, I oppose Bush, but I don't want to start a landslide of Bush-bashing threads here at our gardening site and forgive me for making a fuss."

Yeah. I should open it and post his remarks here.

As any Bush gangster knows, truth in such an attack has nothing to do with anything; there is no defense if one IS as labeled, and if one is NOT as labeled, one is likely to be so labeled anyway, especially if the accuser repeats himself often and loudly.

Obviously Raedwulf should get over here and defend against being labeled a "Ralf."

Assuming that Raedwulf actually isn't one. Even if Raedwulf is a Ralf, a defense is in order. Who would ever want to be associated with that bunch?

Okay, here goes a totally nonscholarly attempt at the folk origins of "dipshit."

1. Night soil removers are colloquially called "honey dippers" (see, for example, the term "honey pot").

2. This also applies to those who empty septic tanks ("honey dipper" was seen on the trucks of several septic tank maintenance companies in both Indiana and Maryland and to my certain knowledge the term is used in speech elsewhere as well).

3. In the past, those who removed night soil did so using a cart, barrels, and long-handled implements resembling ladles or dippers.

4. In no community that I know of was this considered a particularily "high end" job (although it was, and continues to be, a very necessary job).

5. Because of #4, those employed in the trade were not the best of the area's citizens.

6. Because of the implements used (see #3), the term "shit dippers" would be an obvious term for those in the trade.

7. "Dipshit" is more in the line of "folk poetry" and sound more harmonious than "shit dipper." Besides, "shit dipper" could be confused with "shitepoke", a common name for various herons.

QED, as we used to say at Cambridge.

Good Lord, Amos! I heard the term "dip shit" as long ago as 1959. "Dip" is also listed in the "1811 Dictionary of the Vulgar Tongue" -- there are four references there to "Dip" "The Dip" "Dippers" and "Dipt," the second last refering to Anabaptists. Chapman's "Thesaurus of American Slang" (1989) lists as synonyms for "dipshit" the words "asshole" "crummy" "dope" and "jerk." For "dip" it lists "asshole" "dope" "heist man" "junkie" "nut" and "sleazebag." It lists "crazy" and "ditsy" as synonyms for "dippy."

"Dipshit" does not appear in Partridge's "Shakespeare's Bawdy."

There are many ways to lose face in the world, and one learns to deal with most of them through the course of a lifetime:

MSNBC reports on an exception:

Woman loses face in encounter with seal
Beast gives seal of disapproval to assistance, bites off South African's nose
Updated: 4:52 p.m. ET Oct. 31, 2005

JOHANNESBURG - A seal bit off a South African woman's nose after she tried to help it back into the sea, an official said Monday.

Elsie van Tonder, 49, is expected to undergo surgery this week after being bitten on a beach near George, about 400 kilometers (240 miles) east of Cape Town on Saturday.

Her nose was found but could not be reattached to her face, local media reported.

I guess the real world -- including seals -- doesn't understand how helpful some people would be, if only you would let them... :D

If you're looking for dippy songs, Mudcat's own Blackcatter has a site that provided the following:

The end of the Civil War was near when quite accidentally,
A hero who sneezed abruptly seized retreat and reversed it to victory.

His medal of honor pleased and thrilled his proud little family group.
While pinning it on some blood was spilled and so it was planned he'd command F-Troop.

Where Indian fights are colorful sights & nobody takes a lickin'
Where pale face and redskin both turn chicken.

When killing and fighting get them down, they know their morale can't droop.
As long as they all relax in town before they resume with a bang and a boom F-Troop.
