Most things are.

But surely, you had to open the doors for all that grimness to find its way into your creative channels. That's something you have to take personal responsibility for, you know...

I knew a former nurse, years back, who shot herself over just such a thing. The nurses and medics may have had it worst of all. So I wrote "Jesse" as sort of a tribute and, perhaps, in hope that people might understand.

In the original it was even grimmer.

I do believe you, good sir, and it is a fine piece you wrote for her.

This is the thing, Rapaire. What you wrote doesn't qualify as bullshit.

Well, anything involving the Legion certainly qualifies as B.S. Or, at least as some sort of S.

I think that you should know that the Genuine and Warranted Marching and Stumbling Band and Symphony Orchestra of Idaho Legion (GWMSBSOIL, or "that bunch")is practicing for their more-or-less annual Holiday Concert. The program should be a humdinger, and here it is, as printed:

The National Anthem
Medley: Allegro from "Water Music"/"I'm A Little Pee Pot"
Something from Vivaldi or one of those Eyetalians
Ives: Little White Duck
More Handel: Haillaylouya Chorus
Anonymous: Come Landlord Fill The Flowing Bowel
Billy The Kid -- Sweet!
Something from one of them Bachs
Anonymous: The Bastard King of England
Schumann: Trauma Tree (bagpipe solo)
Medley of songs and stuff over at Christmas Carol's place

Tickets to this diverse musical offering are still available at outrageous prices, but it's a "buy one, get all the rest you want for free" sale.

I may have to pick up a ticket - I love their rendition of 'Stumble Puke and Trip and Fall"

Now THAT's what I call the spirit of Christmas.

In all fairness, I should point out that they haven't yet decided upon which country's national anthem will be played. Last I heard it was a tossup between Canada and The Duchy of Grand Fenwick, with a very vocal minority holding out for Barsoom.

Barsoom isn't a united country. They'd have to choose between the Anthem for Greater Helium, lesser Helium or the ritual chants of the Thark.

Thank god we have an expert around to keep things straight. I vote for the ritual chants of the Thark as probably more confortable for the Legionaires to sing along with.

I submitted the MOAB thread to the "Blog Readability Test" on a different thread. After grinding away it came up with a message "Something went wrong." I suspect is isn't equipped to fathom the depth and the breadth of this particular thread. And it probably trips up on the humor and html also . . .

I recently chose at random from among the great crop of blue numbers on the top of this page; as it happened, I lighted on 298. It brought up an ancient section of the MOAB in which BWL, Teresa, Rustic Rebel, SRS, and I were babbling about holotropes, synecdoches, and "42".

All I can say is, this thread is an amazing collection of riches. Just wunnerful, a historical archive rivalling the Smithsonian itself, the Library of Congress, the Richard Milhouse Nixon Presidential Repository, and several other great national repositories of really obscure convoluted outpourings.

Sigh. Some day, reality will come a-calling with a huge "Overdue" bill notice in its ugly hand. Fortunately, I have a final "Declaration of Realruptcy" from the Court of Last Resorts ready to use in my defense...(It's kinda like going bankrupt, except it is your stock of any strong sense of reality that is diminished, rather than just your bank account...)

A true, albeit strange, story:

Last night I was sitting here at Pat's PC, trying to figure out what was wrong, when the phone rang.

It was my nephew, Joe, who's in the Marines. The telephone in his room in the barracks (!) had just been hooked up and he called me. Not his parents, me, his uncle in Idaho.

Now, this wouldn't be too strange in itself (he fights with his father all the time), except that

Joe is stationed at MCAS Iwakuni, about 25 miles from Hiroshima, Japan.

We talked, on his nickel, for about a half hour. I have the phone numbers to both his cell phone and his room, should I want to call him. I also have his address.

He's about the age of SRS's daughter...hmmmm....

My life is full of stuff like that, Amos. Why, just last evening Jake "Bo-Peep" Scheissenhelm confided to me that he was going to sing several things at the Holiday Concert that That Bunch is planning to put on. His part of the program will consist of a medley composed of

I've Got Ewe Under My Skin
(I Know I'll Never Find) Another Ewe
The Ballad of Desert Bleat
Bonny Hieland Lamby
The Rocks of Baaaa

Since Bo-Peep sings in several keys at the same time while playing the nose flute his appearanc should be met with applause and trepidation, especially if his sinus problems are acting up again.

I would think that would be the worst possible time to play the nose flute. Unless he is really dedicated to projecting phlegmboyance.

"No, to hell with him. I sent him an e-spersion."

Sidestepped a little glitch in the roof this morning--my electrician was able to get away from a list of jobs and come disconnect the attic fan. I didn't want the roofers to encounter a hot line, nor did I want them to have to leave it dangling in the attic (we're taking out that fan and putting in a ridge fan instead). So Duffy and Moses came over to disconnect that fan and we ran that wire over to a point nearby and turned it into an outlet. I didn't have any in the attic (it isn't finished up there, but that doesn't mean I never have anything to plug in if I'm working up there.)

ETA on shingles--sometime today, to be stacked in the driveway. Tomorrow--old roof will be torn off, new roof installed. Painting to start next week--I'm so excited at the new look we'll create, warm colors instead of stark ugly ones. Yesss!

Probably gonna get it done in the Spring. We have to arrange a little matter of financing first.

I think that bright orange shingles striped with black shingles (to honor the local University) might be a nice touch. No resale value, however....

I'm sitting here listening to the the pitter patter of little squirrel feet and their quarrelsome squawks as they feud over which family gets to settle in what segment of the walls for the winter.

When I get bored with that, I can go into the living room and watch the water drip into the bucket from the latest leak in the roof, as we get a rare rain. I wish the drips were a bit more rhythmic.

Don't it make you feel nostalgic already, Maggie?

Is that good? Is it at STP? What is it up where I live? Is that only for Australian water, or does it work for other water? What would it be if I changed the water into wine? Does it hold true if the water is in its vaporous form? Is it true for "heavy water" as well as plain old light water? And couldn't something be done to reduce some of this tension the water is under? Or would it then be under water?

Lordy, Janie, inquiring minds need to know!

There's a bucket in the attic to catch any rain before it dribbles down through the ceiling into my office. I caught it the first time it leaked and it came through at a ceiling vent so it didn't stain the office ceiling. I've had my fingers crossed that I could get this fixed before there was collateral damage.

No shingles this afternoon. Tomorrow morning, perhaps? And that is supposed to be a "ridge VENT," not a ridge fan. I do inspect work, but the fortunate thing about this project is that all of the workman and contractors are known to me. We have a history. When I moved in here 5 1/2 years ago I knew that I wanted this contractor to do the remodeling, I didn't get second opinions. I'd seen his work at a neighbor's when he did a couple of major projects for her. And his sub-contractors are good. The roofer is the same guy who put the roof on the garage when we built it. Now he's tearing that one off and redoing all roofs (so they match and so the insurance company won't prorate my discount, etc.). The electrician I met through him, and they've been back for several small jobs. The only one new to me is the gutter guy, but he seems like a very personable young many, and his price is quite reasonable. He was recommended by one of the roofing companies I didn't select for the job, but I think the recommendation was based upon the salesman's friendship and the competence of this guy.

The only prepayment in all of this is 15% of the cost for the shingles, to make it a little easier on the roofer when he purchases them. Everyone else will get paid when the job is over--but again, we have a history, they know they'll get paid promptly and in full.

Chances are also good that they'll get other jobs in this neighborhood, because my house is near a bridge, and there is limited access out of the village on this side. Traffic is relatively light, it's all residents, but they sometimes put on roofs and paint their houses. Quite a few people will no doubt remark on the work and I'll be sure to have a few extra business cards for any queries.

We hope to keep the squirrels out again this year. The first winter we had them running around in the attic. Little guys wearing clodhoppers, it sounded like. I climbed up around the soffits and put screen over the holes and that has worked.

Rapaire:

That's standard water at standard temp. Janie isn't in Australia, as far as I know...

The dyne is the amount of force needed to move 1 gram of an object 1 centimeter per second squared. The standard temp used is 20º C., and the dynes represent the force needed to break a film of one cm. in length. The surface tension of water decreases with temperature.

It is also true up where you live. You may be more familiar with a surface tension of 22.3, which is the value for ethyl alcohol.

Whether it's good or not depends on what you want to do. If you are in the business of changing water into wine, you probably also want to walk on water. You are going to need to lose weight, or at least redistribute your weight so that you exert no more than 72 dynes per centimeter, lower the temperature of the water, or do a combination of both. If you lower the temp to, say -10 c, you can forgo the diet. You might want to skate in stead of walk, though.

Australian water is down under, so it has no surface tension. That's why Jesus wasn't born in Australia. Even so, they manage to turn out some nice wines. They may use STP in their wines, but I doubt it. Unless they use wine to fill-up their gas tanks.

Excuse me, I have to go check the surface tension of the water dripping in the bucket behind me.

I think, (maybe it is best if I don't, but I do), that the surface tension is the same as it is the result of the cohesion of a single layer of molecules.

Funny name for a church, "Web Page Cannot Be Found." Does it mostly attract seekers?
