You think what a gecko can do is natural? Suction cup fingers is 'natural?' Hang out on a shiny slippery piece of glass and catch moths attracted by the light inside the room at night?

I thought only Gluon could actually do that. The rest is smoke and mirrors (and rubber cement on their feet).

Well, I dunno. I thought only humans could eb illegal in themselves. Have we gotten to the point of outlawing natch'l critters?

Some of us know that the labor this gecko does as far as eating pest bugs is useful. He's fed under the table. And the flower pots. And the leaf litter. . .

Your navel is hibernating?

Stilly - Did you check that gecko for a proper Visa/passport/green card? We all know the problem down in Texas w/ illegal immigrants and it is a Mediterranean gecko - not a Texas Gecko.

My dogs are hibernating today. It's cold and rainy again. But I have a non-hibernating Mediterranean house gecko in a salad dressing tub in the sun room. I found it lethargic on the door step yesterday. It warmed up on my hand, dropped it's tail, but wasn't warm enough overall to make it into it's usual spot (probably in the attic) when I tried to put it on the side of the house. So it's in the tub, with a couple of rocks to hide behind and a couple of meal worms for company or nosh, whichever it chooses. I'll let it go when it warms up again.

Well, it's the funnest thing that's happened to me since the last Getaway, is all. It's too chilly to kayak at dawn and work is not stimulating, and my novel is apparently hibernating.

Amos and his i-phone. At least he's not asking MOM to have text with him!

I am glad to welcome Friday. The fatigue-of-labor cycle is in its weekly closing phase. Tomorrow, Mom, I will be on the road to Palm Desert, but if you get desperate call my iPhone.

Yes, you did, but spellchecks often fail, especially in commercial nouns.

Regardless, since the map is not the territory, Mom should be happy even if it were misspelled.

Sorry, I was busy in the kitchen. Bread is baked, soup was hot, and we had a wonderful warm meal on this cold and rainy evening. I gave Mom some on that side table next to her barcalounger in front of the TV. She's watching her NetFlix DVDs tonight.

I used the Google spell check just now--I don't know if I have "barcalounger" spelled correctly. These are the suggestions it gave me after highlighting the word:

clanger
backlog
clunker
aqualung
belong

Bruce has set me straight on the Second Sun concept. It would add a prohibitive overhead to our carbon balance and ruin the temperature equation of the planet. But if we split the existing sun in half, maybe that would work?

Or I could just get more sleep at night.

Well, fine. My pointi s that if we had a uniform planetary daylight cycle, instead of the current rotary scheme, then people in Japan would work the same hours we do here, and I wouldn't have to miss dinner to help out a Japanese customer. I thought a second Sun was an elegant solution...

Ev'y'body's talking 'bout the second Sun
But in this world there is only one,
There's just one,
There's just one
There's just one only one,
One single solitary Sun.

I worked late last night also but I simply turned on the ceiling light in the room. I didn't require a sun at that point in time.

Hi, Mom.

I had to go back to the office for an hour late last night to help resolve a problem for a customer in Japan. I think we need another Sun so we can have equal opportunity daylight hours.

Just the interesting ones. The only trouble is I can't see how to become a retired OB/GYN without going to an awful lot of trouble to become a practicing one first. I guess the first step is recognizing that you DO need to practice, huh? Kinda like AA recognizing there is a problem.

No, there is not. SOme people sniff bicycle seats, others analyze gastric emissions, some try to make music by eructation, some collect toothpicks with poems inscribed on them in tiny script, even though no-one can read them. SO people grade coprolite, so people collect pieces of old human hair. I know one guy whose hobby is wandering around staring at lighthouses.

Maybe people do it (Facebook, etc) so they can be digitally reassured every day that, yes, they DO exist and that their lives have some significance. ;-D I can't believe all the trivial stuff there is to do on Facebook and it's a mystery to me why anyone could be bothered to figure it all out and keep track of it.

However, there's no explaining people's hobbies, is there?

Janie, I keep closing down more and more of Facebook. But in a leap of technological optimism, I signed up for Twitter. I don't know anyone who does it, but I know that the Diane Rehm show uses it, so I set up to "watch" there. And while I was at it, I looked around and another NPR personality has an account. So I set that up to "watch" as well--and this morning I found that person is watching back! Now what on earth could I say that this person would find interesting? "I just washed my car" or "My son missed the school bus so I had to drive him over and he was soaking wet" or other mundane stuff.

It really is bizarre.

John In Kansas started a thread (there is only the one post and it's well down the page) about how to quit various online site, in case you're interested. He posted a link from one of the journals--PC Magazine or CNet, one of those. I just glanced at it but I did trace it to find again later. In case I want to quit Tweeting. :)

MOM wants to tweet, though. She's been tweeting non-stop to try to reach Rap's cel phone, but he's in Ireland. I think he left his phone on and plugged in at his house, so when he gets home he's going to find about 275 text messages tweeted by MOM to his "device."

Yeh, I signed up with Facebook when I thought Mudcat would be down for awhile to join the Mudcat Group there. It very quickly seemed like way too much for my tastes. Maybe I'm just not that social, but it felt very awkward and uncomfortable. I didn't like having my mailbax jammed with notifications, and didn't want to take the rather extensive amount of time it would have taken to figure out what to turn off, and what not to. Also, I am one of those people pleasers that feels guilty if some one I know and like makes a request. All the thingies that people would send and ask you to send back so a dollar would get contributed somewhere drove me nuts. I resented getting them, and felt guilty about ignoring them.

The Wall, and 25 random things seemed really weird. Who the heck cares what I might be doing at any given point in time, and, truth be known, there aren't 25 uniquely interesting things about me that are worth sharing with 300 of my closest "friends."

'course, I'm pretty lousy at small talk and general casual socializing in 3-D. Not surprising the same is true on the Web.

Mudcat is enough for me, and it is much easier to titrate!

Everyone operates on their own mix of scarcities and surpluses. Some have an abiding scarcity of communication and get quite desperate trying to fill it. SOmetimes, when you look a little deeper into it,the apparent scarcity comes from having an overdose of bad communication (television, authoritarian nuns, what have you).

I've been feeling quite disenchanted with Facebook for some of the same reasons Amos alluded to. I can't see the point in it, and I'm thinking of terminating my Facebook page if I can figure out how to. ;-) The only time I ever even go there is when I get an email telling me that someone else I never heard of has sent me a "friend" request.

Who are they and why do they bother?

Leo,

At Facebook go into Settings -> Notifications, and look at all of those options for Facebook, Photos, Groups, Pages, etc. Under that top category of "Facebook" you canlook at all of those radio buttons and turn off a lot of notifications. There is a line at the bottom of the list that says "show more (6)" so don't miss those. This program is WAY TOO BUSY to be very helpful, it's more "social" than "networking."

The trouble with Mudcat is that we don't use our own names at the 'cat but most of us use our own names at Facebook. I'm clueless as to who some of them are most of the time.

It is interesting. The word "friend" once had a deeper meaning, a stronger bond, and a duty of some kind that was willingly accepted by those who used the word.

Today it means someone has clicked a box on a web page by clicking a plastic button, sending an ASCII code to an interface, modulated, hopped, re-routed, reassembled, demodulated processed at front and back ends, starting a CGI or Java script, causing switches deep in a server to rattle and spark, writing a string to a file on a disk somewhere in the cloud....and never a moment of thought, spirit, ethical connection, commitment, honor, or loyalty is involved.

So...is this, then, an improvement?

I went onto facebook laST night (first time in a long time) and okayed a bunch of "friend" requests - ditched a bunch of people I have no clue why they were "friending" me - and one I know why - but I really don't need to "friend" the estranged mother of a foster nephew.

But how ridiculous is it to have a system that e-mails you to say someone has sent you a message; but makes you log into the site to read the message AND gives you no way to respond to the notification!

Most of the boards/lists/forums I belong to you either do everything through the site, or the e-mails allow you to do everything through e-mail. MUCH more sensible.

What funny things these translation bots are! I have answered a query from France about a coat I'm selling on eBay. I set it up to go to North America only, because I don't know what the rules are for shipping fur out of the U.S. but I figure Canada is safe.

I answered (more or less, I didn't keep a copy.) The question was in broken English so I sent back (apprently) broken French.

I think your query is about shipping to France? My apology, but I set this up to only ship to North America. I don't think I can change the countries to ship to now. I decided to not try to sell this worldwide to avoid the problems of shipping a fur. I read a little French, and I used Bablefish to write this. Bablefish dot yahoo dot com

(eBay won't let you use quotes, html, or URLs in responses).

This is what Bablefish came up with:

Je pense que vous vous êtes enquis de l'expédition en France? Mes excuses, mais moi avons établi ceci seulement pour embarquer en Amérique du Nord. Je ne sais pas s'il est possible de changer des nations de destination maintenant. J'ai décidé de ne pas essayer de me vendre dans le monde entier pour éviter les problèmes d'embarquer une fourrure. J'ai lu français, j'avais l'habitude le bablefish pour écrire ceci. bablefish dot yahoo dot com

I just ran it backwards through Bablefish to see what that person might see when it gets there.

I think that you are enquis of l' forwarding in France? My excuses, but me established this to only embark in North America. I do not know s' it is possible to change nations of destination now. J' decided not to try to sell to me in the whole world to avoid the problems d' to embark a fur. J' read French, j' had l' practice the bablefish to write this. bablefish dowry yahoo dowry COM

Oh, well. You'd think Bablefish would at least switch French to francais. I didn't look before I cut, pasted, and sent.

Time only recently has been theorized to occur in quantized packets like seperate frames of a movie.

This should be good news for the LSD crowd in assuring them that what they saw were not imagined trails that seemed to segment as they tracked movement of any kind - it is the way things really move.

The brain smoothes out the quanta packets - or else orchestras could never follow the baton of a conductor. It would all look like down beats.
