What a dreadful prospect.... :) There must be any number of better ways to make amends.

You could, of course, tell him that the GALACTIC Overlord was mine. So was his evil twin.

I thought maybe that was the case... :) Galactic Overlord, right. It does sound like something you'd come up with.

Good, but just think, if they are not trolling around, they may be outside their abodes in the real world. Best keep an eye out.

I have seen white dog quark... in spring. Not fresh out of the dog.

Can't find the skit I want about the corn but this is just as gross.

No blue clicky. If you search it and find it gross... well... that's what I said. YOUR bad.

It's about the ONLY thing they do well! Except from protecting you from squirrels, as long as the squirrels are outside and they're not.

WHAT a vile attack upon the noble Dachshund! I'll have you know that there are many things they do well. To wit...

- barking
- stealing food
- peeing on things
- gluttony
- sleeping
- sloth
- growling
- emitting strong odors!
- finding carrion and manure
- rolling in the above (see: emitting strong odors)
- killing rodents
- pursuing rabbits, squirrels, and other such furry creatures
- robbing garbage
- howling (to accompany harmonica and ambulance and police vehicles)
- begging for food
- rolling their eyes
- looking guilty, but not necessarily repentant
- getting drunk at garden parties

All in all, the Dachshund has so many gifts and great qualities that it beggars description.

I have known many dachshunds. I still do. Lilly and Rose are cute, Huey is slightly paranoid and is just learning to play in his old age. But other than what I mentioned before and above they are good for eating, sleeping, and pooping. But there's something about them, a survival thing, I think, that appeals to people's pity potential and make people take care of them.

Well, people created them through selective breeding, therefore it is people's responsibility to take care of them.

The same can be said of Duroc and Poland-China hogs, Rhode Island chickens, and Santa Gertrudis cattle. Not to mention corn, soybeans, millet, and poison ivy.

We have annual Weiner Races here at the Del Mar Fairgrounds. They are said to behighly comical --little waggly legs flying along three inches from the ground, and all. I never saw the attraction myself, but any dog who loves a hooming can't be all bad! :D

My wife and I love dogs, but we decided long ago that we traveled too much to be good dog owners. So we have many, many doggie friends. Like the one last year when we were having some work done here and found that there were two dogs in the guy's truck. We offered our back yard (fenced) to them and it was greatly appreciated. The older one (lab sized) enjoyed the freedom. The puppy sat behind my chair on the porch and rested her head on my shoulder.

Dachshund races are fun to watch. Usually there are a few Dachsies who totally get the idea and fly down the course at lightning speed, while a few others aren't sure, and they dither around some, and another few really don't get it at all...but they all eventually end up at the finish line one way or another. The FAST ones really move!

Your dog's name determines its personality. Call it "Greased Lighting" and it will be fast. Call it "Rover" and it will roam all over. Call it "Chongx" and it will be ugly and unlovable. Call it "Shame" and you'd best protect your beer and your house from the stink.

I used to give my dogs baths in the hall bathroom tub, but I don't give them so many baths now (it used to be about once a month, now it is maybe three times a year). I usually do it on a warm day in the yard with the shampoo in a squirt bottle and a hose. But years ago I did give them baths in the house, and my blue heeler mix does not like baths, so she will never voluntarily enter the hall bathroom. The other two will follow you in and take advantage of having a captive audience. But astonishingly, Poppy came into the bathroom to get her ears scratched yesterday. I think it is about five years since she last had a bath in there.

Great concert night tonight at Hooper's Cafe in Washago. John Ashe and I entertained the audience with our eclectic mix of songs. I only played 2 Dylan songs tonight! The rest were mostly my own songs, plus "Pancho & Lefty" by Townes Van Zandt, "Goodnight Irene" by Leadbelly, and one other cover tune (Spoon River). John did his usual mix of old country, various trad tunes the UK and Ireland, old murder ballads, stories about tragic death, and the odd truly unexpected gem like his recitation of "The Ballad of the Harp Weaver", a wonderful poem by Edna St. Vincent Millay.

Is that the song that goes "Spoon River, wider than a mile..."? I think Richard Cory first did that one as people on the sidewalk looked at him.

No.

It's a song about some people in a little Union town at the end of the Civil War.

Actually, "The Spoon River is a 147-mile-long (237 km) tributary of the Illinois River in west-central Illinois in the United States. The river drains largely agricultural prairie country between Peoria and Galesburg. The river is noted for giving its name to the fictional Illinois town in the 1916 poetry work Spoon River Anthology by Edgar Lee Masters, who was from Lewistown, which is near the river."

I've been there. Many times. You should visit.

The song isn't "Edgar Lee Masters" stuff, or at least I can't find that he wrote it, but it IS very much in the theme of "Spoon River Anthology."

Surprisingly, LH, I actually did know what you were talking about. I just chose not to.

Sure, why not? The USA should also give back all the land it took from Mexico, meaning: California, Arizona, New Mexico. Maybe Texas, but that's debatable, because the Texans were independent for awhile. And then give back Guantanamo to Cuba. And give Puerto Rico to the Puerto Ricans. And so on.... :) It's a looooong list! I'm not going to hold my breath waiting for it to happen.

California was also an independent republic for a brief time. Texas getting out of the Union was settled in 1865, and of course Texas asked to join in the first place (as did all of the states except Hawai'i.

There's this.

Yes, yes...the fact remains, Rap, that the USA did what larger, more powerful nations always do to militarily weaker neighbors when they see a chance to get some valuable land. It took that land by a variety of covert and overt methods. One of those methods is to send in a substantial number of one's own people as immigrants, then in awhile when there are enough of them there, they stage a coup, a local government takeover, an "independence" movement...and if they succeed, then the area they took from the weaker nation is soon brought directly into the USA and it becomes a new state (or states) of the USA. Another method is to offer the neighboring country an insultingly low amount of money to give away some of their valuable land. When they don't agree to that, some "incident" is arranged or some other pretext is used to declare war and take that area of land by force. It's easily done. The Japanese did stuff like that to China and Korea over a lengthy period of time (until they lost it all at the end of WWII). The USA did stuff like that to Mexico...repeatedly...until all the really desirable lands north of the Mexican central desert areas had been annexed by the USA. And why did the USA do this? For the same reason great powers always do....they *could* do it. They had the strength to do it.

Hence the famous statement of Benito Juarez: "Poor Mexico. So far from God, and so near the United States!"

Well, LH, everything has more to it than we like. For example, the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo 550,000 square miles into the US after the Mexican War, but the US also paid Mexico $15 million and picked up $3.25 million owed to Mexico by people in those square miles. That's about USD 8.8 billion in 2014 dollars. Yes, the Mexican War was a blatant expansionist effort by an expansionist President. But the Bear Flag Revolt in California was brought about by, among many other things, the refusal of Mexico to allow immigrants to California to own land they purchased.

Japan occupied Korea from 1910 to 1945 and basically enslaved the country, which led sort of directly to the North/South division that exists in Korea now.

If you do want to think on something, think about the Oregon Treaty. It was made between the US and Great Britain. Should Canada repudiate that treaty on the basis that it was not signed by Canada, what would happen to me here in Idaho? Would Canada sends forces to occupy Pocatello? I promise not to shoot at them if they don't shoot a me.

I have no problem with the Oregon Treaty, Rap. That was mutually arrived at by the UK and the USA to everyone's satisfaction, so it's okay with me. Canada (as an independent political entity) didn't exist back then...it was a dominion of the British Empire, and the British Empire agreed to the Oregon Treaty. Fine with me.

Same goes for the Louisiana Purchase, when the French sold that area to the USA. Again, both sides agreed on a price, and the sale went through, and I don't see a problem with that either. Similarly, Russia sold Alaska to the USA. Again, I have no problem with that.

If, however, we did occupy Pocatello...! Hmm. Well, first of all, I'd recommend that the Legion Hovel be declared a protected historic site. And we'd offer you dual citizenship, and just think...you'd have access to Tim Horton's donut shops, Canadian beer, AND our National Health Insurance Plan! Shane could even visit you without having to cross the border. These would be major bonuses from your point of view, so I think you should hope we invade soon! :D

All joking aside, I hope everything goes well with your surgery, and that you are soon back in form showing the people and wildlife around there that librarians are NOT to be taken for granted.
