...and if you doubt my abilities...remember this?

...the plan for bridging Rose Canyon is (a) destructive (b) wasteful (c ) an idiocy of mismanagement or (d) all of the above.

It is destructive to one of the few remaining natural habitats in the area.

It costs millions of dollars more than a better alternative.

It is a bad-planning solution to a bad-planning problem, both coated in the kind of greed for which the worst of our kind is famous....

There is more...lots more...which is much more embarassing.

Hallo, Mom, and welcome back Bro! We went to the mopuntains for an evening and stayed in a quaint old Hotel dating from the 1890's, all touched up nice and friendly and quaint as hell, in a small town that turns everythign off by 8 PM and turns dead silent, with only the pine breezes to remind you that the world is in motion. Very restful place.

Rapaire, if it really has sequins I'll pass. Besides if I give you my mailing address, there's no end to the things youc ould mail me, like battery-operated singing cartoons or talking fishes and I might have a heart attack.

But welcome back anyway!

A

Ah, Mom! It's soooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo good to be home again!

And I got the tee shirts in MOAB, too! Now if SRS, Amos, and Bunn will PM me their mailing addresses (the ones for real, hard copy, mail, not email) I'll send the tee shirts off.

Naturally, Mom, I couldn't get everyone what they wanted, but I did get some nice ones in the sizes requested. For examples, they didn't have a tee shirt with a sporran for Bunn, or one ass decolletage as SRS asked for, but the I did get Amos pretty much what he wanted. I think he'll like the sparkly sequins and rhinestones.

Anyway, I'm back home and tomorrow I have to go to work and now I have to go unpack and do the laundry and things.

And I saw Jerry because Jerry told me that he and Ruth were going to be at the South Rim of the Grand Canyon at the same time I was at the North Rim and that he'd wear a white carnation so I'd recognize him! So nyah, nyah, nyah to all you heretics, infidels, and non-believers!

I've been out and around, MOM. I'm not just moping over the computer, though it might look like it for all of the help the others are giving this afternoon!

Catch you later, after I get home from taking Moonglow back to school. (I upset her this afternoon, telling her it was time to rethink trying to work a few hours at DQ when it costs me half of what she earns just to go get her and take her back, and if I have to go get her, I'd rather enjoy her company than be at the beck and call of DQ. She needs a better paying job on campus.)

It's a fine morning here in Fort Worth. Had a bit of a tussle with some neighbor's dogs off leash while we were out walking. But other than that, a good walk. (One of those anti-social pooches tried to take a chunk out of my pit bull's hindquarters! She just looked at it like it was a little bit nuts. We finally just stood there, then sat, waiting for the neighbors to catch the idiotic dogs.)

Finding some good stuff in the Mudcat threads this evening, and bookmarked a new page. I get a lot of good tips here that I pass on at work, and I think I have another. I might even share it with our other library person if he ever comes back from the wilds of AZ.

Any postcards from Rap yet? Maybe some of those garish colored cartoons they sell of the FooFoo bird, or rattle snakes too big to have a pit to hiss in?

One pace tall, where I come from, would be two full steps (left right left). Pacing off a chain (66 feet) when I worked in the Forest Service meant 13 1/2 paces. 4.8 feet tall. A few inches shy.

Just so you know. Now what were we talking about?

You'll probably find you're about two paces tall, but may need some help establishing this, as pacing yourself is easiest for gymnasts and other contortionists.

Those fiberglass cows, now, they're pretty light, aren't they? So if you put hinges on their legs so you could fold them up small, like, you could probably put several of them in the storage bins in the Space Shuttle Atlantis. If you hurry, you can get them aboard before next lift-off, given they have had to delay it to fix a sensor. It would be a historical occasion and well worth the trouble. Why?

It would surely be the herd shot 'round the world.

This is not an original idea, just so you know. They did this years ago in both New York City and Chicago. The Chicago show was quite large, made a big splash. I don't know where those folks stole the idea from. . .

So we need to edit this Pome so it says, "With just 106 posts more..." (assuming this will be 13894). 700 is the number of score (20 each) Mom will reach when she arrives at post 14,000.

But the rest, and the spirit of the thing, is quite right. Poets who do math are improbable.

Dear Mom, in just eighteen posts more,
Your count will reach to 700 score,
A towering height, and grounds for satisfaction.
But, let not comon sense yield to distraction
Or pride inflate the spirit past all telling
For brains are oftened ruined, over-swelling.

And lest we be misled by glory's thunder
Remember 14 grand is just a number,
Not a beach-head, summit or high star.
There are toher things which more important are!
Though none can doubt you for endurance,
Let me add, as pride-insurance,

That some songs (metal, acid, ads and rap)
Are not real music -- they're just crap.
Thus with BS -- the world of minds
Can churn it out in different kinds
And measure it in color or degree,
And guage it on its quality.

And whether red, or blue or ochre,
A lot of yours is mediocre.
Having the most does not mean best,
You've miles to go, before you rest.
Therefore, Dear Mom, keep right on walking
No laurels here, or idle talking,
But onward, onward, onward press!

Search on for pure, refined BS,
The kind that makes the roof and rafter
Tremble in unexpected laughter
Or jars the mind out of the soul
And pulls Rapaire out of his hole.
There is the quest, and worth pursuing!
So onward, Mom! Be up and doing!

One of the 100 most memorable openings to a book written yet in English:

" In the last years of the Seventeenth Century there was to be found among the fops and fools of the London coffee-houses one rangy, gangling flitch called Ebenezer Cooke, more ambitious than talented, and yet more talented than prudent, who, like his friends-in-folly, all of whom were supposed to be educating at Oxford or Cambridge, had found the sound of Mother English more fun to game with than her sense to labor over, and so rather than applying himself to the pains of scholarship, had learned the knack of versifying, and ground out quires of couplets after the fashion of the day, afroth with Joves and Jupiters, aclang with jarring rhymes, and string-taut with similes stretched to the snapping-point. "

well - when you live in a "rural wasteland" where the small retail stores all went out of business 5-10 years BEFORE there was even a proposal for a Wal-mart; when a large segment of local population is employed ONLY due to Wal-mart; and when wal-mart is the only source of many products under a two hour drive; where wal-mart has the SAME product as those two-hour distant stores for less; Wal-mart is looked on differently.

Which is not to excuse their variou sshady business practices, etc. But Wal-mart has provided a badly needed presence in many rural areas.

That we are free to think or not to think

I was sorely tempted a few weeks ago by WalMart--my ex had some beautiful big apples on his kitchen table when I walked in to pick up the kids. I thought perhaps he'd been by a farmer's market somewhere, but no, he shops at WallyWorld. Big colorful crisp looking Gala and Braeburn and Fuju apples--mouthwatering! I resisted however and found some pretty good ones at a local competing supermarket.

I think we could use a little Southwestern chili pepper commentary here at the MOAB, not just us apple-eaters. The Hatch crop is in and I bet all of New Mexico smells like roasting peppers now--a smell like no other, the harbinger of fall in the desert, the essence of the Southwest. Mmmmmmm! They don't grow them here (at least not in any quantity) that I'm aware of and I don't know if anyone locally roasts them, but I've been in Albuquerque when the parks and parking lots are filled with chili roasters. I carried a hot fragrant box of chilis home for a friend one afternoon and was in heaven when the next day she made a batch of green chili stew.

Arizona may have a different fall crop, tunas and yucca and agave and who knows what else, but does it also have some peppers?

Why should pointing out the good side of someone make trouble? Cui bono? Chassez la femme! Che uomo! And other expletives.

Walmart brings MANY good things to many good people. IF it happens to steamroll every sall business in a 100-miles radius to do so, is that so wrong?
