Subject: RE: BS: The Mother of all BS threads From: Amos Date: 28 Mar 11 - 05:02 PM Deutsche Waffen- und Munitionsfabriken Aktien-Gesellschaft (German Weapons and Munitions public limited company), known as DWM, was an arms company in Imperial Germany created in 1896 when Ludwig Loewe & Company united its weapons and ammunition production facilities within one company. In 1896 Loewe founded Deutsche Waffen- und Munitionsfabriken with a munitions plant in Karlsruhe (Baden), formerly Deutsche Metallpatronenfabrik Lorenz, and the weapons plant in Berlin. All the very best von und zus were connected. |
Subject: RE: BS: The Mother of all BS threads From: Eiseley Date: 28 Mar 11 - 11:14 PM Hmmm, that is one option, Rap. But I think I'd get there faster if I could feckin' flap. On another note: I did make it home in time for Tom to catch Granny in one of her last lucid moments. Hospice has now been in, and they set up a hospital bed as well as arranged for some morphine. Those two things alone have helped immensely. I made dinner for everyone tonight (except for Granny, she's stopped eating), and they ate in shifts. All in all, it is a solemn but not miserable time. It would be so much sadder and more poignant if she weren't 87 and very anxious to go. Eiseley |

It's a somber time, unavoidable, so one best handled with respect and grace. Happened a couple of weeks ago with an old family friend - there can be complications due to religion (not surprising, I suppose) and that made for some angst, but he died peacefully. Subject: RE: BS: The Mother of all BS threads From: Rapparee Date: 30 Mar 11 - 10:16 AM You ever eat liver noodle soup, Amos? Or snail soup? We had them all the time when I was growing up, because we were very, very, very, very poor. We were so poor that the church mice were looked down their noses at us. So poor that we eat cow pie for a special treat. So poor that beggars and tramps gave US crumbs of bread. We didn't even have our own pants until we went into the military...we had to share the same pair for years and years, which got tricky at school and church. We were so poor we not only didn't go to movies and have a radio or television, we hadn't even heard about them. And yet, it built character and made my siblings and me what we are today: eccentric as all hell, but never boring. |
Subject: RE: BS: The Mother of all BS threads From: MMario Date: 30 Mar 11 - 10:19 AM *grin* funny to see liver dumpling soup and snail soup used as examples of poverty - because I've seen recipes for them from VERY posh restaurants.... |
Subject: RE: BS: The Mother of all BS threads From: Amos Date: 30 Mar 11 - 11:49 AM IT depends on where you get the snails, and whose liver is dumplinged. ANyway, Rapp, I have all respect for the alleged poverty of your alleged childhood. You are truly the Munchausen of the Have Nots. A |

Subject: RE: BS: The Mother of all BS threads From: Amos Date: 30 Mar 11 - 03:29 PM Chongo, fergeeddaboudit. You was dreamed up, not born, a synthetic revery with artificial time built-in. You was never any younger than you was the day that happened. 'Course you don't age much, either, so it's a trade-off I guess. |
Subject: RE: BS: The Mother of all BS threads From: Little Hawk Date: 30 Mar 11 - 05:34 PM That's right. ;-) Sherlock Holmes never ages, and neither does Chongo. In fact...they are immortal! Gives one pause, doesn't it? |
Subject: RE: BS: The Mother of all BS threads From: Stilly River Sage Date: 30 Mar 11 - 07:12 PM By that manner of reasoning, anyone ever mentioned on paper is "immortal." Needs a little stronger evidence of existence than that - how about a blood test? |
Subject: RE: BS: The Mother of all BS threads From: Amos Date: 30 Mar 11 - 08:06 PM Interesting leap of flawed logic. "I do not age, therefore I am immortal" completely ignores the much more probable explanation: "I do not age, therefore I am not real!" A |
Subject: RE: BS: The Mother of all BS threads From: Little Hawk Date: 30 Mar 11 - 08:10 PM Immortality is achieved, Amos, as long as a character lives on in people's minds and is remembered. Subject: RE: BS: The Mother of all BS threads From: Stilly River Sage Date: 31 Mar 11 - 01:04 AM A Good Chimp I woke before the morning, I was happy all the day, I never said an ugly word, but smiled and stuck to play. And now at last the sun is going down behind the wood, And I am very happy, for I know that I've been good. My bed is waiting cool and fresh, with linen smooth and fair, And I must be off to sleepsin-by, and not forget my prayer. I know that, till to-morrow I shall see the sun arise, No ugly dream shall fright my mind, no ugly sight my eyes. But slumber hold me tightly till I waken in the dawn, And hear the thrushes singing in the lilacs round the lawn. Bobbie Louie Stevie, whenever, wherever |
Subject: RE: BS: The Mother of all BS threads From: Rapparee Date: 31 Mar 11 - 10:43 AM I hardly know what to say about that poem, Stilly. It's touched me, touched me deeply. Having read it my life was completed and all other poetry and prose have, like an insubstantial pageant, faded and left not a rack behind. Other poetry, like gorgeous palaces and cloud-capped towers, have faded into air, into thing air. I know now that they were but such things as dreams were made of and their little life were rounded with a sleep. |
Subject: RE: BS: The Mother of all BS threads From: Eiseley Date: 31 Mar 11 - 10:56 AM A Test of Love "I love you, Mother," said little John; Then, forgetting his work, his cap went on, And he was off to the garden swing, Leaving his mother the wood to bring. "I love you, Mother," said little Nell; "I love you better than tongue can tell!" Then she teased and pouted half the day, Till mother rejoiced when she went to play. "I love you, Mother," said little Fan "Today I'll help you all I can," To the cradle then she did softly creep, And rocked the baby till it fell asleep. Then stepping softly, she took the broom, And swept the floor and dusted the room; Busy and happy all day was she, Helpful and cheerful as she could be. "I love you, Mother," again they said, Three little children going to bed. How do you think that Mother guessed Which of them really loved her best? From Ethics for Chimpanzees by Elmer F. Capon |

Subject: RE: BS: The Mother of all BS threads From: Rapparee Date: 31 Mar 11 - 09:25 PM Once a little chimpanzee Was learning at his mother's knee Of the ways of apes and chimps, Monkeys, bonobos, orangutangs and pimps. "Yes!" shouted the little chimpanzee "A pimp is what I want to be!" His poor mother fainted dead away, And her little son went out to play. He sold his sisters to some men Who used them up, one died, and then He stole his elderly father's gun, And from his mother stole quite a sum. He used ill-gotten loot to buy A ticket to the You Ess Eye Where he slipped through Immigration tight By hiding in a tun of shite. Now he lives in the Windy City (A place to be in fear and pity) Denies his sister, mom and dad: Methinks this chimp's gone to the bad. -- Amelia Mary Freshet, A Bad Little Monkey (Small, Idaho: Small Press, 1873) |
Subject: RE: BS: The Mother of all BS threads From: Eiseley Date: 31 Mar 11 - 10:45 PM Granny has gone to her eternal reward. It is actually a relief, to all the others as well as to Granny herself. Three hundred sixty-four days ago exactly, my middle son came running in the house with a very subdued look on his face and said solemnly, "Granny just died . . . Subject: RE: BS: The Mother of all BS threads From: Stilly River Sage Date: 31 Mar 11 - 11:48 PM Your Granny and Janie's father. Death didn't take a holiday today. Just in case your son does remember that, you might want to talk about it with him - that jokes can't bring on events. At least not events like this. Because when tomorrow rolls around, he may think back, but he is liable to not share his thoughts, just worry about them. Tomorrow is the annual art glass sale on campus. It gets bigger every year and most of the glass is now untouchable. I'm awfully tempted to go - they've been doing some wonderful things with fuzed glass, as well as blowing and molding. The students and faculty there are a real glass act! |

Subject: RE: BS: The Mother of all BS threads From: Rapparee Date: 01 Apr 11 - 10:21 AM My nephew, Dan, was VERY upset because on the day before my brother collapsed in the ER his father had sighed and said to him, "Dan, you'll be the death of me yet" as he checked over Dan' homework. It took quite a lot of work to convince him that it was just an expression and he wasn't guilty of anything. Stuff like that can come back and haunt someone. |
