This is the Theory Jack built.

    This is the Flaw
    That lay in the Theory Jack built.

    This is the Mummery
    Hiding the Flaw
    That lay in the Theory Jack built.

    This is the Summary
    Based on the Mummery
    Hiding the Flaw
    That lay in the Theory Jack built.

    This is Constant K
    That saved the Summary
    Based on the Mummery
    Hiding the Flaw
    That lay in the Theory Jack built.

    This is the Erudite Verbal Haze
    Cloaking Constant K
    That saved the Summary
    Based on the Mummery
    Hiding the Flaw
    That lay in the Theory Jack built.

    This is the Turn of a Plausible Phrase
    That thickened the Erudite Verbal Haze
    Cloaking Constant K
    That saved the Summary
    Based on the Mummery
    Hiding the Flaw
    That lay in the Theory Jack built.

    This is Chaotic Confusion and Bluff
    That hung on the Turn of a Plausible Phrase
    That thickened the Erudite Verbal Haze
    Cloaking Constant K
    That saved the Summary
    Based on the Mummery
    Hiding the Flaw
    That lay in the Theory Jack built.

    This is the Cybernetics and Stuff
    That covered Chaotic Confusion and Bluff
    That hung on the Turn of a Plausible Phrase
    And thickened the Erudite Verbal Haze
    Cloaking Constant K
    That saved the Summary
    Based on the Mummery
    Hiding the Flaw
    That lay in the Theory Jack built.

    This is the Button to Start the Machine
    To make with the Cybernetics and Stuff
    To cover Chaotic Confusion and Bluff
    That hung on the Turn of a Plausible Phrase
    And thickened the Erudite Verbal Haze
    Cloaking Constant K
    That saved the Summary
    Based on the Mummery
    Hiding the Flaw
    That lay in the Theory Jack built.

    This is the Space Child with Brow Serene
    Who pushed the Button to Start the Machine
    That made with the Cybernetics and Stuff
    Without Confusion, exposing the Bluff
    That hung on the Turn of a Plausible Phrase
    And, shredding the Erudite Verbal Haze
    Cloaking Constant K
    Wrecked the Summary
    Based on the Mummery
    Hiding the Flaw
    And Demolished the Theory Jack built.

gnu, it doesn't cost more than a dirty thirty to feed. Both pretty much have the same ballistics at 100 meters or so, and there are now bullets available to match the...effects. Now, iffen you want to dump that 94 and mail it to me all the parts, I'm pretty good at puzzles.... I'm not mad at Canada; shucks, Alberta shares a border with Idaho and I've been in most of the Provinces including New B.

Donuel's last post was a fine example of a Mom sequitur.

A Mom sequitur is a bit like a non sequitur, but not exactly. Whereas a non sequitur literally "does not follow", a Mom sequitur does follow, but in a manner perceptible only to the highly trained senses of long-time MOABites.

"See the cat? See the cradle?"

Many thanks, gnu.
I didn't want to be the one to get post number 57400.
Always like to leave those for
Rapparee the Imperious and His Closest Associates,
like yourself, the Imperial Game Warden.

If Sylvie and Bruno is not to your taste,
you may disregard this part of my post.

Rapparee has left out / forgotten a plot detail
which is used to hold the story together.

Two little children have a father, and their father
is an important means, as the children are,
for linking the diverse kingdoms / "realities."

Though the children are evidently part fairy/elf/whatever,
they may travel as far as
human "reality" where they meet with the Englishwomen and -men,
in Elveston, out in the country.

The children's father, who is never given a name, only an office,
does not appear in Elveston or in England.

He is the acting Warden of Outland, however, and
he has just been chosen King of Elfland,
which is part of but not the whole of the fairy realm.

One ongoing part of the plot, from beginning to end,
is the father's transition from Warden of Outland
to King of Elfland.
The father is hard at work putting this transition into place;
it is one reason that his children are under the care of others in Outland,
while he moves back and forth between kingdoms.

There are indeed satires about academia. There are other satires in place,
and these figure largely in the Outland episodes/chapters.
As in the heading for one of the first chapters:

"Less Bread! More Taxes!"
How COULD you forget that one?
Or the riposte of the villainous Wife of the Vice-Warden:
"It runs in families,
much as a love of pastry does."

Thanks to her experimentation, we now have a woad-burning fireplace.

You've read Steinbeck's book, "The Grapes of Laff"? It's about Tom Woad and his family, Okies who really had the blues.

Well, my wonderful wife is in Lincoln, Nebraska to co-present on "The Other Blues"* at the International Quilt Study Center and Museum on the U. of Nebraska campus in Lincoln. She reminded me that I had promised her a list of Bison Books (U. of N. Press trademark) to see if she could obtain, so I sent her a list of five. Her presentation is Saturday, the thing has been sold out for awhile now, and she and her co-presenter are awed by the bevy of Big Names In The Quilt World who will be there.

Alas, I didn't travel the path of tracking down all of the works of Mr. Dodson, unlike my interest in Tolkien and Bradbury, and when I was younger, Beverly Cleary. In the "for what it's worth" category, you can download the book for free here. And I might just do that.

Plots be damned.
In the second volume it needed a good space alien to pull all the quilt squares together at the end to explain the many worlds quantum theory but alas the space alien only carped about the British gubmint.

It's probably a good example of half heartedly fulfilling a commitment to a lucrative advance after going down best selling rabbit holes.

Two volumes, fairy children, skipping around between fairy lands (Outland? et al.) and our "reality", a quilt-like pattern to the structure, I think it's a satire on academia. That's about all I remember; I haven't read it in years and don't have a copy in my library.

The Old Man's Comforts and How He Gained Them
          Good Ol' Bob Southey

You are old, Father William, the young man cried,
?The few locks which are left you are grey;
You are hale, Father William, a hearty old man,
?Now tell me the reason I pray.

In the days of my youth, Father William replied,
?I remember'd that youth would fly fast,
And abused not my health and my vigour at first
?That I never might need them at last.

You are old, Father William, the young man cried,
?And pleasures with youth pass away,
And yet you lament not the days that are gone,
?Now tell me the reason I pray.

In the days of my youth, Father William replied,
?I remember'd that youth could not last;
I thought of the future whatever I did,
?That I never might grieve for the past.

You are old, Father William, the young man cried,
?And life must be hastening away;
You are chearful, and love to converse upon death!
?Now tell me the reason I pray.

I am chearful, young man, Father William replied,
?Let the cause thy attention engage;
In the days of my youth I remember'd my God!
?And He hath not forgotten my age.

I have read pretty much everything Charley Dodgson wrote, including the logic books.

Here, BWL. I love any excuse to post this poem:

‘You are old, Father William’ (1865)
Lewis Carroll

“You are old, Father William,” the young man said,
“And your hair has become very white;
And yet you incessantly stand on your head –
Do you think, at your age, it is right?”

“In my youth,” Father William replied to his son,
“I feared it might injure the brain;
But, now that I’m perfectly sure I have none,
Why, I do it again and again.”

“You are old,” said the youth, “as I mentioned before,
And have grown most uncommonly fat;
Yet you turned a back-somersault in at the door –
Pray, what is the reason of that?”

“In my youth,” said the sage, as he shook his grey locks,
“I kept all my limbs very supple
By the use of this ointment – one shilling the box –
Allow me to sell you a couple?”

“You are old,” said the youth, “and your jaws are too weak
For anything tougher than suet;
Yet you finished the goose, with the bones and the beak –
Pray, how did you manage to do it?”

“In my youth,” said his father, “I took to the law,
And argued each case with my wife;
And the muscular strength, which it gave to my jaw,
Has lasted the rest of my life.”

“You are old,” said the youth, “one would hardly suppose
That your eye was as steady as ever;
Yet you balanced an eel on the end of your nose –
What made you so awfully clever?”

“I have answered three questions, and that is enough,”
Said his father; “don’t give yourself airs!
Do you think I can listen all day to such stuff?
Be off, or I’ll kick you downstairs!”

Wearing protective clothing doesn't discourage ticks, it places a barrier between your skin and the ticks. Similarly, using insect repellent doesn't discourage ticks, it repels them. The only way to discourage a tick is to catch it when it first gets on you, swat it on the nose with a rolled up newspaper*, and say, "Bad tick! Bad Tick!"

*If you still have such a thing as a physical newspaper handy, that is. If you get your news online, hitting the tick with a laptop, tablet, or cell phone will generally work just as well.

Mom!

It has occurred to me that I have grown old, I have grown old, but I have not worn my pants legs rolled!

When I was young, I was certain that doing so was inevitable, because Mr. Eliot told me so. Now, the only circumstance under which I can imagine wearing my pants legs rolled would be if I bought the wrong length pants and was too lazy to return them to the store.

Anyway, I live in Florida. I wear shorts most of the year. Rolled up legs on short pants are cute on females of appropriate age, but well beyond weird on old men.

And I still dare to eat a peach, though only if they're nice and soft.

Guitars should never be stored behind couches, under beds, or in closets unless the guitar owners' abilities are so dismal that their housemates will only allow them to play behind couches, under beds, or in closets.

Accordions and bagpipes, on the other hand, should only be stored behind couches, under beds, or in closets, in hopes that their owners will forget they exist.
