Subject: RE: BS: The Mother of all BS threads From: Teresa Date: 13 Jan 05 - 04:53 PM Ok, oh well, so much for my illusion of being "on the outside". Yes, thanks to the Internet, which Asscraft ... er, (sp?) has so far not succeeded in limiting (too much) I do read Ursula LeGuin. She's one of my favorites, as a matter of fact; I think I may have made a small reference to her in this or maybe the "Somebody has to be last" thread. I may have read a few of Octavia Butler's stories, but that's another idea for my reading list. :) Oh, how I love to tease LH about Shatner and that scottish poet (not Rabbie; the other one). ;);) I should be sending my book list to Asscraft before he bans them all. Oh, woe is me. Hurry up, Internet; increase your electronic offerings, before I perish from lack of brain-food. Teresa

Subject: RE: BS: The Mother of all BS threads From: Rapparee Date: 13 Jan 05 - 04:39 PM Perhaps this will help. Please note that it's written by Joan Baez' alter (and secret) identity. Author: John C. Baez Comments: 56 pages LaTeX, 11 Postscript Figures, some small corrections Subj-class: Rings and Algebras; Representation Theory; Quantum Algebra; History and Overview     The octonions are the largest of the four normed division algebras. While somewhat neglected due to their nonassociativity, they stand at the crossroads of many interesting fields of mathematics. Here we describe them and their relation to Clifford algebras and spinors, Bott periodicity, projective and Lorentzian geometry, Jordan algebras, and the exceptional Lie groups. We also touch upon their applications in quantum logic, special relativity and supersymmetry.

Subject: RE: BS: The Mother of all BS threads From: Amos Date: 13 Jan 05 - 04:15 PM After what Ashcroft did to Teresa I think the entire Mudcat ahould offer her shelter and succour. Stavros the reason I don't explain the interacting gravitons thing is that I don't understand it well enough to do so. My question (Do you know what this means....) was literal, because I dodn't know. I don't think Rapaire knows either, even though he answered "Yes". I think that was the most pretentious monosyllable ever uttered. A

Subject: RE: BS: The Mother of all BS threads From: Acme Date: 13 Jan 05 - 04:05 PM Uh Oh. Did you see that? She likes Star Trek. Little Hawk is gonna have the Shat-man over here in a flash testing Teresa's literary Star Trek credentials. (Teresa, do you read Ursula LeGuin and Octavia Butler?) Please do consider crafting the story of imprisonment based on trumped up Mudcat Charges. Please include Ashcroft as a major character. It could really rev up the imagination of all of these librarians and philosophers, trying to librate you. :)

Subject: RE: BS: The Mother of all BS threads From: Teresa Date: 13 Jan 05 - 03:35 PM I reads what I wants to, wherever I are. :) Usually that's at home. I do have headphones. I was going to make up a story about being in prison, but ... heck wid it. The subject matter is heavy already. :) Indeed, I use a screen-reader to convert text to speech, and also use a Braille display that shows 40 characters at a time. 2001: one of the few media things I like (I mostly do literary SF) The other is Star Trek, except Enterprise. Has this entire thing been read outloud? (Have you been arrested because of it?) I'm sure some of the stuff we dish out here is probably illegal in several English-speaking nations around the world, but we read quietly so others don't know what we're up to. Subject: RE: BS: The Mother of all BS threads From: Rapparee Date: 12 Jan 05 - 11:17 PM Title:                 Conformal (super)gravities with several gravitons Authors:                 Boulanger, Nicolas; Henneaux, Marc; van Nieuwenhuizen, Peter Journal:                 eprint arXiv:hep-th/0201023 Publication Date:                 01/2002 Abstract We construct consistent interacting gauge theories for M conformal massless spin-2 fields ("Weyl gravitons") with the following properties: (i) in the free limit, each field fulfills the equation ${\cal B}^{\mu \nu} = 0$, where ${\cal B}^{\mu \nu}$ is the linearized Bach tensor, (ii) the interactions contain no more than four derivatives, just as the free action and (iii) the internal metric for the Weyl gravitons is not positive definite. The interacting theories are obtained by gauging appropriate non-semi-simple extensions of the conformal algebra $so(4,2)$ with commutative, associative algebras of dimension M. By writing the action in terms of squares of supercurvatures, supersymmetrization is immediate and leads to consistent conformal supergravities with M interacting gravitons.

Subject: RE: BS: The Mother of all BS threads From: Acme Date: 12 Jan 05 - 08:54 PM I am not often in the position of being able to pay for expensive tickets to anything, but received a birthday gift back in 1978 when I lived in New York City. Dad said not to use it to pay any bills or buy a lifetime supply of subway tokens. I was to do something I wouldn't otherwise be able to afford. So I bought a ticket to the gala performance of The Bartered Bride at the Metropolitan Opera. It was marvelous! $65 was a lot of money (for me, anyway!) to spend on a ticket. I sat in the Grand Tier (the first balcony above the stage). While I'm at it, here's a bit more of the story: My roommate, Kris, decided to go with me, and she was able to get a ticket up next to god for about$15. Nearly got a nosebleed up there, she said. . . Anyway, we got as dressed up as two college kids with summer jobs could manage, and headed to the Met. We walked in, Kris in her cute little suit, I in a blouse and full-length kilt. Which I had to hike up a little when walking on stairs. We started up toward our seats when the time was right, and as we moved up the first flight of stairs, I paused to adjust the kilt so I wouldn't step on it. Kris, not paying attention, walked into me, and I ran into the elderly man on the stairs in front of me. At that exact moment the entire lobby and mezzanine broke into applause. I turned and looked downstairs to see who they were applauding for, but everyone there was looking up. So I looked up the stairs and the balconies, only everyone was looking down. So I looked at the old man in front of me and turned as red as my kilt. I was able to call home and tell my mother "Guess who I ran into at the opera the other day? Rudolph Bing!" [blush]

Subject: RE: BS: The Mother of all BS threads From: GUEST,Rapaire Date: 12 Jan 05 - 09:17 AM A head exploded in Moscow recently and brought this terrorist weapon to our attention. We know now that terrorist could board an aircraft and use his head for a bomb by doing the Sunday NYT crossword puzzle! Today, I have directed the Transportation Safety Administration and the FAA to ban all heads on the nation's airplanes. Nor can we let terrorists defeat this great nation by using their heads. After prolonged discussion with the National Security Agency, we have determined that there is a head gap. To protect ourselves, we must have -- we will have -- more heads than the terrorists! It will be a sacrifice for Americans, but today I call upon all of you to grow another head! Just one, but more if you can, and defeat the terrorist head bomb threat! My administration will pour whatever resources and money it takes into our now "Get A Head, America!" initiative, and we will do this without raising taxes. Remember -- get a head and defeat terrorism. For America. For your future and your children's future. I thank you, and good night.

Subject: RE: BS: The Mother of all BS threads From: JennyO Date: 12 Jan 05 - 01:12 AM Here is some food for thought on Spontaneous Combustion - if you dare to think at all after reading this!!!                                Spontaneous Combustion Weekly World News - MOSCOW Doctors are blaming a rare electrical imbalance in the brain for the bizarre death of a chess player whose head literally exploded in the middle of a championship game! No one else was hurt in the fatal explosion but four players and three officials at the Moscow Candidate Masters' Chess Championships were sprayed with blood and brain matter when Nikolai Titov's head suddenly blew apart. Experts say he suffered from a condition called Hyper-Cerebral Electrosis or HCE. "He was deep in concentration with his eyes focused on the board," says Titov's opponent, Vladimir Dobrynin. "All of a sudden his hands flew to his temples and he screamed in pain. Everyone looked up from their games, startled by the noise. Then, as if someone had put a bomb in his cranium, his head popped like a firecracker." Incredibly, Titiov's is not the first case in which a person's head has spontaneously exploded. Five people are known to have died of HCE in the last 25 years. The most recent death occurred just three years ago in 1991, when European psychic Barbara Nicole's skull burst. Miss Nicole's story was reported by newspapers worldwide, including WWN. "HCE is an extremely rare physical imbalance," said Dr. Anatoly Martinenko, famed neurologist and expert on the human brain who did the autopsy on the brilliant chess expert. "It is a condition in which the circuits of the brain become overloaded by the body's own electricity. The explosions happen during periods of intense mental activity when lots of current is surging through the brain. Victims are highly intelligent people with great powers of concentration. Both Miss Nicole and Mr. Titov were intense people who tended to keep those cerebral circuits overloaded. In a way it could be said they were literally too smart for their own good." Although Dr. Martinenko says there are probably many undiagnosed cases, he hastens to add that very few people will die from HCE. "Most people who have it will never know. At this point, medical science still doesn't know much about HCE. And since fatalities are so rare it will probably be years before research money becomes available." In the meantime, the doctor urges people to take it easy and not think too hard for long periods of time. "Take frequent relaxation breaks when you're doing things that take lots of mental focus," he recommends. (As a public service, Weekly World News added a sidebar titled HOW TO TELL IF YOUR HEAD'S ABOUT TO BLOW UP:) Although HCE is very rare, it can kill. Dr. Martinenko says knowing you have the condition can greatly improve your odds of surviving it. A "yes" answer to any three of the following seven questions could mean that you have HCE: 1. Does your head sometimes ache when you think too hard? (Head pain can indicate overloaded brain circuits.) 2. Do you ever hear a faint ringing or humming sound in your ears? (It could be the sound of electricity in the skull cavity.) 3. Do you sometimes find yourself unable to get a thought out of your head? (This is a possible sign of too much electrical activity in the cerebral cortex.) 4. Do you spend more than five hours a day reading, balancing your checkbook, or other thoughtful activity? (A common symptom of HCE is a tendency to over-use the brain.) 5. When you get angry or frustrated do you feel pressure in your temples? (Friends of people who died of HCE say the victims often complained of head pressure in times of strong emotion.) 6. Do you ever overeat on ice cream, doughnuts and other sweets? (A craving for sugar is typical of people with too much electrical pressure in the cranium.) 7. Do you tend to analyze yourself too much? (HCE sufferers are often introspective, "over-thinking" their lives.)

Subject: RE: BS: The Mother of all BS threads From: Rapparee Date: 11 Jan 05 - 08:10 PM Interesting. There is nothing in that old statement/question that says that the pot has to be on or near a heat source. I will therefore assume that the pot LH was watched experienced a violation of the Second Law of Thermodynamics by spontaneously heating itself to the point where it melted. This is a first, a genuine first! The Second Law of Thermodynamics is not, therefore, a law! Entropy decreased, actually decreased! It is possible that, because of this, we can have perpetual motion! The possibilities are endless and to an extent frightening. If LH would be so kind to write this up as an article for a juried journal he could, possibly, win the Nobel Prize and the money that goes with it. Holy Snowboarding Christ, it means free energy!! And free energy means the end of OPEC and all that -- and the President of the USA is an oilman! The world as we know it will be changed, changed utterly. A terrible beauty is born.
