We need to celebrate more saints here. I suggest St. Michael the Annoying, Patron Saint of Heretics.

I don't think Mom really had salad days. More like pork and beans days....

"Salad days". What an interesting phrase it is. I must launch a thread about that.

Any time any of therm wanted a salad, by Gum, they'd call on Mom justlike that!

In her "salad days" Mom associated with many well-known women, incuding Kate Barker, Martha Jane Canary, Eleanor Dumont, Grace McGinnis, Dora Dufran, Josephine Hensley, and others. She was quite well known.

Mom never worries about her top or bottom falling off. She only swims at clothing optional beaches. And if she can't find such a beach, she carries, in the trunk of her Yugo, a large sign saying

CLOTHING OPTIONAL BEACH!
IF NUDITY OFFENDS YOU,
JUST FUCKIN' LEAVE!

that she sticks in the sand. Nobody gets to tell Mom where she can and can't get some sun on her buns!

Quite pleasant the last few days here in mountains. Got up to about 86F today. However, the bottom (or top) falls off the next 10 days.

Excellent point, Rap, but be careful not to do it near the border or someone will take credit for it being part of his "wall."

That California heat seems to have finally drawn some of the heat off of us in Texas. Swishing around the nation like balls in a pinball machine, though, the heat this summer pops around and turns hot any ol' place.

Glad to hear you had a glad time, Amos. Yes, if Bee-Dub was to put a glaze on Sandy Ego it would sell as pottery.

My old stomping grounds in California are simmering in 118ºF heat. It makes our local North Carolinian 88ºF seem merely balmy im comparison.

We had a grand song circle with Mudcatters Jeni B and Frieda in attendance with a clutch of local area musicians chiming in, including the redoubtable Abby Sale.

Good times, indeedio!

Heaven v Hell. Well, that's not what happens after you die. That's what happens on your deathbed and then you live with it for the rest of your life.

You can quote me on that.

An unstable is a place where you don't keep horses. The military used to have am Unstable bugle call for everyone who wasn't in the cavalry; it was sounded to have the troops come out and clean everything that wasn't stable. Here is Stable Call. Now take out your bugle and play it backwards for Mom.

But, I suppose there is a sort of stability in being reliably and predictably unstable....

I believe BWL has identified an essential Mudcat paradox. The threads are pulled apart out of the degenerating posts-- and I don't doubt that often some kind of gin is involved. Thus, we see so many copycat threads and threads replacing clothed threads. Yet logic tells us that no matter how accurately this describes what occurs, logically it doesn't work. But then it's the kind of day where all sorts of "cantbe" things are appearing side by side. There being no gin available, my choices are covfefe or tonic. Hm... why not mix them! :-)

Hi, Mom!

I have had to procure yet another wee mousie for this computer. The previous one did not merely stop working, but expired rather violently when a lightning strike fried the poor little thing. It happened to be in my hand at the time, and I received a nasty shock. At first, I thought lighting had struck the house itself, but it turned out to have only hit nearby and sent a voltage spike down the power line and right into the poor little mousie's electronic innards. The computer itself seems to be undamaged.

The new mousie is wireless, though I don't suppose that makes it entirely immune to future voltage spikes. The little USB gizmo that makes it work is still vulnerable. But, at least, my hand won't be in direct contact with anything physically attached to the computer.

For what it's worth, Little Hawk, I am a Taoist. I do not believe in a "supreme being" in the theistic sense. I do not believe in the Judeo-Christian concept of Heaven or Hell, but I am not a hard-core atheist who denies the possibility of "life after death".

What I do believe is that we humans are a bit like flying fish. We live in an ocean, we jump out of it and behave like birds for a while, then we flop back into the ocean and re-assume our true natures as fish.

i believe, Mister Hawk, that in order to unleash your own old tape tracks of philosophic ascendancy, you have conveniently altered and maligned Mister W.L.'s position and communication.

And in any case, you must find it in yourself to forgive those who have been lured by the hypnotic rhythms of corporeal existence into a materialistic point of view, even of Mister W.L. is not firmly in their camp. They have their own sins and errors to live with, their own overwhelming pains and losses and betrayals to sort through, and it is easy to understand why they would choose to compartment the many confusions of Being and deal with only those firmly located on this side of the Great Spiritual/Material Divide. After all, the material side of that line is insured by wide-spread agreement and automatic reinforcement, which makes it a much safer playing field for those who are already handicapped by loss ands overwhelm.

All of Mom's siblings here have already acknowledged and praised your impeccable perceptivity and high state of personal enlightenment, already. We know you have been to the Bodhi tree and back. No need to beat an ascended horse, now.

I find the Buddha's comment by far the most useful of the lot. Indeed, to conquer oneself would get to the crux of solving the problem most people face in life.

Asimov's comment is amusing, again assuming one goes with the traditional comic book level views of both Heaven and Hell.

For most people, though, a real "Heaven" would be to be completely without fear and to be completely having the experience of love in all its many levels. And Hell? That would be to be completely in the state of fear and to see no way out of it. It's a matter of what is occurring in one's consciousness, not a matter of where one is located. Heaven and Hell exist within a person's own consciousness. And then there's Purgatory....a confused mixture of the two...which is what most people experience most of the time to varying degrees.

Heaven is lonely, for Sartre said, "Hell is other people." Or, more correctly, "L'enfer, c'est les autres." Perhaps you'd prefer Hobbes', "Hell is Truth seen too late."

But the Buddha teaches, "It is better to conquer yourself than to win a thousand battles. Then the victory is yours. It cannot be taken from you, not by angels or by demons, heaven or hell."

But, as Isaac Asimov said, "I don't believe in an afterlife, so I don't have to spend my whole life fearing hell, or fearing heaven even more. For whatever the tortures of hell, I think the boredom of heaven would be even worse."

Ah...the old False Dichotomy proposition:

1. A Heaven with the souls of the people who've died standing around playing gold harps.

Or...

2. No "heaven" at all (meaning no afterlife).

And no other possibilities at all. It MUST be either (1) or (2). You HAVE to believe in (1) or (2).

That is an argument worthy of a halfwit.

It's sort like thinking you MUST vote either Republican or Democratic, and that will somehow make things "right" for the country, depending on which one you pick, of course. One is supposedly "good" and the other "evil". Another False Dichotomy proposition! There are innumerable other possibilities, but the False Dichotomy ignores all of them. The mass media and the politicians LOVE these False Dichotomies, because they are thereby enabled to divide people up into 2 totally opposing groups through a really simple delusion, and thus control them. Just like the crowd at a football game. This same moronic setting up of False Dichotomies is found throughout the American culture, and constantly reinforced in popular entertainment, politics, movies, and religion. "The good guys" vs "the bad guys", and nothing in between. It's idiotic.

You're missing my point, Bee-dubya-ell. :) Are you saying you KNOW for a FACT that there is no afterlife, no continuing consciousness of any kind after the death of the body? If so..............

.......

How do you know that?

How could you know it? How could any of us presently alive be certain about that? We have no basis for such an assumption of certainty, because we are not conscious of anything beyond our present bodily circumstances...just as a bug locked inside a steel box isn't conscious of anything that lies outside that steel box. That does not mean that nothing exists outside of that steel box, does it? What if the bug is entirely mistaken in its very limited (and temporary) assumptions about "reality", based on its being locked inside the box?

In my analogy, the "steel box" is your usual way of looking at things through your 5 senses and your standard set of mental assumptions which you have become fond of.

You have alluded to a patently ridiculous cultural version of the afterlife, something akin to an old cultural fairy tale from a specific tradition, and you're reacting just to that, but there are a vast number of other possibilities of a "life after death experience" that lie way beyond that fairy tale, so why waste time reacting to it as if it or "nothing at all" are the ONLY 2 possibilities out there? To do that is akin to reducing the works of Dostoevsky and Shakespeare to a "Dick and Jane" book from a first grade English class.

They're there, but they don't play ANY stringed instruments. If you get there you are issued a trumpet, a pre-sale Conn and you magically become better than Bix or Hirt or Monk or ANYBODY (unless you already are, and then you become better than yourself). If you are sent Elsewhere, well, I hope you enjoy oboe-bagpipe-banjo sonatas played by former string players with no sense of key, timing, or rhythm.

Why would you take the word of people who've never been somewhere about what it's supposedly like there?

Well, if the place in question is fictitious, it doesn't really matter whether they've been there or not. In fact, if someone insisted they had been to a fictitious place, I would consider their description less reliable than that of someone who'd never been there.

Someone who actually believes Heaven exists and is populated by a bunch of harp strumming dead folks is probably deluded, but only half as deluded as someone who thinks he's been there and seen them.
