7th 2nd mvt. is used in several Hollywood soundtracks today. The Lousier variations are great up to a point. I do not share Segal's triumph scenario but instead hear something simple but perfectly interactive on three separate levels that become one in time.

Besides, the cellos are first to lyrically introduce the theme after the basses lay the foundation.

Do you suppose if you took your guitar with you to the next treatment they'd allow it in that room with all of the fancy chairs? And that maybe a few of those folks would enjoy the distraction of music?

My son is arriving from Seattle tomorrow - boy, is he going to be disappointed in this weather. It'll be like he never left Seattle.

Janie, welcome home to Nawth Carolina rom the wild West Virginia highlands, and to Mom's estate as well! I yam sorry you got an allergy and a pre-pubescent diamond!

Today I was going to have more chemo infusion but my WBC was low and they couldn't proceed. So a whole mess of phone cons was necessary to recast the schedule. I will have my port placement on the 3rd and bllod tests and the next chemo session between then and the 11th.

Man you should the waiting room outside the Infusion center at UNC's Cancer Hospital. It's a big waiting room full of comfortable chairs full of mostly creaky looking folks waiting for infusion related appointments. I am one of them, looking a little creaky myself, I suppose, but buoyed up by the eternal spring of youthfulness imbibed at Mom's table. Anyway, they are so many you would think that cancer had become AMerica's new favorite indoor sport.    I am grateful my own case is relatively minor, so far, and was early detected and local. Some of these folks are walking around in meat-shells that have been systemically invaded and are marching gloomily down the end zone. Or they --perhaps even worse -- don't KNOW whether they are getting worse or better, and are caught all day between the fiery flippers of hope and despair. Their faces range from mellow determination to subdued panic to grim denial and dogged persistence in spite of overwhelming odds. And there are so many of them. Inside the wing, once you are allowed in from the Lobby are scores of comfortable chairs dedicated to phlebotomy and infusion where you can sit and have your blood sucked by the very best equipment or have you system loaded up with the most ferocious anti-cancer chemicals, all the time placing your fate in the hands of people barely old enough to drive--technicians and nurse-practitioners and RNs and coordinators and phlebotomists and what have you.

Mostly, they are competent and caring and kind and draw no complaints from me. It is just an odd mass ceremony, the wearty elders being shunted through the stainless steel and plastic tubing rituals and placed in the various traditional positions and put through the dance-steps while they invoke the polysyllabic chemical deities by name. On prancer! On Dancer! On cis-platin and pembrolizumab! On Gemcitabine!

ANd laying my finger aside of my nose, with a wink and a smile, up Mom's chimply I goes! But I offer you this, ere I vanish from sight: Happy New Year to All, and to All a Good Night!

Hi Mom and Sibs. Dashing in for a Holiday visit.

Santa brought me allergic reactions to dog-knows-what for Christmas.

Oh, and a fetal diamond down in the toe of a stocking.

When symphony orchestra concerts were part of my life,
Beethoven's Seventh was regularly programmed for live performance.
But that was decades ago, I admit.
I'm partial to that dancing first movement myself.

Rapparee, take heed.
Winter Storm Frankie is headed your way.

Gnu, thinking of you and your loved ones.

If you're a fan (or not) of NPR's All Things Considered, take a moment and enjoy why Robert Siegel thinks the second movement of Beethoven's Seventh is sublime. I've always thought so, and was pleased to hear this.

Speaking of mutagenic agencies my 18 year old sister was quasi ordered by the Army to drink a container (lead) of radioactive Iodine for treatment of a slight thyroid condition. It was the cold war days and we wanted to know what ionizing isotopes do. It took over 2 decades to find out.

The Army used to march companies of men to within a mile of a small nuclear blast to see what happens. The Women's Army Corp was subject to different testing. The Army did follow up with monitoring and treatment of many of those 'volunteers' for the rest of their lives unlike other testing programs.

Yep, we are living in the age of enlightenment compared to the good old days and the half wits who were know how strong and conceptually weak, ruled the roost. Hey that's sorta like today ":^/

Mutagenic agency is what has caused my wife's five cancers, Amos. The agency was x-rays given to cure her of...poison ivy! That was back in 1950, when that sort of thing was touted for everything from acne to epilepsy. (My mom was terrible: she wouldn't let us see the bones in our feet in the x-ray machine at the shoe store.)

She came through it, and so can you. You wouldn't want to be outdone by a girl, would you?

A good argument, Donuel, and one I am pursuing with the immuno-therapy, which works on the principle of molecular inhibition, if I understand it aright.

Part of the general agreement about cancer in any form is that the source of it is not fully known. Mutagenic exposure in one key, such as with smokers or people exposed to certain chemicals. But mutation has to occur along a whole chain of genes before cancer starts up. Very faskinatin' puzzle, Olive Oyl!

Our little family of three had a wonderful day making a big meal and passing out small gifts from stockings. Warm and happy times.

On the medical front things are a little bit bumpy--some nausea and a lot of loginess and long naps. These are iatrogenic symptoms, but I feel comfortable that the rugged course of treatment is the wiser path., if the harder one. It beats having your innards chewed up by unkempt exponential mitosis, I suppose! :D More infusions on Thursday.

So a very happy New Year to Mom and all her Sibs! We have done very, very well by our Mom, and you are all Mudcat Heros.

I think I shall follow Acme's lead and make a pancake breakfast. After that, I'm afraid it's going to be just another day. We usually do something with my wife's daughter's family, but they're being highly dysfunctional so we're staying home. I'll probably spend the day using my Christmas present to myself, a rechargeable pole saw, to wreak havoc on some undesired vegetation.

Hi, Mom!

Just checking in. I'm alive and well. My wife's alive and well. My dog's alive and well. We have no cats, which is a good thing since cat's don't tend to be alive and well around here. They tend to be run over by cars, bitten by snakes, or eaten by coyotes. The fish in our pond don't eat much in the winter, so I can't tell you for sure if they're alive and well or not. Will advise come springtime.

Decisions, decisions. A couple of weeks and and tons of tasks to tackle. Will I manage to finish any, that is the question. I'm thinking tonight after a just-above-freezing rainstorm, that vegging out on the couch cuddled with the dogs and watching a NetFlix movie is just what the doctor ordered. I can begin making progress tomorrow.

We all seem to have medical issues this year, some more challenging than others, but life changing for all of us. Take care, all, and find some joy in the coming days as you share them with your loved ones.

"It was so cold that an exhibitionist walked up and described himself." Art Thieme said that.

We are all, on reflection, part of ourselves, are we not? There is no part of ourselves we are nott, surely.

Noris there any whole on which we may not reflect, thus showing the whole is but a part, on reflection.

That's my Xmas present to Mom, right there; an epigrammatic summation of profound philosophical hoohah!

I am having a quiet day after the first chemo day, with no bad side effects other than a fleeting occasional wave of nausea, quickly passed.

Let us persevere, progress, advance, exhilarate the enemy with overpowering effusions of insight, harmony, creation and affection, and forgive God for his big and wicked trick on us all.

Thanks for the kind words.

Well, that's that. There it is. Doc said the only way to try to stem the tide is for a possibly extended stay in the hospital. So, she asked him what he would do if it 'was him". He said he couldn't make the decision for her but, if it was him, "If I was fourty (he is), I would go into the hospital. If I was ninety one years old, I wouldn't even consider it until after the holiday season. Even then, probably not."

When we got home, we talked. She said, essentially, "At least, now I know. Not knowing is..." So, there it is. I don't think she will be going back to the hospital until....

BTW, AMAZING weather here today. Helped out a lot getting Mum to the doc's. December 20th and it was +2C and sunny with a gentle breeze. Might be 3" of snow down. Thank you, Dog. Thank you.

Maggie remembers you (as her namesake) and CInammon with great affection--it was our best stop on our way to our new home. What an adventure it was! Every day was exciting, with the country unrolling ahead of us, and us plunging into an unknown region, gambling on the kindness of friends and strangers we had yet to test. And the gamble paid off, in spades, as the sying goes.

Thanks for the well wishes, Gnuzer. I send them back to you an Mum redoubled.

I am very sorry about Cinnamon. That's the bitch about dogs; we love them with all our hearts, and they live lives shorter than our own. When Maggie the dog takes her final exit through God's own doggy door I will be dismayed and will crumple briefly. She adds warmth and color and humor to my life in myriad ways, she is patient and kind, as smart as a dog needs to be, and a good and constant friend. So I do not look forward to her leaving. She is only about eight now, so we are aging apace. But her burn rate is much higher than mine.

For my own part I am slightly nerved up about the beginning of chemotherapy in the heart of the Voodoo Camp, surrounded by incantations and strangely carved mystical devices made of strange materials. I will bring a good book or two and post an update to my Carebridge site, where I do my Cancer Road Journaling.

So far, so good, and remember Mom's heraldic motto: Illegitimi Non Carborundum!

MOM just headed to the kitchen to make more popcorn for you, so join us in watching old movies. She just dug out the 1961 movie Pocketful of Miracles. It isn't an xmas movie, but it feels like one, so she watches it this time of year. Totally non-PC. (I think it's from a Damon Runion short story called "Lady for a Day" or something along those lines - a recycled Cinderella story).

Christmas is coming
The goose is getting fat.
Please don't make a urinal
Of the old man's hat.

If you use it for a urinal
The old man will be mad,
And you can't apologize
By saying "Oops, my bad!"

The old man is a psychopath,
He's been one all along,
He takes a lot of umbrage
If you do him a wrong.

Yes, he takes a lot of umbrage,
Your clothes and money too,
He'll leave you in a snowdrift
With your toes up, turning blue.

I ran into a ton of trolls in Norway and Iceland this year. They were not the cutesy-wutesy ones, but uglier than ten miles of homemade mud fence and downright mean. I was fortunate in being able to defeat them and thereby saved two Norse mountain villages and Þistilfjörður in Iceland. Turned them trolls to stone, but left their bright red noses to serve as navigation beacons.

One of them, I just shoved his (definitely male) feet into his mouth until he disappeared. His last words were, "Mmmm...mmm...good! I'm delicious!" What was left was a sort of black hole, which closed with a loud burp.

Don't feed the trolls, except to themselves.

I have never heard of a herd of trolls. In fact, the largest grouping of trolls I've heard of is three. That makes a trio of trolls, which has a nice alliterative ring that Mom finds pleasing.

Do not be fooled by the that animated "Trolls" movie. (If you are not familiar with it, you obviously don't have young children in your life.) Yes, there are large groups of trolls in it, but they are not real trolls. They are as insipid as Care Bears, which is the very last thing one could say about real trolls.
