I have always known what Braintree meant. Even the first time I encountered the word. A braintree is sort of like an oak only smaller, with cauliflower clusters growing all over it which look like brains. I thought everyone knew that, but I guess I was wrong; evidently it is not a widely known literary secret. Live and learn!

Residents if Quincy, Massachusetts pronounce their town's name "Kwin-zee", while everyone else in the US pronounces it "Kwin-see". Exactly the opposite of inhabitants of Boise, Idaho, who pronounce their town's name "Boy-see" while everyone else in the US pronounces it "Boy-zee".

Now, do you see? Or zee, if you prefer?

so:
Braintree, massachusetts
is named for the Essex town
of Braintree in the U. K.

And they don't know what Braintree means ...
the name is too ancient and varied.

In the Domesday Book of 1086,
the settlement is called Branchetreu.
This is before it had a market charter from the Bishop of London.

I dunno about Quincy, Massachusetts, I have my doubts.
I'm not a New England native, so I miss a lot of stuff.
I don't know how natives pronounce Quincy
(I presume it isn't "quonset").

But what I do recall is that the town of Quincy
isn't all that old by Massachusett standards;
nearby Braintree was there first,
in fact most likely
Quincy used to be part of Braintree
(which, now I think of it, is one heckuva name,
I ought to look it up...)

Visiting every Quincy in the USA would be a notable achievement. Not necessarily a worthwhile or admirable achievement, but a notable one nonetheless. Sort of like wearing the same socks for three months.

There's also a Quincy, Florida. It's near Tallahassee, on US 90, which was the primary east/west highway before Interstate 10 was built. It's one of those towns that sorta died when the Interstate was routed just a few too many miles away. Nowadays, hardly anyone goes there unless a major traffic accident on I-10 forces them to detour through the place. It's so dull and uninteresting that there are no known clever quips or anecdotes about it, and I'm not going to invent one. It just isn't worth the effort. I'm not sure if the people there pronounce "Quincy" in some idiosyncratic fashion, but I doubt it. Imagination is not exactly their strong suit.

Instead of cleaning house and getting ready for next week's holiday meal and family gathering, I spent today at the big box hardware stores buying fencing materials. Tomorrow I'll dig around in the garden and see if there are any sweet potatoes from over the summer. If not, I need to buy a turkey and sweet potatoes; otherwise, only a turkey. Typically, the sweet potatoes in my garden are mutant giants because I wait till the end of the season to dig.

The road won't get out of bed of a morning, just lazes around letting all comers just walk all over it, never sticks up for itself, and then if the weather gets bad it whines and falls to pieces because life is so hard and cold. Buncha goddamn wusses, roads, lazier than a dead snake at midnight on Christmas, is what I think.

Wal, I dunno, Clem.

The medical lads are offering not immunotherapy, as I had thought, but a targeted chemotherapy, something which aims at kiboshing the actual cells of cancer by kicking them right in the DNA rather than strengthening immune response against them or improving immune-system detection of them. Those wily li'l bastids! Wuss than a drunk sidewinder in a thunderstorm, Clem. Check yer boots first thing, won't you?

This comes with the usual price-tag of possible abreaction to the chemo, risks of angry dandruff and ungrammatical colon, and so on. There are a few side-effect risks, low on probability, I would really like to not dick around with, such as swelling of the lungs. I imagine I'll be able to handle all that. The protocol also involves sticking yourself (usually a fingertip) for a drop of blood each morning, which raises concerns about my precious fingertips as musical envoys. That, too, can be managed. But the real question here is paths to the future. This one might do well, or not, and if I get fed up with the medical clutter I can bail in favor of "quality of life" anytime.

There are other projects, medical and alternative, out there. There are juicers, THC gummy-bears, electronic pulsing pillows, vibration managers of all sorts, vitamin mongers and dietary pony-riders, each on a different hobby horse, barkers and shysters, gurus and masseuses, acupuncturists and holy men, holy women, pot-heads and beam-operators, Reikians and Reichians, dianeticists and herbalists. Ask anyone of them if he or she can assist in reversing cancer and they often will nod sagely.

What is refreshing about my friends at UNC Oncology is there is no mysticism involved. They'll tell you what they think they know and why they think they know it and size things up probabilistically and statistically and point to what they don't know with a kind of scientific pride in their own humility, if you see what I mean. They know where their facts come from. Not to mention their budgets and equipment are so damned fancy you immediately figger they must know what the hell they're doing. ("Oi! Is that focking nun out there again?")

On the other hand ask them about "placebo effects"--a term right out of their field of work--and you draw a blank look. Same for other border-country phenomena like NDEs and OOB experiences. The problem there is that the actual genesis of the condition might well be in one of those marginalized bins of excluded information. Every field has its edges and its limits, I suppose. One would like to think there was an off-switch on one of these various sub-panels -- the mental, the biochemical, the emotional, the spiritual, or even the Divine-- that one could grope for in the dark and reset.

Kinda like finding where that damn burr is under Thunder's saddle so he would stop hitching to the right all day. One would hope. We'll find the key one way or t'other, if we look long and well. There's plenty of candidates to glare at! :D

Hell, Clem, fire's down, stars are up, time for your guard shift, and I'm turning in. G'night.

My neighbor had the same ailment recently, Amos. You're both lucky it was caught before it went further, because it can.

I'm taking apart pieces of the old fence in the back yard and doing the math as far as putting up a new part of my fence to connect to the new one next door this week. I think I can recycle all of the metal parts so I'm only out the lumber and fence pickets. Being frugal, stubborn, and retired means I have time for this. And frankly, working out in the yard without any radio or cable or any broadcast noise means I don't have to listen to as much about politics like BWL will until all of that counting is over. Politics - the biggest source of BS ever invented.

I will say this, we certainly are living in interesting times. The chaos and up he will love the news in just a little as two or three days has been in to make a buddy wonder. I am delighted with the number of lovely firebreathing women who have shown up on the political front and barged To the fore.    My fingers are still crossed for the lovely lady from Georgia. I am
fascinated by the intricacies of announcer said you being dumb by people like Rachel Maddow and cuppa Joe   Some of which is remarkable insightful and my mind refreshingly sensible. I have able to observe all lives only because I am been blessed with a four-day vacation in a nearby hospital where I have been being tortured for having her urinary infection which got as far as one of my kidneys. Anatomically improbable as it may seem this event put the wind up in the local doctors. So they ship me off for three days of drip antibiotics and saline solution and now they think they’ve got there with around it and then I am free of fevers and free of chills so looks like I will probably be going home tomorrow   Yay me
The whole thing started when I Played a benefit gig to help out the widow of a local musician who died of liver cancer unexpectedly. It was a cold night and a cheap garage and the door was open to The chill, and I had to stand around for several hours before it came our turn to perform. By then it had gotten ipretty late, and when we started into our first number couple of the local drunks took severe exception each other and started trying to eradicate each other‘s physical presence by the use of force. Fortunately, they got a hold of before they could cause any further disruption. But by the time I got home I was chilled to the bone and started having fevers and chills the next day. I guess there are some parts of North Carolina but I shouldn’t go to after dark. Thank goodness for Medicare —.

Among the things that are made from Vietnamese pho are pho news, pho leather, Naugahyde, pho furs of various species, pho Republicans, also knowns as Rinos, and pho Christians, for example.

Vietnam was a French colony for many years. Maybe the "p-h-o" spelling has something to do with how the French pronounce pho. The French never pronounce anything the way it's spelled. Heck, they don't even pronounce half the letters in most of their words.

Mom!

I had leftover pho (Vietnamese soup) for lunch. I just learned a few days ago that the correct pronunciation of "pho" is not "foe", but "fa". So, why isn't it spelled "pha" so people will pronounce it right?

I mean, it's not like the Vietnamese spell the word "p-h-o". They don't even use the same alphabet we do. Some so-called linguist decided that the proper English transcription of the Vietnamese word pronounced "fa" is "pho". Huh? Sure, there are English words in which the letter "O" is pronounced "ah" (like "got") but they don't end with "O". There's not a single English word ending in "O" in which that final vowel is pronounced "ah".   It's like someone decided to spell a word in a way that defies conventional English spelling so that waiters in Vietnamese restaurants can snicker at dumbass Americans who don't know how to pronounce "pho".
