According to TED talks, Pumpkin bread gas infused between plastic layers is an extreme insulator, better than krypton gas by far.

The chicken stew that I use for pot pies has amazing heat retention. There are a few dishes like that - once heated, you always are going to burn your mouth on them after what seems a reasonable wait. Try that!

I would classify 57,000 as a Fairly Large Number. "Very Large Number" is usually used to refer to a number so large that printing it out in non-exponential form would require a continuous strip of paper long enough to wrap around the Andromeda galaxy (approximately 1,382,304 light years).

Now, if we could raise 57,000 to the 57,000th power, that would qualify as a Very Large Number.

Better nudge this thread upward again.
My corner of Chassa-Moosetts, it has stopped snowing;
but that wind is a killer. The kind of cold dry wind
that withers on contact, it's vicious out there.

(I must look at the recent online video
of some well-meaning people digging a live moose out of a snowbank.
Not, I suspect, in Massachusetts. Maine perhaps?)

Have the rest of youse dug yourselves out of the drifting snow?

A beautiful sight this morning--a crisp clean coat of snow hiding all the fields, the trees, the houses and the oncoming traffic. Despite which we made it to Chapel Hill on time, and got the plastic Port installed in my chest. It was very dreamy. They must have slipped me a micky. In any case they will now be able to suck blood through an approved device, and also poison my body the same way. Wonders of modern science!

There are other mudcatters who have been members of that club, Amos. I'm happy to report they're still alive and kicking, some having had the port removed again after enough time had passed to be sure the cure worked.

We've entered the time of year when the buzz of the holidays is over, though the last couple of weeks was very un-buzzed, it was the bleakest string of days I've seen in a very long time. There was no getting out when it was so cold and overcast - it's a bitch when winter comes calling in North Texas. And to make things even worse - there's a pledge drive running on my PBS station. Ack! MOM just walked past with a stack of DVDs, a beer, and a bowl of popcorn.

Then there are 'free ports' in which cash, treasure, art and bonds are held tax free. The goods are not directly tax free but once they are registered elsewhere and those registrations are said to be owned by some corp in Mopupu and they are in a subsidiary in the Virgin Islands, they are virtually untraceable.

How many Freeports are there? They are not saying. But it amounts to over a thousand football fields of high security storage.

Singapore and Hong Kong have really YUGE Freeport warehouses.
Biggger than warehouse 13.

These Freeport 'safe deposit warehouses' are for billionaires not millionaires. PM for Trojan horse invasion plans. ":^/

It was in a bleak and dark December
How well it is that I remember
Who it was that we dismembered
In that bleak and dark December.

We'd been strolling the park
And it was way, way after dark --
We only did it for a lark --
For we'd been strolling in the park.

There was blood and guts and gore
On the ceiling, walls and floor
As on the battlefields of yore
Lots of blood and guts and gore.

Don't you wish that you'd been there?
Blood and guts on your face and hair,
Gore a-flying everywhere!
Don't you wish that you'd been there?

I am sure that piece was never written or published in Hillsborough, and that Rapparree is just taking liberties as is his wont. He is a rat-tail fink to the core, that he surely is.

Never mind. Tomorrow rehearsing with my fellow musician Justin in the wild backwoods down by the Haw River. Thursday chemo in the AM, and performing at the local restaurant/bar in the evening. We shall see!

Damn the torpedoes, and all that.

Myth, Fear and Froth Along the Abyss

We were all set to defer today's chemo appointment and maybe jump ship to pursue some kinder and gentler course of action, such as Protocel (an alternative product with a reputation for healing various cancers).. A good deal of confusion and anxiety was being generated by a lot of reading from various alternative modalities in which the "allopathic" medical model was characterized as brutal and unenlightened. And I get why this is. But the gross insensitivity attributed to the medicos is, I have to say, simple fear-mongering and myth-making. At least as far as our people at UNC are concerned. They were attentive, understanding, intelligent, accepting and open. They understood our concerns and were perfectly content to respect our powers of choice in the matter. They made their cases intelligently and compassionately and were not pushy or insensitive.

We decided to stick the course on the clinical trial and its concomitant chemo therapy, and were then sorry to learn the blood count was a tiny bit too low to resume the chemo program. Next week, if the creek don't rise. :D

I know there are many strongly-held opinions about the factors that cause predisposition, precipitation and prolongation of cancer. I have some myself! :D There is a whirlwind of advices to be had, and whichever course you choose to follow you can find strong voices admonishing against it. Perhaps the wisest path is to choose the best advice from different sources and formulate an integrated package that reflects wise choices from all worlds. Meditate between chemo sessions, or light up a doobie (does one still even say that today?) once a day before radiation, while invoking Krishna on alternate Wednesdays if you wish.

My own conclusions: Manage your own life and your chances of coming out unscarred will be higher. But don't buy into the frothy mythmaking sold at some of these market stalls if they require you to think ill of your fellow man. We're all on the same playground by day, and at night we all sing under the same stars.

Okay, gnu, this is a poem about my last deer hunt. I just wrote it.

One pleasant summer day it came a storm of snow;
I picked my old gun and a-hunting I did go.

I came across a herd of deer and I trailed them through the snow,
I trailed them to the mountains where straight up they did go.

I trailed them o'er the mountains, I trailed them to the brim,
And I trailed them to the waters where they jumped in to swim.

I cocked both my pistols and under water went,
To kill the fattest of them deer, that was my whole intent.

While I was under water five hundred feet or more
I fired both my pistols; like cannons did they roar.

I picked up my venison and out of water came,
To kill the balance of them deer, I thought it would be fun.

So I bent my gun in circles and fired round a hill.
And, out of three or four deer, ten thousand I did kill.

Then I picked up my venison and on my back I tied
And as the sun came passing by I hopped up there to ride.

The sun she carried me o'er the globe, so merrily I did roam
That in four and twenty hours I landed safe at home.

And the money I received for my venison and skin,
I taken it all to the barn door and it would not all go in.

And if you doubt the truth of this I tell you how to know:
Just take my trail and go my rounds, as I did, long ago.

It is called "A Deer Hunt", and was collected by the Lomaxes and published in a book long ago in 1922: Cowboy Songs, and Other Frontier Ballads
By John Avery Lomax & Alan Lomax. (MacMillan Company)

But if you want to believe Rapp wrote it, why feel free. I don't mind.

Maybe the Lomaxes lifted it from him like they tried to lift "Knots in the Devil's Tail" from Ile Gardner.

How's it going in the frigid north, Gnu? Are all systems (heat, power, water) working and I hope your mother is comfortable.

What a winter. That deer hunt poem of Rap's sounds like Robert Service-envy.

Now Sam McGee was from Tennessee,
where the cotton blooms and blows
Why he left his home in the South to roam
'round the Pole, God only knows.
He was always cold but the land of gold
seemed to hold him like a spell;
Though he'd often say in his homely way
that he'd sooner live in Hell.

Part of his friendliness was to alert me to the fact that it was dinnertime for dogs. MOM's in her room, not sure what she's doing but the radio's on pretty loud. Mom keeps singing one line over and over: "Bottle of wine, fruit of the vine, when you gonna let me get sober?" I'm not quite sure what all that means.

From whom, Amos, do you think the Lomaxes got the song? Accusing me of plagarism when those two were walking around unjailed! Humph!

In other news I am forging through strange literary corners like "Shock" by Suzanne Somers, and "Outsmart Your Cancer" ( promoting alternative therapies), and scheduling my next battle with the Super Chemical Battalion. So far, I have stood tall, bloody but unbowed. We shall see.

Amos, when Lily Festre was participating in one of our declutter threads eight or nine years ago (thank you, Katlaughing!) she was diagnosed with cancer. We talked about it for a while in that thread before she created a new thread to discuss it, and months, or perhaps a year later when she was over all of the surgeries, the chemo, and had some good follow up tests (and remarkably, during that time their request to become adoptive parents was fulfilled!) I printed the whole thing and had it bound and mailed it to her. It was a remarkable period of her learning about herself, her relationships with others, and incredible personal growth - something worthy of it's own thread.

If you want to stay out of the mainstream, then MOAB is the place, people fear this lengthy Mother, but I'm giving you fair warning that I'm not printing the entire Mother of all BS thread if this topic is discussed here exclusively. It would break the bank, and the printers would never let me darken their door again. ;-) There's also Jane's Rainbow, where they would probably like to hear what you're doing and could actually offer useful "surviving cancer" tips and observations. You'll find our fellow MOABites Rap and gnu are regular contributors in that domain.

I want to follow your progress, but if you ever want a record to look back on, you'll never find the posts here in MOAB in a logical manner even with a keyword search.

Hi, Mom!

I just installed a new bathroom sink faucet. Unbeknown to me, I purchased a model with an LED embedded in its spout. So, a blue light comes on when the water is turned on. It's like a miniature blue spotlight that shines on the bottom of the sink. I am at a total loss as to what useful function this feature serves. My wife says it's "sexy". I don't think so. To me, a sexy faucet would be one that projects an image of a dancing Hula girl onto the sink bottom. Such a faucet would also have a public health benefit as it would likely encourage most men to brush their teeth longer and more often.

Iatro Genesis

In the beginning darkness was upon the face of Amos. Then lord Iatro forbade the fastest growing cells life itself and sent them to the gates of hell spewing the remainder of their waste. Amos said let there be light and the light was good. The remaining fast cells shown brightly on the monitor and could be seen to recede separating good from bad while the music played on.

Rap do you really play banjo or does banjo play you?
