This post MIGHT inaugurate page 1150 on this thread.

In response to the Shakey Bill stuff.

When I saw the word "odious", the writer
who actually came to mind, and the period of literature,

was 20th-century Englishwoman Georgette Heyer
with her revival of Regency novels.
In which the protagonists -- including some strong-willed women --
go around saying that something is "all a hum",
or something else is "the outside of enough,"

and some woman will invariably express her indignation with:
"Odious,
odious man!"

Which usually means that she is going to fall into romance with said man.

Off Friday for Silver Spring, MD -- for the funeral of Pat's uncle. Not going to have time to visit anyone. We'll be coming back on the 27th.

Golden thrones are the narcissist alter egos from which to morning twit tweet.

Who wrote "Frankly my dear anyone can make love under ideal circumstances, now pass me the defibulator"?

I think I've read every Georgette Heyer book except the one to do with King John (or was it Richard?). She was apparently quite a talented historian.

Sorry you're headed to another funeral, Rap. You and Pat take care and despite the occasion I hope you'll enjoy meeting up with family.

Acme, of the Heyer books I have read --
I, too, plead guilty to avoiding king john --

one to which I return with increasing pleasure is
"Friday's Child." Remember that one?
The hapless young lady's given name is Hero,
but she prefers Kitten.
The ending is unreservedly happy
and there are so many laughs from beginning to end.

Mom!

A big ol' snapping turtle has showed up in my pond! He's probably gonna eat a bunch of fish, but that's okay. We have plenty of them.

Trying to eat my dog is another matter. The turtle has been warned of severe consequences should a situation arise in which emergency veterinary services are required.

Mom, it is with great regret I must report the passing of Koko, the Great Gorilla who probably died of a broken heart from being spurned for so many years by Big Mick. It's a darn shamew, really--I allus thought they looked good together walking!

Georgette Heyer (pronounced "Hair" after WWI broke out) was a pseudonym, probably for Agatha Christie, but who the author actually was is unknown. Henrietta J. Tiarks is another contender.

Heyer also wrote "The Wolf and the Dove", "A Kingdom of Dreams," and others.

Wikipedia says that Georgette Heyer is the pen name of Georgette Heyer. And she also wrote as Stella Martin. I remember reading a couple of her mysteries also. As I glance through the Heyer citations I see that a major source of information is Jane Aiken Hodge, another writer I read a lot of (this is during my teens and twenties, when the writers had been prolific for a while and I could get my hands on their books at the library or in my mother's bookshelves.)

As to the Wikipedia article on Georgette Heyer,
I note that the article does not disclose
the suicide of Heyer's widower following Heyer's death.
Which sad event speaks eloquently
on the folly
of a man depending on the financial support, largely,
of his spouse throughout the marriage.

I've never read any of the Georgette Heyer books. I presume they are romance/adventure novels?

I got a new high powered electric bike. It is only 7 lbs!
However the extension cord is over 2,200 lbs.

I do not have a new electric bicycle. I have a new Weissenborn style guitar. I don't know what it weighs, but it's way less than any other guitar I own. It also does not require an extension cord.

If you tune bike spokes and play it like an amplified hammered dulcimer you get an ethereal sound. but you cannot ride a guitar.

The palindrome music sound track to the movie Arrival 2016 mirrors the plot in which time is discovered to have palindromic qualities beyond conscious mind perception. Flash forwards are equal to flashbacks.
1 alien was harmed in this film 1 human died in this film

This is a super palindromic film.

The Incredibles was funnier but had 20 deaths

Hi, Mom!

Have you noticed that nine out of ten late model cars have the same basic headlight assembly shape? They all look, to one degree or another, like bird wings. Next time you're sober enough to drive around, see for yourself.

No, but I have noticed a great number of new white cars lately. It seems to be the latest color that the auto industry has decided to market to excess until everyone gets tired of it.

Did you go to a funeral home on your own behalf, Rapp? I have always wondered how I would feel were I to attend my own funeral. I think I would sorta float near the ceiling and relish the many expostulations of profound affection wafting up from the mourners below like so much pot smoke. Occasionally I would chortle, but very few of the gathered would take notice, being unduly focused on the departure of my ragged used-up container. What fun!

In your next globe of light incarnation, lamentations are meaningless in an egoless reality. If you still wish to navigate the love streams around your former container, I would do so by day light to avoid spooky legends from being created.

No, Amos. He was my wife's uncle and "older brother." There wasn't anyone who knew the streets of DC better than he did. Call him if you were lost, tell him what buildings were around you, and he'd know exactly where you were.

I don't intend to have a funeral, as I don't intend to go. I've been told too often where I'll probably end up, and it sounds so much like LA or NYC or other unpleasant places that I don't think I'll make the journey. When the roll is called up yonder I won't be there.

Chongo's plans are quite similar to your own, Rap, and for much the same reasons. He isn't planning to go either. Hence, his motto: "If I can't take it with me, I'm not going."

Amos, your view of how you would enjoy your own funeral also sounds a lot like the way I picture enjoying mine...same basic scenario.

The thing I find most repellent about Heaven is that everyone gets a golden harp, but there's no mention of harp lessons. The place must sound like a gigantic Guitar Center store on a Saturday afternoon. Billions of souls with limited musical ability or imagination plucking out snatches of "Stairway to Heaven" or "Smoke On the Water".

And another thing: what's with the golden harps anyway? Gold has lousy acoustic properties! And I don't even like harps! My idea of a heavenly instrument is a prewar Martin guitar.

Well, if the place in question is fictitious, it doesn't really matter whether they've been there or not. In fact, if someone insisted they had been to a fictitious place, I would consider their description less reliable than that of someone who'd never been there.

Someone who actually believes Heaven exists and is populated by a bunch of harp strumming dead folks is probably deluded, but only half as deluded as someone who thinks he's been there and seen them.

They're there, but they don't play ANY stringed instruments. If you get there you are issued a trumpet, a pre-sale Conn and you magically become better than Bix or Hirt or Monk or ANYBODY (unless you already are, and then you become better than yourself). If you are sent Elsewhere, well, I hope you enjoy oboe-bagpipe-banjo sonatas played by former string players with no sense of key, timing, or rhythm.

You're missing my point, Bee-dubya-ell. :) Are you saying you KNOW for a FACT that there is no afterlife, no continuing consciousness of any kind after the death of the body? If so..............

.......

How do you know that?

How could you know it? How could any of us presently alive be certain about that? We have no basis for such an assumption of certainty, because we are not conscious of anything beyond our present bodily circumstances...just as a bug locked inside a steel box isn't conscious of anything that lies outside that steel box. That does not mean that nothing exists outside of that steel box, does it? What if the bug is entirely mistaken in its very limited (and temporary) assumptions about "reality", based on its being locked inside the box?

In my analogy, the "steel box" is your usual way of looking at things through your 5 senses and your standard set of mental assumptions which you have become fond of.

You have alluded to a patently ridiculous cultural version of the afterlife, something akin to an old cultural fairy tale from a specific tradition, and you're reacting just to that, but there are a vast number of other possibilities of a "life after death experience" that lie way beyond that fairy tale, so why waste time reacting to it as if it or "nothing at all" are the ONLY 2 possibilities out there? To do that is akin to reducing the works of Dostoevsky and Shakespeare to a "Dick and Jane" book from a first grade English class.

Ah...the old False Dichotomy proposition:

1. A Heaven with the souls of the people who've died standing around playing gold harps.

Or...

2. No "heaven" at all (meaning no afterlife).

And no other possibilities at all. It MUST be either (1) or (2). You HAVE to believe in (1) or (2).

That is an argument worthy of a halfwit.

It's sort like thinking you MUST vote either Republican or Democratic, and that will somehow make things "right" for the country, depending on which one you pick, of course. One is supposedly "good" and the other "evil". Another False Dichotomy proposition! There are innumerable other possibilities, but the False Dichotomy ignores all of them. The mass media and the politicians LOVE these False Dichotomies, because they are thereby enabled to divide people up into 2 totally opposing groups through a really simple delusion, and thus control them. Just like the crowd at a football game. This same moronic setting up of False Dichotomies is found throughout the American culture, and constantly reinforced in popular entertainment, politics, movies, and religion. "The good guys" vs "the bad guys", and nothing in between. It's idiotic.
