Idea for a new sport:

Extreme Multi-tasking

Participants would perform two difficult and seemingly incompatible tasks like playing a Bach fugue while baking a pineapple-upside-down cake. Scores would be based on the relative difficulties of the individual tasks, the degree to which the two tasks interfere with each other, and the participants' ability to speak in coherent sentences upon completion of the tasks.

I can see the potential for entire cable television networks dedicated to it, to say nothing of the surefire Olympic medals to be won by device-addicted Millenials.

Some believe that when gluons pair up they develop a reverse momentum of PULL. Which we call gravity

However, calculating the precise internal properties of pions and other hadrons is extremely difficult and so physicists have not had a good understanding of the contributions of gluons to pion momenta.

We understand the contribution of Gluon to "pion momenta," though it's usually expressed as "pee on" and usually happens quickly (momenta) on the carpet.

And Gluon manages to contribute that 30% to the momentum of pions while not taking a break from humping Rap's leg!

Add multi-tasking to the ever-growing list of the cosmic duckdog's multifarious talents!

Aha! It is JUST as I always suspected!

Gluons account for much more pion momentum than previously thought.

Do not vote for the Wilfarts of the world. His ad does look like 90% of the ads that have mushroomed this week, especially his classic gut.

Wow - there's a bright yellow disc in the sky. Haven't seen that in what seem like weeks. It's more like living on the Olympic Penninsula (west side) than North Texas lately.

Mom!

Look at all your kids dancing around hemming and hawing and NOT making that 58,000th post!

Don't look at me. I'm not gonna do it!

Hey, MOM, I finally cleared off my computer desk enough to actually see the faux wood surface. It's interesting how dust managed to work it's way under and through all of the papers on the surface. This is part of an important dust settling experiment.

It's alright as long as one does not get attacked by river pirates, varmints, and suchlike.

I've sent $25 B&N cards to the nephews and nieces at Christmas for years. NOW they don't think I'm cheap and lazy (though I am).

I think I'm going to enjoy this trip, as we are driving to Stumptown and will visit friends both going and coming back. I know I'll enjoy the river, as long as the blizzards and hurricanes and tsunamis and earthquakes and tornadoes stay far away (say, no closer than central Nebraska).

Amos could have come but he had to make his getaway.

Years ago when visiting my aunt in Alberta, Canada, and with a very good exchange rate in place, I bought two Hudson's Bay beaver six-point blankets for the kids. Only now, as my children are in their 20s, do these take on significance. The blankets have been stored in my hall linen cupboard in their original plastic containers for more than 20 years, but finally I sent one to my 26-year-old son in the Pacific NW via my brother, who spent a week during a cross-country drive. When I told my son it's on it's way, he said "cool!" Until now, there was no reaction, or appreciation of the gift of something so mundane as a blanket. But now he has to buy furnishings and he lives in a colder climate. The worm has turned.

This is easily as exciting news as Rapparee's river cruise: I have reached that point in time when the kids understand my gifts, and furthermore, in their view I'm smarter than I was when they were teenagers. This is HUGE!

The Victim of Bray, perhaps, if your doors don't unlock?

Mom, tomorrow we leave this town to go on a cruise up and down the Columbia River. We will also take a jetboat ride up the Snake River, but not all the way through Hell's Canyon. For one thing, there are two hydroelectric dams blocking the way and well as Class 7 rapids.

I'll write when I get time.

Hi, Mom!

I learned a new word today...

Plip: Verb meaning to unlock a car door using a remote key fob. Derived from the sound most cars make when plipped.

Personal note: my van does not go "plip" when opened. It goes "chunk" (the sound of locks releasing). I suppose that means I will be plipping my wife's car open while chunking my own.

Hi, Mom!

I've spent the day playing with my new friend Hurricane Michael. We only played Blow Trees Around and Knock Down Limbs. He didn't insist we play rougher games like Uproot Trees and Blow Roofs From Houses. I was glad. I got tired of those games when I played them with his older brothers Ivan and Dennis a few years ago. When I play them, I have to play many games of Patch the Roof and Run the Chainsaw before I've recovered.

I hear Michael did play some pretty rough games with my neighbors 100 miles or so to the east. I hope they feel better soon and that they enjoy their MREs.

There is a high end restaurant nearby called Clyde's
The best dressed are seated in the taxidermy dining room, the well dressed go to the horse themed room and casual dressers just go to a room.

Seems backwards no?

True story....

The first time I took Cathy, the young lady who would eventually become my first wife, to dinner at my parents house, we were served steaks from the pronghorn my father had killed the previous fall in Wyoming. All went well until Cathy asked what kind of animal the mounted head on the wall was and Dad told her it was the very creature from which the steak she was eating came. To her credit, she did not become ill. She just turned an interesting shade of green and didn't finish her steak.

The Utah cops used pepper spray and a dog. I hope the dog wasn't sprayed, although it was probably spayed.

The entrance arches for George Washington Memorial Park in Jackson, Wyoming are made of elk antlers. However, these antlers were "sheds" from the National Elk Refuge right outside of town (go in winter and you can ride a sleigh or wagon pulled by horses among the elk). The Boy Scouts there make more than a few thousand bucks a year picking up and selling the sheds every Spring -- the things are desired for everything from dog chews to jewelry to handles. But I too don't see why (apart from a bar or something) folks would buy a mount of anything, from a squirrel to a yeti. Ours Elks Lodge has several mounts of elk -- mounts from elk that were taken over a century ago. An electrical appliance store has full body mounts of cougar, wolf, and others, all of which were taken by the founder prior to the store opening in 1902. Me, I don't have any such things, except for this flying squirrel I shot a few years back. Little sucker was wearing a helmet and goggles, if you can believe it!

Speaking of craigslist sporting goods listings, what's up with people asking real money for taxidermy items like fish mounts and deer heads? Typical local listing: eight-point whitetail buck mount - $175 USD.

I thought the idea of having a stuffed critter on the wall is that it's something you caught or shot, and you had it mounted so you can bask in the glory of your accomplishment. Who the hell wants a stuffed fish somebody else caught or a buck somebody else shot?

Now, I could see a bar or restaurant owner wanting to hang a few dead animals on the wall for atmosphere. I can also see that bar or restaurant owner wanting to pay $30 or so for the things. Not $175.

Utah highway patrol captured the guy using "less than lethal" methods. There ain't nobody saying anything more right now.

My wife's cousin Bernie only hunts with a (compound) bow. He took a brown bear up on Kodiak Island a few years ago. Naturally the bear fell dead as its foot-long front claws scraped the toes of his boots. Naturally, it was over 12 feet long and weighed slightly over a ton. Naturally. Just ask any bow hunter. Oh yes, naturally he had a guy behind him with a rifle somewhat similar to a cannon in case he just naturally pissed the bear off. However, he says that was his last bear hunt and now he just hunts pronghorns with his son over in Wyoming. He likes the meat far more than he likes bear.

Compound bows account for a over 10% of for sale listings in the sporting goods section of the local craigslist. Bowhunting seems to be something a lot of guys around here have a try at, but that few stick with.

Well, this has been interesting. My wife in on the way back from the SLC airport. They were stuck in a traffic jam on I-15 with no traffic coming the other way. Then a whole bunch of cop cars and a BearCat came roaring up the vacant southbound lanes. Seems like a guy was "slumped" by an entrance onto the interstate and a cop stopped to see what the problem was. The guy pulled a gun and walked out into the middle of the interstate. The cops stopped traffic both directions and had the SWAT team out.

The bus my wife is on is now moving again. I can't find out if she's on the interstate or traveling by country by-ways. So, she'll be home around 11 pm instead of 9.

I do not want to think of the traffic jam! The incident started at 5:30 and, well, the SLC rush hour is worse than that of DC.

Ted Nuggent had an archery hunting show along with his wife. Its a quote from the show and not a lyric. He is shown shooting deer and a tiny bear. The show didn't last long.

Ted Nugent IS an odd lyric. I just reviewed a few of his. "Great White Buffalo" from when he was with the Amboy Dukes isn't bad, "Stormtroopin'" is. I think I'll skip his concerts, albums, etc.

The wisdom of Ted (nature) Nuggent:
Remember to put an arrow in both lungs before one in the eye.

The wisdom of the song nature boy

This story is about love
The woman I loved is dead
There was a boy
A very strange enchanted boy
They say he wandered very far
Very far over land and sea
A little shy and sad of eye
But very wise, was he
And then one day
One magic day he passed my way
While we spoke of many things
Fools and kings
This he said to me
The greatest thing
You'll ever learn
Is just to love
And be loved
In return
