Tonight I cast my votes for the proxy on my retirement plan. The board wanted me to vote for the first six, and I did, but I voted for the seventh, that they wanted me to vote against, to do with holding stock in companies that commit horrendous crimes against humanity. I'm sure the board sees it as an unadministerable do-gooder shareholder initiative, but heck. War crimes? I can live without them.

1840 Fair and Free Elections

sung to Yankee Doodle

While some on rights and some on wrongs
Prefer their own reflections,
The people's right's demand our song
-- The right of free elections.

For government and order's sake
And law's important sections,
Let's all stand by the ballot box
For freedom of elections.

Refrain:
Law and order be the stake
With freedom and protection,
Let all stand by the ballot box
For fair and free elections.

Each town and county's zeal and peace
Its trade and all connections,
With science, arts must all increase
By fair and free elections

Then thwart the schemes of fighting lands
And traitor disaffections,
Stand up with willing heart and hands
For fair and free elections.

Should enemies beset us round
Of foreign fierce complexions,
Undaunted we can stand our ground
Upheld by free elections.

Elections are to make us laws
For trade, peace and protection,
Who hacks the vote forsakes the cause
Of fair and free elections.

Mom may have meant John Garfield. She has a fondness for rebellious types.

And, since this is a folk music site, it is worth pointing out that both John Garfield and James A. Garfield have been the subjects of songs. I am not aware of any songs about Garfield the cat. That does not necessarily mean there are none. I'm not personally cognizant of every song ever written, Just the good ones.

Well, I found Mom again. Apparently she once again sold her vote for a pint of rotgut whiskey -- and then several more times. She was muttering something about, "I shoulda voted for Garfield" but did say if she meant James A. or the comical cat. She's in her usual place, sleeping it off.

Congrats, Acme,
on getting both adult children
past the gainfully-employed hurdle.

Parents can have a lot of sleepless nights
over that one ...

Mom has assured me that she will, in fact, sin no more.

On the other hand, she has no plans for sinning any less.

Well, that's where I live, Amos. In a little old sod shanty log cabin in the mountainous plains of Idaho. I also appreciate this sort of song, because there is a lot of this around here even now. So's a bit of this.

Acme, if you really want to get that out without much trouble, then try explosives. Nobody in Texas cares if you do. Just snakehole some 60% (I suggest at least 10 sticks chained with PETN just to be sure). It'll work like a charm, and if you do it right you won't need the digger!

Love the Little Old Sod Shanty song. I learned it about 60 years ago. It isn?t much in demand anymore, so it?s very nice to find somebody still appreciate it

I wish the Old Settler didn't have as conspicuously a Southern accent. And the words aren't quite the way I learned them. But such is the world of folk music. . .

The friend who will replace my sewer line this month hit the water line yesterday during an exploratory dig. We discovered a robust foundation that used to support a rock walled monstrosity that sat in front of my porch. The pipe is repaired, the foundation continues to be an issue. I'd love to have it gone completely.

If I'm not around much in the next couple of weeks, it's because I'm digging up the front yard.

Great links, Rap. Nice music.

Number 1 (and only) daughter landed a new job yesterday: Her two year fellowship started in February of this year, and they told her that if things worked out well that when it ended she might find a permanent job. But a librarian job opened up and they waved it past her - she turned in her application and within hours they had an offer for her. She is now a permanent employee at a world-class small museum (with benefits.) Happy happy Mom here! Both children free of college debt and gainfully employed.

Now back to the regular nonsense.

Wolf tones are an ugly cross interference nexus of acoustic nullifying nodes. They usually occur in the most resonant of instruments.
They often reside at F#

Down in North Carolina, way down in there,
Yeah way down in North Carolina, way down there,
Flows the mighty muddy Eno River,
Yeah, it flows way down there.

That there mighty Eno River, it only floods in the spring,
In the summer, and winter, and fall.
Yeah, it only floods all the year round.
And the residents all wail and bawl.

I went down, down to North Carolina
Saw old Amos, playin' there.
He was singin', pickin' and singin',
So clean, so cool, all bare.

In Hillsborough, you gotta be a nudist
E'en when the sedge is withered and sere.
Cuz down there in North Carolina
Folks don't really have any care.

Hi, Mom! I have decided to build a dovecote. It is a bit of a bizarre decision since I don't own any doves, don't plan on buying any doves and don't even like doves. I just want something nobody else has, and nobody I know has a dovecote.

Since my dovecote is not going to actually house doves, I need not be constrained by conventional dovecote construction materials or standards. I can build it from any material I choose, and make it as large or small as I desire. I can make it from toothpick shards and two inches tall. It doesn't even have to look like a conventional dovecote. It can look like a dog turd.

And when someone asks,"Why do you have a dog turd made from broken toothpicks in your yard?" I'll tell them, "It's not a dog turd, it's a dovecote. Can't you tell?"

A baritone uke is 2 1/2 ft. long which is huge I suppose, if you are 3 feet tall.

Speaking of culture there is kim chi or the common pickle

What I have done is just turn a huge ukulele into a lute. uke2lute

Uke to Luke,
On a lute
Its the fingers
make notes linger
to add ringing
to the singing
of the songs
we sing along

As I deal with the issues of PMR and taking and tapering Prednisone, I am monitoring my calcium and sodium. I visit a local discount grocery that gets unsold items near their shelf date and sells for 25 to 50% of the regular retail price. They usually have a lot of expensive yogurt brands that comes from the Whole Foods and other high-end groceries. I've discovered several cultured mild products there, including the skyr you mention, essentially another form of kefir, a drinkable yogurt.

Or play a guitar like our Amos
In Nawth Carilina, God save us!
It filleth the air
With music so rare
That there ain't no real way to make this last line much of anything.

I have little use for a Viking.
A flautist's much more to my liking!
He tootle so snidely
That the sound travels widely
And pierces (without any miking)!

But if you have no ear for fluting
Pray next, try your hand at good luting!
It filleth the air
With a melody rare
And cannot be accused of polluting!

It had something to do with candlesticks. Grabbing gold or silver candlesticks was looting. Grabbing brass or pewter candlesticks was pillaging. Or maybe it was the other way around. I forget.

Either way, I gave up and became a wandering minstrel. You don't have to know the difference between looting and pillaging to sing about them.

♫♫♫♫♫♫♫♫

I tried to pillage, and tried to loot
But screwed it up and got the boot
So now I sing and strum my lute
And beat my drum and toot my flute

I flunked out of Viking school because I couldn't grasp the difference between looting and pillaging. The rest of the class would be looting merrily along, but the instructor would be yelling at me, "No, you stupid shitbird! That's not looting! That's pillaging! Now drop and give me twenty! And do it right next time!"

Speaking of food, whilst in Iceland we discovered skyr (pronounced "skeer" as in "He got a good skeer at the doctor's yesterday"). It's kinda like yogurt, but less sweet. Yes, you can get it in the US (Kroger affiliates, among others). There's Siggi's, smari, and Icelandic Provisions, that I know of. I like Siggi's whole milk product the best of that line, but they are all quite good.

Or, you can make your own. Here is one of several recipes you can find on the Internet.

Once you eat skyr you'll feel a sudden urge to run out and loot, plunder, and burn just like a Viking. If you can't suppress this urge I suggest you do the burning last.

I take whatever I feel like making and let the leftovers fall where they may. If I were to take pie, someone would bitch. If I took salad, someone would moan. If I took ice cream, someone would complain about it not being gluten free. If I took bacon, someone would complain that it wasn't kosher. If they don't like it they don't have to eat it. But homemade German Potato Salad, that's always appreciated!

Hi, Mom!

I have discovered the answer to the vexing question of what to take to potluck parties. Forget about trying to avoid offending the vegetarians while still coming up with something rabid carnivores can stand to eat. Don't take pasta salad that won't be eaten. Don't take fried chicken that will make some people regard you as a barbarian. Just take a pie. Everyone likes pie. If there were nothing on the table but a hundred different pies, nobody'd care. They'd all eat pie and be happy.
