The Railway clientele was intriguingly bizarre that night;- comprising hardcore folkies, cyclists, and pigeon fanciers as well as the usual underage* alcopop drinkers on the pool table. It was nice to meet so many old and new friends, and to hear so many interesting songs. Alan, thanks for bringing back memories of Harry Cox with your "Australia", even though I break out in giggles every time over the line about 'entering the bush of Australia'. Harry - loved the Prickly Bush, and its good to meet you at last. John (aka Geordie) you've found a real power in your delivery so that "Sorrows Away" & "Blackleg Miner" both were really effective. John J sang more verses of "The Cuckoo's Nest" than I'd ever heard, and the singer on my right who added a new line to "Blackbirds and Thrushes" deserves to be I'm previously engaged for 4 June, but I'll be there again for 18 June. |

This will mean occasionally there will be a gap of two weeks between sessions, but that just allows a bit of extra learning time for HelenJ! So the next one is July 9th... |

Helen had her prompt sheet, but no spectacles, and JJ was trying to prompt but didn't know which bit she was up to!! Added to which, Helen kept forgetting the tune! Anyway, Al, if you don't do shanties and chorusy things, you will have your licence revoked - and that can prove very painful in the Trussocks! It's very refreshing to hear everyone making the effort to dredge up great songs from dim and distant memory, or learning 'new' ones - and making such a good job of it! Now, what was I supposed to be doing? Work? Wassat, then?!! |

There were a lot of "doom and gloom" songs! - did anybody keep a body count? At a conservative estimate we must have sung about nine or ten deaths and murders, four rapes/seductions, plus one or two illegitimate births. What are the crime statistics like in Lymm since the singarounds started? Should I call in DI Francis Child to investigate? |

However we have had to consider over 300 different accounts of his decease, most of which point at the involvement of a certain Barbara Allen whom we would like to interview. Some accounts have advised us that she may have already died out of sorrow, but in order to test this we have applied for an exhumation, which will proceed as soon as we have removed the tangled growths of roses and briars from the graves. When I have sufficient time I would like to consider several reports from Lymm of prolonged accounts of murder, rape, incest, infanticide, and various supernatural occurrences. I am looking for several bearded sandal-wearing males with guitars, and their female accomplices, who may have some useful information. |

Ellen Mitchell sang a ballad about a man who feigned his own death in order to seduce a local maid when she came to his wake (NB this is not a recommended technique!) although it does provoke some discussion about which body parts are affected by rigor mortis! |

Seriously (?!), the lack of competitiveness is what is making 'Snog in the Guns' so enjoyable. As Harry said, it isn't intense. We've all been to those sort of gatherings...!! We aren't looking for prissy perfection, we are enjoying the beauty of traditional-style songs in the type of setting that they were mostly intended for. That's why it's so good! Although most of the songs are Acker Bilk... erm, Acapulco... errrr... unaccompanied, it isn't exclusively so. However, anyone turning up with a Marshall stack and Fender Strat will find we are a tad hostile...!! |
