Stan Rogers instrumental?

I'm scratching my head and I can't come up with anything.   Does anyone know of any instrumental recordings of Stan Rogers songs??   There are tons of covers, but I can't think of any instrumentals.   I'm looking for a project I'm doing.

The only insrumentals I know of are Stans own "Plenty Of Hornpipe" (which isn't really a hornpipe at all)

And Garnet used to on occasion end his show by coming back out with his fiddle and doing "Northwest Passage" with the audience singing the chorus, into "The Idiot"... I MIGHT have a crappy recording of that on a cassette tape somewhere...

Really, the lyrics and the voice were 85+% of Stans songs... Instrumental versions? I just don't see the point...

I've heard Scott Cameron Smith do an instrumental version of "Northwest Passage" a few years back. In 3/4 time, and right pretty it was, too. He hasn't recorded it 'though.

Symphony Nova Scotia, last Friday, at the beginning of their tribute to Stan Rogers did a 10 minute prelude. One of the members had arranged a series of Stan Rogers tunes into a very nice medley.

IS that what you were looking for, Ron? Or individual songs done instrumentally?

I have to disagree with Clinton. One important factor that made Stan an outstanding songwriter was that he wrote very strong melodies. Not everyone does. (See "Dylan, Bob.) His lyrics, melodies and his own voice blended so well together that it was difficult to separate these elements. I think this is also why it was some time after his death that a lot of artists started to cover Stan's material. He really recorded the definitive versions of most of his own songs, and you wouldn't want to put yours up beside them.

"Fogarty's Cove" would make a fine instrumental for any Celtic stringband. I've played "Northwest Passage", not as an instrumental, but with DADGAD fingerpicking accompaniment, and it always gets a good response. Lots of meat on that tune--as with many he wrote.

I used to play an instrumental version of "The Lock Keeper" not having a voice like Stan's I thought I'd just play it. His mother wrote me saying they had gotten a tape from a piano player in Yellow Knife who had done a whole cassette of Stan's songs as instrumentals. I don't think that cassette has been, or was meant for release. I agree with Clinton, that the words to Stan's songs are what immediately grabbed you. But the tunes are great.

I agree with you all about the words, but I do think the tunes are equally beautiful.

The reason I asked this question is for a radio show I am producing about Stan. I was hoping to find a few bits of instrumentals to use as a music bed for some narration between songs and interviews.

Paul Mills (Curly Boy Stubbs) and I were playing some Stan songs (as instrumentals) just three days ago. "Watchin' The Apples Grow". Fogarty's Cove and "Plenty Of Hornpipe". If you play the last one, remember their's one bar of 3/4 in it!

That would tickle Stan to no end I'd imagine... cause he wrote "The Idiot" partially to parody Morris Dancing... "Knuckle dragging neanderthal beat" was what he called it on one recording...

And Rick... The 4/4 to 3/4 to 4/4 change is in "Fogartys Cove", not "Plenty Of Hornpipe" mate...

Our Border Morris side also do a dance to thr Idiot, written by Mike from Bassett Street Hounds. There is another side who do a Cotswold dance tro the same tune and a Northwest Clogger who clogs to it. All of the above are in the Toronto area, I'm still working on ALL of us doing our own dance at the same time. Total Irony.

This is an older thread, but I just pulled out "Fogarty's Cove" (what a great recording as are all of Stan's) and listened to the first cut, "Watching the Apples Grow" and realized that this is almost note for note the version of "Cherokee Shuffle" that I learned years agone. Does this click with anyone elses take on this. If so, then this was an instrumental before Stan borrowed the tune or independently came up with nearly the same thing. What say ye all, Mudcatters?
