In reply to Joe Offer's question about Men of Worth (Donnie Macdonald and James Keigher)-- He asked, Are they any good?
And I have to say, Yes! Very good!
www.menofworth.com
The song is beautiful. I believe Jimmy Keigher sings it on the Live at Folsom album.

And now I'll renew that cookie

Subject: Lyr Add: DESTINATION DONEGAL (John McCauley)
From: Jim Dixon
Date: 11 Jul 10 - 08:27 PM

I compared the text that Brakn posted with the lyrics that Daniel O'Donnell sings in the YouTube recording, and I made a few corrections. I also "wickified" the place names, in case you want to verify the spelling.

DESTINATION DONEGAL
John McCauley
As sung by Daniel O'Donnell

1. As I stand above the starboard bow and watch the ocean foam,
As I view each new horizon I grow further from my home.
I'm sailing on a foreign ship that's bound for Montreal,
But I'll view the world and make my destination Donegal.

2. I would make my way from Malin to Bundoran through Raphoe,
Or Portsalon down to Killybegs by Creeslough and Dungloe.
I'd wander round by Barnesmore Gap. On everyone I'd call,
There beyond the Bluestack Mountains in the town of Donegal.

3. O Donegal, I miss you and I'll never understand
Why I left you for these foreign lands against my heart's command.
Whatever fortune comes my way, whatever may befall,
I know I'll make my final destination Donegal.

REPEAT 2

I know I'll make my final destination Donegal.

is there a way to contact John McAuley/McCauley? I live in Derry, might be interesting to interview John!

Writer was John McCauley. Originally from Rosemount in Derry, now living in London. He also wrote songs like "My Donegal Shore" "Among the Wicklow Hills" and "Home Town on the Foyle"

Thanks Brakn,

My father's favourite song. He is from Co. Donegal.
Much appreciated.

I have it on a tape by Margo (Daniel O'Donnell's sister) so I suppose it is "one those West-of-Ireland country-western pieces". It doesn't say who wrote it.

This looks like a pretty good song. I was expecting another one of those West-of-Ireland country-western pieces.

Where'd you get it from, Mick? Who's the songwriter?

There could be mistakes in this!!

As I stand above the starboard bow and watch the ocean foam
As I view each new horizon I grow further from my home
I'm sailing on a foreign ship, that's bound for Montreal
But I'd give the world to make my destination Donegal

I would make my way from Malin to Bundoran through Raphoe
Or Portsalon down to Killibegs by Creeslough and Dungloe
I'd wander round Barnesbeg Gap but everyone I'd call
And beyond the Blue stack maountains to the town of Donegal

Oh Donegal I miss you and I'll never understand
Why I left you for those far off lands, against my hearts command
Whatever fortune comes my way, whatever may befall
I know I'll make my final destination Donegal

I know I'll make my final destination Donegal

Men of Worth (an Irishman and a Scot, based in the Pacific Northwest) also recorded it, and it is available through their website at menofworth.com.

Apparently, the song was recorded by Daniel O'Donnell. You can buy it on CD here (click) at Wal-Mart.

Wal-Mart?

Also available at irishrecords.com, which isn't quite so embarrassing; or from irishcountrymusic.com, which is...

Also recorded by Men of Worth on their Live in Folsom CD. I missed their concert last time they were here - are they any good?

I have the song somewhere and will see if I can make out the lyrics after the weekend if nobody has already done so. Remind me.
