Subject: Lyr Add: I WISH I WAS IN GLASGOW (Billy Connolly) From: alison Date: 05 Aug 98 - 11:51 PM Hi, This is probably the one. I WISH I WAS IN GLASGOW (Billy Connolly) Oh I wish I was in Glasgow With some good old friends of mine Some good old rough companions And some good old smooth red wine We could talk about the old days And the old town's sad decline And drink to the boys on the road Oh I was born in Glasgow Near the center of the town I would take you there and show you But they've torn the building down And when I think about it It always makes me frown They bulldozed it all to make a road And that great old place I miss so much Has seen much better days And still we talk about it As we go our separate ways Oh but Glasgow gave me more Than it ever took away And prepared me for life on the road And that great old place I miss so much Has seen much better days And still we talk about it As we go our separate ways Oh but Glasgow gave me more Than it ever took away And prepared me for life on the road My granny was a cleaner My grandad drove a tram My father an engineer Made me all I am They have seen the city come and go Still they give a damn There's so much to learn along the road And Glasgow gave me more Than it ever took away And prepared me for life on the road Slainte Alison |

Subject: RE: Glasgow song \ Billy Connolly From: GUEST Date: 01 Dec 03 - 01:56 PM How could anyone seriously write lines like '...and when I think about it, it always makes me frown'!! and 'drinking smooth red wine' in a Glasgow pub?? |
Subject: RE: Glasgow song \ Billy Connolly From: Cluin Date: 01 Dec 03 - 05:47 PM Coz they bulldozed it all to make a road. |
Subject: RE: Glasgow song \ Billy Connolly From: GUEST,Ewan McVicar Date: 02 Dec 03 - 05:22 AM The tyranny of the third line rhyme sometimes results in desperate measures. Perhaps you should post a better line for preferential use. And you may prefer your red wine rough, but there are in Glasgow at least red wine concoctions that slip easily down. In fact, I remember actual bathtub red wine at a party in 1960 Partick. It was smooth enough, though it caused a regrettable tendancy to make folksingers vomit. You can't have everything, though you can try. |

Subject: Lyr Add: I WISH I WAS IN GLASGOW (Billy Connolly) From: Muttley Date: 04 Nov 05 - 01:05 AM This a rendering of the song, plus chords that was posted to me by "Fruitbowlsdad" from the UK. I'm sure 'Fruitbowl' won't object to my passing it along to you. A beautiful song and so poignant - especially if you have heard the 'record album (vinyl) version: I think it was the studio album "You Take My Photograph, I Break Your Face". He tells a 'wee story' prior to the song which might be fictional (but I don't believe so) but is SO Glaswegian in humour at the end. This arrangement of wording (verses / chorus placement etc) is as it appears on that same album. I WISH I WAS IN GLASGOW Billy Connolly G C Oh, I wish I was in Glasgow, with some good old friends of mine G Em G C Some good old rough companions, and some good old smooth red wine G C We could talk about the old days, and the old town's sad decline G D G And drink to the boys on the road G C Oh, I was born in Glasgow, near the centre of the town G Em G I would take you there and show you, but they pulled the buildings C down G C And when I think about it, it always makes me frown G D G They bulldozed it all, to make a road CHORUS D G And that great old place I miss so much, has seen much better days C G Em C And still we talk about it, as we go our separate ways G C Oh but, Glasgow gave me more, than it ever took away G D G And prepared me for life, on the road Instrumental Chorus G C My granny was a cleaner, my grandad drove a tram G Em G C My Father, an engineer, made me all I am G C They have seen the city come and go, and still they give a damn G D G There's so much to learn, along the road [last (next) two lines more slowly] G C And, Glasgow gave me more, than it ever took away G D G And prepared me for life, on the road Chorded by "Fruitbowlsdad"; UK Hope it comes through OK - if not, drop me a PM and send me your email address (don't worry, I'll "lose" it again after i post it back and I'll send you a "MS Word" copy I have saved. I'll also post this through on your PM (if I can remember how to do so!!!! John 'Muttley' Waters |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: I Wish I Was in Glasgow (Billy Connolly) From: GUEST Date: 13 Apr 12 - 05:15 PM The piano acually sounds antastic with this song. Does anyone have the music? Violin and Guitar alongside give it real smooth warm feeling. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: I Wish I Was in Glasgow (Billy Connolly) From: Senoufou Date: 11 Mar 18 - 04:03 AM The words "My father, an engineer, made me all I am" are ironic, as Billy Connelly was frequently sexually abused by his father, and cruelly beaten. He became an alcoholic and was very troubled, until his wife Pamela Stephenson helped him come to terms with it all. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: I Wish I Was in Glasgow (Billy Connolly) From: GUEST,akenaton Date: 11 Mar 18 - 08:16 AM Well I knew and had many a drink with Billy and Tam long before Pam came on the scene....He was a really nice well adjusted young guy, friendly and interested in everything....Tam was the fighter, Billy the peacemaker.......Celebrity fucked his head up slightly as it does to most performers, makes them easy meat for the "psycho babblers". |
