Sincerely,
Note Jennifer how he used the swiggly-thing at the beginning of each line void the five-lines and four-spaces copyright. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Manchester From: Noreen Date: 10 May 03 - 06:50 PM Kind of you, gargoyle, but the tune's altered from the original also. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Manchester From: GUEST,jennifer Date: 11 May 03 - 01:58 AM Yes the tune has changed too - described as "The Farmers Toast" mind you that was by the same person who is telling me I can't put music on the website... The reworked version has milk stout and caviar in, that's about all I can remember. Messages from multiple threads combined. Messages below are from a new thread, mostly - watch the message titles to telll which is which. |

I'm looking for the words to the reworked version of the Ewan MacColl song The Manchester Rambler, as performed by Patterson Jordan Dipper. Thanks very much if this is possible. Jennifer |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: (ralphie and the) Manchester (rambler) From: Ralphie Date: 12 May 03 - 01:05 PM Sorcha... Yes, Of course, The DT version is the original.... John Tams adapted it however, early in the 90's (I think that the Folk Police wouldn't approve Ho Hum !!) and when I've had me dinner, I'll spend several hours trying to type out Tams' version!! Yo Ralphie |

Subject: Lyr Add: THE MANCHESTER RAMBLER (MacColl, Tams) From: Ralphie Date: 12 May 03 - 02:15 PM Here you go then !! Love R xx VERSE 1 I've camped out on Crowden, Rambled on Snowdon Slept by the Waynestones as well. I've sunbathed on Kinder, been burnt to a cinder And many's the tale I can tell. Me rucksack has oft been my pillow Heather has oft been my bed. But, sooner than part from these mountains I love, Well I think I would rather be dead. VERSE 2 There's pleasure in dragging the peat bogs, and bragging, Of all the the fine walks that you know. There's even a measure of some kind of pleasure, In wading through ten feet of snow. Well I've seen the white hare on the heather, The curlew fly high overhead. But, sooner than part from these mountains I love, Well, I think I would rather be dead. CHORUS Nothing changes, It all stays the same, They're selling the moorland for profit and gain. They've sold all the rivers, brought all the rain, And you can't go up there there, you're disturbing the game.... Cods row, Caviar, Milk Stout and Champagne, Gold cards and Dole cards, but, never the twain, Thats the game, Thats their game.............. Nothing changes, It all stays the same. VERSE 3 So, I'll go where I will over mountain and hill, And I'll lie where the bracken lies deep. I belong to these mountains, these clear crystal fountains, Where the rocks they stand rugged and steep. Well, I've stood on the edge of the downfall, Seen all the valleys outspread. No man has the right to own these mountains I love, Anymore than the wide ocean bed.... Repeat CHORUS.... Copywright John Tams/Ewan McColl (Cop Con) |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: (ralphie and the) Manchester (rambler) From: GUEST,jennifer Date: 12 May 03 - 02:28 PM Thanks Ralphie, darling or otherwise. See you soon. Fraser Sisters on Mick Peat's Folkwaves right now - is that you on the stringed thing? Jennifer |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: (ralphie and the) Manchester (rambler) From: Liz the Squeak Date: 12 May 03 - 05:21 PM It's spelt cods' roe - fish eggs - what caviar really is. My cats love it. LTS |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: (ralphie and the) Manchester (rambler) From: Ralphie Date: 13 May 03 - 01:11 AM Liz... Thanx for the correction. I never understood what they could have been arguing about! R x |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: (ralphie and the) Manchester (rambler) From: Noreen Date: 13 May 03 - 05:17 AM And its the Wainstones (North York Moors) that he slept by, nothing to do with cowboy films at all. Praps if you ventured north of Watford occasionally, Ralphie... :0) |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: (ralphie and the) Manchester (rambler) From: Noreen Date: 13 May 03 - 07:10 AM Hi again Jennifer. While you're changing the spelling of Wainstones on your site, you'll also want to correct the spelling of Ewan MacColl's name in the copyright statement. Interesting site, thanks! |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: (ralphie and the) Manchester (rambler) From: Grab Date: 13 May 03 - 01:59 PM FYI also, Kinder Downfall is the name of a waterfall on the hill Kinder Scout in the Peak District (the location of the Mass Trespass when EMacC wrote the song). See this map reference. And indeed it's a lovely view from there on a sunny day. Don't know many walkers who like deep bracken though. It's always hot and humid, and all the local midge population lives in there... Graham. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: (ralphie and the) Manchester (rambler) From: GUEST,jennifer Date: 13 May 03 - 03:13 PM Thanks for the spell check Noreen, I'd spotted Wainstones but forgot to sort it out, didn't spot McColl. Typically, the ftp program then couldn't get a connection... Glad you liked the site though. There's other things you can do in deep bracken besides walk, Graham! And I believe MacColl was press secretary for the ramblers when the mass trespass occurred. Jennifer |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: (ralphie and the) Manchester (rambler) From: Gareth Date: 13 May 03 - 07:00 PM Hmmm ! McColl has John Axon rambling - any proof on this ???? Gareth |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: (ralphie and the) Manchester (rambler) From: Bob Bolton Date: 13 May 03 - 11:41 PM G'day Gareth, Have you listened through the full text of the Radio Ballad? The 'actuality' of John Axon's widow includes discussion of the rambles she - and later they - went on. Regards, Bob Bolton |
