Silly River Sage - Good hit, it was in "Proud Tower", and now much fumbling and searching of old carrier bags in the attic to find my copy.

BTW Barbra Tuchman is a superb historian !!!

I think the Democratic Party should issue bumper stickers about it and really start to galvanise the people of this country. It seems there may be the beginnings of a shift and they should strike while it's fresh and hot!

I imagine that the plane's pilot filed a flight plan. Anyone could track it down, even the (probable) boobs running Homeland Security. To me this is the biggest, most duplicative boondoggle since the days of reagan.

They're still talking about it: the Dem's want to know what the DPS was told to do to retrieve them, DPS says they've destroyed the records because the "investigation is completed." Yeah, sure. Seems someone was out trying to track down the former Speaker's private airplane under the ploy that it was missing. . . only to find it turned up in Ardmore, OK. That's the Homeland Security angle of it (so far), tracking the plane.

Speaking as one who has spent a little time arguing the case before the UK Boundary Commision, trying to get electorial boundaries redrawn to my party's posible advantage I can't speak with any moral purity.

But Man I just love this - and just as to try and maintain a political balence - and also to fill the gaps in my knowledge, can some knowledgeble 'Catter confirm, deny or othwise comment on the Republican Parties deliberate Boycotts of the House of Representative in the 1870's or so. The Author Barbera Touchman (SP) commented on this, something about the Chairman locking the doors to stop Republicans running away when the roll was called ?

Any references to historical facts or ULRs would be appreciated.

Emily b: you could be right, but I don't think so. I don't think Texas went through the process when they were supposed to. Having lived in both areas (Beaumont and Denton) there really isn't that much difference between the two areas except the climate. Texas will survive and it will be interesting to see how the voters "reward" the Democrats who blocked legislation while they lolly-gagged around in the Holiday Inn in Oklahoma. Only time will tell.

Judy: I wouldn't get too excited about Willie's endorsement of the Democrats behaviour. He probably nods his hat to anyone that swims upstream. He might not even KNOW why they were retreating to Oklahoma.

I think Jed and I live in different states, even if we're both in Texas. He's up in Dallas, I'm in Houston. My understanding is that we did go through redistricting 2 years ago. Another thing I understand is that Tom DeLay is bullying his Republican brothers and sisters into voting his way. There is Republican dissent regarding the redistricting but none have opted to make such a public stand against it.
The Houston Chronicle published the redistricting map and I thought it looked totally gerrymandered. The districts were squiggling all over the place. Then I realized I was looking at the current districts. The proposed map looks 10 times worse. A popular Dem from an Austin district would have his district cut out by making his district a part of Katy, Texas which is a suburb of Houston. I know Houston is big but Katy is about 140 miles away from Austin. Another new district would snake down from Austin all the way south to the Mexican border. Nobody can make me believe that makes sense. Not only would it be impossible to represent the many different types of people living in such a vastly different area, but it would be difficult for the representative to even visit his whole area.

GUEST says "They affected an action intended to 'result in a political outcome.'" Aren't we all guilty of that when we vote???

From what I can gather, the Dems have been working up in Ardmore, not playing golf so hopefully, now that the re-districting vote won't happen, they can get back to the real business of the state and will have gained some headway by being together this week.

There was a demonstration in Houston yesterday in support of the Dems. My favorite sign said, "Save our Nation without DeLay." Middle America, not just the fanatics on either side need to start paying attention to what is going on in this country and to speak with their votes.

Let's hope something can save our nation...
Emily

Molly's in the paper today. And she's one smart woman--the departure of the Democrats (who are probably somewhere between my house and Waco by now on I-35) is only a small part of her very important message. Here are a few of the remarks at the end of the May 15 column:

The latest flap over a congressional redistricting map was the proverbial last straw for the Democrats, more than 50 of whom left the state or went into hiding Sunday to break the quorum, thus bringing legislative business to a halt.

Believe me, stopping the Legislature from functioning at this point is high public service.

Craddick called it a "stunt." The R's have been pulling stunts every day of this session, and they don't write it off as payback for heavy-handed Democratic rule. Speaker Pete Laney ran a fair House, and everyone knew it.

The way things got to such a sorry pass is that the R's have been running on rote, lock-step voting.

No Democratic amendment gets considered on its merits, no matter how sensible it is. Shell bills get introduced, and then whole sections are amended on the floor, in a parody of legislative process.

The creepy thing about the far-right Republicans, who are definitely in the majority in the House, is not that they are dismantling government because they won't raise taxes -- they're dismantling government because they think it shouldn't help people. They really think that health and human services should not be provided.

It's an old line among liberals that anti-choice people care more about the unborn than they do about the born, but I'm telling you that it's not just some clever line -- these people are writing it into the state budget.

One of the darkest periods in human history occurred during the 1930s and 1940s.

Starting this Sunday and concluding on Tuesday, CBS is airing a TV mini-series entitled Hitler: The Rise of Evil. Considering that a couple of institutions are issuing study guides on this mini-series, I assume that some effort was made to keep it historically accurate. For those who need a history lesson, or for those who were alive during that period (and there are a few of us here), I recommend they watch this.

Then ask yourself:— could something like that happen here?

So
One party attempts to gerrymander to stay in power.
The other party opts out of the legislative process and causes 200-odd bills to fail.
The first party calls in the police on trumped-up charges.

This is the famed American Democracy that those of us in the rest of the world are told to respect and aspire to.

Or am I missing something?

Opinions in the San Antonio Express are somewhat different in slant than those in the northern Dallas papers. A more Democratic viewpoint is given. The headline listed on the first page of the website, "Democrats defiant...." leads to another list of stories and comment ("More Coverage") which give good coverage. Clicking on Opinion will lead to the editorial: "Don't redraw Texas' congressional districts." San Antonio and Houston, with a strong Latino population in certain areas of the counties, are two of the districts which will change.
Express

The real objective is to change House representation in Washington, to increase Republican power there, as well as to reduce the influence of the Latino element in Texas- almost 30% of the Texas population, but badly under-represented in State and Federal bodies.

(Apparently it'll take blood to wake Americans up. I got a call today from a Republican group encouraging action against this group of Dems. So this is my response...the e-mail I'm sending to Bush, Ashcroft, our Gov Perry and assorted other Republicans. These people are animals. They'll LOVE seeing this letter. And I hope they act on it...thinking they have the backing of America. Pretty underhanded on my part, I admit, but it seems most of you still don't know what the stakes are here. The president or any of his 'designees' can order you killed for any reason. You can be locked up for the rest of your life with no trial. Stripped of citizenship. In America):

Dear Mr. President;

Regarding the absent Texas lawmakers currently in the news, Section 802 of the USA PATRIOT Act clearly defines domestic terrorism as activities that:

`(A) involve acts dangerous to human life that are a violation of the criminal laws of the United States or of any State;
`(B) appear to be intended--
`(i) to intimidate or coerce a civilian population;
`(ii) to influence the policy of a government by intimidation or coercion; or

The intentional absence of the Texas Democrats could jeopardize human life due to lost funding, etc. The dereliction of duty is obviously against the law. And the absenteeism is intended 'to influence the policy of a government by intimidation or coercion.'

I strongly recommend these lawmakers be apprehended and tried and executed for terrorism under the USA PATRIOT Act. The country is counting on you.

America. Love it or leave it!

(This is coming anyway...the total destruction of all dissent and opposition. That's what the murderous new laws TELL you if you bother to read them. Let it start now.)

Bill, do you have the same dream I do, where I'm stuck in an elevator with Dubya and get a chance to deprogram him without his handlers around?

In fact, it appears that elements of the Patriot Act were used to tarck and find the mising Dems, namely Homeland Security measures. The Fort Worth Star-Telegram reports that the Air & Marine Inderdiction and Coordination Center in CA (a anti-terrorist group) was called up to track a specific plane belonging to one of the reps.

This is not happy stuff. Remember how despite the Orwellian title of "Homeland Security," some of us who were concerned at the implications were pooh-poohed that we were hysterical for ever thinking it would be used for internal political disputes. Yet, anti-terrorist federal forces are being used to require a dissenting party to acceed to the demands of the majority political party in an internal state matter.

I'm glad this Dem grandstanding is receiving so much attention, because it's turned from a joke into a lesson -- we citizens need to jerk the so-called Homeland Security Dept. up short on this issue, before someone decides the HSD has authority to get involved in ANY political dispute, up to and including elections, peaceful protests, and political speech.

Doug...all things being equal, the Democrats & Republicans do NOT, in general, approach getting elected and acquiring power the same way. Of course the Democrats would try to 'win' if they saw a way, but MOST of them would not use the sort of "deck stacking" going on now.

Sure, there are Dems that are sneaky, conniving dishonest bastards that I am ashamed see "DEM" after their names, but there would not BE two or more parties if there were not differences.

There are also Republicians that I respect, even if I do not agree with them...that is, I trust them to play fair and argue positions like reasonable men/women....but there is a fair number right now who are pushing the bounds of sanity in their approach.......Many years ago Hitler, Stalin, Mussolini and others I am sure YOU remember used every trick in the book to get power and make sure the laws and control structures were designed to keep others from having a fair chance at power.
....You see articles, reviews and opinions everyday now noting how similar some of the moves Bush and company are making are to the early jockeying done by those who ended up as despots.

No I do not expect it to go that far in America, at least not in MY lifetime, but I see stuff happening everyday that tells me that the American system IS being subtly altered to favor certain groups...much like a clever gambler using marked cards to carefully keep the game tilted in HIS favor.

One man's "brave hero" is another man's "desperate partisan." Its all tactical, and it's been going on a long, long time. It isn't all that long since the Supreme Court had to rule on those all-white Texas primaries. But I'm very much afraid the Right has more of an instinct for the jugular. But there IS no law in the state if the 'law-makers' can gerrymander to annihilate the competition. Re-districting to favor party or race or religion is immoral. Morality trumps legal technicalities. Just because someone screams 'illegal' doesn't make it so. It is now legal, under the Patriot and Homeland Security legislation, to secretly take you away and shoot you in the head without ever talking to a lawyer. In the US. If EVERYONE in the US doesn't start behaving like the Dems in the TX legislature, you WILL meet the bullet with your name on it by and by. Just say no to fascism. Stops them in their tracks.

"The Demos in Texas just can't get used to being the minority party...."

there's a BIG difference between being a minority because the voters said so..this time...and being consigned to possible permanent minority status because the Republicans are using every trick in the book to Gerrymander things so that they control the foundations of the electoral PROCESS. (The same general procedure is happening in the nation's courts right now)

It is so very obvious that much of the conservative power structure of the Republician party right now is acting on the theory that they have not just 'better ideas', but some sort of "mission" to get and retain power; and when someone believes that their goals are 'ordained', they usually are willing to use almost any means.

Most of them have finally learned not to say out loud in public what is implied by some of their chicanery, but you still get an occasional blurt in a careless moment that gets headlines.

The Democrats simply do not have a basic 'drive' for power in the same way, and this exercise in Texas, while it is an interesting attempt to stave off the inevitable, probably will not last unless they can focus the spotlight on the ISSUE differently. I do hope Molly Ivans and others can make clear the the Republicans are NOT just 'obeying the law', but attempting to co-opt the law!

Texican has multiple meanings. It could apply to the 300 approx. farmers-ranchers who were granted land under the Mexican laws, pre-Republic days. It could apply to those who first formed a government and fought against Mexico. It could apply to the Tex-Mex customs and food of the border country, and the people who claim these as their heritage. It could apply to the lingo of the border country. It could apply to the Texans of Spanish-Mexican origin. It could mean the whole Latino population in Texas.

Not sure what DougR is implying by his remark.

I'm waiting on Molly. Jed, I don't think you're speaking for "most" Texans in this. I'm hearing a lot of approval around Dallas and Fort Worth. I agree with you Mark--she's very lucid, and if more people read what she had to say and thought about it, they'd understand why the Democrats decided that an exit from the state was needed. Looks like the Star-Telegram (fondly called the Startlegram around here) runs her only on Sundays now. Here is a column for yesterday in the Sacramento Bee. There's a little lag time from when the column is written to when it appears, so I expect the next one to cover the exodus.

Fort Worth's Etta Hulme also posts some very witty political cartoons.

They said on NPR this morning that redistricting would gain the GOP FOUR more seats in the Texas legislature. Sounds a bit greedy to me.

Also, fucking DeLay is quoted now as saying the FBI, that's right the FBI! should go out there, arrest them, and take them back!! What an ass. Little Boy George and his shrubites don't like it when all don't kowtow, or maybe that should be COWtow to them.

Anyone have an addy where we can send emails of support?

If the Republicans re-district in Texas, it will kill the Democratic party for good. Simple as that. This is the last stand. I hope Bush and Ashcroft step in and force the issue.

I could be wrong. Time will tell how the voters feel about it.

Having been born in Texas and grown up here, I have to disagree with Jed's harsh view of the Leggies. What the Texas Dems are doing is a typical Texan way of handling a situation where someone (like Tom DeLay and the Bush-butt kissing Republican party) is trying to cram something down your throat.

I'm very happy that they've taken such a 'grand stand' and drawn national attention to the sneaky carbetbagging political techniques of the Republicans.   Now maybe some of those folks who haven't used their vote to kick the bastards out of office will be at the voting booth the next time around.

All the best, Áine

Ah, yes, desperate. The Republican majority is determined to remove voter representation in the Legislature from the Latino and poorer areas. All ot the aspects of rape, according to a friend down there.

They are desperate partisans, trying to win national attention in hopes of gaining some support - and get their spin on the story the best possible airplay. hmmmm...kind of like most politicians...grandstanding in a jet comes to mind

The State refused to redistrict the last time it was supposed to, so a Federal Court imposed a redistricting - supposedly a temporary measure. This current effort at redistricting has been planned to occur now to get the state back on its 10 year cycle and to complete the job imposed on it by a Federal judge.

I understand the Democrats attempt to block the redistricting task; the state is strongly Republican. By stopping the Texas legislature from operating, as they have - they stop the redistricting effort - probably for the this session.

There will be fewer of them, though in the next. Most Texans are notimpressed with their effort.

They are not brave souls fighting courageously against an unfair, mean spirited foe. They are desperate partisans, trying to win national attention in hopes of gaining some support - and get their spin on the story the best possible airplay. The redistricting effort is correct, legal and appropriate. It is supported by a vast majority of Texas citizens. The fact that a strongly Republican legislature is difficult for this minority to manipulate is no excuse for their illegal action (and it is illegal, whether or not it is criminal is another matter).

I am sure the effort will do no good in the end. The legislature will play by the rules and Texas will redistrict. and this move will only decrease the number of Democrats in the Texas legislature.

There's got to be a song here! Some possible titles for parodies:

Come All You Texas Rangers
Don't Fence Me In
Yellow Rose of Texas
Oklahoma (take your pick)
Hot Tubs of Tears
It's T for Texas
The Gambler (there's a deck of cards with the faces of the missing Democrats)

It does seem to me that the Republicans are being overly anxious to redistrict given that redictricting is only supposed to happen every 10 years, and the latest plan was devised by the State Court in 2001 after the Legislature couldn't come to a legal agreement. Apparent the Legislature does have the option to continue to redistrict every year if they can come up with the necessary votes, and the Republicans now have that necessary majority.

Ah, the beer garden! Steak tartare- a pound on your plate for 75 cents. A large dark beer for 15 cents. And songs in the Gesangverein in back. And the Nighthawk. A large plate of hamburger and beans with toasted buns! Real student food.

I wonder if the make-work jobs at the capitol are still passed out to the needy among constituents on recommendation by the senators. Under the dome in the Capitol rotunda (larger than that place in Washington)- so many people running around (in Austin, a slow walk) looking so busy- and all on the State dole.
