From: George Papavgeris
Date: 15 May 03 - 05:00 AM

Announcing the ONLY London venue for Eric Bogle's upcoming UK tour:

where: James Theatre, Shepherds Road, Watford
(part of the Watford Boys School)
on: THURSDAY 24th July.
Support by: Johnny Collins and Martyn Wyndham-Read
MC: Graeme Knights

It should be a CRACKING event. Very decently priced too: £10 for advance bookings (£8 concessions - proof required). I certainly advise people to book early, as the 250 seats are expected to go by mid-June latest.

To book your tickets for this event, send S.A.E and cheque (made out to 'Herga Folk Club') to Mrs J.Sparks, 36 King Edward Road, Barnet EN5 5AP.

See you there?

Not the same, RolyH. The Watford extravaganza will have 3 hours nett singing time and will include 5 stars for the price: Eric BOGLE, supported by Martyn WYNDHAM-READ and Johnny COLLINS, and MC-ed by Graeme KNIGHTS. Yes, I know that's only 4 names, but it looks like there might be a Mudcat surprise there also;-) Be there to find out.

Only 7 tickets left from the whole theatre. IT WILL BE A CRACKER!

What a great evening last night!

Not a spare seat in the house, the 'voices' Graham and Johnny did a great job getting everyone into singing mode. (Who else thought that Graham didn't really want to go home at the end?)

First time I've seen Eric. Wonderful songs, performed with passion and style. Tear jerkers, thought provokers and side splitters! He and John Munro worked brilliantly together.

Lovely set from Martyn Wyndham-Reed.

So pleasing to see George Papavgeris performing before the audience his songs deserve.

Well done to everyone involved in puting this on.

Thank you Watford Grammar School, Great venue - who's next?

I went last night and it was superb. ALL the performers were excellent and wasn't it reassuring to find that even someone like Martyn could forget the words!

Up to this last couple of weeks I hadn't heard of Eric Bogle, but the name kept coming up and I grabbed the last front row ticket. Am I glad I did, in spite of the hour's journey back to Hertford.

He's on again at Hitchin in September and I'm sorely tempted to go again if I can get a ticket.

Blimey jacqui.c - I thought everybody had heard of him, having written 2 or 3 of the most sung folk club songs - but then again 10yrs back I wouldn't have heard of him either (although we're both the same age). Did he sing 'The Green Fields of France' or 'And the band played Waltzing Matilda'? Done by him, they get back their original meaning I feel.

Still floating, though it could of course be the whiskey consumed back home after the concert (Martyn, Iris, Eric and John stayed at our place last night). Or the kind comments of so many people (thanks, Steve). We all agreed that it was a great evening - we all enjoyed it so much.

But more than that, as Singing Ref says, it seemed to create awareness about acoustic/folk etc music to a great number of people that would normally run a mile rather than go to a folk club. As I ran the concert Box Office for the last week, I was a natural information point for people - and today I had more than 10 calls from people asking where Herga, or St Albans, folk clubs are based, and how can they join.

I think we have something here, and to quote Eric and Martyn, as they were leaving this morning : We shouldn't let this one go.

So, watch this space....

John

I only got into the folk scene about four years ago so am a mere babe in arms as far as performers go. This week has been a real eye opener to me, with the concert last night and a session I set up at The Woodman at Chapmore End taking off like a rocket.

He did sing both songs and, although I've heard them both before sung locally and on disc, hearing them from the composer was something special. He also did a couple of dead animal ones - the cat and the chihuahua which were a real hoot.

I presume that El Greco was George, whose two songs left me wanting more. What a voice, and the songs themselves were terrific. I wish I lived closer to St Albans, but may try to get across at some point to be nosy.

Yes - I love the one about 'Little Gomez' too. I'm glad you've found the folk scene now. I was a late 'returner' as I'd listened to the 'Folk revival' during the early sixties - but then went down the Beatles, Stones et all route. Came back to it via my significant other half. She was an avid folkie back in the sixties and coming from Hull was listening to the likes of 'The Watersons', Martin Carthy, Vin Garbut (or was it the Fettlers) and Mike Chapman way back then. She joined a Morris side 12 years ago and I ended up a camp follower so to speak. Anyway - I was cajoled into singing, bought a Guitar, and here I am 10yrs latter with 2 cassettes and a CD to my name - the last containing all my own work. Funny how life turns out isn't it.

Correct jacqui.c

El Greco is indeed George.

Please come to St Albans. We start again after the summer break on Friday 3rd October, with Steve Tilston at the Comfort Hotel. You will be able to meet George there and buy his CD's if you didn't last night. If you can't wait that long you can get them at www.nightcafe.co.uk

Great evening, superb singing - was moved to tears at several points during the evening's singing. Lovely to meet old friends again - Martyn, Dan, Iris, George and Vanessa. And great to hear your news Guru!
Keep us posted on Mudcat about more concerts of similar calibre being put on at that venue. At nearly two hours of journey time it's still worth it for such a line-up.
