Opinions vary re Crawford Howard. I , like Boab, think he is hilarious. His parody of "The Green Fields of France" aka "Willie McBride" has given offence to some folkies. Not me, I bust a gut laughing the first time I heard him do it.

Boab, does this mean you CAN penetrate the accent??? I have one song from the album you mention, Town of Belfast (not quite sure of the title), and I could do with a little help. I'll post it in another thread before long.

I asked Tommy about his family's relationship with Bobby Sands last year (because I'd heard the same), and he told me he'd been a distant cousin. No idea how distant. Probably along the lines of 'we know we're related but our families were never close'.

Ive had fairly frequent contact with Tommy over the years, and have never been given the impression that he was a close relative of Bobby Sands. Colm is, indeed, his brother. Last time I heard Tommy live was when I took a short walk up over the hill from Doolin to where he was appearing in a local hall. He introduced me that night to one of the funniest guys I have ever met---Crawford Howard. Try and get hold of Crawford's "Diagonal Steam Trap"; if you can penetrate that broad "Belfawast"accent, it's hilarious! Boab

Here is Tommy Sand's website including a line to a sound file of a powerful song he's made about the September 11th events. And here is a link to the words. Which were posted by Frank Maher).

I heard the Sands family recently just outside of Newry, and bought one of the albums - superb! There Were Roses is on it - but also some humourous songs like Don't Call Me Early and The Spade (some written by other family members?) Well worth adding to any repetoire! Also, a very very nice rendition of Banks of the Bann.

I believe Finbar Furey told me that Tommy is Bobby's brother or nephew. It is indeed one of the most poigniant(sp?) songs ever.

alison, I would be happy to mail you the tune. Let me know at mlane@accn.org.

Mick

I have ben looking all over the web for music and/or lyrics to some of Tommy Sands great work. His Singing of the Times is more pertinent today then it was years ago. I have his "There were Roses" but am looking for lyrics for Sing of the Times, Humpty Dumpty was Pushed, Children of the Dole, I'm going back on the bicycle... you just have to hear these.

There were Roses may be the finest irish folk song ever. It's in the database. Any words on sources, homepages, etc. out there in www land would immensely appreciated.

(Is he any relation to Bobby Sands?)

Thanks. John Hyaduck
